One way I design characters it to run them in a few scenarios and see how they end up playing and what the personality that emerges from them is.

My own personal worst roleplaying was when I was in my third game over all. It was a 3.5 game and we were dealing with a GM who figured our large group could hold our own against a Red Dragon Wyrm. In the end the whole thing was he told us to make our backstory and feel free to add to the world for nations and so forth. Well needless to say after the 3rd or 4th session the only real roleplay I had gotten to do was a 30-45 minute interrogation of a Kobold that the rest of the group got upset at because my character was Lawful Good. Though this might just be because I couldn't get a word in except when it was my turn and I was stating my actions. And heaven forbid I asked more than 3 questions.

I honestly only use Diplomacy like that if I am drawing a blank on what to say which is rare.

Sorry for stealing your thread GM Tactics. Didn't mean to boss. Just sorta happened. I mean I wouldn't have taken the shot knowing my partner was standing right there. At least it hit him in the knee and not somewhere vital.

Yes. It is quite Pungent isn't it. Wait is that the right word for that?

MagusJanus: Sounds like something that happened in the Skull & Shackles-esque game I was playing in...

Here is one of mine that happened earlier today(not for everyone...):

Context: We are Playing Shadowrun 5E. We are a primarily Human group with a Token Elf Face and my British Elf Street Samurai. We reach the "Boss" for this particular run. It is a Troll rocking a Panther XXL Assault Cannon...

Elf Face: "My what a big gun you have..."

Troll: "All the better to blow you up with."

My Street Samurai: "Really? Cause it just looks like your over compensating for something... Did your dangly bits not grow alongside your ugly face when you Goblinized?"

Troll: "Why you!" Fires and misses me with a Critical Glitch critically wounding himself.

Myself: Picks up the Assault Cannon. "Well it might be a good thing they didn't cause you seem to be horrible at handling heavy artillery. Shall I show you how it is done, ole chap?"

there's a story in there somewhere... :-)

Quiky Dry Brick Cement meeting boots combined with a long wait for my friend to get out of her meeting. They were building a small raised flower garden and made a mess in front of a bench and I didn't notice it when I sit down on said bench... The guys working on it were at lunch...

They were objects, yes. Could you beat them to near death? No. The penalty for being found out or even suspected of that was punishment in public and your house(family) disgraced and striped of a fairly large portion of your land.

Most Codes of Conduct are for appearance but it will still translate to actions that cause better treatment of slaves and such.

Most people have it in there heads that all slaves were mistreated and were of certain race or similar. But in truth a vast majority of them were treated well.

History does have more records of mistreatment though because they are shocking and out-of-the-ordinary. It is like turning on the news and hearing of a Murderer who killed someone with a Pitchfork despite the fact that there was 3 other murders in the same neighborhood. The M.O. makes it unique and shocking meaning it makes for a better story.

Slavery is not inherently evil. Neither is Darkness or Killing.

Slavery could be a form of honor for some (like the Nords & Celts) where if a warrior is defeated and spared he serves the one who spared him as a slave.

The only time I can see Slavery as being inherently evil is in the surprisingly rare cases of abusive owners.

Jeven has the right idea on the issue.

Or simply a lot of New Players aren't used to this type of game.

I think this experiment has shown that as a whole these are fairly interesting concepts but the execution isn't right for Pathfinder.

The Warpriest feels like it would be better served as Archetypes built around adding to another already existing Archetype, The Crusader. Blessings could be introduced as an addition to the Domains and Inquisitions.

The Arcanist should probably be used to inspire a new Variant Magic System.

Some would probably work better as just an Alternate of a single class rather than a Hybrid.

The Brawler could just be a variant of the Monk. Though probably better to be called the Pugilist.

The Bloodrager could be to the Barbarian what the Ninja is to the Rogue. It uses the basic features of the Base Class but adds in its own unique options. The Bloodrage Powers could be used for a new type of Rage Power Tree (Bloodline Powers) akin to how the Totem Powers work. They could be open for the Barbarian while the Bloodrager gets them as class feature for free and sooner.

NOTE: I liked the thought of Words of Power even if they needed work.

TL;DR: Basically I think the Hybrids should use the Theme and Fluff of their parent classes but have more unique abilities while using only 1 or 2 of the currently existing Major Class Features (Rage, Favored Enemy, Bombs, Sneak Attack, Et Cetera).

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I ca understand using old abilities but they should at least add to them with something new.

A Bloodrager could use basic Rage but have its own selection of Rage Powers akin to how the Ninja & Rogue Talents interact.

Look in-between the lines for some of them.

Brawler is like a Boxer. If you ever seen boxing some of their abilities could be considered supernatural. Especially if you look at the Brawler Class as being a Boxer in a world with Magic.

The Cleric & Oracle Share a spell list so do the Sorcerer & Wizard.

