I'm good. Well, more specifically, I am happy to roleplay anything, and Cailyn has probably interacted with everyone but Lita by this point so there are plenty of possibilities, I just don't have anything specific in mind.

Scrapeknee |

Re: Bonus stacking - I wouldn't worry too much about it. I try to stick to the rules, but I'm not a huge stickler for them, if that makes sense. I'd rather tell a fun story.
@Everyone: I know Dare suggested playing out something with Conrad, is there anyone else that would like to do something like that before we officially start?
I'm not against it, but would you want it in actual gameplay thread or here in discussion?

DM-Salsa |

Yup, Gameplay makes a lot more sense to me than here in the discussion thread.
Also a heads up for everyone, I'll be out of town next Friday for work. I likely won't have time to post most of the day.

Cailyn Vanderale |

@Salsa, do you have a preference on our stat line for our characters?

Aleda Helene Kath |

I do, actually, thanks for bringing it up. Here's the way I normally handle it.
Race: HP: X/X | AC: Full/Touch/Flatfooted (Shield AC: Full/Touch/Flatfooted)| Resistances & DR | F +0, R +0, W +0 (Conditional Modifiers)| Per: +0 (Senses, Darkvision, Low-light Vision, Etc.), Init: +0 |
Class: (Spell slots) | (Consumables) | (Ammunition) | Hero Points: 0 | Status:
Gender: Gender Race Class Level |
This is a higher level and more complicated one, but I think it gets the point across.
If you're running a prepared caster, like a wizard or a cleric, add a spells prepared spoiler to your character's profile to keep track of your spells. If you're like an arcanist that prepares spells and has spell slots, then you'll need both the prepared spells spoiler and the spell slots in the stat line.

Dare Ashborn |

Class: (Spell slots) | (Consumables) | (Ammunition) | Hero Points: 0 | Status:
Are we using hero points? If so, do we start with any?

DM-Salsa |

GM Salsa wrote:Are we using hero points? If so, do we start with any?

Yep, y'all start with 1.

DM-Salsa |

Just to clarify something, Status is for when you are prone, charging, fighting defensively, confused, etc. I realized that I probably should try doing a better job explaining that.

DM-Salsa |

So apologies to everyone. I'm not going to be starting tomorrow. I need to focus on some stuff for work, so I hope you'll forgive me for pushing the official start back a week. After that, hopefully things will calm a bit and I can get this rolling. Call it bad timing on my part for trying to start a game at the same time things are ramping up for a conference in May/June.

Cailyn Vanderale |

I understand as well, sir. Remember keeping some to turn into warm pudding without thought is a good thing (running a pbp is not without thought though). Round about way of saying don't work yourself into burnout but delaying is completely okay.

![]() |

Thanks for letting us know, GM, we can keep each other entertained while waiting for things to calm down :)
Willie, Lita, don't hesitate to jump in the role-playing going on! (a tiefling and a nob walk into a bar..,)

Conrad, I was also thinking of moving us to the Rusty Dragon (Dare might mention it in a future post) if that makes it easier for us to meet some more folks.

Dare Ashborn |

Slightly edited Dare's Heroforge mini which broke the link, so here's the new one.

Cailyn Vanderale |

Not sure how much we are supposed to know about standpoint associations with the runelords. Cailyn has studied it enough she speaks Thassilonian and has a +11 in history and local, so I don't doubt she knows where their empire was, which is why she was nodding.

DM-Salsa |

She would know that Thassilon covered much of Varisia and even up into the Lands of the Linnorm Kings. Sandpoint's Old Light is the ruin of a lighthouse from that era. She'd also know the Lady's Light, the Irespan, and the Grand Mastaba in Korvosa are also from around then as well and likely Thassilonian ruins. She knows that Thassilon was ruled by Seven Runelords and fell at the same time Azlant did when Earthfall happened and heralded the Age of Darkness.
Given that Cailyn is an occultist, I will say that there have been times where she's felt uneasy around some Thassilonian artefacts and ruins when she's gotten close enough to them to really study them. It's nothing specific, just a general feeling of not quite discomfort if you look at them too long. The kind you get when the tension in a murder mystery or a thriller begins to ratchet up.
@Everyone: Sorry for not posting yesterday. I thought I did but it apparently got eaten. I'll work on getting a post up today.
It's still a few days until the Swallowtail Festival when this scene at the Dragon is happening. Things seem to be going well, so I'll let this go on as long as everyone seems interested and enjoying themselves.
It looks like we're going to have some great interactions with this group. I'm looking forward to seeing all of this develops.

