Out of this World: Horizons of the Vast Player's Guide

Tuesday, July 6, 2021

“Welcome to Project: Horizon! As part of this onboarding seminar, we’ll be exploring some of the challenges you should expect to face when administrating your first charter, discussing the backgrounds that made you ideal choices for this undertaking, and reviewing some of the unique skills you might bring to the table or develop during your time in the Weydana system. We look forward to both your individual and collective contributions to Project: Horizon!”

Download the Player’s Guide for the Horizons of the Vast Adventure Path.

Inside you will find answers to the questions, “What is Project: Horizon” and “Why us?” There are tips on how to prepare to be far from home where it can take several days, possibly weeks, for messages to reach your patron and for responses to arrive in turn. Find guidance on how to fill your roles as administrators, overseers, and managers of a slice of New Harmony, with all the responsibilities those roles entail. You can also find character options like The People’s Champion feat which enables you to draw confidence and dedication from the sheer number of people who depend on you. Or the new beastblood theme, described below.

You have a powerful affinity with the beasts of the wild. Perhaps you descend from—or were infected by—a lycanthrope or similar creature, were subjected to the rituals of a beastly fiend, or performed ancestral trials to pledge yourself to a beast spirit. Whatever the source, you fight and hunt like a wild thing, and you know the natural sides of most worlds like you were born upon them.

In the Starfinder Horizons of the Vast Adventure Path, as part of a massive effort to explore and develop an uninhabited planet full of valuable resources, the heroes are placed in control of a settlement and must deal with challenges from both within and without. Far from home, can the heroes establish a thriving community and survive the uncharted system’s terrible secrets and mysteries?

Interesting, this almost sounds like the Starfinder version of Kingmaker, and that can be a good thing.

I am interested to see how this AP plays out.

I am bit curious about how starfinder player's guides are now also posted separately on blog, but they are still same player's guide article as in the starfinder ap :O

I've been clicking on the link and enjoying going in a circle to download the players guide.

Nice! Love to see it.

Quick note: Looks like the "Beastblood" theme has +1 Int or Wis in the header, but only calls out a +1 to Wis in the body text.

Looking forward to this one!

I’m sorry, I don’t understand your question? Starfinder Adventure Paths generally did not have players guides until recently. So we wrote them into the back matter, so they are available to people who by the printed books and then we pull them out and turn them into PDFs so they are accessible.

Then your link to the download may be broken. The Download Here sentence leads back to this blog post.

The "Download the Player’s Guide for the Horizons of the Vast Adventure Path." hypertext link goes to the free PDF. The "Starfinder Horizons of the Vast Adventure Path" hypertext link goes to the Adventure Path landing page.

Thanks John, me too! The way I remember it, the marketing came to the creative team and said, ”Can we please have one of these, because everybody loves them.” Lol.

I mean, I'm do have almost every starfinder ap so I'm very aware of this. Part I'm confused about is "why is it still being posted in blog and included in backmatter at same time?" Like, gm doesn't really need separate player's guide if its included in a blog

It's included in the AP backmatter and they take that and turn it into a separate blog for the players, not the other way around.

Give it a few months and I imagine this blog will be pretty hard to find. Having both is useful.

I do know that ap article is first version of it, hence why I'm bit confused by it since 1e player's guide were just seperate documents. Granted it is handy to have it at both places so maybe that is reason enough

Oh yeah, they originally didn’t do PGs for Starfinder APs, was not a popular decision. Then they put them in the books. And then they started making their own separate PDFs of them, I guess to see which way might work better?

I'm fairly sure the question being asked here is this (and if it's not, it is also my question, so I'd still appreciate a response:

Given that the Player's Guide is being offered for free online, it appears that these pages are superfluous to the printed product purchased by the GM and could be better utilized by including different backmatter content that is not redundant to a free Player's Guide PDF.

I recognize that there's some value to making the document accessible both ways (for starters, doing both lets GMs avoid copyright infringement for copying or printing the Player's Guide out of the back of the book). But, now that the Player's Guide is being made available for direct download (a la a PF AP Player's Guide), has there been consideration to going all the way with SF Player's Guides? By "going all the way" I mean making a product page for the SF AP Player's Guide to make it more accessible to future users? That would allow replacing the now redundant content with something else in the actual printed AP volume/AP PDF.

I suspect the answer is, "Yes, we've considered it, but have made the decision not to take this action at this time." And, that's fine. Paizo just made a big change to the Adventure Toolbox backmatter beginning with this AP, so there's already some experimenting going on. And Paizo might not want to muck up the results of one product experiment by jumping in with a second one running at the same time. But would you mind clarifying, Aaron?

We are "going all the way" to make player's guides more accessible, but not in the way you describe. In order to reduce barriers to entry into the games, for both Pathfinder and Starfinder, we are moving away from making player's guides a free product with a product page and PZO number (downloadable only if you have a Paizo account) in favor of making them a free PDF supplement (downloadable by all.) They can be easily found on the relevant AP landing pages. See the "Free Player's Guide Download" button on the Fly Free or Die page as an example. Horizons of the Vast should get its upgraded landing page shortly.

I believe the current plan is for the player's guide material to be redundant in Starfinder (which I personally rather like) and separate in Pathfinder. The lines do have separate page counts, page counts, and creative teams. The marketing team suggested to the Starfinder creative team that a player's guide would be beneficial and they came up with a different solution than the Pathfinder team. Does that answer your questions?

Meant to say, "The lines do have separate page counts, prices, and creative teams."

Good to have some Free Horizons of the Vast Player's Guide Stuff for some good newfangled oldfashioned space-admin kingly-makin' stuff for Starfinder. ;)

Aaron, do you have any idea which artist created the lovely Horizons of the Vast banner? I don't see an artist credit on any of the blogs so far.

Hmm

Aaron, I found the answer for this. The artist was Kent Hamilton.
