Ogren Bound
|
Ogren looks back up at Isurus. "Is it really just the shadows? Huh..." With one look back at the spot where he started crying, Ogren moves to the stairs and bounces up them two at a time, wanting to end these shadows affecting his mind.
| Vampire GM By Day |
I placed in in some kind of order on the stairs going up, Isurus in the lead and I assumed Ogren next. After that I kinda guessed.
Droning voices echo off the mahogany walls and domed, plaster ceiling of this luxurious room. The sumptuous furniture has been pushed to the sides of the room, making space for eldritch markings and mystical paraphernalia laid carefully over the plush carpet. The chamber seems muted and dim despite the crystal chandelier overhead, and a bone-numbing chill seeps through the space along with a metallic scent. A ritual is obviously underway here, but it doesn’t seem as though it’s working as planned. Shadowy energy lashes out from a twisting breach in the center of the room, and indistinct shapes flit and scuttle along the walls.
Who you presume to be Tavvar (Lady with grey hair) stands at the head of the circle, her face twisted in a determined grimace, while her (presumed) assistants each frantically continue their gestures and chants. The ritual is obviously wearing them down.
Things are obviously deteriorating fast as you see a shadow take a more solid shape with a sinister grin and stalk towards the quartet of arcanists. Everyone realizes it's time for action!
Gonnna assume Isurus uses their battle ability to give everyone +2 initiative because they said they would. Also +1 from scouting.

Isurus focuses the adrenaline of battle as his eyes turn milky white and the smell of blood suffuses the room. He bursts up the stairs and around the shadowy form menacing the ritualist to engage it from behind. "This is out of control! How do we stop it," he shouts at Tavvar as he drives his tridents toward the shadow, one then the other.

Ogren moves to bounce up the stairs first, but stops when Isurus instead takes the lead I have a mental image of him preventing the goblin from running face first into danger. Not sure how true that is, though.
Ogren follows behind the azarketi and peers into the room. "Wow! That's pretty and cool!"

Curving stairs on a square map...I think I can get into a flank with 1 action.
Jaxon hears the chanting and rushes past the others. "You have to stop this now!" He glares at Tavvar seeing if he can break her concentration. Then he refocuses on the shadow, to try and stop it from fully forming with his morningstar.

Tavvar and her apprentices do not respond to Isurus, they are deep in concentrating on whatever they are doing and it seems like they are trying to control the ritual, not continue it.
Isurus's first strike is ever so slightly off target and the shadow manages to slip between the tines of his trident. His second attack hits solidly though, dealing a surprising amount of damage to the shadow, but it still has some fight left in it.
As Jaxon reaches the top of the stairs he doesn't know what is going on, but he recognizes instantly the tell-tale facial expression on Tavvar as what could politely be called 'damage control mode.' Even though he isn't well versed in magics, he can tell from a moment's notice that she and her apprentices are trying to shut the ritual down, or at least contain it. Attempting to disrupt her concentration here with an intimidate check would be . . . . bad.
It is immediately clear that Tavvar and her apprentices are noncombatants and are no longer trying to continue the ritual. If you want, I can treat your demoralize as your first attack roll, and your attack as your second attack Role Jaxon.

Jaxon gets a sneak attack in on the shadow, though his second attack misses.

Assuming Alaric wants to alert the rest of the party he can.
Special rule, while normally it is an action to inform an ally of information from a successful identify, it is a free action here, presumably you say a short phrase like ‘The ritual uses shadowtounge!’ You have accrued one success to stopping the ritual, but there are more hits you need to achieve before it is shut down. You can continue to use occultism to shut the ritual down, but an easier way may be to counter-chant in shadowtongue with society or counter the planar energies with religion. There is no penalty for failure unless you crit fail.
