Dropping this here...
Bounty #15: Treasure Off the Coast
It looks like Behind the Mask is missing in action again, because they send the group another scroll which states their reason for absence, the same reason as the previous one. Included with it is a pouch of coins for their travel to the next destination, and a copy of the bounty which writes:
“Fortune and glory await daring adventurers. Ask Laela Vost about exciting opportunities. Experience on boats and at sea is a bonus!”
Moist Definitely
|
Experience on boats. Hmm. I could try to cook on a boat. Might take some practice.
Moist exudes his now-familiar lack of confidence as he continues to rub down his shiny heady to keep it wet.
Then his teammate pipes up.
How do you mean Rybar? Do you think you'll get sick on the voyage?
He grimaces even as he asks it.
Rybar Gannon
|
"I don't know how to tie knots Moist. I hear you have to do that well to be part of a boat's crew. Are you not in the water often yourself?"
Olegaro
|
After reading the scrolls, Olegaro will pipe up "You know, for someone born in Absalom, I really haven't spent much time on boats. Just a couple of journeys here and there, and ah maybe hanging around the docks a bit too much as a youngster." but finishes awkwardly. He distracts himself a bit checking his gear is in order.
Responding to Rybar's comment, Olegaro brightens "Yeah, same Rybar, hope they don't ask us to crew the thing! I'm game for another boat trip though."
Moist Definitely
|
Water? Sure, but fresh water. I've also spent a lot of time in cities and in caravans across Varisia, keeping myself wet with baths between shifts as a cook. Sometimes in the fountains of Absalom, when I could get away with it. Saltwater and knots? Not so much.
His tongue lashes out to lick his left eyeball.
| GM Frost |
I'm back. Apologies for the delay. Monday in my country is a holiday and I took the opportunity to have rest for the day.
The adventure begins when the group reaches their destination, in Ravounel’s capital city of Kintargo. As they cross Bleakbridge, the bridge connects the northern and southern halves of the city and also serves as a thriving hub of commerce. The marketplace’s slender, wooden storefronts dissipate into tents and pop-up vendors. As they pass a lively tavern called Clenchjaw’s, they spot a sandwich board sign with the silhouette of a swashbuckling figure with silver ravens flying behind them, whose bounty is very similar to that they just received from Behind the Mask, but this time with Laela Vost written below the texts.
Inside the lively tavern, the party has no trouble finding people who can point them to Laela Vost, a bronze-skinned Taldan woman in fine embroidered clothes, sitting at a table within view of the band playing on stage.
"Welcome! Have some mint tea and butter mints, as well as a seat at my table." she welcomes them. She briefly interviews each person. "It looks to me that you are interested in my bounty. I hope you don't mind me asking about your name and adventuring experience and how you all work together as a team." she tells them. "I just want to make sure that everyone in the group is fit for what I will be proposing."
Olegaro
|
Olegaro will speak up "It is a pleasure to meet you Ms Vost! I am called Olegaro and I've been adventuring with this fine group for a few months now. We have been traveling from Druma to Vidrian and back again resolving problems and answering posted bounties! Whether it is a Chupacabra, possessed cobblestones or an escaped herd of cute baby dinosaurs we have been able to work together and make things good. We've even managed to make a decent soup together." he finishes with a grin.
Moist Definitely
|
Um, oh. I'm Moist! Yeah, it guess it has been a couple or few months like Olegaro said. You'd think they line us up with missions where we left off, but they keep slingshotting us around the Inner Sea! Well, anyway, we get to see a lot of places. As for soup, well I can do better than a decent one, or two, or three. Depending on the local ingredients.
His rubs his head and licks his other eye.
Rybar Gannon
|
"I am Rybar Ganon. As a team, we've worked together on five missions so far, all of which have proved to be successful. As for the what is fit and what is not, that depends on what your proposal is. Precisely what is it anyways?"
Hanu, Friend of the Wood
|
Hanu nods, helps himself to mint tea and butter mints instead of talking.
3d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 1) = 4 disappear of the course of several minutes - in fact - he might've eaten the whole tray...
| GM Frost |
Laela intently listens to some of the stories, with Hanu going unnoticed to her.
"Wow! Those are brave adventures, I can say. I believe you are overqualified for what I can offer." the Taldan woman tells them excitedly. She then gathers them around to huddle.
"You know this exciting opportunity I am talking about? It is to liberate treasure from a wrecked Chelaxian ship, the Infidius, just off the coast. I served aboard the ship as part of its crew when the ship ran ground, and the merchandise on board would act as my severance pay and help me start up my own business."
