The War of the Lance

Game Master EltonJ

This campaign is a DRAGONLANCE campaign, going from DL1 to DL12. I will be using the 15th Anniversary version, though. Since it collects the material in the adventures.

"This is more like it. Killin' goblins." Torgar says turning his head to the right and left so that the vertebrae crack. Then limbering his shoulders he steps toward the door with his large sword in both hands.

Our first priority should be to get the staff safely out of here. If the Lady of the Plains says she needs to get the staff to Xax Tsaroth, we need to help her. Let's go out through the kitchen. the half elf states as she beings to leave. The kitchen is this way she says pointing in the direction, to let Goldmoom and Riverwind know where to go.

Toadie! Warty stinky toadie! Squish Toadie! Augier seems to be riling himself up.

Male Human (Estwilde) Ranger (Guide) 5

Orlin curses and unslings the bow from his back, ushering Goldmoon and Riverwind towards the back of the tavern. "Damn fightin' men! Curse th' lot for a bag 'a fools!" He glances towards the back rooms, nodding to the two Que-Shu tribesmen as they follow him. "If we can get to th' ground, I can blend into th' woods, help you do th' same. We'll be halfway to th' old ruins before they know what's goin' on."

The goblins do their best to force the door.

Kadmos grins and shakes his head at the Goblins attempt to open the door. He walks over and leans against the door, adding his bulk to keeping the door shut, and he begins whistling some nameless tune.

Male Human Psion 10/Atlanteologist 10

"There is an open back door behind the kitchen," Otik offers.

The half elf will thank Otik Sandeth for permission to go out through the kitchen and then leaves with the Plainsmen.

Grrr.. Don't talk to gobs! Just smash em!

Male Human (Estwilde) Ranger (Guide) 5

The massive ranger follows Mariel and the two Plainsmen, an arrow nocked to the string of his bow as his eyes sweep the forest for enemies. "Right, step close - once th' others get here, we can scarper."

Orlin has the Terrain Bond ability, which allows him and his allies to avoid leaving a trail when traveling in a favored terrain, which for him is forests.

Male Human Psion 10/Atlanteologist 10

The goblins try to bust down the door again. Hold Portal is still in effect.

If the door is closed, not opening, and the dwarf is bellowing at the folks on the other side, Kadmos will grin at the dwarf, Torgar he thought he'd heard. Then he'll stop leaning on the door, and knock as loud and hard as he can ... after the thrid knock he'll bellow out, Can we come out now, you guys are keeping us in here for no reason.

Barb5 HP56/56 F6R4W3 AC19T13FF16 Per+7

Bark! Bark! Bark!

Male Human Wizard (3), Wizard of High Sorcery (2)

Reuben sees that the hobgoblins stand little chance of breaching the doors, and loudly calls out,

"Ah, hobgoblins, your persistence is truly admirable. But let me enlighten you: this door – it’s not merely a door. It’s a metaphysical conundrum wrapped in an enigma, secured with a dash of eldritch glue. You see, it’s not about wood and hinges; it’s about the very fabric of reality. So, by all means, keep pounding. Perhaps you’ll unravel the secrets of existence. Or maybe you’ll just sprain your wrist. Either way, it’s entertainment for me.”

He barks out another laugh and begins slowly edging backwards toward the kitchen exit.

"I'd be more than happy to smash them or at least split them in half, if they would come through the door. Since it doesn't look like they are going to do that anytime soon, shall we?" Torgar says to the Aggghhh and the others, gesturing to follow the others out the kitchen.

You do, the others want to smash the goblins.

”Come on Aggghhh, let’s catch up to the others in case there is an ambush. I feel we’ll have plenty of chances to smash goblins.” Torgar says and starts heading that direction.

Male Minotaur Monk 5th level...43/43 HP...AC17/T13/FF15 ... Acid/Electrical Resist 5...

Kadmos smiles at Torgar, "Yes, let's go make sure the others haven't gotten themselves in trouble."

Barb5 HP56/56 F6R4W3 AC19T13FF16 Per+7

Auger grumps but follows the other dwarf.

Male Human Wizard (3), Wizard of High Sorcery (2)

Reuben holds up the Hold Portal spell for as long as possible, then follows the others through the back exit door.

Male Human Psion 10/Atlanteologist 10

Outside, you see the way to go down, a spiraling staircase used by Tika and Otik. The goblins hasn't figured out that you went this way, so they aren't waiting for you. However, it will take some time to get down by way of the stairwell. At least there is a guardrail you can hold on to to get down.

Male Human Wizard (3), Wizard of High Sorcery (2)

Making sure that the others are through and have escaped first, Reuben backs through the door and drops the Hold Portal spell. Turning and seeing the spiral staircase, however, Reuben realizes that it would take time he does not have to spare to descend by mundane means. He mutters a curse and holds his orb up high above his head with one hand, letting it emit another blinding glow of white light,

"Angkat aku, hembusan angin!"

Upon muttering this, he steps up onto the guardrail and steps off the platform, seeming to glide down through the air to the ground below.
Upon reaching the ground, he immediately takes off after Orlin and the others, only stopping for a moment to utter another incantation after he is sure that the others are off the staircase,

"Jaring sihir, tangkap yang lewat!"

