"Are you sure Setare knows we are sneaking? Cause that didn't seem too sneaky, but I am new to this." grunyak says in a whisper to Blackjack. Grunyak grips his spear waiting for the hail of guards still floating inches off the ground.
Where to now?

GM Chyro |

I am so very much reminded of the old Dexter's Lab cartoon, where Dee Dee just slams the door open, with that loud "Hello!"
This large flat balcony faces the sea on three sides, revealing a commanding view of all seaward approaches to the bastion.
Four grates cover evenly spaced squares on the west side while a gallows and two ballistae guard the east.
Two doors, one to the west and one to the north, lead back inside the bastion while a long stairway along the southern edge of the balcony
leads down to the causeway.
As Setare nearly slams open the door, moving past Unnvar, nine heads turn to look at the woman. Up ahead, a stout and grim looking dwarf, flanked by four hounds. Behind him, four guardsmen behind two ballistae....and a gallows with a man hanging from them. Whether he is dead or alive, you could not say from here.
Dwarf: "What in the... who the heck are you, yer no' supposed to be here. Explain yerself, 'fore i have you put into the stocks below."
The guards' hands reach for weapons, but do not draw them yet.
Though two of them have those hands near the ballistae.
For this encounter, you have 2 rounds to attempt to convince them you are actually supposed to be here. While i doubt you'll not succeed, not doing so will turn into a fight.

![]() |

Unnvar somewhat surprised by Setare sudden action just as he was leaning into the door to listen. Pushes his way back to the front. He eyes the dwarf and studies him quickly, but does not respond to his query, he's ready for a fight, but will hold back in case the group want to talk instead.
If allowed pre-initiative, I'll study target on the dwarf. If not no biggie.

![]() |

Setare looks at the Dwarf and suddenly her whole demeanor changes and the quivering voice vanishes!
"What kind of question is that? How is it possible that we were not welcomed at all when we teleported here? You were informed that we were to come here to transport the pirate Caradoc Alazario and you have nothing prepared? A true disappointment! Tell me your name officer!" she says with a stern look on her face.

Auto-assist bluff
"We're keen not to avoid disappointing the people in Corentyn, the sooner this can get straightened out the sooner we can drop this wretch off and avoid the disappointment of the Order of the Chain"
Blackjack points to the hanging man and wanders forward to expect "This isn't him is it?" he says with some concern.

GM Chyro |

Aid Ikit: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Sense motive: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (17) + 14 = 314d20 + 10 ⇒ (19, 17, 20, 9) + 10 = 75
Lucky rolls on their part.
Setare certainly puts up an air of arrogance, Chelish officials are known for, and Blackjack and Ikit talk business over etiquette. Yet, they don't quite buy it.
The guards murmer words of doubt, but in particular the dwarf near you.
"Yer makin' a half-decent attempt, but several things don't add up. No party from her Majistrix's forces are due to pick up that prisoner today. As keeper here, i would know. Teleportation has never been procedure, only ships come and go here. And visitors sure as heck only come out from the inside when one of us walk them out. I've never seen any of yer faces before."
He narrows eyes at Setare.
"So maybe, i aught be asking fer yer own names instead.", "And ye'd kindly be straight with me."
Angry dwarf look: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20, but his glare is not at all impressive to Setare.
That was but round 1. You can try again, of course, as you have 2 rounds. Though perhaps diplomacy or intimidate will work more favorable.

![]() |

Unnvar gets a frustrated looked on his face, Listen, I don't really care if you believe us or not. That pirate is coming with us. And you can either be alive or dead once we are gone. That's the only two options.

Blackjack almost chuckles when the Half-Orc lays it plain.
Blackjack just stares at the jailer "Well like my companion has said, we're no here to argue with you, we're here to collect this person and collect we will"
Aid intimidate - but frankly Blackjack hopes it all fails so he can fight with a bunch of Chels

![]() |

Setare now is almost pissed off.
“You dare to question my authority!? If you do mit immediately comply with orders and allow us to take Caradoc Alazario into our custody then you’ll regret this encounter for quite some time!!“ the changed Setare says with a stern look.
intimidate : 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (3) + 23 = 26

GM Chyro |

These dice rolls clearly want us to fight
Oh, comment of the conversation will make sure of that.
While he has his dogs and guards, the dwarf reconsiders the situation.
People somehow got in, and have the brass balls to demand things of him.
Setare's outburst, though, tips over the scales into professional anger.
"Authority? You dare speak of authority to me, you're a liar, and your compatriots are, by their comment, not legit either!"
Pointing his axe in your direction, he lets out a whistle, calling the dogs to attention, and barks an order to the men behind him.
"Show these unlawful intruders they are not welcome! Put em in the cells if they survive!"

