Astronomers have marveled as the famous comet Aucturn's Tear once more soars through the solar system, yet this cycle, strange portals have begun opening on each planet the comet passes, and a powerful entity trapped on the other side of these gateways desperately calls for help. To the Pathfinder Society, this is a once-in-a-human-lifetime opportunity to discover what lies through these portals—and either free the captive trapped within or ensure that it remains sealed forever.
Philippe Lam |
He wasn't expected to get called up, happy at his semi-retirement at the Grand Lodge on a modest but reliable salary to be a dedicated sparring-partner for fellow Pathfinders who would get on the adventure, so he was a bit surprised when he received an active assignment to the Spire of Nex, and with an interplanar trip to boot. Time to dust off his weapon, his full plate, his shield and all the remaining adventuring items he might need.
" Hello hello, Dan here ! I hope we can get that one with the least amount of fights possible, but if we need to, I certainly won't be the last to butt heads. I can mostly take care of myself, but I might need the occasional healing if I take an errant hit. "
He wears a holy symbol, but while he does not hide it, he prefers to not spell the name of his deity out loud. But he does not mind to show he's a divine caster if need be.

Sorina Westyr, the Society Master of Spells, addresses the assembly. “Pathfinders—welcome and well timed. Please, make your ways to the designated safe areas quickly and carefully, and please mind the wards. Try to keep the paths clear, as we have some very delicate equipment coming through. I have some amazing discoveries to share in just a few more moments.”
Table GMs, you may begin!
Ecthelien the Grey |
A scholarly elf joins the assembly and studies the others while trying to keep clear of the path of the instruments.
With a slight bow to the others.
”Greetings. I have been summoned to this place to provide assistance. I anticipate it will provide great empirical data . Reason enough to stray from my tomes in the great library. Ecthelien is my name in the common tongue. Arcane studies are my contribution to this team.““
Constantin. |
Next to arrive is a powerfully built Varisian gentleman. He wears simple clothes, has no obvious armour and carries a spear. His overall appearance is that of the sort of street thug you would find lurking down a dark alleyway in one of the seedier districts of Kaer Maga. As he arrives he extending a meaty hand in greeting...
"Hello, I'm Constantin. Nice to meet everyone."
Noting Ecthelien's comments he adds "Ah, a fellow student of the arcane arts, that is also an area I have some skill in.".

Starlight brightens the grassy plain surrounding the immense Spire of Nex. Overhead, a comet lazily streaks across the night sky. Heavily armed patrols guard the perimeter, and the shadow of great wings occasionally blots out the stars. Sharp flashes of amethyst light, quick shouts, and chanting briefly periodically rise above the waiting crowd’s chatter as spellcasters hurriedly construct and maintain crackling wards. These efforts revolve around a thirty-foot-tall upright gleaming metal ring constructed at the Spire’s base.

Each PC receives two pouches of air crystals, a potion of endure elements, and one snapleaf. You are also given a wand of cure moderate wounds (5 charges). A PC may purchase planetary adaptation (CL 11th) as a spellcasting service for 1 Prestige Point, with its duration beginning at the start of Part 2. You may also buy other supplies as usual before Part 2 begins.
Azura ~bluedove |
You've seen her before, surely. A strange sort of songbird, she was hard to miss. She was something of an assault on the senses, albeit a pleasant one for most. Her hair and dress always a palette of pastels, as if she wished to carry springtime with her always. She had long, diaphanous locks of bright blue that swam around her slender form as if stirred by a breeze unique to her. Her hair was plaited with ribbons and beads of many colors as well as tiny silver bells that jingled softly as she moved. Her gait flowed with the grace of a dancer, the hem of her Varisian dancing skirts fluttering showily in her wake.

