Harrowstone Prison
As the area is now secure, I will assume that the balance of the group will head down the rope, so I have moved all Avatars into the pit. There are still 3 ropes securely tied to the upper floor.
Four dark hallways exit from this large empty chamber, each striking out in one of the four directions of the compass, and each decorated with a soot-caked brass nameplate affixed to the ceiling just above the entrance. Cole looks up at the edge of the hall and sees a nameplate above his head as well.
A rubble-choked stairway leads up in the middle of the room, while eight skeletons dressed in scorched prisoners’ robes lie on the ground. They all still lay where they met their horrific fate.
Except for the sound of the group's breathing, all is quiet down here.
I'll address the Perception checks once the group fully enters the room.

Sergei the Haunted |

Sergei frowned at the single rope leading into the pit, like he didn't trust it. He took a moment to retrieve two pitons from his small pack and walked back towards the sturdy stone floor near where they entered. One at a time he simply held the pitons over the floor and they launched from his hands like they'd been fired from a bow, lodging deep into the stone.
Then a rope snaked from his pack, tied itself in a pair of knots around the pitons, and followed Sergei like an obedient snake back to the hole. It slithered down parallel to the other rope, reaching out to knot itself to it's twin every foot or so.
Sergei started climbing down, watching the rope ladder form beneath his feet as he went. At the bottom he brushed his hands off and patted himself down and retrieved a pipe and a pouch from inside his jacket. He packed it efficiently as he waited for the others to finish climbing down, then made an unhappy noise as he failed to find anything to light it with.
"Вы не возражаете?" he asked Cole, lifting his pipe in the pyromancer's direction.

That is now the second time that Sergei has spoken in a language unfamiliar to any of you.

Kenzo Hagetora |

Kenzo looks over at Sergei and says, "What did you just say? I did not understand it."

Sterling Starshadow |

Sterling makes his way down, with minimal assistance. The cleric adjusts his hood and watches with interest as Sergei magics his own rope-ladder into the hole.
Sterling steps slightly closer to Sergei. Not, quite, within touching distance.
"Sergei? What language is that?"

"Sergei? What language is that?"
Sergei made a disgruntled face behind his dark glasses. He pursed his lips, then slowly said "Am Marcella. No Sergei. Speak... is patterna. Vistani."

Teofila Agarici |

Teofila hadn't thought anything of Sergei saying a thing or two she couldn't understand. She'd just assumed he was talking to someone else in a language they both knew but she didn't. But now things are getting weird, perhaps concerning.
"What?" she asks Sergei. "You are Marcella? Is that what you mean? Who is Marcella? What is Vistani?"

Sergei the Haunted |

Sergei's brows furrowed in frustrated concentration. "Slow. Please. No speak... this. Sergei hear. Sergei tell... how I say... ah, how I... repsond? Ah no, how I respond, da? Vistani is... my people. My speak."
He made a frustrated noise and had a rapid fire, one-sided conversation in the Vistani language nobody else understood, like he was speaking to someone nobody else could hear. She sounded angry, and spoke expressively with her hands.
When he was finished he sighed and gestured to himself. "One body... Many soul... Sergei inside... Am Marcella now."
Marcella has a very thick, nearly unintelligible Romanian-ish accent. She talks with her hands like a grumpy Russian grandmother.

Cole Burrns |

I once had a GM that had a NPC that changed classes with his multiple personality disorder. Every morning he would roll randomly what aspect took control, then he would dress differently and act accordingly. Bonkers fun.
Understanding the gesture with the pipe, regardless of the language, Cole nods and waves a hand over the pipe, igniting the tobacco with a flash of sparks. His sword's light dims for a second when he does so, but he then relights the tip easily enough and moves on.
"Zajar ku lif."

Sergei the Haunted |

Sergei took a few puffs of his pipe to flare the embers Cole made, then a deep, satisfying pull. He smiled and sighed out the smoke like it was something he'd been missing for a very long time.
"Cпасибо, Cole"

Teofila Agarici |

Looks like Teofila is the only one who speaks Varisian and is trained in linguistics. I guess she should field the starting question.
With another utterance from Sergei, and reflection on what he has said before, Teofila thinks maybe there's something she recognizes about the language 'Marcella' is speaking. It's not the language change that distresses her though. That is just a symptom of what Marcella is describing as 'many souls in the body', perhaps a possession of some sort.
Teofila thinks about that first.

