GM_DBH's Curse Of The Crimson Throne

Game Master DBH

The city of Korvosa has dark and deadly secrets. Those secrets are coming home to roost as some unlikely heroes are drawn into the underbelly in search of answers to their pasts.

Plague has come to Korvosa, and while the new queen and her advisors bicker over how to address the calamity, fear takes hold on the streets.
As the number of sick folk grows, people take desperate measures to avoid the plague, shutting themselves within their homes, shunning the infected, and even seeking escape from the city.
The disease is prevalent in Korvosa’s most impoverished areas, particularly Old Korvosa—blister-faced beggars and hacking common folk are visible on every corner.

The commander explains further at Kayleigh's request. But the task doesn't change.

Being sent to watch an execution seemed like regular guardsmen duties, which they were not. Brig was trying to help people. So on top of the task being mundane, she failed to see how watching someone be killed did that at all.

She crossed her big arms and looked upset, but doesn't comment on the task further. The blacksmith did tell the cleric "I've read about potions that can do that, but I've never studied them enough to do so."

No disguise self in her formula book.

The execution it is not an affair to be missed. The toast of Korvosa is in attendance in garish gowns, fine capes, and enough jewels to blind the
common citizen. The overall feel of the event is that of a grand ball or party, not an assassin’s public execution.

Queen Ileosa emerges amid a great flourish and pomp as heralds announce her arrival with a fanfare of music and drums. She has fully accepted the mantle of sole monarch now, and carries herself with poise, style, and grace. She wears a green and white silk dress worth thousands of gold coins and is attended by a small army of striking guards.

Chief among these is Sabina, although she is not immediately recognizable, clad as she is in a striking brand-new suit of full-plate armor with a closed helm sporting a flowing crimson plume.

Ileosa takes her seat in a high throne-like chair at one end of the public courtyard, while a guillotine stands ominously at the other. The executioner is a towering, muscular man wearing an executioner’s hood and idly holding an immense axe.

Whispers ripple through the assemblage—admiring comments on the queen’s attire, predictions regarding how the traitor Trinia might comport herself, speculations on the identity of the armored guardian who stands at Ileosa’s side?

Then, as an ominous drum beating begins, the gawkers fall silent. The drum sets the pace for Trinia’s procession to the executioner’s block. As they reach the block, a guard removes Trinia’s shackles and the hood, revealing a very frightened woman who bravely holds back her tears.

Trinia is led up to stand before the guillotine, her arms bound behind her back by a leather cord as Queen Ileosa addresses the crowd, “Fellow Korvosans! You have suffered greatly these past few weeks. Homes have burned, family members have died, and fortunes have been lost. I feel your suffering, for not only have I lost a beloved husband, but with each act of anarchy that followed, my heart bled more. This has been a trying time for us, yet the torment is at an end. Before you is the source of your anguish and pain. Do not be deceived by this murderer’s timid nature—she is a black-hearted assassin. I offer you her death as a salve against the hatred and hurt you have suffered. “And so, without further delay, let us usher in this new dawn with justice! OFF WITH HER HEAD!”

Yet just before the executioner forces Trinia into the guillotine, the man cries out in pain as a hurled dagger embeds itself in the back of his hand!

As the executioner’s grip on Trinia falters, a cry echoes through the crowded courtyard: “By the gods! It’s Blackjack!”

An instant later, a man dressed in a hooded cloak and black mask springs up to Trinia’s side. Using a dagger, he cuts the bonds on Trinia’s wrists and then throws the same dagger down to pin the executioner’s left foot to the wood platform.

He then turns to address the shocked crowd. “Yes indeed, my queen! Let us usher in justice, but let that be justice for Korvosa, not this shambles you call a monarchy! Long live Korvosa! Down with the queen!”

Blackjack’s words cause the crowd to erupt into action. Some demand that he release the assassin while others call for the queen’s resignation.

Queen Ileosa stands stunned for a few moments, whispers something to Sabina, and then quickly turns to flee into Castle Korvosa, Sabina and a dozen guards behind her to cover her retreat.

The remaining guards in the courtyard move to apprehend Blackjack, but the gathered nobles, thirsty for blood, make it difficult to move. At the same time, the executioner recovers from his wounds and lifts his axe over Blackjack, who seems to have momentarily forgotten the man in his apparent delight at having forced the queen to flee.

What is everyone doing as things go crazy?

This is the first time in her life that Kayleigh's actually seen the Queen, and the sight leaves her breathless. She must be the most beautiful person in the city...the country...maybe even the world!

