A traditional journey to Absalom Station begins on the arrival of Docking Bay 94...

Well that’s the thing though, the manifestation is part of the concept and depends on other elements of it. I saw up above that someone else is going Electrical Attunement, so I’ll probably shy away from that, but if I was going that direction I might want to play a Sylph, Android, SRO, or some other race with a tie to electricity, whereas if I were leaning into the photon side I might want to play an Ifrit from the Burning Archipelago. The details of race and background will depend in part on the mechanics. And I don’t want to build anything too close to the concepts already on play, no reason to duplicate them.

The two manifestations that have not been chosen thus far are Solar Weapon and Solar Shield.

The place where everyone is coming from for the start of this is the school listed in the first post and expanded on a few posts down in this thread and has been compiled in the Campaign Info.

I am jotting down notes...

His Backstory is forming as I am researching. He will be the Rogue.

I am also heavily considering this Archetype but not too crazy about the Operative BaB...

Upon further consideration it's not so bad .. lol!

Possible Second Alternative Class Feature
Stellar Sage

He is going Lunar Manifestation. The Post after this one has his Fluff.

Ok, I think I've got the outline of what I want. Elebrian with the Solar Weapon manifestation. He was...almost as much kicked off of Eox as invited to this school, as he's a devout Pharasmin and hates that his homeworld is run by undead abominations. Long term he'd love to start a Pharasmin Hellknight order (and will likely take the Star Knight archetype) that's devoted to ensuring that the cycle of life and death is followed, and not perverted by undeath. He'll probably be photon attuned much more than graviton, maybe enough to take the Broken Cycle alternate feature. Maybe. Not sure of a theme yet. Basically a traditional frontline, melee combatant type build.

Thoughts?

I think there's a lot there, including a rich racial heritage which would dovetail nicely with Zephyr's elf heritage, along with the photon focus which would be cool. The anti-undeath Pharasma focus is amazing btw.

I have to agree! Totally loving the Hellknight angle!

So, say instead of 10, Lucky 13?

I'm working out the crunch for my Brennari Solarian, now that we have the stat determination method.

Note: I'm currently set to take the Electrical Attunement Mode alternate class feature, but if lots of other people are doing that also, I can go with the normal stellar mode, so we have a good balance.

NOt sure we are at the "lots" stage quite yet, pretty sure this is:

"and then there were four ..."

I actually think it's a good idea to have two of each Attunements.

Good for now, so unless we get one more in a week, let's move it to the Discussion.

This is my draft of my solarian. He is not a power fighter type since I plan to cultivate him as a healer type as he levels up, using the Divine Champion archetype. I gave him the armor manifestation to make it easier to keep him alive.

What do you guys think about the Star Knight archetype? tHere's some decent stuff in there, but man is that a lot of Stellar Revelations to give up. Seems like it might be better to have him notionally look well upon the Hellknights and all, but not walk that path himself. But I've got until Level 2 to decide, I guess.

Likewise Extra Manifestation. Seems like it'd be cool to wield stellar sword and shield, for example, but is it worth giving up a zenith revelation? I've got until 9th to decide on that one, though. No rush.

I actually was considering both of those Archetypes. I thought it a strong, flavorful build.

How many Revelations does one really need really...lol.

I really like the image of a Space Hellknight.

I really think that our 4 concepts are really solid for this type of mission.

EDIT

I just realized that I just used all my allotments for "really" in those statements....really!

Hello! Disregard if you are all full. I've never played Starfinder and would likely need help with the learning curve. But I liked the opener and the references being made so I thought I might make an attempt at a concept.

Blue stars burn hot, bright and fast. That's the problem, you see. They burn themselves out or supernova all too soon. When they first manifested, the news was bittersweet. Living into retirement was unlikely. So they embraced their fate and sought to do as much as they could while they were around to do it. To make a name for themselves and make their family proud.

Unfortunately, I'm not very familiar with the setting to put in much detail. I don't even know what Alien/Race to pick. There are so many! The Worlanisi seemed interesting, but I saw the shield manifestation wasn't yet utilized but I'm not sure a small character lends itself well to tanking.

Is anyone going for piloting? That was an impulse to include in the concept, but wasn't sure if that role was already filled.

