Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Ayup. But for the bleeding and all, but what can you do, eh? ;)

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Geryn wearily glares at the guards, too tired to argue. Have things truly changed this much in our absence? It's hard to believe... Geryn slumps in his saddle, hurting too much to respond. Best to stay back for now, keep ready to draw my bow if need be... Damn that goblin!

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Geryn, grunting, groans grotesquely, weaving words without a waste, "What has happened in our absence..." slipping slowly from the Sellsword. "Onward to Otik's--although I fear the worst." Weaving wearily, ridiing roughly, Geryn grieves sweet Solace' suffering.

This is what I get for writing alliterative poetry for an Ulfen a moment ago... Don't worry, it (probably) won't happen again.

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Geryn, feeling somewhat better but still fairly weak, grunts as the others talk. I'll lay claim to the goblin leader's weapons at least. Just put 'em in my pack if you don't mind--not sure I can deal with them right now." He winces slightly in pain as he speaks. "Also, would someone mind me riding double? Not sure if Huma can handle a rider right now, poor beast." He looks sadly at his horse for a moment, looking over Asliath's work for a moment. Good thing we have a few skilled healers here... have to thank Asliath when I get my strength back. I wonder if that barding could be adapted, though...

No, seriously. Is there any way that the warg barding could be tweaked to fit a full-grown horse. >.>

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Geryn groans and nods thankfully to Asliath as she finishes attending to him. "Well, at least I can say that run-of-the-mill goblins didn't do this to me. I swear, the ogres in Solamnia showed less skill." Moving carefully so as to not disturb his bandages, he moves to examine Huma. "Almost killed Huma too... bastards. 'S a good horse, and those are hard to come by. Hey, does anyone have experience treating horses?"

Damndest thing. Better fighters than most bandits too--ogres aren't that well-trained, but bandits have some experience usually. Guess I'll be using the bow for a little while, give Huma a rest too.

Heal Check:

Heal to aid another if someone else can attend to Huma.
1d20 ⇒ 1

...Ow! Thank god it's now, and not during combat.

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Seeing that he's not doing much good, Geryn just raises his arms and lets Asliath work. "Bloody goblins. Probably should have killed that one... oy, don't forget those weapons there--might be worth a bit of steel if nothing else." He coughs after saying this, then turns his head toward Asliath. "Maybe I should just let you work, then, while I sit here silently."

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Geryn nods wearily and slides off of Huma as Asliath approaches him. "Treat the horse too. Costs a bundle," he mutters as he looks dazedly at the sword in his hand. "'Least sword's ok. Got this in Solamnia..." He blinks and shakes his head slightly, trying to regain focus, and does what he can to help Asliath treat him, mainly focusing on trying to stanch the blood flowing out of him.

Crunch:

Heal Check to Aid Another: 1d20 ⇒ 9

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Enjoy, boss!
The numbers love me so much that my rolls AND rolls against me are high!

Anyways, apologies for the delay in posting--internet's been spotty. Post incoming.

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Geryn grunts as the handaxe bites into his side. As the goblin leader swings for him again, Geryn twists his sword once more, trying to slam the flat of his blade into its wrist. Doing so leaves his legs unguarded, however, as the Warg tears into Geryn's unguarded leg, leaving him bleeding from another wound.

As the goblin withdraws, so does Geryn, Huma limping beneath him. Get to safety, use the bow... he things in a haze of pain.

Ow, between last round and this one, Geryn's not doing so well--down to 1 HP. Also, you forgot to do crit confirmation on the warg bite (not that I'm going to complain about that too much), boss.
At any rate, since Geryn's on the same initiative as the gobbos, I'm assuming he does this about the same time the leader is attacking him. If that won't work, then he'll just withdraw a ways and switch to his bow.

Crunch:

Ride Check to stay in saddle, DC5: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Ride Check to guide with knees, DC5: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

Standard action: Geryn makes another disarm attempt against the goblin leader with Combat Expertise.
Attack Roll: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
Heh. I think it's safe to say that the goblin leader is unarmed right now.

Move Action: As the gobbo withdraws, Geryn does the same.
5' step from M6 to L6. If it won't give the goblin an AoO, then Geryn instead moves to J6, then I7, then H7.