The Queen's gown also hypnotizes the young Milanite, who has been wearing clothing only a step or two up from rags since the night she'd lost her parents. A blush of shame briefly crosses her face as she realizes how utterly inferior she must seem when compared against the striking monarch...even though the clothes she bought for her disguise are clean and likely above average when compared to most of the wardrobe she currently owns.

When Trinia is dragged to the execution platform, another blush of shame passes over Kayleigh's face as she remembers how suspicious she'd been at first of the young artist. Now, facing certain death more stoically than she'd be able to, the priestess again turns her attention to the radiant Queen. She can't be evil! the girl tells herself, and she finds herself believing that right up 'til the Queen yells, "OFF WITH HER HEAD!"

The dramatic arrival of a would-be rescuer draws Kayleigh's attention this time. She's heard nothing (or next to it) about this Blackjack figure the crowd seems awed by. In her mind, Kayleigh admires the figure's bravado and style--two traits she herself lacks. She stands enthralled by the unlikely drama, just another bystander in the crowd. When the executioner regains his senses and seems to be about to strike down this Blackjack fellow, Kayleigh's mind cycles through the prepared spells she still has after the venture into the Dead Warrens. Nothing! If someone's going to shout a timely warning, it's too late for it to be her.

It is truly a lovely 'nothing' post though :)

Brig doesn't know what is going on anymore than the other on lookers, though the 'act' as the queen put it, the fear and dismay the young woman is radiating, seems real enough the blacksmith wants to save her.

Blackjack was a legend, one she had grown up on over and over, and one that had sparked the kernel in her heart to take up vigilantism despite her own lawful nature.

The executioner sneaking up behind a childhood hero is too much, so she roars "Black hooded Coward!" picking up one of her sling stones, she chucks it with all her might at the man's head.

Standing among the crowds waiting for the execution Nethen feels nothing but loathing for the queen and her sycophants. The execution, and the trial no doubt, is a sham - a show designed to prevent the masses from realising that this is a shameless grab for power by Ileosa. He's seen the same thing play out time and again in the gangs of The Shingles, albeit with less silk and jewelry than this one.

Just as the queen finishes her speech, with his teeth gritted and knuckles white as he holds himself in check, Nethen sees the executioner fall and the cloaked figure emerge onto the stage.

Knowledge (local): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32

The legend of Blackjack - the vigilante standing up for the common people of Korvosa - formed a large part of Nethen's childhood, where he and his friends would race across the rooves wielding sticks as swords and pretending to save each other from tyrants and gangsters. Seeing the legendary figure in the flesh stirs him to action. He pulls the hood of his duster over his head, releases his whip from his belt, and moves towards the stage to defend Trinia and help Blackjack.

Are you sure you want to do that?

While her stone doesn't do more than flop to the ground in front of her, Brigita's words draw Blackjacks' attention. He ducks the Executioners swing mockingly and drags Trina to the courtyard wall beside him.

Using a hanging banner he quickly scales the wall with Trina, pausing at the top, backlit by the sun he drinks a potion, bows to the crowd, and nods to the party with respect?

He and Trina then jump off the wall and vanish into the city while chaos erupts in the courtyard.

Luckily it is mostly noise. Blackjack is a Korvosian icon and his opposing the Queen means the feeling against her is strong. Everyone is waiting to see what happens next.

The crowd slowly disperses in groups, arguing their various beliefs loudly, with much gesturing.

Trina escaped. The Queen isn't coming out of her castle. You can return to Cressida and report. :)

Kayleigh resists the healer's compulsion she instinctively feels to heal the executioner's skewered foot. The streets tense up in response to the dramatic events, but then the crowd disperses (mostly) peacefully.

On the walk back to report to Field Marshal Kroft, Kayleigh decides to try to lighten the mood by playfully teasing the new gal a bit.

Not only had Ariadne grown up with stories of the legendary Blackjack, hero of the people, she'd actually seen him once. From an alley, she'd looked up to see him leaping across the gap between rooftops with guards in pursuit, (one of whom didn't manage to make it across).

Sher grins at Kayleigh's jest, nodding along. "Worked out though, since we weren't seen actively opposing the guard. In all the chaos...stuff happens." she says with a shrug,

Are you sure you want to do that?

Things quieten down after your return and report. The city is almost waiting, with a sullen mood ready to erupt again when something triggers it.

After a quiet week when you can recover from your hard work and make arrangements for your dependents Marshall Croft calls you to a private meeting.

Cressida has some disturbing news. She’s received advance word that Queen Ileosa intends to restructure several elements of the city’s military organizations.