Anyway, would appreciate input toward choices that would synergize well with the concept or are just good for the build. I have built a pretty effective bodyguarding cavalier for PF1e before so I'm not completely hopeless. XD

I don't happen to believe in hopeless, and certainly not in gaming. In gaming, if there's no hope, you're doing it wrong. tbh, I think as long as you can read and get to Archives of Nethys, you can do fine.

You are absolutely right, no one has mentioned piloting at all, and that's pretty cool. So is the idea of bodyguarding.

I chose a Legacy Race for Zephyrr because that is part of the history I want to explore; and it would seem you are already familiar with those races from PF1. For me, I usually look at what else there is that I want for my character, and then find out how to add it. With Zephyrr, it is psychic stuff, so I picked the ESPer theme and might even take the Phrenic Adept Archeype.

If you have a couple dollars to spend, I highly recommend StarBuilder for your phone, just becasue it makes builds so easy. Let us know how else we can help :)

I will always do my best to welcome newer players, because gatekeeping is never a viable choice. So welcome to the game, and with your idea, we're full.

Hop on over to Discussion, and we can get it all ironed out.

I am bumping this thread back up to be top as we have had a couple players drop so there is at least one spot available, if not two.

There is room for a Core Solarian, and a Solar Shield Solarian. The group has just gotten some time to look around Absalom Station, having found evidence for the violence that was witnessed when they arrived, and are justifiably decompressing.

Likewise, you are new to the station, or at least new enough that any affiliations that you might have here are tentative. You could be a prior arrival from another school in the Dhacian Rota, have just completed your training with the Starfinders and sent here to see what "Home Away From Home" looks like.

Hmmm, I should think about this...

I'd say "we have cookies", but they've likely been eaten already.

I'm playing with the idea of an SRO, so cookies wouldn't be an attraction anyway.

(I considered joking about a kitsune, but decided against it.)

I could see a robotic museum fox that has been there since the it opened, some generations back... Connected to the InfoSphere, so visitors could prompt certain behaviors as illustration (based on digitized data, collated/compiled from numerous sources). Over time, funding decreases, maintenance becomes irregular, and somewhere in that span, the jumble of code gets a pet program written into it— the product of a fire sale, a slightly unskilled program installation, and bloatware from daisy-chaining the system for other uses as a spark fires, programs cross, and the Astronomy program provides Celestial guidance as a mind comes into being, lit by the span of suns, maps of esoteric solar lines, and gravitational wave topography that give a glimpse of truth to a system that found a window and turned it into a door...

I love the possibilities, but that's me rambling.

Me'mori wrote:

Dirk certainly would share (if anyone asked)....

Dirk really does like cookies ... all finger foods really ... well, food.
I'm not sure Dirk has ever turned down food.

I mean, that's certainly a fun idea, kinda tempting, but I was playing around with a different idea. XD

What's the party missing skill-wise? Any critical starship positions missing?

Hmmmm... looks like piloting might be missing? I think I have an idea coming together, but it's late and I should go to bed. XD

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm still very new to SF. May I dot in?

What character are you thinking of, Seth?

Almonihah, Piloting is... Maybe useful, but don't reach for it if your concept doesn't have it. No need to shoehorn in a skill that may not get used as much, depending on how everyone plays it. Conversely, the position could be taken that a vehicle would get angled for at every opportunity that seems reasonable.

That does remind me to review narrative Starship combat... Unless everyone is quick and coherent in the Discord channel, standard starship combat would possibly kill this game in this format.

So atm, I looked at a bunch of art, and came across the Novians.

A Novian Solarian. His ability. Solar flare. Though I'm not sure what Core solarian is. But I could also go shield Solarian. As stated being missing

His desire? To go nova like the star that birthed him

Apologies. "Core" Solarian, at least in this case, means the manifestation is a Solar Weapon for the level 1 feature, vs the alternate manifestations of Lunar/Flare/Armor/Shield. Alternate Class Features, and Archetypes are certainly allowed.

At present, of the characters we have, the Solar Weapon and Solar Shield are not represented, and I would not mind having those niches filled.

