Makai
Makai hammers the bush again! Yes, I think you did it the best way, in narrative order
She finds herself able to overcome the draining thorns, but not the screeching creature's eerie voice.
______
Iarann
The other dwarf has a similar experience, feeling sick by the tuber's howl but withstanding the draining thorns nonetheless.
Iarann focuses on the vines holding him, only managing to connect once.
______
Bair
Bair rushes in, and brings his axe to bear in a blow that splinters the bush's trunk! It does indeed bleed; in fact, the barbarian may be surprised to see blood instead of sap pouring forth!
______
Fafrd
Fard's arrow pierces the tuber's hide; it sticks but doesn't seem to do any extra damage. Perhaps these particular creatures are not actually fey? I will assume you save any other CI arrows.
His next two mundane arrows stick into the thing's tough hide, making it squeal in pain as it dies. Last arrow killed it. Iarann's left leg is free! One-third of the way there!
______
Kamil
Kamil calls upon his heritage to bring a jagged crack of lightning across the battlefield — BOOM!

Makai Goldenoak

Makai runs through the bushes and smacks the creature holding to Iarann. She prays for a moment and channels energy into her hammer
Channel Smite (Harm 2nd lvl) Warhammer@tuber 3 flanked: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (14) + 16 = 30
Damage, b: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (5, 2) + 4 = 11

Makai brings the hammer down on the creature
"It is time for you to let him go!"
Move, channel smite
| GM Doug H |
Bair may have a career in lumberjacking as the puking barbarian rushes to the tree and hacks away. The tree totters and creaks… but it doesn't fall. not yet!
Makai's hammer bludgeons and withers the tuber-thing clinging to Iran, but it holds on tight!

"Bits of breakfast tarnishing his perfect beard, Iarann projectile vomits on the little one holding on, [b]"Take that ye durned bush!"
He then comes crashing down with his axe on the little guy
ATK 1: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (13) + 18 = 31 for DMG if hit: 2d12 + 7 ⇒ (2, 8) + 7 = 17 and Cold: 1d6 ⇒ 1
ATK 1: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (9) + 13 = 22 for DMG if hit: 2d12 + 7 ⇒ (2, 9) + 7 = 18 and Cold: 1d6 ⇒ 4
| GM Doug H |
Iarann chops the head off the little blood-sucker and then tries to burst free of his bonds. Using the 9 above.
Escape using Athletics: 9 + 19 - 5 = 23
Unfortunately he is unable to escape the choking vines. That's OK, he can just stay where he is and chop 'em apart too.
Morgan is up!
Before your turn, we need a DC 25 fort vs 23 damage and Drained 1, On a crit fail double this damage and drained 2.
Morgan Titchwillow
|
Fort save, DC 25: 1d20 + 11 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 11 - 2 = 29
A furious resolve fills Morgan as she fights against the blood drain. Regardless, she's struck by a vine and is bleeding freely. Now 25/71 hp. Assuming the crit success means no damage from blood drain.
Morgan attempts another spell, still struggling against the viney bonds.
Flat check: 1d20 ⇒ 18
Electricity flies out once more towards their remaining foe.
Electric Arc, DC 23 Reflex: 4d4 + 4 ⇒ (2, 2, 2, 3) + 4 = 13
She then shouts at her zombie companion. "Kill it already!"
Rhob does his best to follow his mistress' command.
Fist vs 1: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24
Damage (B): 2d8 + 3 ⇒ (4, 3) + 3 = 10
Fist vs 1: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Damage (B): 2d8 + 3 ⇒ (1, 7) + 3 = 11
| GM Doug H |
bus reflex, unmodified: 1d20 ⇒ 18
The bush avoids the worst if the arc, but then Rhob’s meaty fist splatters bloody berries all over the ground, killing it!
Success! Out of combat. I’ll move us on after work.
Fafrd the Grey Mouse
|
Fafrd will immediately bind Morgan's wounds with his healing skills.
Medicine(E) for First Aid: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (19) + 15 = 34
"You stood up to them valiantly, ma'am."
Assuming we don't need battle medicine at this point
| GM Doug H |
After you heal up Bjersig Torrsen finds you in the trail again. Let's go, eh?
He and maki walk, with you until you come to an area blocked by thick undergrowth. He produces a map. “Qxal has changed things in an effort to throw us off course. We must make our own adjustments to counter. Let’s go ahead to chart a new course. Keep your eyes open, though; the fey are sure to have set a few surprises for us.”
There are 3 skill challenges, and I need 2 successes or 1 crit success from the group to succeed. Anyone can make a check. We will attain those and then immediately move on to the next skill challenge.
Ahead there is thick undergrowth where previously there were clear paths. Find a better path or clear a route through this brush:
⠀➤ Athletics to force through the brush.
⠀➤ Acrobatics to skirt it.
⠀➤ Nature to recognize the plant from a distance.
⠀➤ Survival to spot its habitat.
All DCs are 25. Go ahead and roll another skill or appropriate lore if you want to sell me on something (IMO Scouting Lore makes sense here), and I will adjudicate. If you use a non-cantrip spell that's appropriate yo can auto-succeed.
Everyone is up!
Morgan Titchwillow
|
Morgan is not particularly adept at navigating the natural world, unless it is swampland. Still, she does the best she can.
Nature, DC 25: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24 Sigh, of course
Fafrd the Grey Mouse
|
Fafrd does his best to skirt the undergrowth, and easily does so.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (19) + 14 = 33
Bair Mann
|
Acrobatics (E) + Bracelets: 1d20 + 15 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 15 + 1 = 32
”Hah! Nice moves bud. Yeah, try a flip next tahm!”
Makai Goldenoak
|
Makai looks at the plants from afar
Nature, DC25: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17
"Are those ferns? I think they are ferns..."
Iarann Thunderstriker
|
| 1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Iarann, having combed the vomit out of his beard, looks at the thorns and brush, "Ahhhh! A little massage! How convenient! It looks gentle like the brush me mum used to use on our back hair!" Assurance Athletics will be a pass.
| GM Doug H |
Iarann has a wistful moment as Fafrd and Bair you get through! more than enough successes with iarann's as well
Next, Qxal has created pockets of dangerous gas. The skill options are:
⠀➤ Medicine to recognize the harmful gases.
⠀➤ Nature to recognize vents where gases emerge.
⠀➤ Survival to get through the pockets quickly.
⠀➤ Perception to smell the gas.
As before, DC 25!
Morgan Titchwillow
|
Swamp Lore, DC 25: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (10) + 13 = 23
Having grown up in the Graidmere Swamp in Ustalav, Morgan is familiar with the dangers of marsh gas. But not this gas, it seems.
Iarann Thunderstriker
|
Perception: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (15) + 17 = 32 sniff.... snigg "Bloody 'ell! Morgan did one of your entourage let one go?"
He looks around and then inhales deeply. "Oh wait.... no... that's .... oi! Be careful, and mind the fire!"
Makai Goldenoak
|
Makai knows a thing or two about medicine
Medicine, DC25: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (7) + 14 = 21
But she does not recognize those gases. She just can't put her hammer on it
Fafrd the Grey Mouse
|
Perception: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (10) + 16 = 26
Fafrd keeps his eyes and nose ready for finding noxious gases.
| GM Doug H |
Success!
Lastly, there are sudden powerful bursts of wind that can push you off ledges or into trees. The skill options are:
⠀➤ Athletics to withstand the blast.
⠀➤ Nature to notice when the wind is about to start.\
⠀➤ Survival to find a safe place to shelter.
⠀➤ Stealth to hide behind cover.
As before DC 25. We'll give you 1 success because Iarann has Assurance and didn't get to use it before, but feel free to post about it
Fafrd the Grey Mouse
|
Fafrd attempts to hide behind cover, and does so!
Stealth: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (16) + 14 = 30
| GM Doug H |
With that, you get through ti!
Successs! Moving you on to Disguised forces soon.
| GM Doug H |
Finally, you leave Bjersig and his hound behind. Ahead, Fola Barun returns from a trip to the front of the caravan. “Please, I’d like you to go and relieve the vanguard for a while. Beware, though, as we travel deeper into this forest. Some things are not meant to be found, and not all who guard them are what they seem.”
You move ahead into a forested area with a cheerful stream gurgling through tumbled boulders. As you cross a log you hear the heart-wrenching cry of injured animals. It seems three owls have been caught in traps, and are injured!
Map up on Slide 1. What do you do?
Kamil Durus
|
Be careful, Fola Barun warned us about things that not what they seems.
Turning to his comrades more knowledgeable about nature than him Kamil asks Are you sure these are real owls?
He then casts Detect Magic 4th level in the area where the owls are.
Fafrd the Grey Mouse
|
"This cannot be what it seems... let me go check it out." whispers Fafrd.
He then sneaks over towards #1 Stealth +14, Perception for traps +17 with trapfinder.
If it looks safe, he will try and rescue the owl.
| GM Doug H |
Posting now, this will trigger combat, I will edit this post with the init block

