Having arrived in Minata in the southeastern part of Tian Xia, you meet up with your guide, Arong, along the beach. It’s crowded with fishing boats getting ready to head out in the early morning hours but Arong easily spots the Pathfinder adventurers who are clearly out of place. ”Magandang umaga,” he greets you enthusiastically with a high five, or a respectful wave should someone refuse or seem uncomfortable. ”I was told to give these to you, but I don’t know what they say.” He then passes over a parcel containing the following: a brief from Valashinaz, a letter from Taiwalei, and a bag of holding spacious pouch (type II). With that done, he leads you all to his boat, the Saranggola, explains that the name means “kite,” and promises a swift and smooth journey.

As the Saranggola’s sails pick up a fair wind, the dock and coastline of Binocol swiftly fade away in the distance behind the vessel. With Binoco Isle located due east, it’s almost as if Arong is sailing the boat straight toward the rising sun. Once the small ship eases into a respectable speed, Arong exclaims, “Look, or you’ll miss it!” With a wide grin, he gestures around with an oar in hand as the dark morning waters ripple to the beat of the wind. “Now, for just a hair of the day, you’ll see nothing but the ocean’s gift. Watch. Wonder! And thank the world that it is a good morning to sail!”

Then, as far as the eye can see, there’s only water. Streaks of orange light cut through the Okaiyo Ocean’s dark blue surface, disrupted by just the ship’s bow nudging water away into gaggles of white foam ahead of the vessel. The air smells not just of salt, but of the life teeming beneath the surface. Eventually, as the sun continues to climb, a speck appears on the horizon, growing with each moment. There looms an island topped with a verdant jungle. A beach of white-yellow sand approaches fast ahead, beaming like a mischievous grin plastered in contrast to the dense greenery behind it, and palm trees sway to the ocean breeze as if in greeting.

This would be a great opportunity to introduce yourselves to each other and/or ask questions of your guide.

Minata!

CLAP-POW

An easy high-fiver (actually: her first. But a phenomenal follow when it comes to dance, Tao instinctually gleans the custom), our extraverted hero responds in kind "Sveikinimai Tau" in her native tongue, before switching into Taldan "I can respect a knowledgeable captain on their humble craft, no sweat" having glanced at the note from Taiwalei, adding "Fire is not my personal forte - I deal in souls, ghosts, and life!" she looks around her gathering crew, bragging "Haven't lost anyone yet neither. Stick close, and we'll make it out alive together"

Aboard the Saranggola, Tao sleeps in late, and stays up very late, poised, if needed, to support navigation by starlight, or otherwise, to gaze upon them with a concentrative looks of study. Especially when all masses of land disappear from all horizons, and the ocean is bespeckled with only tiny reflections of diamonds.

Writ of the Stars:

"To wit or wise, to value without understanding is to have none at all"

As the foresty island's beach fast approaches, she queries their guide "Are you born of Okaiyo, or a frequent visitor?" and "Have you met Purepurin, or Valashinaz - do you find them pleasant?" even "Do you come from a small or large family?" she then proceeds to answer her own questions (probably first if Arong is slow-tongued comparatively - and quite likely!) so as to make him feel as if a possible intrusion of privacy at least wasn't a one-way caravan highway "Me? I've travelled most of my life, mostly around Varisia, with my many aunties, uncles, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews... it wasn't until my Calling that I came to widen my spiral" she draws one with her expressive hands in the air - bigger and more circumferent slowly each time "But I haven't met the dragon or her acquaintance. Probably just called in because I am reliable and do well with large crowds" she counts 8 total - including the eidolon and the animal companion - among her protectorate "Anyway. I am excited to begin! So lovely here!!" her over-exuberance only eclipsed by the strange "occurences" that happen now and again and again; her belongings (jingle and click), her hair (blows without wind), her wandering attention (side conversations to herself), meddled with by some unseen perturbant force...

Khaul looks at the craft with a little doubt, and the deep seas below it with significantly more. "Ay think ay'll be stickin ta the middle of yah boat if that be alright." he suggests to Arong. "I'd hate for me mass to be upsetin th' balance."

