Akh swims through the electrovores, keeping his mouth closed to not accidentally scoop one up. He ponders his options, suddenly regretting his choice of electric breath when he got his latest gland installed. Unfortunately for him, he doesn't have any other options for dealing with 30-50 feral electrovores that have run onto his starship while his small allies are playing nearby. Trusting his allies, he swirls in place and gets ready to punch any electrovores that get particularly feisty.

Melissa recognizes this troop and lets the group know that this colony takes half damage from single attacks and is only immune to spells or effects that touch a specific number of creatures but take additional damage from attacks that hit everything in an area. Akh takes this in stride, cutting into the flurry of electrovores. His attacks hit air as much as they hit the pests, but he manages to drop several corpses to the floor.

Yeah, I'm not sure what it is about the iconography on this map but it's not super clear. I've put an icon on the top square of each stair. Those squares are the same spot on each half of the map. So "a" and "a" are the same space.

You would have found them funneling up the stairs very quickly. And wouldn't have seen them until at least someone went downstairs to scout the Power Core. But yes! A mechanic with a drone could have turned this into a brutal ambush.
Melissa, seeing double, shoots into one of the gaps in the swarm and doesn't hit any electrovores. Guess? and Akh defend her and Jaraduk's escape, taking down a few more electrovores. Del takes down a few more, but not enough! I rolled up another Force Blast, just to see if it would end the fight. It didn't! So I didn't keep the roll to allow Del to play her own turn. But it was good verification that the bot wouldn't have ended it.

Akh happily takes a short rest after the electrovores are dispersed. "We need some industrial strength poison gas to push through the vents. Can't go having a whole pile of electrovores gnawing on the power core while we're flying. Speaking of, maybe we should check if it still works after that?"
GM Ewok |
Melissa wades through the several millimeters of gore splattered across the floor of the engine room. Among the many dismembered and cleaved bodies, she does find a few electrovores that are still patchable. After splinting their wings, Melissa does the same for your own group. As Melissa squeaks into the vents, something itches in the back of your mind...
Those electrovores are definitely still aboard the ship. It's clear this is their feeding ground. While you could shell out a few thousand creds - assuming you weren't Burned anymore - you could also turn off the ship’s power core. After a few days without food, the electrovores will abandon the ship for other easy sources on Station.
Akh pulls over his more engineering-minded teammates to the power core and nudges them until they do a systems check. Once up close, after stepping over the electrovore detritus and bloody remains, you notice a keyhole at the top of the control panel. Without it Melissa is unable to get into the mainframe. Knowing the military encryption that protects starship systems, Melissa does not have much faith in her ability to hack in without that key. But from the basic screen, Melissa can tell that the electrovores actually may have supported the engine far past it's expected life! The longevity of this model is more extensive than it's production date would have you believe. Perhaps the consistent cycling that sated the electrovores' hunger kept the old engine healthy. While the power core's blue glow is faintly throbbing, it will be enough to get the ship up and running. Once there, the system will recharge and be almost as good as new.

With the electrovores saved - as much as they can be - the group heads to the bridge to find a key, a way to get this ship working, and maybe a few extra socks. You head through the Engine Room and up the far stairs into the Bridge. Once there you are sorely disappointed. The basic architecture of the ship’s bridge remains sound, but electrovores have devastated the electrical work. Chewed, tangled wires carpet the floors, while gashes and cracks splinter every computer monitor. Everything from the captain’s chair command keys to the pilot’s joystick hangs together by strained shards of plastic and strips of metal. While the bridge is not going to win any beauty pageant awards, it looks workable. A few taps of the keys and Melissa is able to get power fully throughout the ship. Lights flicker, fans whir, and the lifts in the cargo holds hum to life.
Jaraduk, from his old days flying the edges of space doing less-than-reputable things, recalls that one of those lifts led somewhere you haven't seen. A hidden hold, perhaps? He leads you to the aft cargo hold where you head up the lift D. You head up two levels to a tech workshop! This was likely once a wondrous laboratory, but you can see that the electrovores have ravaged its electronic equipment and the scavenger slime pilfered its metallic contents to make the room all but useless. Its tool shelves lie empty, and its robotic arms hang listlessly. One floor-level cupboard remains sealed behind a padlock.
You bypass the analog lock to find a dusty X-ray visor and an old but intact set of computer equipment designed for a starship interface. With these parts a computer expert could improve the mark of the ship’s defensive countermeasures by 1.
You continue to walk through the ship, searching for loot or any other surprises. You follow the mysterious stairs in the mess hall upwards and find the Captain's Quarters. This room overlooks the starship’s sorry exterior through a shattered windshield. The mattress appears intact but ancient and hard, while dust blankets the desk. However, a keyring bearing a transparent, bean-shaped jewel and a single key lies inside the desk drawer underneath some stiffened and illegible papers. The key looks like it will fit the Rust Bug’s power core! Del and Melissa recognize that the jewel is a mk 3 air elemental gem.

A computer system with a ship interface? The key in the captain's quarters? This ship is almost begging us to fix it up. Replace the quarters windshield. Lots of dusting. A call to gotjunk.sphere. New sleeping mattresses. We've got our work cut out for us. I would love to restore that tech workshop too, but one thing at a time.
He seems to be taking an inventory on his datapad like a real-estate nuar fixing to flip a property.
Hmm, yeah. This will be interesting being low on creds.
