Destiny of Sands | Q16 | Lost Maid of Anactoria | Year of Era's End

The last of the winged constructs is destroyed.

COMBAT OVER

The remains of the anacite can now be readily examined.

Engineering or Physical Science (DC 12):
You determine that the anacite was hit by laser weapons way more powerful than the ones on the winged constructs.

Engineering or Medicine (DC 13):
You notice that the anacite is missing two arms, which were removed by skilled hands.

Culture or Mysticism check (DC 15):
You recollect that some anacites choose to mark their bodies with colorful alloys as a form of self-expression—the fiery patterns on the anacite are an example of this trend.

The toppled column is covered with complex glyphs and can also be examined.

If you use Kinpopo’s device on the glyphs:
The lexicon flashes complex equations as it isolates phonemes and reconstructs key morphemes, reconstructing the word for “threshold” or “end.”

The nest where the one winged construct originated can be examined too.

If you do so:
You find a mk 1 mobility enhancer, a brown force field and a heavily damaged shortwave receiver-transmitter.
With a successful DC 16 Computers or Engineering check, a PC can embed the shortwave device into one of their communicators and configure to broadcast an alert if shortwave activity is detected nearby.

Destiny of Sands | Q16 | Lost Maid of Anactoria | Year of Era's End

Traveling on, the party comes to the distribution node, a squat building with smooth stone walls reinforced with rows of thick hexagonal metal plates. The building’s tall entry doors are open, revealing a dark and
shadowed interior hall littered with debris.

The building entry is crisscrossed by numerous unusual tracks, some treads and some more insectile.

Survival (DC 12):
You determine that the tracks lead into the facility and belong to three medium-sized anacites.

Once inside, the the utilitarian look of the distribution node’s walls is replaced by a 30-foot-long hallway with long curved walls adorned with mirror-like lenses and devices with delicate antennas.

Special care has been taken to isolating this entire section of the hall between two shutter-type hexagonal doors. The nearest door is open, and the furthest door is closed.

Nearby, a holographic panel flickers to life, shutting the aperture of the nearest door. Moments later, electricity sparks on the wall, dancing from antenna to antenna as a swarm of nanites briefly sweeps the room, performing some kind of cleansing procedure. As the swarm disappears, the second hexagonal door blooms open for a few seconds before closing again, as the process is repeated in reverse in an endless loop.

Each PC may attempt one or more of the checks below:

Perception check (DC 15}:
You notice that no more than a single door is ever open at once, and that no doors are open during the cleansing procedure in the room ahead.

Engineering, Life Science, or Medicine(DC 15):
You understand that the hall ahead is a malfunctioning decontamination chamber meant to purge biological contaminants. Although the room ahead is empty before the decontamination protocols involving the nanites swarms begin, it would appear that a defective lifesense array is erroneously detecting organic matter in the room ahead, causing the process to repeat endlessly. This cycle is probably responsible for the strange energy spikes that Sarmak had noted.

A PC that wishes to hack into the console may attempt a Computers checks.

What do you wish to do, Starfinders?

All of the above spoilers can now be opened.

Again, the holographic panel flickers to life. The aperture of the nearest door shuts. Electricity sparks on the wall before a swarm of nanites briefly sweeps the room. The swarm then disappears and the second hexagonal door at the far end of the room opens briefly, before closing again.

Mechanically, the decontamination room is a trap that the party must now disable.

The process repeats, caught in an endless loop.

A PC may attempt a Computers check to hack into the console outside of the decontamination room.

Computers (DC 18):
You have hacked into the system. Unfortunately, the dangers posed by the decontamination room are caused primarily by a malfunction.
The DC of all checks to disable the trap are reduced by 2.

It is clear that the Starfinders will have to make it through this decontamination room in order to advance further into the structure and that any efforts to thwart the decontamination process must be attempted from within the room.

What do you wish to do, Starfinders?

I am fine with you taking 10 on this as Siliur and the other PCs are currently outside of the room and have time.