A man in fine attire has been standing back for the time being. He could stand to spend some time in the sun as his pale skin looks ashen and sickly. His breathing is slow, almost deliberate as if he were on the brink of death. Yet still, his movements are graceful, refined without the rigor of death.

"A stranger shore upon this I alight. Glowing with warmth most palpable. A paradise to the visitor and bounty to its inhabitants."

"Allow me the honor of an introduction. I am Aleksandr Ostenoff once famed thespian of the opera houses of Caliphas. Now here I am far away from home both in distance and in culture, seeking the balance between life and death, the flux betwixt myself and my beloved."

Aleksandr extends a hand, the outline of a rose appears on the back of his hand and fills itself in as if a tattoo were being magically inked before your very eyes. A ripple appears in the air as the aether roils though the breach. A slender hand, ghostly but with a similar tattoo reaches through the rift. Aleksander grasps the hand and pulls the spirit through. She stand nearly as tall as the beaming man who summoned her. her dress is just as fashionable and her features denote an obvious auivarian heritage.

"This is Imelia, an maestra of the opera tragically cut down in her prime. Though the chill touch of death has tinged her voice with righteous anger, confuse her not for some banshee. For the life I have given flows through her as much as the curse which have taken upon myself through me."

”Born of Okaiyo? Of the ocean?” Arong laughs. ”No, I’m not a sea-elf or an undine or anything like that, but all of us here do have an attachment to the sea. But to answer what I think you were asking, yes, I’m native Minatan. My family has been here in Binocol for generations. In fact,” he pauses as he adjusts the trim of the sail just a bit and then stares at the upcoming island for another bit longer. “My grandfather used to tell me how he lived through the worst typhoon to hit Minata in living memory. That was about 80 years ago. Him, his family, everyone they knew—they almost permanently left Binocol with conditions being so bad, and the island we’re heading to now was almost completely swallowed by the Okaiyo. When the weather and water levels finally settled, they thought it best to just leave Binoco Isle and the temple alone, and Valashinaz suggested as much.”

He shakes his head, ”And, no, I’ve never met the Dragon.”

The boat ride is only a couple hours. More questions? I would also take a secret Occultism check. If you want to, please post your modifier.

"What we sees on island?" Lokaloka inquires.

Grand Lodge

Skymetal Hoard slides

”I didn’t know there was a hoard of skymetal there. Never heard that rumor. Not that it would matter; no one would try to rob Valashinaz. As to what I do know is there, there’s trees! Wildlife, perhaps a boar if you are lucky! Oh, and maybe, a pack of akatas—they were an offering that Valashinaz apparently kept as pets, you see, and roamed free there when my ancestors still actively worshipped at the temple, before the island was abandoned. There shouldn’t be any people living there at all, but you never know who or what else might wash up on these islands. Ain’t strange for less experienced navigators to be waylaid in the Okaiyo, so consider yourself lucky with me! And thank the winds, the waters, and the sky, as always.”

At the mention of akatas, Lokaloka remembers what she heard about them when she met Valashinaz and Purepurin.

Lokaloka’s Crit success on the Occultism check:
An akata typically spawns from humanoids, but sometimes, an akata develops altered physiology and abilities that relate to the nature of the humanoid they spawned from. In even rarer cases, a particularly special host can spawn a noticeably larger, more powerful akata.

An akata has adverse reactions to salt water. Mild exposure can cause pain and discomfort, but fully immersing it in salt water will prove lethal.
====End Spoiler===

When she (presumably) shares this in her own unique way, Arong adds, “Right! Akatas are like hairless blue dogs that don’t make a sound. And they have tentacles for a mane! And if you see one, you’re supposed to avoid eye contact and back away slowly—Wait, that’s... that’s maybe a different beast.” Arong shrugs. “I haven’t actually seen an akata myself, but I don’t imagine they like to be bothered.”

