Power Word Resolution

Wednesday, December 29, 2010

Like it or not, it's the time of the year when we reflect on the past and make plans for the future. Often this means resolutions. Sure, there are the typical resolutions. You promise yourself to avoid the temptations of gaming snacks (yeah, right!), exercise more (break out that Wii or Kinect), and quit your favorite nasty habit (yet again). But what about gaming resolutions? Have you thought about any of those yet? Well, to get you in the mindset, here are a few from around the office.

Game more! An impromptu poll around the office showed this was the most popular gaming resolution at Paizo. While we're surrounded by games every day, and some of us play in more games than our families might like, we're always hungry for more.

Mark Moreland wants to play more systems in the New Year, and he is not alone. That's always a goal here. If you couldn't tell, we all have a geekish curiosity about games in general, especially RPGs, and are always willing to play whatever game a brave and patient GM is willing to run.

As for running games, there are many of us who are looking to start new campaigns in 2011. Hyrum Savage wants to get his "The Dregs" campaign off the ground. It's something he brainstormed with Owen Stephens a couple of months ago. The premise is that everyone in the group was kicked out of their former adventuring group for being, well... not very good at adventuring. That's right, we're all going to playing the scrubs. Abilities are generated with 3d6s going straight down the line on the character sheet. I've already rolled up my stats: Str 11, Dex 7, Con 12, Int 10, Wis 8, Cha 6. While I don't expect my fighter—Muckle the Chucklehead—to live very long, I do expect the game will feature much telling of bad jokes and laughter, not necessarily in that order.

I'm trying to finagle my way into running a Curse of the Crimson Throne campaign. I know this will come into conflict with my wife's resolution of not have me run another campaign, but I've already started collecting miniatures for this game, so that's bad news for her.

Almost all of us are looking to be more productive in our geekery come 2011. Crystal Frasier is looking to release more Pathfinder and Mutants & Masterminds PDFs, and many of us want to get ahead on our multitude of projects, both at work and on the side. Everyone in the Tuesday minis-painting crew is hatching grand plans for next year's painting. I'm sure that group's ranks will swell at the start of 2011 when folks who are sorely behind on their minis painting (Bulmahn!) will make the effort to turn over a new leaf in the New Year.

Some of our resolutions are just downright odd. One of James Sutter's resolutions is to continue to spend James Jacobs's Sandpoint games yelling things like "BLOOD FOR THE BIRD GOD!" and "THE DARK LORD COMES!" every time his character, Kirin, sees a seagull. That and the well-meaning (but maybe futile) goal of not being the flakiest person in whatever game he's playing. Good luck with that, Sutter!

What about you? What gaming resolutions do you have for the New Year? Talk back at us on the Paizo messageboards and don't get upset if we end up stealing some of your resolutions as our own.

Post your 2011 gaming resolutions here, and don't get mad if some of us steal some really good ones.

To become a 4 Star Gen....I mean PFS GM before the end of 2011! Near impossible at my current pace...

To play a PC.
To actually finish a campaign.

Liberty's Edge

My players always enjoy the APs but have the complaint that they never get to capstone out a character.

The game I start right after the beginning of the year is going to go all the way to 20th level.

Liberty's Edge

Time to finish Rise of the Runelords. Also means it's time to decide if to use Karzoug as written or make him a Red Dragon (I've never gotten to use my Colossal Red Dragon model).

Which leads to resolution #2: I'll be restarting my AP subscription with the new year to begin collecting Carrion Crown. While I expect tons of spooky goodness from Paizo, I also mean to design a campaign to put the fear into a jaded group of gamers!

Dark Archive

To get my foot in the door, somewhere, somehow.

Dark Archive

To actually get to play in a game as a player, 30+ years as a GM is wearing me down.

And to take my 2 current campaigns I am running to the end or close to it.

Sczarni

To finish Second Darkness and start Carrion Crown by the end of 2011...so then I can make THAT my resolution in 2012. :P :)

Silver Crusade

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

In no particular order.

To finish Kingmaker (as a GM).

To have my Summoner survive Legacy of Fire (as a Player).

To WIN RPG Superstar 2011 (sorry guys).

