Advanced Race Guide: Art Preview

Thursday, April 12, 2012

We wrested our Advanced Race Guide preview back out of the hands of Tuesday's pernicious pirates. Inside this upcoming tome of cutting-edge characters and radical races you'll find all the information you need on creating members of all three of the races previewed here, along with any other exotic beings you’ve ever wanted to play or can possibly imagine. Check back next Tuesday for your first look at some of the Advanced Race Guide's new rules, with a focus on its woodsier wonders...

Really this time.

Very cool to see Ben Wootten back amongst the artists for Paizo's products.

What. The HELL. Is that last one?

I like it.

Centaur Variants

You know what the third one looks like?

Epic insectile template action.
Epiiiiicness.

Sovereign Court

"Woodsier wonders..." My guess is that the last thing is a wood/insect creature. Those tendrils are probably roots. Probably.

Mystery race looks like a spider to me.

If you're a centaur cavalier, what do you get instead of a mount?

the mystery race is a little bit too "modern" for my taste,

Really? It made me all nostalgic for the Umber Hulk illustration in AD&D 2E. I always wanted to play one of those...

I'd bet on counting as mounted for things like lance charges, and getting to ignore Mounted Combat as a prerequisite. Things like that.

I would like to think improvements to your racial features...? Hard to say, maybe the ability to be treated as a medium sized creature in some movement situations?

As you are the mount, you get a rider of course. Some lvl 1 commoner redneck who whips you when you slack down.

Great, now you just set the release date back by six months as the designers rush to fix this oversight.

Tired legs.

I'd bet on it. I always wanted to add large player races to my campaign but there were too many issues that cropped up.

The art for this book is looking AMAZING!

I can't wait to see the art for the bits I wrote :)

"Hey, guys, we need to get to Korvosa, let's go get some horses."

"Yes, you go waste money on a horse, I'll be waiting on our Centaur friend. And if we meet a monster on the way, I'll charge with my lance while he charges with his. Double lance devastating awesomeness!"

I just hope the Catfolk art still makes them look human in the face like in the Bestary 3 art and not like a cat's head on a human body.

Maybe the Kitsune art will have nine tails.

Hopefully the art for the Halfling will be female.

I really hope that some of the new race examples in race building chapter will have a plant based one, fey type one, a distant worlds rthemed one, and maybe a construct one.

Agreed. It looks like it has eight limbs, mandibles, and what looks to be spinnerets.

pretty sure you are looking at "distant worlds" one

Lol, kinda make sense.

Lol, kinda make sense.

Especially with the 1 rank in the Ride skill needed for Mounted Combat.

So easy to make kinky jokes with that.

Huh. You think those are hands.

Interesting.

You don't fool me. He's an Abominable HuggieBear (arachnoid variant of an owlbear).

Looks very cool.

But am I the only one who thinks the MysteryRace looks kinda like that bug boss from the upcoming Darksiders 2?

Y'know, the thing at 01.24 from this trailer. http://www.gametrailers.com/video/extended-debut-darksiders-ii/717621

Thank you for this post:), you made my day.

I love the mystery race it looks like the mantis trikeen like D&D. I hope its a playable race. The art looks more like a umber hulk and less like a tyranid. As for the comments about not liking it because it's a less human race who cares there are many places in the Pathfinder RPGS setting and Ebberron. A good GM can adapt it to any game. Fantasy isnt always Dwarf, human, elf, gnome, how boring that would be. Fantasy has to evolve to keep your players interested..

Kaer Maga might be a good place for unusual races, as the city is pretty much built in as a grimily cosmopolitan location where members of all sorts of races have agreed to live together in rowdy 'harmony'.

The Shackles might work too, just in my initial readthrough of the Skulls and Shackles path and the extras along with it, you have diverse entities like Hobgoblins, Cyclopses and Ogres interacting. I can imagine, say, a Crab-man on a pirate crew.

Katepesh might work too. They have gnolls going into cities there to trade in loot and slaves. With the Pactmasters working to insure trade betweeen all willing to trade; there's probably a pretty firm rule in the area that it doesn't matter what you look like, so long as you're into capitalism.