Just a heads up, I'm planning on moving on to the day of the Swallowtail Festival tonight or tomorrow. I'm thinking that I'll get a post from each of you what you're doing during the day and then we'll move onto the main event.

DM-Salsa |

Hey folks, I posted this in the discord, I'm not going to get that post up tonight and I'm not going to get a chance to get it up before Wednesday. Apologies.

So I thought there might be a chance that I got that post up tonight, but it's looking less likely than when I posted that in discord. However, I have gotten the thing done that I needed to. We now have a map! I've added everyone's token to it, so if you'd be so kind as to place your tokens where you'd think you be when the consecration starts, I'd appreciate it. Cathedral is to the north. The stage is where the dignitaries are going to be.
Also, I've added the loot sheet for this game up in the description. I need to double check it to make sure I remembered to set up everything (Bad habit of getting distracted half-way through stuff.)
Oh, and if anyone is using the Paizo Campaign Tools browser plugin, I'd be more than happy to share the images I used for the tokens where I didn't use the forum avatar. Personally, I like the artwork John picked for Cailyn a lot more than the avatar. I think it fits her better.
Anyway, should have a post up tomorrow night.
Hopefully.

Question about the battle map: are the props depicted on the map items placed in the world or are they just art? So for example, are the containers that appear to be full of liquid next to Dare actually containers full of liquid? (Understanding such liquid could also be alcohol or oil)
Just thinking about what objects in the area may help or hinder the situation.
ETA: Also, rules question: Dare has the grease spell. One of the ages long debates among D&D and Pathfinder players is "Is the grease flammable?"
At my own table it isn't (it shouldn't be that versatile as a 1st level spell IMO), but others have taken to heart that it is described as "grease" and not just "slippery surface" and that if it is literal grease, it should be flammable. I would actually use it presuming it isn't, but it occurs to me to check in case you would rule differently, as in this scene particularly it will affect if Dare might use it in this scene or how.

DM-Salsa |

Re: Containers- Yes, they are there, they have liquid in them. Roll 1d8, on a 8 it's water. On a 1 it's oil, anything else, it's some sort of drink, the lower, the higher proof.
Re: Grease- That's a good question. It's magic grease, so I'm going to say that you can't set it on fire. Logically, though, unless the fire evaporates the grease, it would likely keep it from getting oxygen, so you could smother a fire with the spell. Would that do the same in the other direction, though?

Morning everyone! I hope y'all are doing well. If you would be so kind, when casting a spell that requires a save, please put what it is and the DC in your post. Also, I try to mark the tokens for the baddies with different colors. When you target one of them, please let me know with one. For example, Conrad could have said I punch Blue Stabby and I'd know which one he was targeting. If it's unclear, I'm picking one and moving on. Combat in PBP is slow enough without having to get clarification.

"Willie" Whyte-Vetillus, Esq. |

Yeah, a sound practice, and I noticed just now how I myself specified neither DC nor target in my own post. Whoops. For what it's worth, you figured both out exactly right yourself!

DM-Salsa |

Helps when you have the DC formula memorized. :P
I guess I should make it clear that I'm not trying to call anyone specific out, just trying to let y'all know what's up and what I'd like.