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Geryn grunts in pain as the spear cuts through his armor and scratches him deeply on the side. He manages to stay in the saddle, though, and grunts as he feels Huma weakening beneath him. The horse manages to remain standing though, despite the ragged wound torn into its chest. "We need some backup here!" he yells as he desperately tries to disarm the goblin leader again, trying to maintain an active defense as he does so. Huma, whinnying in pain, lashes out against the warg once more, but cannot get an angle on it.

Crunch:

Ride Check to stay in saddle, DC: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21- Success
Ride Check to guide with knees, DC: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10- Success
Ride Check to have Huma attack, DC10: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9- Failure

Geryn:
Standard Action: Disarm attampt against the goblin leader with Combat Expertise. Armor bumped up to 19, attack bonus stays the same due to Threatening Defender.
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17

Move Action: 5-ft. step to L6.

Gah, just remembered that you can't have two traits from the same category! Is it alright if I switch out Dirty Fighter for something else?
Also, note to self: Buy barding. And probably a new horse. Here's hoping that Huma lives a bit longer.
Oh, and a general note: If you use the Preview button, you can see how rolls are going to turn out and plan accordingly.

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Post up; methinks that the gobbo leader might be missing his spear, and possibly his shield too. Also, when I mention a check to "guide with needs," I meant "guide with knees."

If I can't disarm while on a horse, then just make it a normal attack (in which case, methinks a crit is possible).

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Something that he can't articulate, born from his years of experience as a caravan guard, warns Geryn of the impending attack. With a shout of warning, he draws his sword and charges forward, hoping that at least some of his allies will charge with him. Best to bring combat to the enemy, rather than let them take the lead.

As he approaches the lead goblin, Geryn turns his horse and takes a swipe at him, hoping to disarm the creature. He then yells, "Huma, attack!" and the horse lashes out with its hooves, trying to strike the warg.

Crunch:

Although I forgot to tweak the statblock to reflect this, can I assume that Huma is battle-trained? I'll be writing things to reflect this assumption.

Ride Check to guide with needs:
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Move Action: From I8 to K8, then diagonally to M6
Standard Action: Disarm attempt on the goblin in N5/N6
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29
Geryn has Improved Disarm, so the opponent doesn't get an AoO

Ride check for Huma to attack (DC 10): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
Huma: Attacks the Warg (note: Modifiers are assuming that the hoof attack is primary, due to Huma being combat trained. This gives him a +5 to the attack over what it currently shows in his stat sheet.)
Attack Roll: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Damage Roll: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Hopefully everything here's kosher; I haven't dealt with mounted combat before, so let me know if anything needs tweaking.
Edit: Added "strike the warg" above.

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Curse you half-elven post ninja, making me edit things slightly! *shakes fist at Asliath*

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Geryn smiles as the others arrive, and moves to shake each of their hands. "Ladies, Janos." His eyes glint mischievously as he glances toward Janos, and represses a laugh as Brand apologizes to him. Probably best to not mention the horse's name until later...

"So good to see all of you. Brand and Asli aren't exaggerating Alessa--you really have grown! I was worried that some of you might have been detained or forgotten to come... but never mind. I think this talk of Seekers is just making me nervous." He blinks at Asliath's last comment, but mentally shrugs it off and smiles again, glad to see all of his friends assembled for the first time in five years. "Don't worry about following us Brand, you can probably ride double with someone. Not me, of course, but I'm sure that Janos would be more than happy to help you out, eh Janos?"

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Geryn shrugs at Brand's comment, muttering "You still ate it with vigor as I remember..." before turning his attention to Durom. "That works for me. Probably I'm just jumpy--too long on the road, I guess." With that, and a glance toward the kender (Hopefully he doesn't burn himself to death...) Geryn moves toward his horse to untie it and remount.

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Geryn nods in agreement with Durom as he eases up, moving his hand away from his sword while his eyes continue to quickly scan the forest. He moves over to the fire and eyes it for a moment before saying, "Well, with all of this word of Seekers and goblins, do we even want to move on to the Inn? I could make something here if you'd like. A bit rougher than if I was fully prepared, but still something edible." He looks around to his companions for a moment before continuing. "Although a few of us are still missing, it seems. Have any of you seen Janos, Selesh, Alessa or Asliath? Of course, he gives a slight smile, "A five-year timeline can be thrown off by a day or two easily enough."