To help facilitate context, at this point, the PCs are ~six days on Absalom Station, with their arrival marked by the death of a Starfinder that was set to meet them on their arrival. In that span of time, they have interacted with the Starfinders, two gangs on a couple different levels of the station, and have garnered the notice of the Eoxian Embassy. If your character is into social media, there have been a few teasing announcements of a new face or voice for some of your possibly favorite brands.

Primarily, the question is "Who is your character that would be notable (or new and reputable) or connected enough to be included to arbitrate in a corporate deadlock that is going on two weeks?
- - -

In regards to the race option, I am very hesitant to consider a Novian for several reasons. Foremost is this portion of their race entry:

SRD.Novian.SocietyandAlignment wrote:

"...They don’t consider themselves in need of improvement, and while they do learn from their experiences, emotional growth is slow coming. Novians have little interest in faith, though they consider stellar deities such as Sarenrae and Desna their peers.

Novians live among other societies and people, but rarely try to fit in..."

While I am not saying it is not plausible, I understand that the initial choice was promoted by the art, and my initial interpretations of the race and stated goal seem a little spotlight dependent.

Admittedly, depending on player motive, I am going to try to bend the rails as much as I can in this AP, as it is absolutely a pressured linear adventure.

Since you're new to Starfinder, but not new to the game— as indicated by your posts– give Chapter 2 a quick once-over, as there may be some minor differences in building the framing for your character that can make a bit of a difference.

As always, everyone else feel free to offer insight I may have overlooked, as I was trying not to chase tangents and fall down rabbit holes.

Okay, lets go with this question then:

What are the current races/species in the party?

All right, so, I should say more about my concept.

A few decades after the Gap, a brilliant gnomish engineer decided to create a tribute to lost Golarion, a 'zoo' of robotic animals built to look like the native life of the lost planet. It was popular for a time, but as often happens with genius inventors, the gnome grew bored with his project, and with his waning interest the 'zoo' also began to lose its popularity. With time and wear the robotic animals broke down, sometimes repaired by their creator and sometimes canabalized for parts depending on the engineer's whims.

The gnome had a friend, an elf that was a devout follower of Sarenrae and a Starfinder. When the gnome at last started talking about permanently closing his 'zoo', she asked him if she could have her favorite of his robot animals--the fox, designiation 15-0-10. The engineer agreed, and the elf took the robot with her on her journeys of exploration for the next several years.

But life as a Starfinder is dangerous, and one of those dangers eventually claimed the elf's life. In her will she left 15-0-10 to her closest friend, a fellow human Starfinder and follower of Sarenrae, but said friend quickly found the old robot reminded her too much of the dead, and so she donated the robot to the Holy Angel of Flame cathedral on Abasalom Station. Not having much use for a rickety old fox-shaped robot, 15-0-10 ended up deactivated and left in a box, occasionally shuffled around over the years but largely forgotten.

It was almost thrown away in the big shuffle in the church of Sarenrae after the discovery of the Burning Archipelago and the subsequent move to make the Radiant Cathedral the center of Sarenrae's worship, but one priest took a liking to the old thing and decided to save it. He kept saying he'd get around to fixing up and reactivating the thing--mostly every time he moved its box around after getting caught up in other things again--but he never did before he died.

Only after this would 15-0-10 finally find new life, for next it passed to a young ysoki mechanic who had been an apprentice of sorts to the priest in his old age. This mechanic repaired and replaced many of 15-0-10's rusted, worn-out, outdated parts, finally reactivating it and using it as something of a workshop assistant and testbed for ideas she had. By now the old robot scarcely resembled its original form any more--all of its false fur had long since fallen out or been removed to access areas that needed repair, its ears, camera 'eyes', and limbs were mismatched, and even its casing was clearly made of several different materials of various ages. Its tail, once big and bushy, retained only a few stubborn patches of bleached false fur, and now ended in a trio of small manipulator tentacles, one with its own camera for detail work.

The ysoki died in 307 AG, and her will turned 15-0-10 back over to the Holy Angel of Flame cathedral in memory of her old mentor. Not wanting to just throw the robot back in a box, a technically inclined android acolyte tweaked 15-0-10's programming and used it to clean back rooms in the cathedral. They even installed some small solar panels along its flanks, more in devotion to Sarenrae than for the tiny savings in recharge time they provided.