Dark Archive

In our Council of Thieves Game:

To become the 'Kingmaker' of Westcrown, and from there become a power in Cheliax.

In PFS play:

To get two more PCs to level 12 and then help run PFS at Gencon with a benevolent hand of iron.

In other RPGs:

Get a Star Wars D6 campaign started.

In real life:

To finally build the Death Star III, and from there rule the world entire. With a non benevolent iron hand.

Sczarni RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

Actually get started in some PFS play in August-ish.

Start another campaign soon (LFP).

1) Either motivate my current ROTR group to finally care about the plot...or find a new one.

2) Complete Dragoneye and Archfiends.

3) Complete Rebel Storm.

4) GM a Victoriana Campaign.

5) Play some Axis & Allies Mini games.

6) Buy more 3d bits and pieces terrain.

7) GM a Star Wars PBP Campaign.

8) Expand the RPG room.

9) Read all Pathfinder Tales novels.

10) Get my Pathfinder/Gamemastery collection complete (until something new comes out) 6 publications missing...

1. Revise my NaNoWriMo Fantasy story.

2. Write some Pathfinder FanFiction.

3. Play instead of GM.

4. (Big One) Make time to actually read all the stuff I receive from my Pathfinder subscriptions!

Lantern Lodge

1. write up some first-level pregens and release them to the public (eg, find more time to explore HeroLab!);

2. write and submit a Pathfinder Society scenario;

3. play or GM (resurrect) an Adventure Path;

4. play a non-Core, non-APG (eg Bestiary 2 or third-party) race (or class);

5. homebrew TORG campaign using Pathfinder RPG / Pathfinder Modern rules;

Admittedly, this is more a wishlist than NY resolutions - some may happen, some may never happen, but it's nice to articulate them nonetheless.

Cheers,
DarkWhite

After 3 months of preparation finally start my 7-player Double-DM campaign.

Grand Lodge

To complete the ROTRL campaign I started last year, to start a Curse of the Crimson Throne Campaign, and try playing in a Pathfinder Society game. Oh, and painting, a lot more painting.

Liberty's Edge RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2013 Top 16

Finally finish STAP, after a 1.5 year hiatus courtesy Uncle Sam.

The Exchange

1. Buy new bookshelves (mine have quite literally collapsed under the weight of books on them, so some metal shelving units are in order me thinks).

2. Get back into painting miniatures, both fantasy figures like the awesome Pathfinder range and my WFB Chaos army, and start on a force for Warhammer 40k.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber; Pathfinder Starfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Roleplaying Game, Starfinder Society Subscriber

Finish up my terrain that is half started.

Finish painting my unpainted minis.

Run Jade Regent.

Win RPG Superstars. ;)

Liberty's Edge

Gotta finish painting miniatures! I've got a really backed up queue.

Scarab Sages

1. Write a PFS scenario every month for 12 months.

2. Prep for RPG Superstar 2012.

3. Run a successful Serpent's Skull campaign.

4. Survive in a Rise of the Runelords campaign.

5. Know the Pathfinder/Golarion IP forwards and backwards by the end of the year.

Now these are two resolutions I can get behind. I also need new shelves and more minis painting!

Finish a campaign (for the first time) no matter what! Or continue to work on it if it goes beyond 2011.

A better understanding of the other players: their motivation, their fun-aspect of the game etc.

I submitted my entry yesterday, and my fingers are crossed!

1. Finish my current Curse of the Crimson Throne campaign; the first campaign I will have run from the beginning to its end. :) Just about half-way through.

2. Survive Rise of the Runelords... Damn.

3. Not sleep at PaizoCon so I don't miss out on any of the awesome games (and play in James' game again if he runs one this year). In this, find the few remaining signatures I am missing to retire my well-loved and worn 1st edition CRBs.

4. Run my first tabletop game! EEEEEEEEEEE! I am totally taking suggestions as to what to run first.

5. Finish collecting the remaining books I need of the APs.

6. Lose another 40+ pounds AND keep it off!! (No more snacks for me, that's for sure.)

7. Submit an entry for RPGSS 2012. (Still have time to do it for 2011... Think brain, THINK!)

....in Germany....they speak nerd there right?