Then when Lokaloka mentions having met Valashinaz, he gapes. ”You’ve met her! That must have been amazing! We used to worship Valashinaz, but not for a long while now. Even though it’s been a long time, there are no hard feelings between us, still much respect for her—” Arong places a fist over his heart before making a peace sign. Then, he muses, “Now that I think of it, her temple was a pretty important place, wasn’t it? With treasure worth hiding… You’ll probably find some traps around or inside, right? Or at least what’s left of them. But you Pathfinders probably know lots about getting into ancient ruins safely, already! “

Arong nods sagely before raising a finger in point. “But maybe something you don’t know is that in Minata, we pay our respects to anito - nature spirits - when moving in places overtaken by nature. Once you start hiking through the jungle, kindly ask the anito for permission. Something like, ‘May I pass?’ or ‘Please move aside,’ while you walk along. That’s usually enough! Courtesy is key! Though if you prefer giving gifts instead of just asking—” He reaches into a satchel, pulls out a rice cracker, and noisily crunches on it. “—then offering a treat might do just as nicely.”

”Oh, right, and speaking of being polite to the spirits, please be polite to the land. You Pathfinders have a certain reputation.” He pauses and raises his eyebrows with a smirk. ”When they heard you were coming, the Binocolan elders asked me to pass on a message. While they won’t hold it against you to defend yourselves or take lethal measures against hostile fauna and other creatures, they do ask that you stay mindful of the surrounding environment when it comes to using fire-based magic and other similarly destructive abilities.”

He pauses to gaze worriedly at the waters as he thinks such thoughts. ”The anito would appreciate it, too.”

I will move us onto the beach tomorrow morning USA Eastern time.

Arong ties the Saranggola up to an dock that clearly has not seen much if any use in a very long time. As you step onto the beach above the high-water mark, he points inland. “They tried to build the temple as close to the middle of Binoco Isle, where the elevation would’ve been highest. It should be the biggest structure there. Probably hard to miss. So! Head inland, move toward the center! And good luck, Pathfinders,” he says with two thumbs up and a huge grin.

Moving inland, it is as if stepping into another world, the crashing waves and billowing winds have been replaced by a chorus of insects, calling birds, and critters ruffling through leaves and undergrowth. The jungle ahead is a mosaic of lush green interspersed by tree trunks peeking through, fallen branches, and the yellow-green leaves of banana trees. Traces of the salty sea breeze give way to that of damp foliage. With the canopy shielding much of the ground from the sun, the surroundings feel several degrees cooler but all the more humid. Each step into the undergrowth brings a moment of uncertainty, as plants mask whether a spot is of steady ground or a pool of water or mud simply covered by foliage. Even where the canopy gives way to more sunlight in a clearing, there’s only more lush jungle in the distance beyond.

Slowly, it dawns on each of you that your surroundings have gone completely silent except for the party’s movements and voices.

The jungle quickly returns to its normal active state once everyone acts with reverence and respect. The anito seem most pleased with Khaul’s tone and offering. While decades of jungle growth have likely covered most traces of habitation, some signs remain or have been brought back to the fore thanks to inclement weather.

As a result of Khaul’s Crit Success on the check, he may use the following Special Exploration Activity if he wishes to. Spoilered for brevity, not for secrecy.

BEFRIEND THE ANITO:

Tags: Concentrate, Exploration, Manipulate

By offering a prayer, a dedication, a physical gift of food or incense, or a combination of the above, you attempt to befriend the local anito. Attempt a DC 23 Diplomacy, Nature, or Religion check. If you provide an offering that involves Minatan delicacies (such as the snacks Arong had available during your voyage), you gain a +2 circumstance bonus to this check.

Critical Success As success, but the anito are exceptionally pleased with the character’s tribute, so all PCs benefit from the anitos' guidance once while traversing the jungle.

Success The anito are pleased with the character’s tribute. The character who Befriended the Anito (Khaul) gains the benefit of the anitos' guidance: once while in the jungle, the character can choose to gain a +2 bonus to a skill check’s result, which can potentially turn a failure into a success and so on.

Failure The area’s anito accept your offering, but nothing else happens.