Teo isn't entirely sure what is happening. Is Sergei's presence here triggering a latent medium ability and is he drawing in souls that were trapped here? Does he harbor souls within himself normally, that is so rare that Teo has never even heard of the phenomena. From the beginning he claimed he be from a land she had never heard of but yet was in Van Richten's notes, Barovia. The question is, should the group hash this all out before entering further into a place where the departed may well be able to inhabit one of your allies?

Kenzo Hagetora |

"Is it possible he was possessed when we entered this place?" Kenzo asks as he eyes him warily.

Teofila Agarici |

Teofila shrugs at Kenzo's question. She decides since she can't figure it out herself, she might as well ask the person most likely to know what's going on. It probably can't hurt.
"Marcella, why are there many souls in this one body?"

Marcella listened, pausing for whatever translation was happening beyond everyone else's hearing. Sergei's lips pursed behind his scarf and she had another short, one-sided conversation in the Vistani language. Teo made out what she thought were the Varisian words for "fear," "trust," and "stupidity," among the short tirade. Marcella was clearly fed up with whatever Sergei was telling her.
She pulled the scarf and dark glasses off, revealing Sergei's features for the first time. He was clearly not human. His skin was nearly white and unnaturally smooth. He looked more like a marble statue of breathtaking quality, like a man who'd been turned to stone and then animated by magic. His eyes looked like they were solid gold, and etched to give the impression of pupils and irises.
She nodded and pointed to Kenzo. "Before, da. All time."
"Body is... she trailed off, unable to find the words. She made a sound mimicking suction, and mimed pulling things towards herself. Then held up one of the Haunt Siphons. "Like this, da?"
She tapped Sergei's forehead with one finger. "Sergei very haunted."

Teofila Agarici |

Realizing the connection between the language and Varisian might make switching languages herself a good idea, Teofila asks in Varisian whether Marcella understands her better now, and repeats her question about why so many souls since that doesn't happen under any normal circumstances.
"Сега разбираш ли ме по-добре? Защо тази форма може да побере толкова много души? Това не е нещо, което обикновено може да се случи."

If it requires K Engineering Teofila is out of luck. Well, it looks like she's out of luck regardless. Ouch with the dice rolls lately.

Sergei the Haunted |

Marcella's eyes widened and she smiled as she recognized the language. The dialect was quite different, but clearly close enough.
She shrugged. "Я не знаю, как было сделано это тело, или как оно работает. Я подозреваю, что оно было предназначено только для одной души. Может быть, оно было сделано неправильно?"

Bastion looks on, somewhat concerned. Then he turns his keen eyes toward the darkness, hoping the others will be able to solve this mystery and that nothing is trying to creep up on them while they do so.

Cole Burrns |

Not fascinated in the least by the odd conversation, Cole stays calculating and quiet, moving toward the obvious tunnel. He begins checking the structural integrity of it, to determine if it is safe to enter before they move on.
Let me know if I need to make any actual Engineering or more Perception rolls. (Or you can make them for me to save time!) I'm assuming this place is fairly stable from here out, unless you say so GM. Cole is basically keeping his eyes out for signs of falling earth/rock or possible physical traps too.
He waves Ogre over.

If you speak Varisian, it's close enough to Vistani to get the gist.
There's an Osirioni construct-race called the Shabti that are essentially an artificial body made to trap and house a soul. They're kinda like living golems, or androids. As far as you know they are made for individuals, usually for the purpose of escaping some kind of punishment in the afterlife. Generally speaking, Pharasma is not a fan.
As far as you know they're not a one-size-fits-all thing. They have to be tailor made for specific people and can't be reused. Once made, they work pretty much the same way a normal body does. Stuffing multiple souls into one would require pretty weird circumstances.

The 19 Knowledge Religion roll would be sufficient to know this and would seem to be a logical conclusion based on what "Sergei" said thus far.

As the rest of the Party tries to determine whether Sergei's predicament could cause any extra trouble in the already clearly haunted prison, Cole edges forward to inspect the tunnel.
He does not get the sense that the area is trapped (or at least no traps go off as he inspects the narrow side passages) or that the are is particularly precarious from a structural standpoint. The fire appears to not have impacted this natural cave area outside of collapsing the mechanism on the lift.
A further inspection of the next room would be in order to determine if there is any true fire damage or if the only damage was the smoke that filled the area and caked onto the walls.
Cole do you want to move fully into the next room?

