Hari sees Betel's petal with a spark of recognition, while a crowd of students go about the smile at Hancock's dirt drawings.

Meanwhile Geltra, who has been examining the plaques around the room, interjects from her position near several plinths and displays in the corner of the main hall. She looks about 30-degrees to your left as the kobold says im glad you’re all actually really here. i cant make any sense of these plaques! theyve been separated from their displays, and the labels are very strange. could you give us a hand, since we all seem to be stuck here?

She lays the four plaques on the table and steps back. You all notice that Geltra seems more upset at the prospect of not finishing her assignment than by the disappearance of the residents of the lodge.

Looking over the four plaques, you all see that they seem to be far from Society-standard. Rather than informative labels noting the artifact and its historiography, each of the plaques is instead inscribed with a riddle. Plauqes posted to Slides

The four items on display are a yard-long spiral horn A narwhal horn Ahas can tell embellished with emeralds and rubies; a taxidermied owlbear posed threateningly by the door of the lodge whihc Betel recalls is apparantly the remains of Beaky III, a companion of Grand Prince Stavian I; a polished bronze spyglass; and a fist-sized lump of pitted silvery metal that Ada recognizes as a lump of the skymetal Siccatite

Ahas, knowing about the narwal horn embellished with gems and all, tries to communicate with Vim, trying to tell her that the yard-long spiral horn is a narwhal horn.

He tries to push some light objects close to her to give a sense of direction to point to the horn as he makes a writing on dusty coffeetable nearby to write at least the word narwhal. Maybe that way, Vim can easily recognize that the horn belongs to a narwhal.

Having been one of these 'nerds' Betel shot Hepcut a look before looking at the plaques.

It certainly seems obvious to me. she says. The Owlbear is Beaky the Third, the companion of Grand Prince Stavian the First. That matches with the information on Plaque 3.

Which means .... the narwhal horn goes with plaque 4. The spyglass is obviously Plaque 2 which leaves the meteorite as plaque 1

Vigilant Seal

Ada just intently stares at the rock. She says,"You know how much cool stuff I could do with that. Its either really hot or really cold. Its such an interesting item. All the experiments that could be done. All the learning that could be accomplished. And here we are trying to figure out what in blazes is going on with us being ghosts."

Upon contemplating all the riddles she asks Betel,"Ok. I get all the riddles but the one for beaky. What does it mean by can't make you honey or unlock a chest..."

The End Awakens | The Day the River Died

Geltra looks back and forth over the plaques in confusion, until she sees Ahas scribbling the word 'narwhal' in dust and shuffle a loose paper about by the horn. oh! thank you. i was never good with wordplay in taldane.

Following his lead, you can similarly slowly explain the remainign three objects to the rapt kobold. Even Ruffles seems to be less fidgety as Grelta puts a finger to her lips as she ponders what your explanations mean.

so, theres a rock and a horn and an owlbear and a spyglass. but if the owlbear was a friend of the prince... her eyes brighten as she leaps up in happiness then beaky must be the item with taldan history!

As Grelta seems excited that the first part of the class' assignment is complete, Vim speaks up. So, if our chaperones can see us - even if we can't see them which is weird but maybe normal for Pathfindering? - then I guess we're okay? But where is everyone else? the goblin looks around. Maybe we should go looking to find an adult who's actually here. Or at least we can complete the work they gave us so when they get back we'll be all good!

I don't know Tels says, a bit concerned. Didn't they tell us to stay together?
But also to do our homework Hari counters.
Alec stands up and stretches, agreeing with the half-elf. "We can do both I suppose. All the younglings can stay together in this foyer. A few of us can split to look around - in pairs" he says with a conciliatory gesture towards Tels. "If anyone finds anything or something goes wrong, yell out. It's not that big a building."
After a brief quick discussion, the rest of the students seem to agree. You see Geltra and Hari head towards the left wing, while Tels and Vim go ahead into the halls opposite the entrance. Alec meanwhile head to the right.

Hancock shakes his head as they split up to search, knowing full well that splitting the party always ends in disaster.

Nothing for it though. Hancock starts following Tels and Vim.

The End Awakens | The Day the River Died

Ah, splitting the party. Well, I suppose you can't give the students bad ideas if they can't see you :)

Hancock moves through the main hall after Tels and Vim, while Betel and Heput trail Hari and Grelta What about the rest of you - Ada and Ahas?