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Geryn nods in greeting as Brand and Durom arrive, but keeps his hand near his sword hilt. "Jumpy I might be, but I could have sworn I heard a voice, and this news of goblins and thugs does nothing to put me at ease." He smiles slightly as he continues, "Blame any 'jumpiness' on me being good at my job. It's better to try and be ready than to be caught off-guard."

"As far as us stopping here, well, blame that on the kender. It's probably best that I don't have to escort Rumal again anyways." He glances to the gnome, "Although I could, if need be. At least you're a light load."

@Durom: You're welcome, you high-HP Dwarf.

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Geryn frowns as he considers Josiah's news, drumming the fingers of his free hand on his sword as he sits thoughtfully on Huma for a moment before dismounting and tying Huma to a tree as well. He is so preoccupied in his thoughts that he doesn't bother responding to Trap's comment about hard-working kender. As he moves toward the fire, he takes a bit of dried meat from his belt pouch and takes a bite, pausing before he responds.

Geryn says in a quiet voice, "Wait, who was that? I swear I heard something just before you spoke..." He carefully puts the rest of his meat in the pack, turning his attention to the woods as he slowly moves his hand to rest on his sword. In a louder voice, he responds to Josiah. "Rough times in Solace, then... especially if goblins are about. I'd be happy to help you clear them out--the road here's been fairly quiet, and I don't want to fall out of practice. How's the Inn been holding up? Hate to see them falling on hard times."

Bandits, even this close to Solace? But why would they comment about the Seekers... taunting us perhaps? Maybe the Seekers' mercenaries are toying with us, even, or some hidden group hoping to harm them somehow.

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Ayup. I'll just need to make sure to give appropriate sacrifice to the dice gods whenever we level. Maybe a nice kender or two....

Oh, and don't worry about spoilers--I'll be good. Still working through the latest one. Tell you the truth, part of the idea to base him off of Bron was from the HBO miniseries.

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Heh. Geryn was up in Solamnia too, fighting ogres as a mercenary.

Also, in retrospect, that last post of mine could have been written a bit more clearly. I blame it on a lack of coffee this morning.

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Geryn smiles as he greets Josiah. "Well, it's good to see you again at any rate, and you too Rumal, although I'm a bit surprised you were able to walk anywhere like that..." He pauses for a moment to look to the Kender. "Err, yess, of course. That is very interesting Trap. I don't think that I lost anything, but why don't you go look?"

He sighs mentally before turning back to Josiah, Joey, and Rumal. "So, what is the problem here? And how long have you been back? Not often that I see a change, but then, I haven't been gone for five years before." He laughs as he scans the woods for the aforementioned bandits. Trouble, trouble everywhere... And kender here to boot!

Damn you HP dice! Both a kender AND a sorcerer have more HP than me... *weeps and rebuilds Geryn as an 18 Con Armor-focused warrior*

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

Geryn sighs and edges his horse a bit farther away from the Kender. Ah yes... I need to make sure and double check my packs when we get to the Inn, he thinks as he looks over the vallenwoods. It had been five long years since he'd returned to Solace--five years in which he'd fought and drank and mocked Solamnics--and here he was with a Kender again. Not that it's all bad, I suppose. I've missed the quiet of Solace. Must mean I'm getting old.

With a (barely) suppressed sigh, he turns his head toward Trapdodger. "Why, I do believe that you're right. After all, those trees have grown five whole new rings since last I was here! Quickly, quickly, go gather a souvenir of this moment--perhaps a low hanging branch or a handful of twigs. After all, new seasons bring different trees, and these will be different in several years' time!" His comment brings him little joy, though, especially compared to the prospect of seeing everyone else once more. It'll be good to sup in the Last Home again... I've missed having good spiced potatoes.

Ok, I'm now slightly depressed. The Kender has more HP than I do! *cries in corner*
Also, apparently I'm traveling in with Trapdodger. Please don't steal my stuff. ;)

Male Human Free Hand Fighter 3

1. Here, and ready to mock some Solamnics... did I say that out loud?
2.Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
3. My main screen name (Kalizkan) is from an obscure character in a David Gemmell book. Liked the name, though.

Oops, forgot to roll for HP earlier. Background is updated on the profile (since I can't edit it into my earlier post). Hopefully copious use of the Dragonlance Nexus is alright--wanted to make sure that the background tied into the world as much as possible. In the process of picking out items now, should have them finished in a bit (hopefully--I hate picking out items).

Trajan, do you want me to repost my application, or just leave it in my profile?