Taking his time, Siliur manages to hack into the system. Unfortunately, the dangers posed by the decontamination room are caused primarily by a malfunction. Therefore, he is only able to slow the activities
The DC of all checks to disable the trap are reduced by 2.

As their fellow Starfinders hacks into the system, the party is able to confirm a few observations. The nearest door and the farthest door, which is found at the other end of the decontamination room, are never open at the same time. Whenever both doors are shut, the room is filled with a nanite swarm that scours the room.

It remains clear that the Starfinders will have to make it through this decontamination room in order to advance further into the structure and that any efforts to thwart the decontamination process must be attempted from within the room.

To help us from getting bogged down, I will try a little more transparency behind the "GM screen". Mechanically, the decontamination room is a trap that the PCs must disable or survive in order to proceed.

I welcome any creative solutions, but I will reveal the options that the adventure considers: 1) simply walk through the room and try to endure the nanite swarm (Reflex save); 2) jam a door open (Athletics check); 3) divert power out of the chamber (Engineering check); reconfigure the sensors to target anomalous cell profiles rather than all organic matter (Medicine); or disable the lifesense hybrid array (Mysticism). As noted above, I am open to alternatives that the PCs may wish to try and the DCs of above skill checks are reduced by 2.

Alternatively, I would also a Medicine check to reconfigure the system to target anomalous cell profiles rather than all organic matter or a Mysticism check to disable the lifesense hybrid array.

Siliur Vinclad wrote:

Indeed, it is! The door opens.

Trap avoided. Well done!

With the decontamination protocol disabled, the power fluctuations stop.

If you are fitted with a shortwave receiver:
You detect a shortwave transmission that has been sent toward the door to identify the trespasser. This burst of shortwave communication lasts only a second or two.

Past the decontamination room, is a large, imposing shipment bay is fitted with an array of machinery needed to package, sort, and load enormous quantities of goods. As the party enters from the north, brilliant light filters into the room from a series of three rooms to the east, casting dim light and long shadows.

To the south, near seamless bay doors are raised a few feet. The room is noisy from the whirr of servos and the clank of metal.

In the middle of the shipment bay is a large, four-armed construct supported by two sets of mechanical, spider-like legs. The construct is currently sorting through a few crates near the room’s center.

When its optic sensors scan your arrival, the construct curiously turns toward you.

"Hello." It says in a pleasantly modulated tone.

The party received a small kit emblazoned with the symbol of the Starfinder Society from Hope-01, and a lexicon analyzing program written by Kinpopo.

If you are inquiring about the Eternity Drive, it is still in the possession of Sarmak back at the Starfinder base camp.

If you are asking about other provisions, then you are an unknown amount of time too late with your request (or, perhaps, too early depending on what Starfinder Society 2e brings!).

Destiny of Sands | Q16 | Lost Maid of Anactoria | Year of Era's End

The First Ones are a near-mythical group of beings who are said to have come to the planet Aballon in the Pact Worlds system thousands of years before the Gap and created the precurser servitor robots that over time evolved to become the anacites.

By this point you can assume that First Seeker Sarmak would have told you, either "off screen" during the briefing or sometime thereafter via radio, that the all the Starfinder Society knows about the First Ones is based on what and who they left behind. The First Ones created the anacites, along with other artificial lifeforms. Yet, despite the obvious impact of their accomplishments, the Society knows next to nothing about them. Why did they leave? Sarmak finds that a very intriguing question!

Siliur previously recalled that Those Who Wait is a large sect of anacites who stockpile knowledge and resources in preparation for the return of the First Ones. They lurk around the city of Eternity and have a camp nearby where they ask off-worlders to venture into the city to find any information about their progenitors.

Siliur further recalled that the First Ones created different machines for different purposes. It was recently discovered that they created protocites, another species of artificial lifeform who dwell within the sun. While the protocites share some similarities with the anacites, they’re a completely different branch of artificial life, whose purpose is to conduct radical research.

Postulant-Call-07 remains most interested in your response to its inquiry.
