"If you want to try such a strategem," Fiametta says, "who am I to say no? I'm not sure I'd want to try it myself, but if you think it might work..." The wizard shrugs.

"I do think if we want to explore any more of the sewers, we should do that before going below. We may not even be coming out this way."

To Aldus remarks, she shakes her head. "Truly, the Taldan nobility is decadent and has lost its way. But do you really think the peasantry could do any better? They would only ape their former aristocracy, but to less effect. Clearly the entire country needs more disciplined leadership that can take them back to first principals. Taldor was a proud country once, it deserves the chance to be an equally proud province."

Fiametta smiles at Nebraska in thanks. "Thank you for the offer -- I will certainly take you up on that, after my current protection wanes. Similarly you are welcome to healing from my wand, should you be so unfortunate as to take damage."

Fiametta shakes her head, then advances and casts her favorite spell, causing another acid mist to coalesce around her opponent.

"Hellfire!" Fiametta swears. "I haven't got the hang yet of these damnable air currents."

Taking a moment to study the wind in the room, she makes another attempt at sending an acid cloud at the spider.

Fiametta squints and frowns at Aldus' words. It's not that he's wrong, exactly. He's just overstating his case. We are the ones acting, but we are not separate from the gods...we are their partners. This is for our glory, but also for theirs.

She moves in behind Aldus, then sends forth another cloud of acid. "Lord Asmodeus," she says, "Please smile on our endeavor this day and strike down the spider that besets us." Then she draws her dagger and smiles.

Fiametta moves forward around the pit, and gestures at the spider. "If you decide you do need some help, Dolgarth, I do have a rope. But in the meantime I am going to dissolve this spider into a puddle of goo."

Fiametta watches as Dolgarth runs forward after the spider and cringes as he falls into the pit. I guess this is how it starts.

She makes a few arcane gestures, pulling up protective barriers around her, then climbs down into the room.

At the briefing:
Fiametta turns pale as she is upbraided by the Venture Captain. "I don't -- I mean, I guess -- I'm afraid I have no memory of that discussion. I'm so sorry. Let me check my notes." She pulls a folder out of her satchel and starts to sort through the hand-written pages. "No...no...nothing there...I'll try to pay better attention in the future, Venture-Captain." Crestfallen, she scarcely hears Nebraska and Aldus cover for her, though she is grateful for their efforts. She passes the rest of the briefing in embarassed silence.

Fiametta passes the walk to the sewer in silence, still a little winded from her illness. As her companions discusses their preparation, she offers a quick prayer to Asmodeus to keep her safe from further illness or poison.

Once there, she nods at Jakwin's words. "Yes, I can watch through the trap door and be prepared to back Dolgarth up."

She smiles as the flames surround the fighter's hands, and nods her approval. A proper Asmodean display, though it's probably better I don't tell him that. "Be careful on the way down, Dol."

Fiametta listens to Venture-Captain Hestis as she explains the mission. When she describes the Countess' fate, she turns pale, as she suddenly realizes how close she herself came to death.

"Having just recovered from that same illness," she tells the Venture-Captain, "I can say it was unusually virulent. Not even the priests you have on staff were able to cure it. I'm sorry we didn't realize she'd been stricken. You'll want to be sure," she adds, "to burn her clothes and bedding."

She ponders the rest of the information. "I don't believe I have ever encountered these 'derro'. What can you tell us about them? And what do you know about the artifact we seek, the jet rat?"

"I have a lantern and some rope," she tells the team, "but that is the extent of my spelunking gear."

It's part of the PFS rule that lets you completely rebuild your character however you like before you hit level 2.

By the way, until you hit level 2, all gear can be resold at full value, not half value. (As long as it isn't a partially used consumable.)

Fiametta listens intently to the debriefing, nodding at all the right places. "Thank you, ma'am. This mission was quite...involved. I wonder if they are all so complicated. I took a lot of notes along the way -- I'm hoping to get a chance to study them further and put together an even more comprehensive report." Fiametta coughs three times, then downs the provided wine to clear her throat.

As the evening arrives, Fiametta feels fatigued from the adventures of the day and retires early. When she wakes up in the morning she is quite ill. Annoyed, she spends the entire next day resting, trying to work on her reports, but unable to concentrate -- all the sentences blur. When she still feels ill the next morning, she asks at the Lodge for help from one of the priests they keep on staff.

Cure Disease: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

But even magical healing did not end the disease, though it did clear her head enough for her to work on her reports. She spent the day delving into the minutae of their discoveries, and outlined for the Venture Captain several ways that the Pathfinder Society could seek reimbursements from the Cassomiri government for services rendered.That is, her day job.

The rest of her companions went out on the town, but Fiametta begged off, still feeling quite ill, but she had some hope that an additional night's rest might set her right.

Feeling much better upon awakening, she quickly purchases some equipment, in preparation for the next time her services are required.