DM-Salsa |

Apologies, I probably should have posted this at the beginning of this thread, but better late than never. Here's how I handle combat in PBP.
Initiative
Whether or not I roll initiative depends on the situation. In cases like this where one side ambushes the other and the other side was not ready for a fight, I won't bother rolling it. The ambushers go then the defenders respond and that'll be the initiative order. It goes both ways, so if y'all get the drop on a bunch of goblins not expecting a , for example, you'd go, then the goblins go.
When I do roll initiative, I roll once for each type of enemy in the fight and for any "hero units" that are part of the fight. This gives me blocks of enemies that act together and PCs that are next to each other in the turn order act together.
For example: Let's say y'all are attacking a group of baddies. There's two types of them and they have a captain and a mage. The group is also expecting trouble.
Initiative rolls
Initiative Baddie Captain: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Initiative Baddie Mage: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Initiative Baddie Type 1: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Initiative Baddie Type 2: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Cailyn Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Conrad Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Dare Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Lita Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Scrapeknee Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Willie Iniative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Roll off Mage: 1d20 ⇒ 8
Roll off Scrapeknee: 1d20 ⇒ 16
So after the surprise round, the turn order would look like this.
Iniative Order:
- Captain
- Baddie Type 2
- Baddie Type 1
- Cailyn, Conrad, Dare, Lita, Scrapeknee, and Willie
- Mage
For the sake of this example, let's say Cailyn and Dare rolled 20's on their initiative.
Then the order would look like this:
Iniative Order:
- Cailyn and Dare
- Captain
- Baddie Type 2
- Baddie Type 1
- Conrad, Lita, Scrapeknee, and Willie
- Mage
In either case, whether I roll or not, I go in the order that people post their actions. Combat in PBP is slow enough without having to go back, get clarification, and resolve what happens. So in the above example. when it's Conrad's, Lita's, Scrapeknee's, and Willie's turn, if Lita posts first and Willie starts an Inspire Courage Bardic Performance in the nest post, she wouldn't get the benefits of it that round, but she would the next. When Willie ends the performance, everyone still gets it the round he ends it.
I do it this way to try and keep things moving and to keep my what little sanity I have intact. It's not a perfect system, but I don't believe such a thing exists and this, more importantly, works pretty well in my experience.
Rolls
When making any roll, I always try to split out what bonuses and penalties are affecting the roll. I'm not going to make you list out the always on stuff, like Weapon Focus, Skill Focus, or the various save improvement feats. I do want you to list out the more transient modifiers like flanking or being prone. Also, if you're attacking an enemy and there's a map, I try to color code the enemies so you can make it clear who's on the receiving end. Here a few examples:
Power Attacking the Blue Ghoul with Flank and Shaken wielding a greatsword, STR: +3, BAB: +3:
Attack (Greatsword, Power Attack, Flank, Shaken) vs. Blue Ghoul: 1d20 + 6 - 1 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 6 - 1 + 2 - 2 = 24
Damage: 2d6 + 4 + 3 ⇒ (6, 5) + 4 + 3 = 18
Picking a lock with improvised tools and guidance, DEX: +2, Disable Device: +3 for Class Skill, +2 for ranks:
Disable Device (Improvised Tools, Guiadance): 1d20 + 7 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 7 - 2 + 1 = 16
And when we eventually get to the point where weapons do various types of damage, like Fire or Electricity, I'd also like for y'all to do the same there. So in the attack example, if that was a Frost/Shock greatsword and the attacker got sneak attack (5d6), the damage dice would look like this.
Damage (Power Attack, Sneak Attack, Frost, Shock): 2d6 + 4 + 3 + 5d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (3, 4) + 4 + 3 + (5, 4, 5, 5, 6) + (2) + (1) = 42
This way, if something has, say Resist Cold 5, I know how much damage came from the Frost and can take off the appropriate amount.
Crits
I like to roll double damage, but, if you'd rather double your damage roll, that's fine too. If you get a critical threat, roll to confirm and roll or calculate the extra damage. So if we take the above example with the greatsword, I'd preview the roll and see if I confirmed, so the dice looks like this:
Attack (Frost/Shock Greatsword, Power Attack, Flank, Shaken) vs. Blue Ghoul: 20 + 6 - 1 + 2 - 2 = 25
Confirm? vs. Blue Ghoul: 1d20 + 6 - 1 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 6 - 1 + 2 - 2 = 18
Damage (Power Attack, Sneak Attack, Frost, Shock): 2d6 + 4 + 3 + 5d6 + 1d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (6, 4) + 4 + 3 + (4, 3, 5, 5, 5) + (1) + (6) = 46
Damage if Crit (Rolling): 2d6 + 4 + 3 + 46 ⇒ (6, 6) + 4 + 3 + 46 = 65
Damage if Crit (Multiplying): 17 + 46 = 63
I did a quick look about damage from Frost or Shock getting multiplied, and apparently the answer is apparently no.
I know this is a lot, but hopefully this clears up any confusion.

