"She wanted . . . everything!" sobs Illia. "How many entrants . . . what they could do . . . how far ahead I was . . .I don't know what she is, but she's evil!"

![]() |

Flyn steadies Ilia, guiding her to sit at one of the desks. Then while the others question her, he looks for any signs of other creatures that might have been in this room previously as well as keeping eyes and ears open should this Marijkul, or her minions, return…

Helgar smiles remembering.
"What a fascinating couple and they are paired together for power."
"The female, is a skilled torturer, notorious really even for a gylou. The fact that she paired up with a male is really interesting as she generally hates males on sight."
"At any rate we should get going and try not to use their names if we can help it. I would love to interview the two of them. It would make a lovely lesson for the extra-planar class I am teaching now."
He turns to the sobbing woman not insensitive to her pain and tries to console her.
"Not to worry. We will not let her hurt you again. I am sure that Flyn will put a few arrows straight into her if she gets too close and the rest of us are not without our own resources."
32 Diplomacy on a take 10 (including the planar penalty of -2).

GM Jhaeman |

Illia nods gratefully at Helgar's promise. It seems clear that however tough she was on the outside, her will has been broken by her time in this demiplane.

![]() |

”We will be right back, milady. We are hopefully going to find your torturer and teach them a lesson,” Shel advises.

![]() |

Flyn nods at Helgar. ”Aye, a skilled torturer indeed…a single, human-sized creature did this…and not all of the blood here is fresh…this place has been used as a torture chamber for a long time, methinks…”
Looking to Ilia, he adds, ”…and aye, m’Lady, we will protect you…”
Turning to his friends, he queries, ”Where to next?”

![]() |

"Check every room as we do not know which way will lead us home. We should start with the room across from us."
39 Perception on a take 10 (including -2 planar penalty) for traps around and on the door.
X marks the spot on the map

![]() |

Can you defend yourself, Illia? Do you need a weapon?
There was a pack mentioned, I assume she recovers it if it is hers?

![]() |

Helgar nods at Illia.
"You can stay with us then if you like as long as you agree to no claim on the prize money when we get out and rest assured that we will find a way to get back home. Bring your pack along I see it under the table."
"Flyn, I do not see any traps on the next door."

![]() |

”Lets move out then. I’ll be sure to keep an eye on Illia and make her she’s okay while we proceed.”

GM Jhaeman |

Illia nods and rushes over to the pack, outfitting herself with a shortsword, leather armor, a couple of wands.
When the door across the hall is opened, the Pathfinders see a large library. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves cover the walls of this dimly lit library, with shorter stacks creating small dividers in the room’s interior. A reading table sits empty and unused in the library’s center.
Bizarrely, the shelves are a mass of fluttering pages, and books rearrange themselves and fly across the room constantly! A half-crazed man is feverishly running back and forth, chasing the books.
I'll squeeze a pic of this guy on Slide # 5.

![]() |

Diplomacy 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (16) + 21 = 37
”Would you like some help chasing down those books? We might be able to assist you,” Shel calls out; not wanting to threaten or scare the man.

![]() |

”Tell us what it looks like and we will do our best to help!”

![]() |

Ah, it seems we have entered somebody's personal Hell. What could be worse for a wizard than to be surrounded by books, yet be unable to lay one's hands upon one's spellbook?
Quenly peers into the library with a Detect Magic spell.
spellcraft: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18 +2 vs magic items

GM Jhaeman |

"It's magnificent! Bound in angel-skin leather with Terentius' Grimoire etched on the spine! Hurry! Maybe that's it!" The frantic man rushes to one shelf only to have the books fly into the air and land atop a higher one.

![]() |

know.history, penalties: 1d20 + 26 - 4 ⇒ (13) + 26 - 4 = 35
You are Terentius then? The Breaching Festival entrant. Are you aware of the length of time that you have been here? What have you learned of this place?

GM Jhaeman |

"Shut up! Find the book! Or are you the ones who have hidden it?" The man turns with crazed eyes and looks you all over with a paranoid gaze before returning to his search. Books flap through the air and constantly rearrange themselves. Some seem to fly just out Terentius' reach, as if mocking him.

![]() |

This man is clearly dangerous Quenly tells the pathfinders. A mage driven close to madness, perhaps beyond. If the Hellscape is built only to thwart Terentius, we may be able to assist him. If not, he is liable to think us his tormenters.
We have just arrived here, but as my colleague says we will try to help he tells the tortured wizard.
Quenly starts looking for the grimoire.

"Maybe working together we can find this man's book? There does seem to be quite a few contestants stuck in this demi-plane."