Her eyes swirled with alternating shades of cobalt and cyan as she gazed skyward in amazement. "It's beautiful, isn't it? Everyone is talking about it, but very few know what to think. So many things are happening, strange gateways appearing and a disturbance on the Elemental Planes. I'm very interested to hear what Master Westyr has concluded."
Then she seems to realize she was being rude to not introduce herself first. "Apologies, my given name is Azura but I also go by the stage name of the bluedove. I am pleased to offer whatever help I can, please do not hesitate to ask."
Turning her face back to the sky, she continued to share her thoughts with the group. "Do you think it really is a comet? It doesn't behave much like one. First it was rotating, but now that has stopped. And it's producing atmosphere somehow rather than ice. Though I suppose it could be sublimating, but that would seem to indicate a source of heat... hmmm."
Hearing the others speak of arcane interests, she asks Ecthelien and Constantin, "Do you suppose they intend to harness the arcane properties of the Spire to help us bridge the distance?"
Azura will take advantage of the spellcasting service and pick up two additional air crystals and one snapleaf.
Daniel de Fehrn |
He doesn't think he will ever be able to call on any of his lore because all of it is academic, anything more in depth would be met with a puzzled face. What he could try to do is to try to pry as much information as possible from the gossiping around.
Diplomacy (Gather Information) : 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22
As for Dan's spellcasting choices, he too opts to take the Planar Adaptation. He also picks up his alloted consumables, but as for anything on top of it, he waits to know his teammates' choice on that matter.

"I think that would be a reasonable assumption. I am no expert on this place, but the given the nature of who created it I imagine it may well be a potent source of magical power that could be taped into to aid with such an endeavor."
As planetary adaptation gives energy resistance 20 vs one of the energy types prevalent on the world it is cast for, which energy types would be available as options for this casting?

These will be useful. The comet recently traveled past Akiton, and it should travel past Golarion within the next 24 hours.
He gladly accepts the two offered items.
Constantin. |
Constantin flags down one of the spellcasters offering planetary adaptation to get it cast on himself. He then checks that his equipment is all where it should be, ready for whatever the Master of Spells is planning to announce.
Although he won't do it quite yet, if it looks like things may get more dangerous he will be ready to use his wand to cast mage armor on himself (he will also typically use his wands of shield and enlarge person if it looks like any sort of combat is likely to be imminent).

Sorrina Westyr, the Pathfinder Society’s returning Master of Spells, hurriedly concludes conversations before stepping onto the platform in front of a giant metal ring the Society has constructed. The starlight glimmers in her crystalline white hair, though her obsidian oread features are visible only in flashes from the nearby glowing wards.
“I thank you all for traveling here on such short notice, Pathfinders. A unique opportunity has come to us from the stars. The asteroid Aucturn’s Tear quietly travels our solar system once every fifty-six years. For the first time it now flares with brilliance. We have learned this phenomenon is the work of an entity trapped on Aucturn’s Tear and, whatever this being is, it is calling out for help. We do not know its intentions, yet it is in our interest to learn more. If it is benevolent, it may prove a powerful ally and friend to the Society if we can free it. If it is malevolent, then we will do what we can to ensure it stays sealed away where it can do no harm.
“As it approaches planets, the entity has opened gateways in magic-dense regions, as if calling out to powerful champions that might come to its aid. Based on our calculations, the first of these gateways on Golarion should appear in a matter of minutes, and we have gathered in this magically infused site to draw the portal here and stabilize it, allowing us to travel to the asteroid ourselves. Our observations show billowing clouds pouring out from three locations on Aucturn’s Tear. These both create a livable environment we can navigate as well as provide three entrances to the asteroid’s interior so that we can find the source of these events. The first entrance is at the base of an enormous crater, where there are monumental fortifications—likely making that the most difficult approach. The second plume is coming from the remnants of a frozen fortress, which could contain incredible secrets in its own right. The third plume is coming from the sunward side of the comet and is issuing from a number of lava tubes. Our observers also spotted the wreck of a metal craft near there.
“This will be an unusual environment, so prepare for unusual conditions: extreme temperatures, low-gravity, and airless pockets are likely. Everyone should have received a package of supplies to assist in managing these hazards. While the gateway should remain stable, a contingent of conjurers is staying here to monitor it, and additional teams are on standby to provide escape routes to extradimensional shelters in case of complications. Perhaps most importantly, we’ve ringed this area with defenses to prevent any outside interference with this expedition, and the bronze dragon Ahelvetinn has agreed to keep watch in case any evil attempts to escape through the gateway into Golarion.”
The Spire of Nex begins to hum, the vibrations creating a stomach-churning resonance as a pinpoint of light appears in the center of the portal ring and begins to grow. Sorrina Westyr shouts to be heard over the deafening noise, “It’s beginning! Be ready to move through and split into teams to investigate each of the three possible approaches. Once we’re inside we can regroup and compare notes.”
The metal of the portal ring incandesces, and a blast of freezing air pours out as the gateway opens. The place beyond is a field of jagged grey stone, and once several dozen Pathfinders step through, the earth itself springs to life in the form of countless elemental creatures that swarm toward the gate. From further in, a terrible draconic roar accompanies the appearance of a flight of crystalline dragons sweeping out from the lip of a crater.
“Secure the gate! Do not let any of them through!” Westyr shouts as she sends a lance of swirling black and white energy into one of the wyrms, sending it careening end over end as the forces meet.
Table GMs, begin Part 2!
Ecthelien the Grey |
Ecthelien would cast mage armor like his ally at the approach.
This will be a educational experience and fraught with peril and power simultaneously. as he watches the portal hum to life
Constantin. |
"It certainly sounds like it will be an unique experience." replies the big Varisian.
Constantin will use his wand of mage armor as Sorrina is announcing the plan and will then use his wands of enlarge person and shield when it becomes apparent that the party are just about to step into a combat situation.