Per discussion on Discord, if someone wants to give a Hero Point to another player for them to use, you may do so. I like giving these out as rewards, so I want y'all to use them.

Dare Ashborn |

Belated but starting this past morning the coming week is going to be quite busy. I expect to post but may be slow. Please bot me if needed.

DM-Salsa |

Thank you Dare for the heads up.
To everyone, first, I hope you've had a Happy Easter! Second, I apologize, but I won't be posting tonight. It's been one of those weekends where I don't feel like I've been busy, but I haven't hade the time nor energy to post. I'll get one up tomorrow.

Going to give Lita a little longer to post. I hope y'all are having fun with this little dream sequence. I know I have been. :)

I'll be wrapping this little dream sequence up in the next post or three. I'm glad y'all liked it. That said, what would make up your character's worst nightmares?

Finding yourself in a blue dress and a kind but condescending celestial being asks you to greet the dawn, and you have absolutely no f!#%ing idea how to respond. Utter anxiety dream. (Truly. She's terrified right now. She's in a completely alien situation and has no idea how to handle herself.)
Dare probably also has some more typical trauma dreams about the orphanage fire. Not so much as the fear of fire--I mean, she has elemental blood, she's not afraid of fire--but of all the children who died who she couldn't save. Creepy stuff, voices calling her name, hands reaching toward her crumbling to ash. She's probably so used to having those though she wouldn't really interact much though.
I will note to be honest I am not keen on getting in depth nightmare scenes. I've had some GMs do some s#&@ty creepy stuff to me through nightmare scenes. I trust you Salsa, but I've got my own issues there, so I'll feel reluctant to dig into it. I will do my best to play along, but I feel like I should offer fair warning.

Cailyn Vanderale |

Hmm... could go with something twlight zone-ish and say going blind so she couldn't read anymore. Or being trapped in a library as it burns.
But in truth, it is probably being crushed under her mother's vast disapproval.

DM-Salsa |

@Dare: That's fair. I was thinking about asking y'all to write up the nightmare anyway when I asked about it. I think I'll just go that route since it'll side step any issues that might come from me writing them up, and I've screwed this up before, so there's that, too.
So, if y'all would be so kind as to be thinking about that, I'll let you know when the nightmares happen.
@Cailyn: I now have this montage in my head of an increasing distraught Cailyn as her mother offers increasingly minor criticisms. It's actually kinda funny.

I'm pretty sure I know that mother.... (fortunately, not my own)... poor Cailyn. :)

Scrapeknee |

One of Scrapeknee's biggest fears would be a variation of the goblin raid, in a what if it were successful. Sandpoint in flames, his uncle aunt and cousins dead, his friends ash... and likely him helpless to do anything about it this time.
Another fear might be he imagines himself in the cinderlands, and the Shoanti there act like they don't know who his mtoher was. He returns to Sandpoint, only no one there remembers or "knows" him either. He looks in a mirror and he has no face.
Third option probably involves his bad leg 'spreading' until he can't move any limb, and just lays there, "a leech on society" that everyone pities at best, disdains at worst. Just when he thinks he figures he can at least watch his friends hoping to be content to at least a spectator to their joy... his vision begins to blur, and sounds... go quiet.

![]() |

Hmm. What would Conrad be most afraid of?
I'd guess dreaming about getting spurned by Shelyn herself would hurt really bad.
Maybe learning that his family was made the laughingstock of their village because of him, and had to leave, would also be a really scary thought. Or coming back home, after trying to make a name for himself out in the world, only to find out that his close family had died, and he wasn't even there to hold their hand - or even to learn that something awful had happened. Anything relying on being powerless to prevent his loved ones from being harmed would be really scary to him.
Another scary scenario: finally having his dream come true, become a respected Shelynite, and moving up the social ladder of the clergy, only to find himself surrounded with people who come from a much higher class than he does and feeling completely left out and unable to fit in. That would crush his life purpose pretty bad.