Really I'm thinking we, as a community, might aught to band together and build the classes and propose them and see what Paizo thinks of them.

I mean I am still playtesting these but I see many ways that this could be handled better via single class alternates or archetypes.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

What I am proposing would be using old features and simply adding options to them.

The Hunter could be an Alternate Ranger that focuses on Favored Enemy and boosting their ability to hunt them down.

The Slayer could be an Alternate Inquisitor that is more of an Executioner/Bounty Hunter than a Judge.

The Arcanist... Well that could be dropped in favor of an alternate spellcasting method that could be used with any full caster.

The Bloodrager could be an Alternate Barbarian that provides the Arcane Psuedo-caster people have asked for.

The Brawler could be an Alternate Monk that provides a version of the Monk that provides most of what people have wanted from the Monk.

Warpriest... Well that needs a total overhaul or to be dropped...

Swashbuckler could be an Alternate Gunslinger who uses Grit to perform Deeds that focus on Melee Weapons instead of Firearms.

Skald could be an Alternate Bard that is more Martial and would go well with the Cavalier for Battle Herald. Or could be to the Battle Herald what the Magus is to the Eldritch Knight.

Shaman could be an Alternate Druid that focuses on Spirits and Summoning instead of Shapeshifting.

Investigator could be an Alternate Alchemist who focuses more of Skills.

Reread what I am saying!

I am saying leave the casting. Give them a custom spell list. Give them access to special Rage Powers based on Ancestry/Bloodlines akin to the Totem Powers. Make them more in line with a Barbarian with Self-Buff/Light Blasting Spells and access to special Rage Power Trees.

I am saying all of the CLASSES can have similar things done and be made into either alternate classes of a SINGLE Base Class or an entirely individual class as the Magus is.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

The Anti-Paladin, Samurai, and Ninja are more of Super-Archetypes. These... Well these are more like bad attempts at merging classes, though not completely horrible attempts... What of the Magus? It is a Hybrid of Fighter & Wizard.

Again the Magus is a great example of a successful hybrid. Some of these are nearly there but not quite.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Skald, Hunter, and Warpriest would be better as Archetypes.

Wait a Cleric with the Crusader Archetype is slightly better than the Warpriest... Just add in 2 Archetypes that stacks with the Crusader but not each other that add either the Weapon or Armour feature from the Warpriest!

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I like the concept of Hybrid Classes but I would rather see a Magus style hybrid than these.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Personally I think they need to re-tune them to fall more in line with the Magus.

I mean really some could be alternate classes of some other base class while others deserve there status.

Bloodrager needs at least one line to be able to negate being an alternate class while Warpriest could easily be slightly reworked into an Inquisitor or Cleric Alternate Class.

DEX is an Untyped Bonus. The Source could be the Feat or the Stat based on view.

That is what Followers are for. But even if you do lose a few they are fairly cheap. I mean sheesh 3 for 1 GP + Special Material Cost if you craft them yourself. If you really are worried about price then make your normal bulk Arrows from Stone. 80 Stone Arrows for 1 GP Heck yes. Throw Weapon Blanches on those if necessary.

Am I the only one wondering/hoping that we might see a Pathfinder Gestalt System in this?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

@Jiggy: Most people I know use one set of 10 as the 10s Place and another as the 1s Place.

So a Wand with 43 Charges would have 4 boxes filled in the 10s set and 3 in the 1s set.

And I am working on getting the basic set-up redone given it is a Word Document and not an Open Text Format and I can't open it...

Found out that the Roman type of Trebuchet I mentioned was a type of Traction Trebuchet. The Hammer of Vulcan was only as tall as 2 Normal Men and used a combinations of Pulleys and Men pulling on Ropes.

Their "Crossbows" were basically a lighter version of the Scorpio(Latin)/Polybolos(Greek) and were apparently called Manuballista(Latin)/cheiroballistra(Greek).

Maybe I misread the book a little... Oh and it was in a book series called Ancient Artillery of the World(?). I didn't have time to write down the number of the book.

And I will be using the Northern Holds Thread while I set-up a new Campaign Guide for the entire world.

I thought you would allow the CRB Classes as NPC Classes?

Rome had Trebuchets though they were typically small and very limited in use and number. (Hammer of Vulcan was the largest I ever heard of and it was around the size of the Trebuchets in Chivalry: Medieval Warfare.)

They had access to Crossbows but they were typically mounted on castle walls and used as smaller Ballistae or by the Auxiliary Troops.

Thread is too long to completely read but...

How I view it is that most Combat Mages would be Adepts in a support role with a few true Wizards/Sorcerers/etc who work with the Trebuchets, Ballistaes, etc. Monsters would be used for their special skills similar to how Elephants and such were used.

Honestly I like the way Pathfinder handles Mass Combat in UCa.

Though I might Necro the Armour thread...
