The sexiness factor has more to do with female competiveness/self-consciousness than trying to win a contest. As far as I know there isn't any contest at PaizoCon. I'm dressing up as Sheyln, not Kira (no offense to kira, but most people would say she's not a particularly sexy iconic) - sexiness and beauty is a must.
As for guys, you have it a lot easier, unless you're playing a character that has his abs showing - then you're probably going to be self-conscious if you aren't a huge fan of the gym.
Sajan costume! It uses a minimum of material! He's the most revealing iconic! :p

And incidentally, I'd mark Jenny's costume down for using anachronistic high-heeled plastic pumps instead of leather sandals. It also lacks a red headpiece pulling her hair back in an authentic Seoni hairstyle.
Still working on better ribbons and the head-piece. While I originally had thought I could complete this in 1 month, all the silk-screening (there's tons on the back of the dress) took ages. Therefore, I prioritized the most important pieces so she'd be recognizable by PaizoCon, and figured I'd get her the last few smaller (albeit really time-consuming) pieces when we meet-up at DragonCon.
So yeah, the headdress and rune-covered ribbons are still in-progress...

If it makes you feel better, I'd likely be able to go only as a bloat mage or as a Graul Ogre. :-)
I've threatened to dress up as "The White Power Ranger, 20 years later."
"I can't find the remote! I can't find my morpher under my belly! Kimberly get me a mighty morphing power beer!"
Bloat mages unite!

Just as long as you don't bring live leeches. That would be exceedingly gross. And unsanitary. And the hotel would probably ask you to leave. You might be able to say they are "magic-aiding leeches," but I don't think that will fly. :)
Just wear dark sunglasses and call them 'guide leeches'.

Awesome dress & gorgeous chick...but damn I'm going to be really self-conscious. Glad I'm planning only to dress up for the Banquet at PaizoCon.If it's any comfort, while Jenny had planned to attend PaizoCon, her time got preempted by a photo shoot this weekend — left for Costa Rica yesterday. She is still planning to attend GenCon and DragonCon though as far as I know.
Also remember that getting dressed up is it's own reward. Unless it's specifically your goal to be competitive or join an actual contest then don't sweat it. Trust me, as long as you aren't a big hairy man dressed up like Sailor Moon neither you nor anyone else should ever feel embarrassed about getting into costume at a sci-fantasy/gaming convention. Just have fun! :)
DAMN YOU LAITHORON!!!! I did not need the reminder of Sailor Bubba.

Two costume stories, one spoilered for the weak hearted.
I was talking with one of the 'chain mail model babes' at Origins one year. We were actually talking about Larry Elmore's art since he was at the con. She seemed disconcerted that I was able to be friendly, conversational, and make eye contact.
For refernence, I'm the big guy in the loud shirt

Winning a costume contest doesn't really have anything to do with being sexy though...you could dress up like one of the ugliest monsters in the Bestiary and probably win because those are the most difficult costumes. I think what they're going for is someone who really took time to pay attention to detail on the costume.
I do want to let everyone know who is entering the actual GenCon Costume Contest Event that you have to 'make your own' costume to be in the normal level of competition. Anyone who has bought their costume or had it made by someone else will have to enter into their professional category. They said I barely got by on that one because I make posing suits but since I do not regularly make costumes I would be able to do the regular categories. Now, if I were going to wear one of my posing suits then I'd have to do professional, but I got lucky! So just make it yourself and you can compete with your level of more-fair competition.
Also remember ANY competition is completely subjective. I run into this all the time in figure/bodybuilding competitions. Everyone looks great, but someone has to win. It's a shame but it's true...you cannot let it go to heart because anyone, in my opinion, that participates should be noticed. :o)
If it would make you all feel better about competing in something like this, I would be happy to get a list of names, take your pictures, and post them on my website, facebook, or blog just so you'll make sure to get the attention you deserve for working hard to make a costume yourself.
A person does not have to be a model to be attractive or sexy. ;o) After all, I am not a model...lmao J/K!!!