For the disease, how many saves do I need to make to cure tha? I'm thinking to save time I'll try one, and if that doesn't do it, I'll buy a Cure Disease. (Spellcasting services are in the Guide to Organized Play; that one costs 150gp.)

I like Jakwin's idea for Day Jobs.

I'm also going to get a CLW wand; the other ones I often see people getting are Mage Armor and Enlarge Person.

I'll have my purchases finalized by the end of the day -- the only thing I know I'm going to buy right now is a Combat Trained Mule to keep Norgy safe. I think I'm mostly just saving up my money right now, though.

You don't specifically register as a GM. You register as a player, and then create a new character. When you report your games, you give your credit to that character. (Basically you'll also be leveling a character up to 9 with us.)

Yeah, I went back and looked and we needed silver for that thing. I had a silver dagger, but even if I had known I was better off using acid.

Standard PFS advice:
Everyone should have a silver weapon and a cold iron weapon. A cold iron dagger is 4gp, a silver light mace is 25gp. Cheap insurance. (20 cold iron arrows are 2 gp, not sure about silver.)
Have a way to deal with swarms.
Have a ranged attack.
Have a way to deal with darkness.

I don't believe that you can retrain (other than the full retraining you can do before level 2) in CORE, since the retraining rules are from Ultimate Campaign.

Fiametta crouches down, looking for a good target. Satisfied, she sends a small red acid cloud in their direction.

I'll attack whoever isn't in melee, if possible. If there are multiple possible targets, I'll go for the human.

After concluding the paperwork and purchases in the Lodge, Fiametta hands her scroll to Jak. "I can't actually read this. Use it on whoever needs it, if it comes to that."

Then she gets ready to descend the trap door.

I've seen GMs allow that, and I've seen GMs disallow it. It's cleanest if we've recovered enough cash to buy it straight out. Either way, it would show up as a deduction on our next chronicle sheet.

If we are using the value of the goods to pay for it, that strongly implies we're buying directly from the Lodge.

What are we looking to buy, probably two or three scrolls? I'll be the buyer for one of those.

Fiametta splutters and coughs and opens her eyes. "Did you, did you take care of the vagrants with the tree trunks? Hellfire, that hurt. I think he broke a rib." She struggles, then sits up, wincing. "Or two. I guess I'm the one that needs to work on dodging."

She listens intently to the updates on their situation, and nods at all the appropriate moments.

"I'm down to cantrips, but I agree we should probably push ahead so our quarry doesn't have time to escape. Should we deliver these miscreants to the Venture Captain, or to the authorities, do you think. If the Captain, we should blindfold them, as the Lodge's location is secret. But the authorities might be very interested in a plot to tear down the Taldor establishment. Although," she muses, "it's rather a shame to stop them in such an endeavor. Still, this is a raging forest fire they're building. Far too likely to burn out of control."

Fiametta takes a five foot step backwards, and then begins to make the gestures and incantations she would use to cast her spell of sleeping -- without any actual power behind them, of course.

I'm disabled and out of spells; I might as well see if I can keep them distracted. Every attack they make against me is another chance my companions have to take them down.

After glaring at the priestess -- Nicely played, apocalypse scum -- Fiametta moves into position to take on the newcomers. With a well practiced twist of her wrist, she sends a cloud of acid at the center fighter. I think I've used this spell more today than in the past year.

Then she adds,"I don't execute prisoners, Nebraska. She's tied up and doesn't have her holy symbol, so I'm not worried about her. But if she makes herself a combatant, I will end her.

As she is talking, Fiametta moves around behind the captive, so that she is not directly in her view. She stays five feet away so as not to spook her. She also draws her dagger, but does not threaten anyone with it, merely to have it in hand should another enemy appear.

Fiametta approaches the sleeping woman. "I told you you would fall before us. Lord Asmodeus rebukes you, and your debased faith." She scrutinizes the woman and her equipment, with the aid of magical sight, and notes the magical items. Then she turns back to her companions.

"I am pleasantly surprised that spell worked. I honestly didn't expect it to. We all did a much better job of hitting, and not getting hit. That was a particularly good shot, Aldus."

Fiametta sees her companions binding the captive. "Good. I expect the Venture Captain will want to question her. Also, be sure and gag her for the trip over. I expect that she is a priestess of Groetus, the god of the end times, and his clergy tend to rant loudly and incoherently about coming catastrophe. I don't think we want the attention or the headache."

"As for the legality of confiscation. The Pathfinder Society has cleverly arranged itself to allow us to do that with plausible deniability. We bring all the gear we find to the local lodge, along with our report. In countries where the Society operates, they have reached accommodation with local law enforcement, such that this is acceptable. The Society pays us the value of those goods and then -- to the best of our knowledge -- turn everything over to the authorities when they are done with it. Sometimes the authorities give it back to the original owners, sometimes to the Society, sometimes they keep it. But we don't have to worry about that part, as long as we give everything we find to the Venture Captain."