It was a few years after this latest change of ownership that 15-0-10 found itself thinking. Somehow, after its long 'life', the old robot had finally attracted a soul. Not quite sure what to make of its sudden sapience, 15-0-10 kept up its appearances as a quirky old cleaning robot, but it soon found curiosity growing in its newborn mind. When unobserved, it took to exploring less-used corners of the big cathedral, and soon its surroundings. Its exploratory trips grew longer with time, leaving the few Sarenites who paid much attention to the old robot wondering where it vanished to at times.

Eventually it found a disused little workshop, and started playing around with modifying itself during its expeditions. This was what finally clued in its supposed owner as to what was going on--showing up back in the Holy Angel of Flame with a second manipulator 'tail' was quite obvious, and when questioned the robot's new sapience rapidly made itself clear.

What no one, even 15-0-10, anticipated was it suddenly displaying solarion abilities during the subsequent testing of its capabilities. Some of the Sarenites discussed this as a sign that 15-0-10's sapience was a miracle from their goddess, but 15-0-10 reported feeling no special connection to Sarenrae. Just in case, though, it *did* paint a couple Sarenite symbols on its casing. It requested and was granted a time of training and education as it learned to deal with its new sapience and tried to decide what to do with itself.

Now done with its basic training, 15-0-10 has felt drawn towards the Starfinders, perhaps it's because of its old memories of its second owner, or perhaps it's simply because it doesn't want to be stuck dusting rooms on Absalom Station. Whatever the case, with a bit of starting gear given to it as a sort of 'graduation present' from those Sarenites who came to view it as a friend instead of a curiosity, it's set out to join the Starfinder Society and find its place in the wider galaxy.

******************

...so why do I like this idea so much I would write so much backstory? XD

* I always enjoy playing a small creature making its way in a world built for human-type beings. While 15-0-10 is a Small-sized SRO, and thus something like ysoki-sized, its quadrupedal stance makes it feel even smaller.
* I like very non-humanoid characters.
* I like the combination of very old and very young--it has memories from almost three centuries ago, but it's only been sapient for a handful of years, leaving it with this strange sense of being both ancient and a child.
* I like playing with augmentations, and an SRO that likes modding itself is perfect for that.

I'm thinking this will be a fairly unusual Solarian build--Solar shield manifestation with high dex, moderate int, and a bit of cha so it's not *completely* crippled when it comes to resolve. It will take advantage of attacking with the shield counting as an unarmed attack, which is an operative weapon and therefore can use dex to hit instead of strength, but it'll still be more defensively than offensively focused. Picture it as weaving in and out of the enemy, trying to draw fire and providing flanking and otherwise supporting the rest of the party in making their attacks more effective rather than doing a whole ton of damage itself. Good dex means I could get piloting, and I'm thinking engineering as well for modding itself.

...that's probably more than enough right now. XD Maybe I should just go ahead and build the thing instead of talking about it...

@Almonihah aways enjoy your creative concepts! Pilot certainly would be a good addition to our team.

I forgot that I can access that, it's been a while. I'll clean it up after this round of recruitment resolves.

It feels like you're getting stuck on being worried about the race before the character. Don't ask me what they are, tell me who they are.

Take a look at the character submissions for all the current players on the previous page-- Almonihah went above and beyond, don't aim for that unless you get inspired-- read some of the gameplay, see if any inspiration comes. When it does, post it in that format, so I'll know who they are, and how they can fit in with the party.

ill do so

I'll be naming the character Ix.

Ix seems a bit out of sorts, often staring into nothingness. As if looking at something that isn't really there. Maybe even striking up a conversation with said 'nothing'

But he is a good listener. Good and friendly manners. Some may think he's reserved, but he is rather thinking on what to say that would fit the conversation. Not wanting to seem rude

He likes different foods of different races. Though his own cooking skill is much to be desired. Easiest way to draw him into a conversation is to discuss food

In which case, we will probably need to draw him OUT of conversation with Dirk, because interestingly enough, food is one of the great ways to get the Corporate Captivator to be quiet.

bwhahahaha

My apologies for the delay in responding. At present, I do not feel comfortable giving the green light to your submission. While what you have offered is an alright basis to start from, there has been no mention of a Race or Theme as quoted in my prior post from an earlier request.

I am closing the Recruitment for now.