Upon the last syllable, he spreads his hand towards the ground behind them, and a glowing white sticky mass springs from his hand and anchors in the ground, seeping and writhing like a speared leviathan as it expands, its sticky tendrils growing and seething into a mass of slimy rope-like material.
Grunting with satisfaction for his handiwork, he follows the others, hoping that his spell will slow down any pursuit that may ensue.

Reuben is going to cast levitate, and float downwards at around 20 ft. per round, much faster than descending by way of the spiral staircase.
As soon as he reaches the bottom and has an action to spare, he is going to cast web behind him, where the hobgoblins might follow if they choose to follow the party.
It will cover a 20 ft. radius circle (40 ft. diameter I believe), and Reuben will place it so that it covers most of the path behind him and some of the spiral staircase if the hobgoblins try to follow them from that way.

Torgar hustles to catch up with the others on the stair. He stops to wait for Reuben but then sees the mage go over the rail. Seeing the mage is well tended to, Torgar then barrels down the steps to the bottom and keeps pace with the others.

"We just exiting town? Anyone need to grab a horse?" Torgar asks.

Orlin looks up, grinning, as Reuben slowly levitates down to the ground. "'Ey, skully! Yer th' last one - let's scarper already!" At Torgar's suggestion of horses, Orlin shakes his head vehemently. "No horses - I can move without disturbin' th' forest, help you lot as well, but it's better to go on foot. They'll never find us this way."

Barb5 HP56/56 F6R4W3 AC19T13FF16 Per+7

Augier heads down the stairs, being very familiar with them as he had gone down them to take out the trash quite often.

Male Human Psion 10/Atlanteologist 10

You hear the goblins moving down the stairs. Someone must have told them that you are moving.

We need to get out of here. The goblins will be looking for us. Perhaps we should leave the town for a bit. Perhaps head to Haven and report this to Elistan? she recommends.

Barb5 HP56/56 F6R4W3 AC19T13FF16 Per+7

We hide in woods! I know how to hunt for food and we can live off land.

Male Human Wizard (3), Wizard of High Sorcery (2)

Reuben agrees with Mariel,

"I also believe that we should visit Haven, but I think we should pick up supplies while we're there as well. We have not the provisions for an extended journey to Xak Tsaroth. I would also like to stop by the mageware shop and pick up a scroll or two."

He nudges Orlin jokingly,

"And I've heard that Lemuel, the owner of the Haven Mageware Shop, brews quite a fine tea, and perhaps an even finer ale! But if he doesn't, I'll be sure to make it up to you and the rest with the promise of a round at the High Hand Tavern!"

At the goblins' cry, Orlin's head snaps around to face the front of the inn, and the towering mountain man begins to move into the undergrowth, motioning for the others to follow. "Softly now, and we might miss 'em. Best to head for Haven, like the others are sayin' - for the past year, I've sold my wares to a fur trader in the Grand Market, and young Azlik might help us hide if we pay 'im enough." He glares at Goldmoon. "B'sides, someone started talking about Xak Tsaroth in broad daylight - they won't expect us t' double back t' Haven for supplies. On top 'a that, that fat fool Hederick's prob'ly in league with 'em, from how it sounded - the Seekers won't know what to do if we walk into their fortress."

Stealth (ACP, Favored Terrain): 1d20 + 11 - 3 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 11 - 3 + 2 = 17

Using Guide ability to give the rest of the party a +2 to Perception, Stealth, initiative checks, as well as the ability to move without leaving tracks.

Since he doesn't know this area as well as the others, Kadmos stays quiet and in the back of the party. When the topic of "Mounts" comes up, he sighs, thinking about how large of a horse he'd need

Dwarf Barbarian Invulnerable Rager 5 | HP 61/61 | AC21 T13 FF19 | F+8 R+5 W+4 | CMD20 | Init+3 Percep+7 | Rage 15 rds | Current effects:

Torgar follows Orlin trying to stay as quiet as he can. Which is not much. He's more used to standing and fighting that sneaking but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Stealth: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Reuben tries to sneak along with the party, but his robe catches on some brambles and he starts a loud curse before stopping himself and trying to move quieter.

Male Human Wizard (3), Wizard of High Sorcery (2)

Sorry, that would be a 7 because of Orlin's generous help, but it's still abysmal. Reuben’s about as stealthy as a kobold with a machine gun.

Barb5 HP56/56 F6R4W3 AC19T13FF16 Per+7

Stealth: 1d20 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 3 + 4 = 26

Big clumsy humans are gunna get them caught.

Kadmos looks at himself, shakes his head again, and "tries" to move quietly

A silence spell might help in being sneaky. :)

Okay, as for everyone else -- it looks like you're sneaky enough. The goblins however, detect Reuben's moving through the brush and are checking that out.

Goblin tracker's perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 against Reuben's stealth, which is 7.

We must be wary about killing these goblins. If Toede is in charge of the town the consequences could be dangerous for us. she whispers as she continues moving on.