As Fafrd approaches, with Kamil getting within range for dectct magic, the owls transform into creatures clothed in in verdant lichen and flowers of broom, meadowsweet, and oak! They have skin of velvety moss and living grass for hair. Change shape automatically beats PCs' DCs, and they transform into their form as a free action.
Bair screams but his voice cracks. Intimidation rolled; nat 1
The second creature gets the drop on you. Thery were waiting ion ambush after all. Blossoms explode on his body, blowing pollen into the air! Another free action; Aura
EVERYONE should make a DC 22 fort (aura, primal) before the beginning of their turn. If you fail you are Sick 2. If you succeed you are immune to all the creatures' auras for 24 hours. It's a 30-foot aura which is marked on the map.
The creature then whispers a lullaby; it sounds like a gentle breeze ruling the leaves under a moonlight sky. Makai, Bair, and Kamil begin to feel drowsy. HEIGHTENED LEVEL 4 sleep. Yes Sleep is incapacitation but none of you are level 9 (> 2x spell level). Please make a DC 25 will save after your Allergen save.
Each creature in the area becomes drowsy and might fall asleep. A creature that falls unconscious from this spell doesn't fall prone or release what it's holding. This spell doesn't prevent creatures from waking up due to a successful Perception check, limiting its utility in combat.
Critical Success The creature is unaffected.
Success The creature takes a –1 status penalty to Perception checks for 1 round.
Failure The creature falls unconscious for 1 round. They fall prone and release what they're holding, and they can't attempt Perception checks to wake up. When the duration ends, the creature is sleeping normally instead of automatically waking up (meaning you can make the checks to wake up)
Critical Failure The creature falls unconscious for 1 minute. They fall prone and release what they're holding, and they can't attempt Perception checks to wake up. When the duration ends, the creature is sleeping normally instead of automatically waking up.
It then loads a sling made of vines.
