When they retreat to a place they can speak privately, Zhandar takes a look at the flayleaf crown and confirms Mila's findings (Profession: Herbalism, take 10: 22). "It's mildly addictive and dulls the senses," she mutters, "But can help steel the mind against enchantment and fatigue. I would say it is mostly harmless, unless it has some other use that I do not understand. I wonder if Kyle was also chosen to wear the crown? It might be worth asking some of the other townspeople who might remember, since the mayor is so slippery."

She also relates her uncomfortable instincts when speaking with the tiefling with the pastries. "It is not evidence of wrongdoing, but I had a sense that the woman was angry that I was asking about Kyle, and that she knew what had happened to him. Also, she didn't seem to care that we were investigating, as if she didn't think that whatever we discovered would matter. It chilled my spine, as I got the notion that she expected us to disappear in much the same way." She bares her teeth. "Could be I'm imagining things, of course. But the way the mayor reacted seemed to confirm my suspicion that something is going on. He is good at blustering and lying, that much seems certain."

She adopts a crafty expression (which she is unable to do subtly). "I have prepared a spell that will summon insects and send them to investigate a building, to report on the structure and hazards that might be found within. Would anyone object if I sent them to pore over the mayor's house? It will take several hours, but when they return we might learn the approximate layout of the manor and if there are any secret rooms, traps, or alarms."

Before they head out, she fills her canteen, and then mixes some herbs and casts a spell on the water within. The water changes into a clear, red liquid. "Drink this," she suggests. "It will heighten our intellects and sharpen our senses." She also casts another spell on herself. She casts tears to wine, which gives everyone a +2 enhancement bonus to all Int- and Wis-based checks, and heightened awareness on herself, giving her a +2 competence bonus to Perception and Knowledges. Unless anyone objects, she will cast insect scouts on her way to the stables, directing the insects to explore the mayor's home.

When they arrive at the barn, she glares furiously at the carnage, trying to determine at a glance how long the animals have been dead, what might have killed them, and if there are signs of any other animals. "That bastard," she swears quietly. "He must have known this is what we would find here. Beware!"

It’s unfortunately hard to tell what killed the animals at this distance, but Zhandar can tell that the calf and its mother are the ‘freshest’ of the corpses in this Rajuna-titled abattoir. The horses look to have been dead for a week or more, but the cows only a few days at most.

Absolutely disgusted by the stench of the place Park holds everyone at the door. "Whatever killed these might still be inside. Everyone quiet and listen for a moment. Is there anything alive that we might save? If not, I think we should just close the door. And tomorrow we ask the mayor why this place hasn't been torched!"

Doesn't look like anything is alive in there besides the hundreds of insects crawling across the bodies and flying in the air, although Park does spot a ladder in the northwest corner leading up to the second level. The middle part of the building is actually open, a few crossbeams making up the support above the stables along the northern wall.

Black circle on the ladder, the red rectangle is the part that is open up to the second floor. You can see the rafter on the second map.

Sorry, been dead tired the last few days!

Mila is wide-eyed at all of Zhandar's tricks, duly impressed. "You can tell insects what to do? Holy hosts-- yeah, do that!"

Mila doesn't say anything right away once the stables are opened-- she's trying not to gag. One hand over her mouth, then pulling up the front of her shirt to cover her nose.

"Gods," she manages after a bit, as the urge to retch subsides a little. "What... why.... this don't make any sense...."

Straightening back up, she looks, not into the stable itself, but back behind them.

"Why would they send us on here knowing what we'd find?? Some of those animals been dead a while-- folk had to know that. What's the point of sendin' us in here if they're tryin' to keep stuff hid from us? Unless they're plannin' to lock the doors when we go in or some damn thing," she whispers, a bit fiercely. Her eyes scan their surroundings for any surreptitious would-be ambushers.

