Lem tries to catch fish by hand but slips and makes a big splash instead. Maxamus dives in and actually swims after the fish. Miraculously, he catches one! Kargoth recalls a story of how the dwarven hero Lortak caught fish. Inspired, he duplicates the method and catches a fish. Orsis dances to distract the crowd but he forgets some of the steps, causing the crowd to ignore him. Knuckles successfully distracts another competitor enough to steal a fish from his bucket. Sif somehow manages to hypnotize the fish that they willingly jump into her bucket.

"It’s not over until the fish are counted", grumbles Deka as she hoists another catch into her half-full basket.
"Might as well be! You have no hope to catch up", replies Demed as fish start jumping from the water directly into his overflowing basket.
You realize that Demed's bait is somehow charming the fish but their behavior is becoming erratic, indicating that the magic is either very powerful or unstable.

The party may advocate for Demed:
DC 17 Diplomacy
DC 15 Arcana/Nature/Occultism - explain that the magic’s harm was the result of a malfunction rather than malice

![]() |

KArgoth explains to the judges that Demed's magic bait was not malicious in nature. The judges accept his explanation. However, they do disqualify most of Demed's catches. Demed is grateful to the party for advocating on his behalf.
"Thank you for speaking on my behalf. I won't use anything I don't understand in the future. I might have caused lasting harm to my new friends."
With everything back in order, the tournament resumes.
Lem plays a rousing tune in celebration of the party's victory against the crabs. It gets the crowd into it so much that Knuckles is easily able to steal fish. Kargoth remembers how to make snares and uses the knowledge to great effect, catching a fish. Maxamus tries to sneak up to a fish but, like Lem, slips on a wet rock and makes a big splash. Sif recalls a recipe for some sushi and decides to try it on a fish, managing to stab it with a pointy stick. Orsis picks up a coin and uses it to shoot needles at a fish, striking it and killing it.