Critical Failure The area’s anito take offense at your offering. The spirits make traversing the jungle particularly taxing for the character who attempted to Befriend them. By the time the PCs reach the temple, that character must succeed at a DC 25 Fortitude save or become fatigued by their trek through the jungle.
===End Spoiler===

I now need 2 Perception Checks from each PC. There is no penalty for Failure or Crit Failure, so please don’t waste Hero Points on this.

In addition, if Khaul elects to use the Befriend the Anito Exploration Activity (regardless of his success or failure on the check in the spoiler), he automatically succeeds at one of these 2 Perception checks, and thus only has to make 1 Perception check.

The anito do seem pleased by Khaul’s offering and by how much he appreciates the beauty of their land. Though they take no overt action, the dwarf certainly feels inspired by their presence. Gazing with wonder at a particularly large tree, he happens to spot a large, waterlogged piece of sharpened wood, grown over with moss as it leans tilted against a tree. His mastery of crafting lets him easily determine that this piece of wood was likely once used in a pit trap of some sort.

Marigold spots a wild boar scurrying among the trees. She quickly loses track of the animal, but then notices a torn backpack hanging precariously from a branch. Its contents are nowhere to be seen, but when she points it out to Tao, the oracle can tell that it likely hasn’t been there for more than a year based off the bits of plant growth over it and the aging of its material.

Lokaloka looks up from her pickle and happens to spy several waterlogged bamboo poles sticking out among the landscape. She’s sure that this material is commonly used in some types of Minatan housing, but based off its apparent age and signs of wear, the structures had likely been destroyed or washed away decades ago.

When the Pathfinders suddenly emerge into an unexpected clearing, Mindartis evaluates the scene with a hunter’s eye. The clearing features a noticeably thinner underbrush due to the area being used as a campsite, and she is certain that the site is at least a few months old and that any tracks and other traces of who camped here have long since been weathered away or covered beyond distinction.

Waiting for Aleksandr to give it a go, and then we’ll get to the good stuff next event.

Imelia watches where she is going better than Aleksandr does, thus she spots several trees and branches in a nondescript pattern that feature pieces of rope and knots tied to them. Pointing them out to her summoner, he can tell the type of rope and knots used seem to vary in material and age, hinting that these signs were left at different points in time and likely by different individuals over the years.

Moving across a small stream, she also notices that the trunks of larger trees feature spots where bark has been chipped away and branches have broken or otherwise given out. Pointing this out to Khaul, he gleans that these signs came from something climbing over these trees.

And then just as several of the party members cross the stream, Tao spots a rope trap laid in the jungle path. Stopping to examine it, and peering further north down the path, the rest of the team sees another rope net trap that has been sprung and which now contains a person - maybe. Or at least it contains something. Upon seeing you, it brays ”BRAAAIIIINS!!!!” and the cry draws the attention of several other shuffling forms from within the dense foliage who move to feast upon Pathfinder brains!

Horizontal Jump: up to 10 feet horizontally if your Speed is at least 15 feet, or up to 15 feet horizontally if your Speed is at least 30 feet. You land in the space where your Leap ends (meaning you can typically clear a 5-foot gap, or a 10-foot gap if your Speed is 30 feet or more). You can't make a horizontal Leap if your Speed is less than 15 feet.
Vertical Jump: up to 3 feet vertically and 5 feet horizontally onto an elevated surface.

The springy soles of these sturdy leather boots cushion your feet and make each step lighter. These boots give you a +5- foot item bonus to your Speed and a +2 item bonus to Athletics checks to High Jump and Long Jump. In addition, when you use the Leap action, you can move 5 feet further if jumping horizontally or 3 feet higher if jumping vertically.

You can jump 5 feet up with a vertical Leap without making a High Jump. You also increase the horizontal distance when you Leap, including as part of a High Jump or Long Jump, by 5 feet.

You can use High Jump and Long Jump as a single action instead of 2 actions. If you do, you don’t perform the initial Stride (nor do you fail if you don’t Stride 10 feet).
