Introducing the Spore War Player’s Guide

Wednesday, December 18, 2024

The nascent demon lord Treerazer has long lurked in Tanglebriar’s wretched expanse, just south of the elven nation of Kyonin. Long ago, he tried to claim the country as his own, but the elves mounted a fierce resistance and contained him. Many now believe Treerazer to be exiled, trapped, imprisoned, or simply cowardly. They claim that he has hunkered down in the swamp, afraid to attract attention or to trigger elven wrath once more.

Those who believe this are about to learn just how dangerously wrong they are.

In the Spore War Adventure Path, your characters begin as new heroes of the nation of Kyonin and are called upon by Queen Telandia Edasseril to represent Kyonin’s interests in an upcoming diplomatic summit with the nations that border Lake Encarthan. The Whispering Tyrant’s growing threat cannot be ignored, but as the meeting between diplomats gets underway, it isn’t long before everyone realizes there is a much more imminent danger to the elven way of life. Treerazer is poised to strike Kyonin’s heart, and the heroes who find themselves standing against him must be stronger than ever before!

Inside the Spore War Player’s Guide, you’ll find player-friendly, spoiler-free information and tips to help you make an exciting new 11th-level character perfect for the Spore War Adventure Path. While this campaign is exceptionally well suited to a party that consists entirely of elven characters, Kyonin is welcoming of all ancestries.

This player’s guide contains:

  • Character suggestions, including recommendations for ancestries, classes, languages, skills, and feats well suited to this Adventure Path.
  • Six new backgrounds tailor-made to enmesh your character in Kyonin’s history and legacy, to explain why your PC might be destined to become a hero of Kyonin, and to grant specific additional advantages you’ll need to face the otherworldly threats in store for you.
  • An examination of elven society to help you craft characters who, be they elven locals or visitors from abroad, can fit in and understand the lifestyles present in Kyonin.
  • A brief gazetteer of the city of Greengold, where the Spore War Adventure Path begins.
  • Spoiler-light advice for players and GMs alike who’ve played a lower level Paizo Adventure Path and are looking to transition 11th level characters from one of those stories into the Spore War Adventure Path.

Good to have some free Spore war player's guide stuff out there for PF2e+. ;)

Yay, so good to see Shalelu back! Hm, that bow looks familiar, but it wasn't one of the special magic items from Jade Regent (just checked the books). Ah, well, we'll see what it is when she appears in the AP.

So, just went looking where that bow Shalelu uses in the new art is coming from and it seems it was always her to begin with. ^^ Ah, well.

I just downloaded the Player's Guide for Spore War. It's an interesting read (especially since Kyonin and elven society in general seem to have been more or less ignored in PF1 APs since the SD disaster).

But I do have some questions about the SW PG ...

One is about the following sentence in the section about elven cuisine: "Nevertheless, even an overcooked meal won’t be wasted, as some elves have adapted to the tastes of other cultures and happily indulge in a medium rare steak or vegetables steamed to the point of becoming spreads." Is "spread" some new slang word or did some form of typo creep in there?

Also, I need a PF2/PFR to PF1 translation guide. What are "aiuvarins" and "dromaars"? Are "nephilim" the new planetouched? Is "Chthonian" the new Abyssal? Who are the native speakers of "Arboreal"?

The map ... The Shoreline Road/A4 issue has already been mentioned by other commenters ("east and south" whereas on the map it's clearly going west instead). Some sizable buildings haven't been labelled. While some of that might be due to them being privates homes and/or not AP-relevant, there is one huge complex at the southwestern corner which looks like it should have been labelled. It rivals A2 in size and anyone - like a player - looking at the map will ask what's at that location.

A lot of this is easily searchable by just highlighting the words you typed and having google do a search. Maybe you have to add the word "pathfinder".

1. half-elves
2. half-orcs

Thank you for the quick reply! :)

I recognise almost none of the creatures listed under that Arboreal link, but from the looks of the names it's some sort of plant-based language. ("Entish" or "Plant", maybe?) That's actually a really good idea.

For the map, locations not labeled play no role in the Adventure Path. We haven't detailed anything about them, so at this point they're just potential locations for future adventures in Greengold. Feel free to populate them as you wish in your Spore War game, since those sites won't play a role in the Adventure Path. At some point we might expand more upon the locations in Greengold, but there's no plans to do so I'm aware of in the immediate future.

As for the word "spread" that's not a typo nor a new slang term. It's a standard word for "a form of food that's smeared on or over a surface," like peanut butter or jam or the like. The idea being that the elves are accepting a non-elven method of reducing foods to things like jam or jelly or pate or the like.

See, my first thought was of mushy peas.

Okay, that makes more sense than the way which I parsed the sentence originally as meaning that "... some elves have adapted to the tastes of other cultures and happily indulge ... to the point of becoming spreads"! I was visualising over-weight gourmet/gourmand elves at that point. Pea purée and mashed potatoes make a lot more sense. :D

Advice for the Battlecry! classes seems to be missing, despite being referred to in the sidebar on page 5.

We shouldn't have made those references in the sidebar in hindsight, since the book in question wasn't 100% finished and I wasn't comfortable giving advice on content that, at the time, was still being edited and finalized.

I confess, the mention of Battlecry in the player's guide gave me the impression that Battlecry was releasing during the run of Spore War, but I checked and it's apparently coming in July after the adventure path after Spore War.

Huh. Battlecry wouldn't have been released concurrently with Spore War even if the latter was a six-month Adventure Path (which it isn't and shouldn't have been).

As a British person, I felt my food culture personally attacked by this section. :-)