Daniel de Fehrn |
He would normally move as fast as possible towards the enemy but he reconsiders since seeing Constantin's approach. He wasn't expecting that reach, he feels a bit conflicted about it. On one hand, a gigantic reach helps a lot preventing the hits incoming, but on the other hand that goes slightly counter to what he was thinking given he only has arms' reach but frontloads everything behind avoiding as many hits as possible.
He moves up a bit, hampered by having a full plate. Luckily that doesn't prevent him to use his Spring-loaded wrist-sheath to use a Wand of Bless and then uses one of his Warpriest abilities to cast Divine Favor on himself as a swift action. Mechanically, the Bastard sword is still on his waist, but the full plate suit includes a gauntlet so he's considered armed for the purposes of threatening enemies
(Bless does not stack with Inspire Courage so only take the latter as the bigger bonus, it's more to cover in the case the song stops)
Constantin. |
"Don't worry about getting between me and those things." notes Constantin "I've got enough reach to hit them over your head so long as you are not too far forward."
Being a wizard Constantin doesn't have the greatest defenses at this level so isn't really a professional front liner and with his reach reach tactics still work even if there is someone stood in front of him so long as they are not too far forward.
If it looks like Constantin will be in the front and that the enemy has a clear charge lane, would it be ok if he changes his readied action to a brace against a charge (i.e. the readied attack will go off in the event that he is charged and will do double damage)?
Mustaparta |
The earth elemental is destroyed immediately by Constantin's critically wounding strike through its rocky head. Changing to brace against a charge would have been ok
Ecthelien and Azura can act
Ecthelien the Grey |
It may not have mattered, but elementals normally cannot be critted.
Ecthelien calls out. The other appears to be blinded, but that may not last.
He moves forward and draws his bow.

Sorry, got too excited. The elemental is still there, but not for long.
The elemental was struck twice by Constantin viciously damaging it, but still managed to get close.
Azura's turn
Azura ~bluedove |
Azura continues dancing, tapping herself with the wand of shield and moving forward in graceful leaps. "Use magic if you can against the Mephit, and spread out, it has a breath weapon." She advises.
Maintaining Inspire Courage, 2nd round. Can I tuck the wand away as part of my move? Some GM's allow, some only allow weapons to be drawn/sheathed this way.
Mustaparta |
I think you can
The mephit decides to wait until you come closer and stays in its hiding spot.
Constantin and Daniel can act
Daniel de Fehrn |
The elemental gets close enough for him to get a pop at him. He walks towards the creature while he grips his weapon. He could try with the gauntlet, but he has low expectations for the integrated weapon, in his mindset, go big, or don't even try, one swipe.
Attack with the bastard sword : 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14

Azura continues her inspiring dance and speaks to the Elemental in Terran, trying to get information from the creature.
Then she moves forward again in agile bounds, drawing her bow.