Rumors of disbanding some or even all of the groups in favor of new organizations are on many lips, and with events running the way they have of late, Kroft is increasingly afraid that Queen Ileosa’s inexperience as a ruler is going to result in some poor or even disastrous
decisions.

The Field Marshal doesn’t go as far as to suggest malice or evil fuels Ileosa’s plans, but to her mind, ignorance and naivete can be almost as dangerous. In particular, the way Ileosa handled Trinia has left Kroft disturbed and worried for the city’s future.

She warns you that events are moving swiftly in Korvosa, and in a direction that makes her nervous. More importantly, she reveals to you that her ability to finance their missions will almost certainly be diminished as the new leadership realigns and restructures elements of the Korvosan Guard.

Kroft even worries that her position as Field Marshal may be in jeopardy. Her goal at this point is to not make waves and to cling to her post as tenaciously as possible so she’ll remain in a position to protect and represent the men and women of the Guard she’s grown to trust and feel responsible for.

All of this is her way of informing you that, for all of their best interests, you should no longer consider yourselves official agents of the Korvosan Guard.

She hopes you will continue to fight for Korvosa and her citizens, and promises to aid them as she can, but she can foresee a time in the near future when the power of the Korvosan Guard may not be enough to protect those who serve the city.

She doesn’t yet use words like “revolution,” but the implication is clear to you that having a group of specialists like you on hand to help protect
Korvosa from itself may mean the difference between life and death for the city.

In any event, Kroft does ask where you will be staying in Korvosa, and how she can contact you if she has an opportunity for you. She doesn’t need your aid currently, but imagines it won’t be long before their
services will be required.

Time to find a base and plan your next steps. The pot is simmering and things will soon become hotter.

Ariadne listens intently as Kroft lays out the current situation, and her concerns for the fate of the Guard. Given the training she'd abandoned, and her recognition of a few of those she'd trained with among the Queen's personal Honor Guard, she has a terrifying suspicion of the direction in which things might be headed. (Grey Maiden Initiate feat)

"The city is going to need people like you who have the best interests of the people at heart more than ever, Field Commander. I think I can speak for all of us that we'll be ready to help protect those that need protecting the most...from whatever or whoever might cause them the most harm." she says stoically.

Looking to her companions as the topic of where they might be found or where they could operate from, she shrugs. "Zellara's place is still available. It's small, but I've been going by and keeping the place up. Just felt like something I should do, y'know?"

Nonetheless, Kayleigh asks who this Zellara person is or was. When she gets the full odd tale, she looks at Ariadne with concern and maybe even a little fear, the first time she's shown any emotion other than admiration for her childhood savior. "Um...I did mention that my positive energy channels have no effect against the undead, right?" she asks nervously. "And you want to move into a place haunted by a ghost?"

Reaching into her travel pack, Ariadne retrieves a worn harrow deck, the card frames gilded in silver so that they sparkle and flash under the lighting of the room. Walking over to a small side table, she sets the cards face down on the table with an almost ritual care.

Brig had work to do. Her evening activities were her own, skulking the streets to hope to save a person here and there. Her miniscule time as an ally to the guard was the same, though it had been fury and chaos in comparison, and the monsters on such a different scale.

Her days though belonged to metal. Not glistening silver swords or layered steel armor. Blacksmiths are practical, not fanciful. So her days consisted of sharpening kitchen knives and making nails. Mostly.

But once work was over, she moved in.

With the hint of embarrassment in her cheeks, she moved into Ariadne's communal place. Lugging in one crate of tools, hammers, tongs, aprons. And then another of apparatuses, beakers, chemicals, and complicated bits. Another crate of books, mostly medical journals.

The last two things she brings in, is her personal effects, a bit of clothes, hygiene related objects, and a memento or two. And a chest, sealed with a heavy lock, which she treats with more care than any of her other belongings, which is saying something since the tools, book, and apparatuses were like precious treasures to her.

"Sorry, there is so much." she ran her calloused hand over her brown hair, the embarrassment finally lost to the exertion of the move thankfully.

--------

Her days are still spent at work, unless there is something the city needs, but she always returns with something to fix a need in the house. New hinges for the cabinets, a new lock for the door, brackets here and there, and plenty of nails.

All make sense to her... but a ghost. She looks a tad ashen at the idea, but gulps and stands next to Kayleigh, her big arms crossed tight around her like a shield.

The moment Ariadne touches the Harrow deck it flies from her hands, hovering over the table and shuffling itself before laying out the cards in a Harrow reading?

The three cards that tell of the past all speak of brushes with disease, sickness, and death you have experienced in your time.

The three that speak of the present all relate to the feeling of general unease in the city. Telling you that the city is poised dangerously.