Short of a call on whether it followed you or not, the roc would have remained on the lower level, yes. So calling it over is no issue. For the purpose of distance, the 2nd level lies 10 higher than the level your roc is at.

Setare hits the dwarf square in the jaw, giving him a momentary fuzzy feeling, and this, on top of the earlier (former passive) aggressive statements, prolongs his state of wariness of the group.
He is shaken for 4 rounds.
Unnvar outright butchers the dog with a single strike, making an upward slash that cuts it nigh in half from the head onwards.
Meanwhile, under an inspiring song in foreign tongue, Grunyak bestows a blessing upon the group, bolstering their skills in combat.

Blackjack, Ikit, Setare, what blessing of fervor bonuses will you take this round?

Botting.
Ikit moves to close the line between Serate and Unnvar.
Yellow dog makes a bite attempt at Unnvar.
Bite: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 141d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Purple 1 bites at Serate..
Bite: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 41d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4, but instead, its muzzle is deftly pushed aside, and it receives a knee to the chin, knocking it down immediately. Its head is left in an unnatural angle.....
Second purple dog takes its place, and tries as well.
Bite: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 61d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4, and likewise fails in being a proper guard dog.
Durgin (23nl, shaken 4 rounds) swings his axe at Dunnvar.

By map, Ikit is attacking green.
Green is jabbed with a rapier in rapid succession. He starts to wobble on his legs at the 2nd jab, and passes out after the third.
Orange lets out a comment;
"I'm not paid to suicide, and fighting on is. I surrender.", he lowers his arms, hoping for a positive outcome.
Unnvar, Setare

Setare knocks down red with the first punch, a punch so hard it makes him spin a full 360 before landing on the floor, unconscious.
The only target left is orange.....who gets a double wham to the face and takes a nap on the stone after the 2nd attack.
Combat is over.
The scene is quiet, apart from the rain and heavy wind.
Three guards and their superior on the floor, the 4th guard some 70 feet below....
And a man hanging from the gallows....

I'm back..just in time for the end of combat
Unnvar keeps his eye on the surrendered men. Leaving the hanging prisoner to others more capable of providing life saving magics if needed.
None of you makes a move. He says to the guards turned prisoners.

GM Chyro |

None of you makes a move.
None can, Setare took them down, all are KO on the floor.
5d20 + 6 ⇒ (5, 2, 19, 4, 9) + 6 = 45
DC 5, 7, 9, 11, 14.
The man hanging from the gallows was literally clinging to life.
The noose was not applied properly, and must have kept him dangling on the brink of consciousness.
He coughs for a minute, down on his knees, taking in oxygen he desperately needed. "You..*cough*...are a welcome sight..*cough*....for sore eyes.
Who may i..*cough*..be thanking for my regained freedom?"

Setare checks on all the guards to see that they are stable!!
She looks at the others with a pained expression on her face.
“The.. they were just doing their jo.. job … you didn’t have to hurt them so badly!!“ she says with a quivering voice.

"You..*cough*...are a welcome sight..*cough*....for sore eyes. Who may i..*cough*..be thanking for my regained freedom?"
"Captain Blackjack of The Raven and The Voracious, we're looking for Caradoc. Who are you and what brought you to the noose?"

“The.. they were just doing their jo.. job … you didn’t have to hurt them so badly!!“ she says with a quivering voice.
"And we're just doing ours. They didn't spare us the sharp points of their blades, nor did they surrender when they had the chance. If they did their job better than we did then they'd be stretching all our necks by tea time, right alongside this fellow on the gallows - I only feel bad about the dogs".

GM Chyro |

Captain Blackjack of The Raven and The Voracious, we're looking for Caradoc. Who are you and what brought you to the noose?"
"My name is Abasi, and some call me a freedom fighter.
People such as myself, whom the Chelish government can't silence, are sent here. I hope to release the people of Cheliax from their infernal bonds.""Caradoc? The fancy prisoner, that one. He doesn't rot down with the average prisoners. I don't know where his cell is, but if not down here, perhaps look in the upper levels."

![]() |

"That's a noble aim, slavery and bondage are abominations"
"We will try upstairs, this place has a lack of prisoners in general - are there many here? Either way you may as well come with us when we leave, if you stay around here you'll just be recaptured and the next people might be competent at tying knots... you any good on a ship?"