Ecthelien the Grey |
Echthelien watches as the warriors gang up on the elemental, confident the pair will finish the brute.
The flying, breathing elemental is next on the order of business.
Rather than trusting his bow, he advances well clear of the elemental and calls forth a pair of missiles to dart from his hand.

"Nicely done." say Constantin with a nod towards Dan. He then stomps off towards the mephit, hoping to take advantage of its current visually impaired state...

From here you could venture to three locations. The crater is the direct route to the heart of the Asteroid and also most dangerous as its visibly swarming with defenders. Second is Frozen city on the asteroid’s dark side (exploration with some combat). Third is Sea of Light (exploration and combat, environmental hazards).
When two people agree on destination, we can proceed.
Azura ~bluedove |
Reflex save vs Mephit BW: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Azura turns out her buckler to protect her from the worst of the Earth Mephit's attack. After the creature is defeated, she ceases her performance and considers the way ahead.
"With the protective spell we received, we are well equipped to endure the cold. Shall we approach the Frozen City? We may find denizens to speak with about this place there." She suggests.
To Daniel, she asks, "Do you have a means of healing yourself? If not, I can use my wand."
Constantin. |
Constantin pulls out a rag and cleans the mephit gore from his spear.
"I think you may be right about looking to take the diplomatic approach, especially as we are smaller in number than some of the other groups of Pathfinders." he notes.
"Thinking about the protective spell we received, if I understand it correctly I believe it should protect us from any environmental hazards we encounter here, which sounds like it would help with the Frozen City but should also hopefully help elsewhere on the asteroid as well."
(One nice thing about Planetary Adaptation is that it give immunity to the harmful environmental effects of a particular world, which should definitely help with any unpleasant environmental stuff we might come up against here)
Daniel de Fehrn |
Dan nods at Azura in an affirmative way.
" Oh sure I have my own wand, don't worry about it. Would be very crass if I didn't anyway. "
He takes out his wand from his backpack and estimates he might tap two times.
Wand of Cure Light Wounds : 2d8 + 2 ⇒ (4, 3) + 2 = 9
He then uses a third charge and then good to go. Dan is back to full
Whether he prefers to defeat as many enemies as possible in his more abstract pursuit of vengeance doesn't really matter. He's also mindful of his healing resources.
" Not my personal cup of tea but if you think there's better results trying to negotiate, I'm good to go with it. "
He then stops hiding his holy symbol under the full plate, revealing he worships Ragathiel. He then explicits that he doesn't have any specific equipment to help negotiate so thathe would have to rely only on his talking skills and that makes him uncomfortable.
Ecthelien the Grey |
Ecthelien appreciates the logical discourses and prepares to follow the group.
”I have arcane means to address cold creatures. Diplomacy is not my forte but if that suites any of you, I am not opposed to trying that route. “

A vast forest of lifeless trees blankets this landscape. A thin layer of ice coats each branch, tracing dappled shadows in the starlight. A dark, half-fallen spire rises in the distance, while running water splashes nearby alongside the sound of vicious combat. Starlight provides only dim illumination in this area and temperature is severely cold. The trees resemble conifers, but are of a species completely unknown on Golarion. I think Constantin's turn got missed out as I wanted to know the outcome of my question and the knowledge check before he posted his actions. Hopefully is ok if I post what his actions would have been now and that they would have taken place on Constantin's initiative before the vampiric mist moved? Constantin would have used the round before combat to cast enlarge person on himself using his wand.
"We need to kill that thing as quickly as we can." says Constantin indicating towards the vampiric mist "The damage it can do is particularly deadly, although it is vulnerable to fire."
He then prepares to strike at the mist as soon as it comes into range (readied action, which would have then triggered as the mist moved in)...