HP Rolls:
1d10 ⇒ 41d10 ⇒ 3

Edit: Added end spoiler to "HP Rolls". Not sure if editing will change rolls, but originals were 3 and 4, unfortunately.

Edit 2:...and the Background updates didn't save, of course. Rewriting right now.

Still here and interested as well. Will expand on the backstory and purchase items tomorrow, but Geryn's more or less in shape as is.

Ok, Geryn is pretty much good to go, with the exception of adding some equipment. Stats and so forth are set up in the profile, although I can post them here on the thread if you'd like. I may still expand the background and tweak some of the fluff a bit, but he is ready for review should the deadline hit.

Please let me know if you have any questions or want anything tweaked.

Appearance:
Geryn is a roughly average-sized human, standing at 5'9" and weighing in at about 170 pounds. He has a slight build that belies his strength, and his skin is fairly light despite the time he spends on the road. Geryn has dark black hair that he wears short, and he keeps a neatly trimmed moustache with carefully contained stubble outlining what would be a neat beard if he grew it out a bit more. His eyes are a very light shade of green, and eh has a slight scar running from just under the outside corner of his left eye down to the bottom of his jaw.

Geryn dresses in utilitarian clothing, and balances his armor to allow freedom of movement and the maximum protection possible. Currently, he is wearing a long-sleeved grey shirt under his chain shirt. He has light brown doeskin pants that are tightened around his waist by a simple leather belt, and is wearing some light greaves and well-made shoes as well. His well-maintained sword sits in a simple scabbard on his right side, and he keeps a small, obvious dagger sheath on the outside of his left boot. The rest of his gear is carefully packed on and around his saddle, and carried by his horse, a calm old nag named "Huma". The mocking name has earned Geryn several duels with irritated Solamnic Knights who have heard it.

Personality:
Geryn is somewhat caustic about those he sees as incompetent, but generally keeps any commentary concerning them to himself and any friends he has nearby. He has few moral compunctions about his work, and will often weigh the pay against any risk of himself getting killed in order to decide whether to take a job. Once he has signed a contract, though, he holds to it for as long as it specifies--assuming that he doesn't discover any deceit on his employer's part, of course.

Geryn is sarcastic company in the best of times, and is usually quite generous when it comes to his friends. Always ready for a fight, he is a pragmatic swordsman whose first rule of combat is "use whatever is available to defeat the opponent."

Background:
Geryn was born in the coastal town of Crossing, the third and youngest child of Gareth and Migdala, both of whom worked as cobblers. Always adventuresome, he was easily the most active and aggressive of the three, often wrestling his older brother (Coranthus) and older sister (Odessa) to a standstill. Not well-suited for life as a cobbler, Geryn spent as much time as he could with his uncle, Cronar, a well-known roustabout and wanderer. Under Cronar’s tutelage, Geryn learned to fight, both with and without weapons. When he turned sixteen, he left home, much to his family’s relief, to begin work with his uncle as a caravan guard.

After several years working with Cronar, Geryn decided to part ways from his uncle (and his uncle’s gambling debts) and seek his own niche as a wandering mercenary. Eventually, he began working out of the Inn of the Last Home in Solace, where he met and befriended the other adventurers who would later be called the “Heroes of the Lance.” In Solace, Geryn has gained a reputation as an effective, albeit unorthodox (or “dishonorable” as the Solamnians might put it) fighter. Professionally, he is more concerned with his pay and the potential risks of a contract than with the morality, but he is a loyal employee once he has signed on for a job.

Party Role:
First and foremost, Geryn is a combatant. While not as tough as some fighters, he prefers to use his wits in a fight anyways, and is able to hold his own in a stand-up fight despite his light armor though use of his various AC bonuses and provide support by disarming and debuffing (via Dirty Trick) enemies. He can also fill in some of the roles that might be traditionally taken up by a ranger, such as tracking targets, foraging, and potentially doing some scouting. Additionally, he can react quickly in case of an ambush, can use a bow reasonably well, and is a surprisingly good cook.

Here's a rough sketch of my submission thus far. Will flesh out the background a bit more later, but any feedback on what I have thus far is welcome.

Also, how do you get the nice character sheet summaries that I keep seeing in application? Is there a way to get those to pop out automatically from something, or is it just a matter of hand-formatting everything?

Summary of character: Think Bronn, from A Song of Ice and Fire.