To find or shanghai enough fellow furry geeks to start a pathfinder Dragonstar like campaign. Local to me of course that way when I throw in all the races I created for the Pathfinder Database folks will want to play them. I still want to do science fantasy space opera but there will be no dragons as ruling emperors, no drow, no duergar, no mind flayers, the idea of a shadow zone is too good to pass up but I have my own ideas as to what goes on there and what nasties come from there. The main idea is more Star Wars hears the Call of Cthulhu using whatever monsters are in the SRD that I have not already come up with. I'm waiting for my code to become valid before I buy the psionics book for Pathfinder but that's going into the mix too. I'm also going to try and adapt the Tome of Secrets and what I have from the Genius Guides to this as well. especially what's been published as a printed book.

To challenge my players even more.

The Exchange

To write (and finish) more Pathfinder fan fiction!

To finish a Pathfinder campaign (my group quit Second Darkness, but we're doing well with Council of Theives)!

This year it's all about "Less is More".

As something of an alpha-magpie-OCD-collecting-gamer I'm trying to streamline my hobbies, and achieve mastery and enjoyment out of the things I truly enjoy instead of always losing focus in the clutter because I'm caught up in the new shiny hotness.

1) Reduce and streamline my RPG collection to the 3 or 4 that scratch multiple itches. Pathfinder, 40K RPG line, working on the others.

2) Get down to one CCG/LCG - Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings

3) Kick all the other miniature wargames to the curb and focus in on 40K - more painting, more modelling. (Sorry Malifaux, et al)

4) Less videogames that I'm really not interested in, but feel the need to play because of their AAA status.

5) Boardgames streamlined to the ones that actually see table time or best represent a mechanic I enjoy.

All of this really is to make more time to:

6) Play more :)

1. I landed my job on the opposite side of the country after starting the final adventure in the Rise of the Runelords campaign. My players still get together and are currently running Kingmaker, but I want to finish up that campaign, even if it's over the internet.

2. Play more WoW and DDO.

3. Not be sick during the days we're supposed to be playing the Serpent's Skull.

4. Finish novel.

5. Get novel published.

6. Golarion video game built on the Neverwinter Nights 2 platform.

7. Contribute new material to official Pathfinder products.

Might I suggest Dust Tactics, which you can get hear at the Paizo store (and use your holiday discount to boot).

After several years haitus I finally get to play some Space Hulk next week!

To have a very successful Legend Of The Five Rings RPG (the d10 version) on Monday nights. That game has a very different feel to D&D/Pathfinder and I'm looking forward to expanding my ability to think on the spot plus allow my players to make up stories within the game (in addition to me storytelling) thereby giving material for me to build off of right away and vica verca.

Very exciting and scary for me!

Surely m'lord baron is jesting; aren't You, sir, already one of the most influential nobles in our glorious nation? (And now that I mentioned it, perhaps m'lord baron could put in a good word for me and get our Blessed Majestrix to pardon me? After all, am I not the wronged party here, a victim of my own kind heart in trusting that treacherous blackguard, KaeYoss?)

Finish up the last adventure for the Curse of the Crimson Throne campaign I'm running.

Start Kingmaker

Silver Crusade

To get my homebrew Golarion campaign off the ground shortly after World Guide: The Inner Sea releases. This would be my first foray into GMing an ongoing thing live.

1. Finish up a few scenario outlines for the PFS.

2. Continue on with RPG Superstar 2011.

3. PaizoCon...can't wait for this...

4. Teach my dog that she can co-exist with squirrels. Please do not ask me about the incident. Augh. The crunching sounds...still haunt me. :)

5. Participate in as many APs and PFS scenarios as humanly possible.

6. Write, write, read, then write some more...

Don't say yes to any new campaigns, unless it is replacing a current one. The only exception is maybe running a Star Wars Saga game to introduce my children (6 and 8 yrs old) to roleplaying later in the year.

Paint at least one miniature a week on average. Buy miniatures at a rate of one to every two painted to get through some of the large amount of unpainted lead on my painting desk.

Here's the Star Wars Crawl creator that you can use to start off each of your Star Wars 'episodes'.