The kobold and half-elf lead their tail-ers into a conference room. A messy one by the looks of it: sheets of notes are splayed across the table haphazardly. Geltra approaches the table and cranes her neck up to see what's on it. no pathfinders here she sighs and none of these look like recipes or exercise diagrams. a lot of administration stuff, and theres something about a magic ritual. maybe - hey ruffles! the kobold cries as her pigeon squirms out of her sack and begins fluttering and tromping across the table, mussing with the papers as it does so.

We should probably leave it as it is then. Hair replies as Grelta works to get Ruffles under control. Exploring is one thing, but we shouldn't be snooping. They turn to continue moving on, with Grelta following shortly thereafter with her now re-caught bird. Continuing following them ASAP, or would you two like to look around the room yourselves a bit first?

---

Down the ways Hancock and Bruce move down some hallways and past a quiet open-air courtyard filled with tended topiaries and a burbling fountain as he follows his own targets. Eventually Tels and Vim open a door and wander into a large open space with padded floors, target dummies placed about, and racks of blunted weapons. The larger boy looks about "This most be a sparring room for the Pathfinders" he muses. "Still real empty though. I wonder where everyo-"

Tels Tels look, look there you gotta look! Vim's cries cut off her classmate as the goblin is hopping up and down and pointing at a window along the far wall. Tels and here are reflected back in the glass - and so are Hancock and Bruce! Sort of: the two of you can see yourselves in the mirror - and so apparently can Tels and Vim - but unlike them your reflections are hazy and indistinct, almost like shadows.

Shorter, stouter, is that you Hancock? Vim asks loudly, turning her head back and forth between the mirror and the general direction its showing you in. Despite her size her lung capacity is impressive as she keeps going at a rapid pace. If so that's great that's one thing sorted, one thing down! Oh, and if it is you you than you're the perfect person to be here because we're also supposed to be able to see some combat techniques of Pathfinders but there aren't any around here expect You're here sort of and maybe you could show off some of your moves to us because since you're a Pathfinder that would clearly mean they must be 'Pathfinder moves' right?

She looks back towards you eagerly as Tels gently puts a hand on her shoulder and motions for both of them to step back. Yeah, that could be good. But we should probably give them some room just to be safe, right?
If you want to demonstrate some different combat techniques, you could use Athletics checks, or regular Strikes.

At the mention of 'magic ritual' Betel has a look at the appropriate documents herself, hoping there might be a clue to what had happened. But, as the students move on, she sighs and continues to follow.

Vigilant Seal

Ada is going to follow Hancock. " I don't think you need help persay but there might be clues in this area," she says cautiously

The End Awakens | The Day the River Died

Betel takes a quick glance at the documents in the conference room. Skimming them, many seem to be related to notes and minutes of discussions of the Lodge's security procedures. The undine spies of sheet titled 'In Case of Planar Emergency' as the students begin to move out. As this is very sandboxy, and a sandbox where there are many NPCs doing their own things, I'm happy to mild retcon Betel can look at the papers at the same time Grelta was (some leniency given the nature of PbP as a format for this one). That parchment has been added as a Slide.

As Ada moves after Hancock, she sees her shadow also appear in the sparring room's mirror, much to Vim's delight. Oh, another person. If there's three of you that means there's likely all of you that way, right? Which one are you? And do you have any techniques you could show us?
Ada (or Hancock) could try to further pass a message to them as normal using the Communicate with the Beyond activity. She can also try to demonstrate a combat technique in the mirror just like Hancock, with Athletics, a Strike, or a spell attack

He motions for Vim to stay here, then goes into the hallway and calls down: Hari! Grelta! Alec! we found the chaperones, sort of! They want us to all come in the sparring spot back here!

She then proceeds to fire her gun at the nearest target.

attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16

The End Awakens | The Day the River Died

You're not sure exactly how much of the nuances of Ada's explaantion of the tech got through, but the four students react with awe as the elder student's shadowy reflection aims and fires his weapon to strike a dummy. Hari and Grelta scribble furious notes while you cathc Vim's gaze lingering on the reflection of the gun itself.

Oh, those Alkenstar guns really are much cooler than the old crossbows. See the smoke coming out there? I bet some of Vig's cousins to the north won't be able to wait until they get their hands on one of those; they're real big into smoke but this seems much more contained and a lot safer.

And whoops, realize is missed/mis-interpreted Hancock above

While the rest seem entranced by the strange gun's demonstration, Tels looks on with keen interest at Hancock's physical skills. You hear him talk to himself under his breath as his eyes lock onto the barbarian's partial image: Man that arm fling motion really uses his whole body for leverage. I bet something like that would be a neat trick on the ruk field.

Anyone else wish to demonstrate their combat prowess?