And...just wanted to throw this out there...if any of you are needing help (as in advice or ideas) you're welcome to chat me up on facebook. That way we can help each other do our best on the costumes! I use a lot of materials other people would never think to use. It's because I've always had to investigate things so much due to lack of a good local craft store. Now I have lots of stores...but still tend to be creative with random things!
To me it's more of a "competing WITH" people rather than "competing AGAINST" people... :o) Why not make it fun?!
Ciao!

Ok Jodi,
What is a posing suit vs a costume? I'd never heard that term.

Hi Everyone!
Just catching up with this blog thread: ThanX for all those who took the time to say a few nice words! Laithoron deserves all the credit for his hard work and AMAZIN job! I just wore the costume and stood there holding a staff! :-)
FYI: I m NOT planning on entering any costume contest at Gen Con or any of the other Cons. I don't want people to be turned off at entering any costume contests for whatever reason.
That being said I DO plan to parade in the costume at Gen Con and Dragon Con (and maybe NeonCon) this year so expect to see me all dressed up! :-)
Big Kiss
Jenny

Why would people be turned off at entering a costume contest? It's just for fun. :o)
But if anyone is interested in the contest and you are having trouble locating the forms on the GenCon website, just give me a holler and I'll help you out--They're kinda hard to find at first. The girl, Anne, who runs the contest is really nice to help as well! :o)
Ciao!

I think it's obvious, but Jenny in that particular costume looks... really good. :)
Exactly! It was a great choice for her look! That's why before I said the best way to create a great costume, is to pick a costume that suits you well. That's why I chose Amiri. I am lucky that I can look the part somewhat--because I love Amiri! I'm just much shorter, but I do have an athletic build like she does and the darker hair. Plus, I'm sort of a barbarian myself haha! :o)
So, if you're wanting to do a Pathfinder costume, just kinda look through the books and see what you would play best!
I really, really hope there are a ton of Iconics costumes at GenCon this year, and I am glad that I'll be able to carry the giant GREATSWORD!

Kvantum wrote:Yes, Jenny certainly does look the part, she just needs the tattoos. Seoni without the tattoos is like Lini without the cat. That would be hours of body painting.
Actually, I have a great idea for how that could be done for her costume without using body paint, but she would have to use the paint on her face :o)

Yeah, maybe something like that, but I have a lot more details but I don't want to bore this thread with those! :o)

Yep, that's actually what led me to first write Jenny and pitch the idea to her. I thought, "She'd make a great Seoni!" Still trying to figure out what Paizo character would suit me though mind you... ^_^;

That's what I tell everyone who wants to dress up but feels like they would be a little uncomfortable. 1) Dress as something you can pull off well and 2) Dress as something you'll be comfortable as. Because it's all about fun here people! You'll have more fun if you look a lot like your character and more fun if you're comfortable! :o)

Hah! Aww! Thanks for the compliment, I appreciate it! The closest I get to being a model is playing in costumes at conventions and competing in figure competitions, you know the fun parts! I like working with models and clients(posing suits) for their photo shoots or whatever they need...I definitely like the entire environment of it and I have made some great friends over the years.
After seeing Cirque Du Soleil last night, I really want to start doing some crazy-lovely costumes. I think that show will inspire me for years to come!!! We had a great time. :o)

I'm really hoping to meet a lot of cool peeps from the boards at Gencon. I think I am going to try to get as many of "Me as Amiri" pictures with fellow Paizo fans--fun! :o) I can't wait!
I won't be there (would be nice to see Sean in the flesh) but I hope to send an emmisary to pick up stuff for me ;-)

I can finally, officially say that I will have a costume this year! I'm am so excited, especially since last year was such a fiasco.
Hope to see lots of people in costume this year!
That's awesome! Who are you going as? An iconic or?
Definitely come see us at the booth! I want pics with peeps from the boards!

I'll be coming as the harrower. It was supposed to be my costume last year, but all the plans fell through at the last moment, so it didn't happen.
I wonder what day everyone will wear their costumes. It would be great to get a giant group picture. I was planning to wear mine on Saturday.
I will definitely be at the booth.

I've been wearing mine every day of the Con! I worked so hard on it that I must wear it as much as possible! I wore it the most so far on Friday--4 hours. I think that is my limit lmao! It is so fun that tons of people want pictures of me or with me! I could do this all day long!!!! :o) If anyone has pictures, please post them! I Want to see!
