Dragomir runs, charging, at the nearest foe, seeking to cut them in half. 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14 for 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 4) + 6 = 14… Add 2 if charge applies… If cleave applies? Just roll for me.

Dragomir looks over the area with a practiced eye, memories of time behind the plow as a young boy stirring. Oh, I don’t know friend Lewill, ya gotta get the crops in. He turns to the farmer. First time using this field? If you’ve ploughed it before have you ploughed up anything else?. He squats and looks over the field trying to get a feel for the lay of the land, where the terrain would be the most favourable for a battle and how long the land hasn’t been used.

Curiously he slips from his soldiers casual manner of speaking to something downright ‘folksy’.

I took want to stick in. I was contemplating this very issue, to railroad or not to railroad, box text vs no box text (figuratively speaking) when it comes to PBP games. I’ve seen real life tt rpgs stall out in this situation, let alone pbp games. Open world is good but sometimes stuff needs to happen. At a table top game it’s easier to lean across the table and tell the players go and make something out of what’s been given them. Exactly what you did here, so kudos, but it PBP that moment might be delayed. These days running games I tend to have a philosophy… a) the game would moves even if the players don’t, meaning the underlying issue or protagonist is moving towards resolution no matter what the players do. I may soften an edge or consequence of that but I am giving them hints both IC and OOC of that fact. The campaign that I really succeeded in that principle was The Haunting of Harrowstone. The game plot was set on a timer and the villagers and events (augmented by stealing some great ideas off these forums) were headed in one direction, players were a little confused for a session or so then caught on increasingly. b) a screen writing principle, iirc, was if the writer didn’t know what to do, was have someone throw a punch. Yes we should be adults about owning our part in the story, but definitely with PBP we need a push and an emerging drama (not necessarily a punch) if things stall. All that said, message received.

After breakfasting at the inn and returning the empty jugs, the big man mournfully notes after breakfast expenses (4 silvers), last nights drinks and accommodation he’s one whole gold coin closer to poverty. And that didn’t sit well at all. So… I’m not the prayerful sort but please tell me we’ve a spot of work on the near horizon

Now we’re talking friend barkeep. Those jugs will come back and come back whole… my word on it, he lays down the silvers and turns to the new comer, pointedly ignoring the drips in the bar who are feeling brave because some adventurers are due to hang, and smiles. New into town stranger, or it is me who is new and you’ve been here a while? In any case, come along and we can catch up. Lewitt is irl unavailable atm so can we fast forward a little and assume he follows back to accommodation?

Well… let’s see what the morrow will bring. I’m heading to the local to buy a few bottles. Happy to stand every one ONE drink, after that? Best make your own arrangements… man isn’t made of money after all. He double checks his pile of stuff visually, as if confirming it’s appearance and position before giving all a nod and heading back to buy some beer.

Not sure if it’s worth your while Priest, but reopening this more formally MIGHT be something you should think about… there’s good bones to this place, even if it looks like it’s best days have past. As for the banter of what he thinks of as professional adventurers, he seems to happy to listen in. He feels confident enough his large stature should be sufficient to garner him an invite assuming he doesn’t open his own mouth and stuff his foot into it.

I’m grateful… muchly so. I’ve slept enough rough to appreciate a cot, and recently at that too. He shifts his pack slightly, and the great sword scabbard that rode next to it. Dragomir Vuk, just rolled into town with a very small merchant caravan, if four mules could be called such. Merchant duties have been my bread and butter the last year or so since I finished my stint in the army. I’m… well, regretting the contract really as I didn’t know just how backwater this place is, and well, walking back doesn’t pay without a contract, so on that account if you’re offering local work or a caravan out of this place? I’m listening.

Hey there, says the warrior to Calhoun. Know where a new comer can grab a beer and a cot to sleep?, Dragomir asks, seeing Calhoun as a bit of a standout compared to the villagers he could see. Or for that matter, know anyone hiring a sword arm? I’m guessing not a lot happens here about s normally.

The mercenary accepted a few coins from the merchant and his meagre ‘caravan’ of 4 mules. He was beginning to think that coming here was a bad notion, though it seemed the best of a s*~+ty set of choices he had a the time. Fingers crossed, he hoped to find either another spot of work, or a caravan leaving this unimpressive town. Rumour had already reached him that some adventurers had gone nuts and killed the sheriff… which meant that free roaming armed strangers were gonna be low on the popularity list. He better find someone to attach himself to… groups were less tempting targets than individuals, no matter how large that single person might be. He’d grab a pint and ask who was hiring.

Dragomir has been repurposed a number of times… and he has again here. An ex soldier who is handy with a great sword but used his fighter bonus feat to buy improved unarmed combat because I find that to be a feat that comes in handy until level 4… when it can be swapped out. He first debuted in a PbP carrion crown campaign. It came in handy when he head butted skeletons to bits as a weapon preferrable to his sword for that purpose.
I'm FLEEING THE LAW. I've made enemies with the wrong people and came to blows with a member of the Blackrock Company. Whatever the reason, when I saw an opportunity to flee the city, and maybe make a little money, I couldn’t say no. Given that my enemies may be lurking behind any corner, I am (justifiably) paranoid and quick to react to danger. You gain a +2 bonus on Initiative checks.
Helaman here... kept playing with a monk concept but it wasn't clicking with me. I made a simple (mechanically and stat wise) fighter. His fun (for me) comes from his non conventional background. Dragomir is the child of first generation shoanti converts to Abadar. Instead of a traditional Shoanti name, he was given the very solid and traditional Varisian name of Dragomir. His family name 'Vuk' is a fragment of his fathers birth name, who has turned from the Shoanti lifestyle to embrace the benefits and blessings of civilisation. Dragomir himself was raised as a city boy who doesn't even speak Shoanti. Being a very large and imposing youth he was bought into temple employment and service as a guard and soldier of the church. Such a thing did not make him or his family popular in the least but the pay was ample and promises of advancement were made. And in the fullness of time, promises were honoured. He was assigned to a small cadre of adventurer clerics sent to Absolom, and along with them, attended Pathfinder Society training. He didn't pass tests as much as sort of push through them. When the last two of his charges were assigned to their Confirmation test, he accompanied them and acquitted himself about as well as most aspirants. Shrugging (figuratively speaking), the Society enrolled him into its ranks as well. He didn't have the temperament for the scholarship and investigation that are the normal hallmarks of the Pathfinder lifestyle, and lacking motivation or direction to continue in that path (his final remaining ward decided to head back to Varisia without telling Dragomir he was doing so), the non traditional Shoanti turned to Mercenary or Caravan Guard work that has led him around various locations within Taldor, most recently Belhaim... He is a simple, if somewhat literal, man who occasionally quotes, misquotes, or sometimes fully quotes religious teachings that are completely outside of context of how they were taught who has an abiding faith in Abadar and civilisation both. He's wise enough to understand his 'core competencies' (even if he speaks the phrase like a stunned choir boy) are those of a soldier, such as skill at arms and intimidation. Like most worshippers of Abadar, he maintains a neat and tidy appearance which is sort of obsessively taken to the next level like most of his lifestyle... a legacy of his soldiers training. He keeps his hair short, and while facial hair is not a problem for him, still shaves daily. He stands a very fit and muscular six foot four, his physique aided no doubt by the calisthenics he puts himself through most mornings. The Senior Banker always told me, "A copper saved is most assuredly NOT a copper earned... what part of 'fee's and charges' didn't you understand you dolt?!". Thus is the wisdom of The Master of the First Vault.
