Lessons from Gen Con

So much Ultimate Combat at the Gen Con booth!

Though I only joined the company a couple weeks ago, I was invited to join the rest of the team at Gen Con in Indianapolis. I was thrilled at the opportunity, since it would enable me to bolster our company's presence within the gaming community and meet some of our most passionate fans. In addition, the trip nurtured group cohesion within the company, and I'm happy to say I know many of my coworkers far better than I did before. All that being said, I am glad to be on familiar ground again. As for my Gen Con experience, I have the following words.

It was fun! It was exhausting. It was a lot of things. It reminded me of the retail job I had when I was 18 in some respects. It reminded me of the anime convention I went to when I was 15 in other respects. In most respects, though, it was totally unique and utterly impossible to describe. I met a lot of cool people, and I learned a lot of weird things. Things I learned:

  • There is a restaurant chain called Steak 'n' Shake.
  • Local coffee shops in Indianapolis close ridiculously early, usually around 3 p.m.
  • Our fans are awesome.
  • Some people still don't know all about Pathfinder (what!?) and are eager to learn about it.
  • I love Washington weather and will never complain about it again.

If my first Gen Con taught me one thing it's that no one can adequately prepare you for the spectacle and energy of this convention. (If it taught me another thing it's that I can apparently make do with a lot less sleep than I had previously thought.) Meeting all the fans who visited the Paizo booth was a real joy, and while I certainly do not possess the roleplaying expertise of James Jacobs or Jason Bulmahn—or any other Paizo employee for that matter—I had a lot of fun discussing our products with the endless stream of visitors. We really do have the best fans in the business.

We also get to work with the best artists in the business. As this was my first time attending Gen Con, I obviously can't compare it to previous years, but I was shocked by the number of talented artists who stopped by to say hi or to show us their portfolios. Meeting—and reconnecting with—artists is the best part of my job, and I can't think of a better venue for this than Gen Con (cue special shout out to Stephen Radney-MacFarland for introducing me to Larry Elmore). I can't wait for next year!

Todd...you have just described why I live here in Seattle. You can keep anything above 75. I'll take my 65 in July and like it, thank you very much.

I truly hate the heat (hot weather and Lebron's team alike). I try to avoid going outside if it's above 70F. I keep my house at 68F unless it's colder outside, and then I've been known to open the windows. I would transport the chunk of NC that provides me with a good job to somewhere in northwestern NJ if I could, just to enjoy the cooler weather and the snow.

But Indianapolis wasn't bad by comparison to the weather in NJ right now. :)

Sorry, Neil, but all the ACC basketball and Eastern-style barbecue in the state doesn't make 100+ degree temperatures and 110+ degree heat indexes enjoyable. The Washington state peeps have it good!

Luckily we have Five Guys here in Washington. For a fast food joint, their burgers are phenomenal.

Five Guys cant beat In-N-Out.

The Cali peeps know what I'm talking about. We have both here. Best burgers on the planet.

Neil,

Being native to NC (cannot say I'm a Tarheel as I went to NC State!)...you took the words right out of my mouth!

Wish I could have made it to Gencon this year. Maybe next year I can complain about Indy weather...

We have a lack of White Castle, Steak 'n' Shake, and Cracker Barrels here in central California.

We are just starting to get Five Guys.

I've heard of White Castle before Gen Con because Erik worships them.

I'd never heard of Steak 'n' Shake until my first Gen Con 8 or so years ago.

And I suppose I've heard the name "Cracker Barrel" before, but I have no idea what kind of place it is. I suspect some place that you fish handfuls of various crackers out of barrels?

It's the sort of sit-down place where old ladies go after church on Sundays. The food is pretty decent, though not spectacular. They also have a massive gift-shop with all sorts of kitchy things for you to peruse while waiting for a table.

It's also not a very vegetarian-friendly place. Even the side vegetables have meat in them!

Yeah, Steak 'n' Shake is tasty, but the burgers consistently make me sick. At least one I've almost missed my flight home because of it.

I live in a place with no White Castle or Five Guys (although we're supposed to be getting a Five Guys by the end of the summer), but we make do with a local place that's darn near as good as Five Guys.

Here in Cleveland, we have White Castles, 5Guys, and Steak'n'Shakes (all are good in their own way), but no In and Out Burgers. I've heard they're good. We recently got a Sonic here. I haven't tried it yet, though. Is it any good?

White Castle and Cracker Barrel only due to a road trip from Cincinnati back to California.

Steak 'n' Shake is a new one learned here.

I love Sonic. A lot. (But then, I love Steak 'n' Shakes too, so take that for what you will...) I think White Castle, though, is the devil. I still stop on occasion when I'm in Minneapolis, but only for the novelty. Good lord, they're steaming my burgers!