Looks like the site ate my last post from yesterday…
Upon entering the room, Flyn casts detect magic…
Spellcraft+free inspiration: 1d20 + 8 + 1d6 ⇒ (13) + 8 + (4) = 25
I’m assuming I can look at Quenly’s spoiler as I’d detect the same…
”That’s odd…I don’t detect any magic moving these books around, just some on Terrentius…if it not be spells causing these books to fly back and forth, what else could it be?”

![]() |

Shel tries to find the book as well.
Perception with penalty 1d20 + 21 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 21 - 4 = 26

![]() |

Flyn shrugs. ”This man has been looking for at least a year…if he hasn’t found by now, I doubt we can…if this is a model of Hell, this seems like a never ending punishment to torment this fellow…perhaps we should move on? Mayhap we can better relieve his torment by finding and killing the devil responsible for it…”

![]() |

Shel shrugs her shoulders. ”if you want to move on, that’s fine with me. If we kill his tormenter, you might be right. It might relieve his torment somehow…”

![]() |

Helgar shakes his head at the party so willing to give up so easily.
"We have only looked for a moment. Everyone work with me and let us see if we ca find it."
Perception,includes planar penalty: 1d20 + 29 ⇒ (15) + 29 = 44
That might be enough but aids would be nice. :)

![]() |

Flyn shrugs. ”This guy’s been looking at least a year, maybe more since I don’t know how time passes on this plane, and only he knows what it looks like…our chances are slim to none…but if you insist…”
Aid Flint (Perception): 1d20 + 27 ⇒ (8) + 27 = 35
…his heart not in it, Flyn assists in trying to find the spell book…

GM Jhaeman |

The Pathfinders continue the search, but have no luck. Suddenly, Terentius turns and shouts, spittle dripping down his chin: "You're helping them hide it from me! I'll force you to tell me where it is!" With arcane gestures and guttural words, the deranged man conjures a shimmering sphere around himself!
We will now progress to Initiative.

GM Jhaeman |

Terentius

Initiative (Quenly): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24

Helgar easily (automatically) recognises the spell as it is being cast even with the great evilness of the plane impeding his thoughts.
Spellcraft,Heroism,Planar Penalty: 1d20 + 19 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 19 + 2 - 2 = 39
"That is a Resilient Sphere. Quenly can you try to dispel it?"
Helgar only has one casting of Displ Magic and he might need it to cast on Quenly going forward.

![]() |

This was predictable. Let us test our magic. Is that not the nature of the contest, after all?
Quenly targets the sphere with a Dispel...

Quenly's Dragon |

Meanwhile the little dragon retreats to a safer location (it hopes).
Moved to the doorway.

![]() |

Shel pauses seeing if the magical shield would be brought down by her magic using friends.

GM Jhaeman |

Quenly's magic isn't strong enough to bring down Terentius' defense!
Helgar, Shel, and Flyn are up.

![]() |

I have referenced the dragon's blindsense on multiple occasions in Discussion, as well as in Gameplay, in addition to the alias' banner.
We might still end up in combat, but clearly there was ample opportunity to address the actual situation.

![]() |

No worries GM. To err is human. (To really foul things up requires a computer).

![]() |

”Lets keep going! This is a wild place so let’s keep trying to get out of here.”

GM Jhaeman |

With the distractions gone, Helgar does a thorough search of the room.
@Everyone: Ok, where to next? There are doors across the hall and doors at the end of the hall.

![]() |

Flyn shakes his head at the fallen Terrentius. ”What a waste…we should’ve just left the room, he was obviously agitated and borderline bats…his blood is on our hands…”
The Elf leaves the room and checks out the door across the hall…

After examining the wizard's loot Helgar has a look for traps on the door across the hall.
39 Perception on a take 10 with planar penalty applied.

GM Jhaeman |

After Helgar and Flyn pronounce the door across the hall free of traps, they open it to reveal what must be a laboratory. The overpowering stench of potent alchemical and arcane reagants fills the room, the cluttered surfaces of which are piled high with half-full beakers, alembics, and retorts, each holding what appears to be a different bodily fluid.
Standing calmly at the center of the room is a glamorous and delicate human female.
"Ah, you must be the other competitors I heard about. Now, tell me, why should I let you live?"

![]() |

Quenly can assist in examining the magic items - he auto-passes Aid Another checks to help Helgar.
In the alchemy lab...
You are outnumbered, and cornered. And if you are aware of where you really are, then you stand in need of allies rather than more enemies.
Quenly answers the woman.
Quenly's telepathy is normally broadcast to everyone, by the way. I'll Spoiler, or otherwise indicate, when this is not the case.