The cards representing the future get grim: the cards speak dire warnings, mass graves, undeath, rot and decay, birds feasting upon the dead, and beautiful women with ashen skin and blank faces.

Zellera Esmeranda's spirit appears, she bows politely to the new members of the group Kayleigh & Brigita, while smiling warmly at Ariadne, Vedika & Nethen.

She gestures to cards, especially the ones the show the future.

What is your response? Remember that Zellera can't speak to you directly. She is bound the the Harrow deck.

Kayleigh returns the spirit's bow with one of her own, though it's clear from the expression on her face that she's still nervous. She takes a closer look at the Harrow cards Zellara motioned toward.

"She must communicate through the cards," says Vedika. "You can ask her questions or trade pleasantries, but she can only answer by showing you a card, and it's up to you to interpret the meaning."

Brig takes it all in, and finally manages to unfold her arms, "I'm Brigita Ungurlan, Mam." she doesn't know what else to say, pleasure to meet you seems wrong here. So she looks back to the cards "You're telling us some really bad stuff is coming. Any clue on how to stop any of it?"

Are you sure you want to do that?

Zellera indicates the card that shows birds feasting on the dead. It is something to come but she seems to want you to remember this card.

The other card that sparks something in your minds is the card that representing beautiful young women with ashen skin and blank faces.

You recall that Ileosa's bodyguard Sabina appeared in public for the first time clad in a remarkable suit of exquisitely fashioned full-plate armor.

With its red plume and crimson highlights, the armor serves as protection as much as it does a uniform, and although most gossip in the days that
followed focused on Blackjack’s daring rescue, not a few tongues wagged about the mysterious figure at the queen’s side.

Sabina represents the Gray Maidens, a military group created by Queen Ileosa and loyal only to her that serves increasingly as both a royal guard and city enforcers.

Zellera looks to the door and then nods goodbye, fading from view as there is a knock on your door.

When you open the door you find a typical street urchin, he looks at you all cheekily and holds out a hand with a folded piece of paper. "Letter for you folks." He states, holding out an opened hand as well. Clearly expecting a coin from you in exchange for his delivery.

Kayleigh looks up from perusing her copy of The Light of Hope, the holy text of devout followers of Milani. She currently sits in the most out-of-the-way corner of the small abode, reading courtesy of a light spell she's cast on a copper coin. When Ariadne finishes reading the missive and hands it to Kayleigh, the cleric looks it over and considers the words. She frowns before handing it back to Ariadne.

"I was wondering how Vencarlo knew we were here...but Field Marshal Kroft likely told him," she theorizes. "Although...maybe we shouldn't assume that--he could be a stalker!"

Realizing that Brigita hasn't yet met the fencing master, Kayleigh expounds a bit. "He's an older gentleman--older than us, anyways--who has an eye for the ladies. Just an eye--no hands, except for when he kissed the back of our hands."

Kayleigh is surprised to feel herself blushing at the memory. She hands Brigita the note and quickly returns to the corner and her book.

The magus considers for a moment. "It's possible;e this is code...he might not feel safe putting the reason he really wants to meet in a written message given the tone of things right now."

As mentioned in the note, Orisini Academy is located at 16 Hillcrest Street, near the center of Old Korvosa. Travelling through the streets no one troubles your clearly competent and well-armed group.

You can feel the restless undertone to the city however, people are on edge and waiting the next eruption. They gather in groups and whisper the latest rumors to each other. Glancing suspiciously at strangers and other by-passers.

A sign hanging from the front door of the academy reads, “Classes Cancelled Today.” A few moments after you arrive, regardless of whether you knock on the academy’s front door, a serious-looking Vencarlo appears and ushers you inside.

After he politely offers you tea and introduces himself to the new member of your group he thanks you all for responding to his cryptic note. He explains in hushed tones that he has an important task for you, one that becomes obvious when he calls another guest into the room: Trinia Sabor.

Wearing simple traveling clothes, the alleged assassin holds a wide-brimmed rider’s hat and a wig of long red curls, gifts from Orisini to use in her disguise. Trinia appears nervous and excited, and upon sighting the party she smiles, saying, “Sorry about the trouble I gave you in the Shingles a few weeks ago.” Vencarlo then asks you guests to be seated, but remains standing as he speaks.

Before we get to Vencarlo's speech do you want to say or do anything?

Kayleigh is shocked when Trinia joins the gathering. After hearing the young woman's apology, Kayleigh strategically positions herself between the rescued woman and Vedika...just in case the latter still holds a grudge for the near-fatal fall suffered during the chase through the Shingles.