I am dying to try In-N-Out Burger (and Jack in the Box, both on my list of crazy American fast food places I've not yet been to).

Sorry to hear you got sick, James.

From my experience, Steak ‘n’ Shake has decent burgers, but I’ve definitely had better.

However, their shakes are some of the best I’ve had anywhere.

Cracker Barrel is Southern cooking, with all that implies. If you don't like meat, stay away, because yes, pork in your turnip greens is how it's cooked. Ditto for ham in the beans. If you think Cracker Barrel is bad food, try a Waffle House! Waffle House is the 3AM post-rpg debriefing room here in the south.

And White Castle just wishes it were Krystal.

To me the big plus for Steak 'n Shake other than the shakes that is. Is there burgers are nearly as good as most every day restaurants but not much more expensive than fast food. It kinda falls inbetween restaurant and fast food.

I'm gonna disagree with your assessment of Cracker Barrel - I think it's more like what non-Southerners THINK Southern cuisine is like. My mother is a Southern soul gourmet, and would disdain greatly anyone who judged our cooking by CB's offerings - especially the terrible biscuits and glue-like pasty gravy!

Cracker Barrel is a Southern Country Kitchen type restaurant. It also has a country style tourist storefront. The name is supposed to evoke the feel of the old general stores where the old men sat around & played checkers. Always keep in mind that the chain originated in Nashville, TN.

I will disagree with you on most of your assessment, except the gravy and biscuits thing. They are awful. But the restaurant IS Southern-style cooking, no doubt. Since it is a chain restaurant, it will never beat granny's cooking, but it sure ain't Au Bon Pain either.

When I visit family in San Diego for the Holidays my first meal coming from the airport is either a proper Animal style Double Double with Cheese with extra grilled onions or a real Carne Asada burito with real guacamole.

One of the things that amazes me about New York is the $20 burritos here can't hold a candle to a $3 burrito (the size of a prize fighter's fore arm) from San Diego. (That you can get 24 hrs a day!)

And while I can maybe eat one Steak N Shake burger at Gen Con, I have nothing but abject fear of Erik Mona's beloved White Castles! I just don't have that kind of constitution.

I would gladly give up the Sonics and Five Guys that are popping up all over the place around here in trade for In-and-Outs and White Castles.

Probably the only redeeming aspects of my multiple visits to California and New Jersey have been those places.

My favorite thing at Sonic: Happy Hour from 2-4. Nothing like a giant cherry limeade for a dollar.

Wow, I have *never* heard of so many issues with Steak & Shake.

It's been one of our family's favorite semi-fast food places since we discovered it outside of Cedar Point.

I even worked at the first one in Pittsburgh.

If you are having such issues, *let them know*.

Call back to the restaurant you were at, go to their website, contact the main office.

Sickness caused by food products at any food store/restaurant is unacceptable. But whatever caused it can't be fixed if no one in charge knows about it.

Harvey's has its moments -- though their meat is iffy. What you really want is Harvey's, but made with higher quality fresh ground beef. In Toronto, that place is called Apache Burger. There is only one and it's been there for ~fifty years. It does not need to pretend it is a 50's style burger place -- because it IS a 50's era burger place. The genuine article.

If you've never been to Apache, next time we're in Etobicoke for some PFS event? We're going there next time :)

On the whole Steak 'n Shake thing, during Gencon at least, the place is so damned busy it's ridiculous. Last week, I had one of their burgers while sitting down to eat -- and two other times I just took out my order and ate it outside. The quality difference was HUGE. The take-out line gives you your burger and onion rings piping hot; the sit down experience gives it to you cold and dried out under a heat lamp for 10+ minutes until whenever the harried waitress can get to it. It's Gencon and they are too damned busy.

During Gencon, go for take-out at Steak 'n Shake every time and you'll be vastly happier with the product.

The Exchange

Sorry to interrupt the fast food fest, but if you're looking for a really great place to eat at GenCon, then head to Sensu. It's one block behind the St. Elmo's steak house. Our group stumbled upon it quite by accident. It's higher-end, to be sure, but the sushi was delicious, and the Kobe beef ($26) was the best steak that I have ever eaten. The portions are made for sharing with with your group (like the rock shrimp tempura), so everyone can order different things to try. We also eat at St. Elmo's this year, and I was more impressed with the history and atmosphere than I was with the food. You may now resume your Steak and Shake discussion.

There was one in Grand Rapids when I lived there. I remember it's main attraction for me and my friends (in college at that time) was that it was open super late (possibly 24/7?) and the chili cheese fries were pretty good.

I'm not sure what your post means - does is mean that that is a reason some people haven't heard of it?

I live in Canada, BTW. So when Americans haven't even heard of all these places (never heard of Harvey's? Really?) in their very own country, I raise an eyebrow. Completely mystifying to me.