Zhandar glowers darkly. "Maybe we should just throw in a few jars of alchemist's fire and let it all burn? How likely is it, do we think, that there are any clues in there about what is going on in this accursed town?" Notably it doesn’t look like the insects are an actual swarm in the mechanical sense, just a ton of insects converging on the bodies. Just in case that wasn’t clear!

Zhandar and Mila add two more pairs of eyes to the small barn, one inside and one outside, but Zhandar doesn’t notice anything the other two haven’t already seen.

Mila looks around the outside of the stable, trying to see if anything is amiss. All of the candle lights that you saw in houses on the way over here have slowly been extinguished one by one as the household went to sleep. Small trails of smoke drift out of a handful of the windows still, likely the flayleaf that the villagers mentioned burning to aid their sleep on this holiday. The silence continues outside the stable, not a single soul moving around besides the party.

The night is dark and cold; you are alone.

"They had to get...." Park steps away from the barn to get a breath of air without gagging. He looks around, his eyes taking on a distant look as he senses Birdie, then he continues.

"They had to get that pig, for the event. That was probably the last living animal here, so they had to know. This whole thing just makes no sense. I'm half tempted to just go and storm the Mayor's home...." He pauses to regain his calm, anger practically causing his eyes to flash red.... "But, I don't think that will help. Let's see if we can open this barn fully to let the stink out as much as possible. If we approach upwind with light maybe we can see what killed them? If they're all like the pig the villagers may be in danger. I think we need to know."

Open any other doors or windows that we can open. Allow air to flow through the building. Then give it a bit of time to flush out some of the stink.

Rajuna doesn't see any particular 'other surprises' outside of the building when he first looks, but as he reaches out and opens the door he notices way more of the tiny spiders out here than inside. In fact, are they falling on him from...above? They're almost swarming him now, his arm covered in the things. He looks up just as a giant spider the size of a small horse drops from the side of the stable, having squeezed itself out of a window above. Rajuna looking up and noticing it right before it launches itself at him allows him to step out of the way of most of the falling mass, although a part of it does hit him.

Rajuna takes 6 damage from the giant spider falling on him.

The spider, on closer look, actually has giant cracks running along its carapace that are filled with thousands of spiders crawling in and out of them. The swarm of things almost look like they're in control of the giant spider, actually, now that Rajuna is right next to the horrible thing. They extend outside of the carapace as well, creating a creepy crawly swarm surrounding the thing.

Assuming I see the horse-sized spider almost crush Rajuna?

Yeah, Rajuna got the door open before he was jumped.

Park and Rajuna both identify this horrifying blend of two sizes of spider as a deathweb, an undead exoskeleton of a giant spider tied to a swarm of spiders with the vilest of necromantic rites. The swarm gives it a form of intelligence, allowing it to act with some cunning.
Rajuna gets two questions and Park gets three, but Rajuna is about to experience one of its abilities firsthand.

Once Rajuna fires off his flurry of attacks, hitting twice and dealing some damage to the carapace, he notices that the spider swarm infesting the corpse actually spreads out farther than he thought. They crawl all over him, biting him dozens of times.

"Sonofa--"

Mila stares in wide-eyed horror for a moment. That is a lot of spiders. That is so many spiders...

...but the thing they live in is undead. She knows how to fight undead. Even if her hand burns and stings with the memory of a spider's bite, in a dream....

Questions:
1. Is this thing considered a single creature or a swarm? Meaning can we kill it with single attacks or do we need something AoE-ish to take out the little spiders?
2. Any weaknesses?

Already answered the one I assumed. Swarm attack and poison....
1. Special attacks other than swarm and poison?
2. and probably 3. Immunities and/or resistances?

Roll20 link

it is a single creature, and weapons work normally on it. Once the carapace is destroyed the spiders will disperse. It doesn’t take extra damage from AoE like a swarm would, and doesn’t have any specific weaknesses beyond undead traits (positive energy).

The infestation aura is just from being adjacent to it, and carries the poison and nauseating effects. It has a web ability, like normal spiders; can throw webs to entangle targets. No special resistances or immunities beyond normal undead stuff (mind-affecting, etc).