"I am happy to split the salvage equally with you. If you are willing, come and join me outside." she then motions them before she gets out of the tavern and goes toward the skiff.
"The waters are choppy and treacherous, so I advise you to not come dressed as an anchor."
Rybar Gannon's Nature Save (T): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Laela jumps aboard into her skiff. "I know it is small, but sure enough we will all fit in it." she then points out the the direction of the ship's wreckage. "We are going there so you take your positions and I will row the skiff myself." she excitedly tells them.
Zepth.
|
"Well, I usually travel light anyway!" replies Zepth, not toally sure about his ability to swim, so there's a spec of doubt in his voice as he says this.
Ōtani Yoshitsugu.
|
Otani politely sips tea, pinky talon raised appropriately. At the mention of traveling light, the Tengu grins.
Born that way!
The Samurai boards the skiff, sitting toward the front.
Sure hope the kraken isn't around...
Hanu, Friend of the Wood
|
Unnoticed, Hanu wipes crumbs from his mouth later, realizing only too late that he had left evidence!
Upon the boat, he seems to always move around, feeling with his lower thumbs the balance of the skiff, and compensating by monkeying this way or that, using his staff for balance.
Olegaro
|
"Umm, dressed like an anchor? I guess I'd qualify." Olegaro will say looking down at his chain mail. "It would be very odd going into an unknown situation without it though. Do you have an armorer here who does something lighter? Say leather armor?"
and if it is possible, Olegaro will purchase some leather and change into that before boarding. He'll stash his chain mail in a bag and leave it where they are staying. He'll keep his shield though!
Moist Definitely
|
Oh, I'm sure we won't actually use you as an anchor, Olegaro. You will be fine as you are.
Moist smiles as he attempts to reassure the fighter. Right now he has only blind trust in the skiff.
| GM Frost |
Laela rows the skiff once everyone has settled. As they travel, she lectures them some history.
"“The ship belonged to the Delronge family, wealthy merchants who are loyal to Cheliax’s ruling house of Thrune. I don’t know what all they were trying to haul out of the city, but I can guarantee it’s their best stocks. I’m sure the nobility will overpay even more than they already were for whatever we find.” she shares to them when a small wave rocks their small boat.
"So far," she continues, "I think no one has ventured to the wreck, but once the current political climate subsides, it’ll be every person for themselves in a mad dash to reclaim lost Chelaxian plunder. And I am taking this chance early," she adds with a wink when suddenly... one particularly large wave rocks the boat hard enough that every PC must succeed at a DC 14 Reflex save or be thrown overboard!

Rybar Gannon's Reflex Save (T): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Laela easily stands at her ground, or skiff, against the wave with Moist, Olegaro and Zepth. Otani, Hanu, and Rybar, on the other hand, are washed out of their small boat. Fortunately for them, they aren’t in any real danger of drowning, as the water here is mostly calm, though the experience of being thoroughly soaked combined with the chill sea breeze is an unpleasant one.
Laela moves and pulls back those that fell into the water and continues to navigate to the mostly intact bow of the Infidius.
"Okay, you gotta get off the boat now so I can row the boat away from the wreckage. I won’t risk adding my boat to the ruins of the Infidius, of course! Bring me what you can bring back here." Laela also provides them with a signal whistle. "I will return in half an hour before high tide rolls in, but I’ll stay close enough to hear the whistle in case you run into unexpected trouble and need to leave sooner."
Shattered sections of bulwark bob in the open waters here. A massive sail grasps for the sky, barely tethered to a fractured mast. The ship’s cabin door hangs open by a hinge, the interior appearing tossed for valuables. With nothing but barnacles left on deck, and a few barrels buoying between the rocks, they can quickly appraise that anything worth salvaging would be in the submerged hull.
Recovering cargo plays out over 2 phases, each representing 10 minutes of activity. During each phase, each PC can attempt one DC 15 skill check to scavenge or identify items: an Athletics check to Swim, a Thievery check to Disable a Device, or a Perception check to Seek. A PC who succeeds at one of these checks manages to recover chests, barrels, or other floating items in the murky water. Similarly, a PC who succeeds at an Arcana, Crafting, Nature, Religion, or Society check (or an applicable DC 13 Lore check) to Recall Knowledge identifies valuables in the scavenged chests.
Roll your skills for the two phases.