Certainly it's an odd omen that you tracked them to the village where you understand it Van Richten retired. You have to wonder if there is any significance to that but you can find out when you seek him out.
For now, this abandoned prison seems a good place to inspect and you indeed find runes that are quite suspicious on the base of its foundation!
As you contemplate whether to briefly enter and inspect or simply head to the village to catch up with the Doctor, you see a female exit the prison itself!
She appears to be a Tiefling. She does not dress in the dark garb that your nemeses don. Of course, that does not mean she is not in league with them though you do not recall a Tiefling among their number.
Do you wish to: (a) follow her, (b) approach and encounter her, (c) wait for her to leave and enter the prison, or (d) something else altogether? FYI, I have placed you on the Harrowstone Grounds map, let me know if you are unable to access it. All maps are linked at the to of the page in a hyper link.

Sterling tilts his head slightly, and a hiss escapes from under his hood.
"Shabti. If I'm not mistaken." The cleric says coldly.
Sterling looks at Teo, "An Orisini construct. A construct body made to house a soul. Usually to escape punishment in the afterlife. Or otherwise cheat death."
The cleric reaches up and rubs his temple.
"Pharasma is NOT gonna like this. One bit." He mutters.
Sterling sighs, a bit dramatic for the usually reserved cleric, and pulls back his hood enough to see his face as he looks Sergei, or whomever it is, in the eyes.
"Seems you've put me in a bit of a predicament Sergei, um,... Marcella. Avoiding the afterlife is a big 'NO-NO', and something I'm required to address when discovered. With extreme prejudice. BUT,... I've never heard of a Shabti housing more than one soul. You aren't some Archmage trying to avoid the afterlife via lichdom. You're, something else."
Sterling relaxes a bit, a ghost of a smile on his lips.
"As the ranking member of Pharasma's clergy present, I officially declare the situation requires careful investigation. Just how 'haunted' are you? How many people are in,..."
Sterling stops at the sound of Ogre's battle cry, followed immediately by the familiar sound of Cole's fire magic. He sighs again, more in frustration this time, and pulls his hood back up.
"Of course. JUST when things were getting interesting. I hope we can continue this discussion later."

You head in through the front doors at rapid speed.
INSIDE Harrowstone Prison
A two-story stone building looms in the center of the prison grounds. Ivy and moss cling tenaciously to the walls, while above the wooden shingles of the roof are often missing entirely, exposing the wooden rafters of the upper structure to the sky. Here and there, leering stone gargoyles perch on the eaves, once functioning as drainspouts and decorations but now seeming almost to serve a more ominous role of sentinels.
Many of these stone decorations have crumbled away and lie in ruined piles on the soggy ground below. Windows in the building’s facade are narrow and blocked by grills of rusty iron bars. Stone columns support a slumping wooden balcony over the building’s wooden front doors, both of which hang askew and reveal dark glimpses of chambers within.
Heedless of the danger, you move through and into a wide hall flanked by a pair of waiting rooms, but the foyer to Harrowstone now lies in ruins. With little left to hold up the ceiling, the wooden beams above sag dramatically. The wall to the north contains a large pair of oaken doors. The doors are closed and look as solid as the day they were installed. A lock which may have held them closed, sits on the ground useless now.
Pushing forward, the doors swing open as if they were just oiled yesterday.
Streaks of mold stain the walls of this foyer, and the floor below is a thick, gray carpet of fungal growth. Sturdy wooden doors beckon from every wall. The oaken doors are of the same style as the ones just opened.
From here you may go, east, north, or west.
Make a Perception check to determine if you can hear the Party, DC 20.

Yes, but I rolled low damage with very little visible effect against the ectoplasm creature, and destroying the haunt was 'cool' but did not really satisfy Cole's need to 'burn' things. (Death and destruction are useful tools, but burning things...actually catching them on fire...that's so much more!) The skeletons are normally up his alley for burnable undead, AND I rolled max damage for once too! So...its very disappointing so far to Cole's perspective. He really hasn't 'burned' anything yet.