You can draw your bow as part of a move, Mila. I’m not at my PC to reassign your token (if that’s what is wrong) but I’ll do it as soon as I am.

Round 2

Zhandar plants her feet and using her special magus training casts a spell on a pair of vaporous potion of cure light wounds that she throws at the undead carapace with her staff.

Using spell combat, she throws a vaporous potion at the ground beneath the deathweb, then quickly draws another from her bandolier and casts a disrupt undead spell on it. Then she throws this one at the creature as well.

Damage (positive): 1d6 + 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + (6) + 1 = 10

I don't think I get to roll for a critical because as usual I was only aiming at the square the deathweb was in.

Park doesn't manage to find purchase in it this time, but luckily for the party Zhandar combines her alchemical weapons with Rajuna's strikes and brings the deathweb down. Its carapace slumps to the ground and the necromantic force holding the spider swarm inside of the giant spiders' corpse disperses, leaving the thousands of spiders inside to scatter naturally away from said corpse.

Combat over! Park takes 2 more strength damage but then shakes the poison off thankfully for him. He has 4 points of strength damage total, but will take no more from the poison.

I think you still have that wand of lesser restoration right? That'd fix that right up.

Rajuna takes a look upstairs, climbing the ladder up to the second story and sees quite a few webs hanging in places you couldn't see from below. Once he gets up there he investigates a little bit and finds a secondary door to a small office. It has been smashed open by something large, and the rotting remains of a man sits against one wall. A quick examination of the office reveals not a whole lot of interest, except sitting on the desk is a single book.

Rajuna can see the title from where he's standing at the door, Serving Your Hunger, inscribed across the top in silver ink.

Knowledge Religion DC 17:
Serving Your Hunger is an unholy text of the faith of Urgathoa, goddess of undeath and disease. Strangely enough, although it does have information on the most common ways to become undead, it also contains numerous recipes for extravagant meals. Several rare copies are rumored to have advice and instructions for how to properly cook humanoids.

If you decide to open the book, you can read the info in the spoiler above for yourself.

He drops down the ladder quickly, brandishing the book. He offers it to the others. "This answers a few questions. Page 37 is a treat, if you want to try the other other white meat."

Dang, annoying I still have my travel spells prepped and not yet delay poison! Alas

Mila breathes hard for several seconds following the death of the spider-horror. She swallows, looking down at the twitching carapace. That's... worse than anything she'd ever shot back home. Much worse. If she'd been alone....

...but she isn't, she reminds herself. The others-- they're not scared, concerned but not panicking. That means they've dealt with stuff like this before. Alright. Alright, she can do this too.

Taking a deep breath, Mila moves to Park to inspect his bites with concern. "Oh, it got you deep..."

"Tomorrow, I could patch you up-- there's a prayer that restores vitality from stuff like this," she says with worry. OOC I'm happy to use the wand on you of course, but IC Mila doesn't know about it ;)

If someone in the party tells her about the wand...:
"Gosh! Prayers inside a stick. That's fancy. Okay, gimme a second..."

"There you go," Mila says with a gentle pat to Park's shoulder and a smile at him. After a few seconds she realizes her hand is still on his shoulder and blushes before quickly pulling it back.

She resists the urge to gag and slams the book shut. "This village gets better and better! Deadeye watch us... Let me check, make sure there's nothin' magic around we ain't found..."

Mila will do a sweep with detect magic of the barn interior

At first what they're saying isn't able to be made out but as they get closer the pair can hear their words.

"You think it's gotten them yet?" one says, a nervous tone in the female voice. "I'd bet money it has. Have you seen the damn thing?" a deeper tone answers a gruffer man, obviously annoyed for some reason. The two voices are rapidly approaching the still-open barn door, and seemingly haven't spotted either the spider corpse or you.

Hey, with a natural 20, does Zhandar recognize the voice? :)