Once the priestess is secured, Fiametta removes the note from her pocket and begins reading it, intending to reveal its contents to her compatriots. Then she will prepare. To return to the lodge.

Fiametta feels the magic gathering at the base of her spine, a low burn of ever-growing intensity, until finally she releases it in pulsing waves through all ten of her outstretched fingers -- a shimmering red field of magic, streaking towards the insane spellcaster. Given her power, Fiametta wasn't certain her spell would have any effect, but it was too late to worry about that now.

"If you will not surrender, then you shall fall before us. Groetus cannot save you from the hand of Justice." She moves forward, barely skirting the mast in her approach.

"She was trying to blind you," she tells Aldus. "A powerful spell. I doubt she can do that again. But be wary."

Then she begins to cast again.

OK. I'll draw the area in a little later, but the target area will be 5' behind Luscilla, so none of ours will be caught in the burst. It will be a DC 16 Will save to resist (unless she's over 4th level).

If she falls asleep, I will use my Standard Action to cast Acid Splash on the zombie. If she doesn't fall asleep, I will ready an action to cast Acid Splash on her if she starts to cast another spell.
Move action to move, either way. I'll move my fig and draw the sleep area in just a bit when I'm on a real computer (and make my contingent attack rolls then to one).

Fiametta has been staring slack jawed at Aldus and Nebraska as they rallied the captives. This is what comes of reading Hottstetter. We're going to have to have a talk, once we're out of danger.

But as soon as the talk turns to tactics, she snaps out of it.

"I have a single casting of a sleeping spell left. I'll try to use that before we get to close, lest I put any of you to sleep. Besides that, I can daze with a touch, so I will get close enough to use that if need be. Otherwise, I fight with acid and my dagger."

She looks around at the former captives. "Those who are better than thralls will come with us, though I would not expect any of them to fight in their condition. Only to sow confusion."

Then Fiametta hands Nebraska a cold iron dagger.

Fiametta stifles a sigh, as everything proceeds exactly as she expected. I thought the Qadiran, at least would understand. She must not have come from a good family. How does Zarta have the patience for this? I guess I'll just have to redouble my efforts to serve as a beacon of ethics and morality.

She looks Aldus up and down, making sure he was truly well. "Exactly right. I certainly won't stop anyone from freeing these obviously illegal slaves, and should I be called upon to testify against you in court, I will list the many persuasive, circumstantial details which would naturally lead one to that conclusion."

Pleased with her magnanimity, and emboldened by her growing camaraderie, she leaned forward and continued in a faux whisper, still loud enough for everyone else to hear. "In fact, I must admit that I was engaging in a bit of deception. I have been charged to strike a blow against illegal slavers -- I think that we can all agree that indiscriminate slave-takers are the lowest of the low -- and I merely wished to ascertain if there was any more persuasive evidence as to the status of these slavers than what I could see with my own eyes, before I took further action. But now I am resolved."

Fiametta unconsciously pats her satchel. "I have on my person a...small item of no importance. If I place this item in the bilge of the ship it will...prevent it's continued use in the slave trade. This would certainly fall into a legal grey area, but can be defended as the only way to stop a criminal enterprise from continuing."

She pats Aldus on the arm. "It's good to see you walking around. I was becoming concerned about you."

"Now," she says to the room at large, "Does anyone have the slightest idea what a bilge looks like?"

"Well," the lawyer temporizes in a low voice, "it really depends on whether these are legal slaves. Taldor allows slavery, to an extent, so if they were lawfully acquired, freeing them would be a crimimal act. We'd be unlikely to be spend any time in a Taldan jail, but their owners would be well within their rights to bring suit against us, and our employers. So it would be best if we could find their papers before we did anything drastic, so that we know what we're dealing with."

Fiametta takes a breath, then continued. "Now, if they are illegal slaves -- like, kidnappees, for instance -- then of course we can free them. It's just important that you understand the risk we would be taking if we can't prove their provenance."

Then she stares at the captives for a long moment, and take mental notes as to their condition."It is also...possible, that even if they are legally purchased slaves that we could temporarily take possession of them, due to their abandonment and neglect. We'd want to take them straight to the local constabulary, of course, just like we would any other lost property. Then it would be up to the authorities whether they would hold them for their owners, or release them. That would open us up to questions we might not want to answer, though."

Fiametta reviews the facts in her mind one more time, and considers whether she left anything unsaid. "That's your legal advice for the afternoon. Now while you all discuss, I'm going to take a look at these potions, and see if I can figure out what they do."

Fiametta takes a moment to examine the first potion. After a few moments, she says, "Thank the darkness. All four of them are light healing potions. Who wants to pour one of them down Aldus' throat?"