Tels and Vim *ooh* and *aah again as Hepcut makes her own demonstrations, while Hari takes careful notes of your forms.

As you see yourselves again, still vaguely in the mirror, you also begin to notice a strange rippling effect at the glass' edges. None of the children appear to notice, but the mirror shifts and warps as other indistinct wiggly lines of shadows start flowing around your reflections. Then in the blink of an eye those four reflections vanish from the mirror - and four tiny incandescent serpents appear slithering about in the air in the sparring room!

The worm-thing’s bruised scales seem to heal slightly as it swims through the air towards your group’s own scaled-one: Ahas! Slithering about the Navajo, it slaps out at the Pathfinder with its tail before nibbling at him too.

So Pathfinder rules move 0 or less damage (from low Str scores such as here) to ‘1’ so that’s 1 +3 chaotic x 2 from the crit, then 1+1 from the bite.

    Exploit Vulnerability of Red Thing with Esoteric Lore: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

He then draws his battle axe weapon to slice the Red Thing!

Do I need to use a different weapon to attack or the weapon implement can also be used?

    Longsword (if allowed) or Battle Axe Attack vs Red Thing: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Weapon Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 slashing damage plus creature's weakness (if Exploit Vulnerability is successful), or 2 additional damage as weakness (from Personal Antithesis if the creature has no weakness)

If weapon implement can be used to Strike: ◆ Draw weapon implement, ◆ Exploit Vulnerability, ◆ Strike with weapon implement

If weapon implement cannot be used to Strike and costs an action to draw: ◆ Draw weapon implement, ◆ Exploit Vulnerability, ◆ Draw battleaxe weapon

The End Awakens | The Day the River Died

Given you all were demonstrating some combat techniques, it makes sense your weapon would have been out Ahas
And you can typically use a weapon implement as your weapon (unless for whatever reason you're using a fragile antique or something, but that's more a flavor choice than anything required)

    GM:
    1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

Ahas initially has trouble focusing on what the thing assaulting him is as its tail has caused his mind to get a bit cloudy. But as he fixates on it the nagaji finally realizes these things are proteans! Voidworms to be precise: the most minor of these chaotic outsiders who nevertheless share their kinds' resistance to precision strikes and the ability to shift their anatomy to resist certain energies if struck by them. no Weaknesses

Trying to chant orderly mantras as he swings to push back against the worms, Ahas's empowered swing unfortunately misses. Exploit Vulnerability would have been 2 lower from the Stupefied, but still is a Success. Betel's blast though annihilates her target to send it splatting into the far wall defensive magics be damned!

Apparantly liking the taste, the voidworm (who's scales again heal slightly) menacing Ahas tries to get some more chunks of snake-person! It's left hungry this time however as Ahas deflects and dodges its love bites.

The End Awakens | The Day the River Died

An angry Hancock moves away from his attacker and strikes out at the vaguely-yellow-tinged one. His first maul smacks is badly, though the second misses the tiny target. You all notice as the maul strikes is and electricity splays across the voidworms scales is seems burned, but then the scales' hue seems to shift and change slightly.

Perhaps reeling from the hit, perhaps just looking for some wild variety, who knows? Either way it floats away from Hancock and instead after Ada. Healing slightly as it goes, the worm slaps at her with its tail before biting at the student's neck. Not especially well though, with either.

The End Awakens | The Day the River Died

Even as Tels seems confused by Ada’s actions - She’s shooting at her own face now? Is this a ‘things not to do demonstration? – her unexpected theological challenge distracts her target and the ciritically aimed shot finishes off the injured worm.

Nearby Hepcut seems a bit frustrated as her tusks again miss their mark. But it was just a feitn after all: her fist then comes up from above to smack down her target though the stylistic finisher doesn’t seem to be quite as effective as she’d expected (they has some Precision resistance)

With the orc then successfully tumbling away from it so get panache back, her friend decides variety is the spice of life. In both food and action it turns out as the protean tries to bite Hancock before slapping him.

Both fail. I suppose consistency is underrated.

The End Awakens | The Day the River Died

I think he's holding out something! Tels says as he looks at Hancock in the mirror. You can see your own reflection in there just like the students can - but your own outline remains blurry and indistinct. It's clear you're holding a paper of sign up, but the details on it are illegible.

Oh! Holding things! Is this part of the training? Or are they trying to communicate something to us? Maybe if we try back... Vim looks around the space animatedly. Seeing a blunted training sword, she grabs it and then - looking back and forth between the mirror and the space where Hancock seems to be - tries holding it out towards him. As the goblin does, the blade itself starts to shimmer and shine with a strange glow to your eyes.
