Taking two massive pummels in a row, Owlbear's left eye swells almost immediately, and he's going to have a wicked bruise on his left abdomen. The big man yowls in pain, simultaneously trying to cover his stomach and face, and tries to back away from Asami, weeping openly. Plugg angrily shoves Owlbear back toward Asami. "Quit crying, you idiot! Get back in there!"

Still weeping openly and clearly afraid, the poor man flails wildly while still trying to cover his stomach. Surprisingly, the hit connects, but it holds not even half the power that it did before, as his heart is clearly not in this fight. (2 more non-lethal. Plus an AoO for attacking unarmed.)

Asami wasn't raised in the yakuza as a great-granddaughter of Kyubi the Thunder to have mercy. As he winds up a blow, she socks him with a quick jab.

AoO: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Or maybe she was? It's too light, too much of a glancing blow to do anything but provide contact.

As she shrugs Owlbear's blow off her shoulder, she grits her teeth; that first hit's still smarting, honestly, even with the second one having already been mostly-forgotten. She lashes out with another quick jab and then a hard uppercut to his left side.

Behind the Screen:

Apologies, the bonus is to your AC against his attacks, not to your attacks against him. Considering he had a 9 AC, you didn't really need a bonus to hit anyway lol.

The uppercut lands and Asami hears bones crack as Owlbear's weeping comes to a sudden and violent halt. He collapses unconscious to the floor as blood trickles from his mouth. Roughly half the pirates erupt in cheers and the other half in boos as Owlbear's senseless body is dragged belowdecks. Plugg stares daggers at Asami before following his croneys belowdecks, kicking Owlbear's legs viciously as he walks. "F#+$ing cretin," he grumbles.

COMBAT OVER!

Not everyone is pleased by the events. Sandara doesn't look at Asami, but rather stares after the bloodied simpleton with a small frown, her brow furrowed. She shakes her head and wanders off toward the bow.

Next to Carlos, one person has a much more pronounced reaction. Shivikah's steely gaze locks on Asami's back, disgust painted across his features. "Some friends you have," he mutters. He gives the vishkanya a hard stare, then says, "I am going to bed. I have seen enough for one night." He slips down the stairwell after Plugg and the others.

Draxxie won 3gp on the fight, and Asami won 100gp! Everyone but Carlosss still has a nighttime Ship Action to take if they so choose.

Carlosss's eye ridges pull together in a look of consternation, "Why does everyone think just because we got kidnapped together we are friends? Work together and don't hate each other, sure. That doesn't make us buds." He sighs as Shivikah stomps off.

Men!

The vishkanya looks around and spies his target. Slipping up next to Draxxie he whispers, "I have apparently already shot my wad/used up my ship action used up my chance to make new friends. But I was thinking maybe if you could play things right someone could use a friend right now? Someone who could be very useful." His gaze lingers on the trail of blood and sweat that marks the path Owlbear was dragged.

He allows things to settle down and eventually heads to bed as well. Feeling both good and bad about things.

Asami snorts, not particularly bothered by the booing as she dusts the blood off her knuckles. She stoops down and snatches up the purse, tucking it into a spacious pocket in her red-streaked trousers.

She, too, follows Plugg.

Draxxie collects her winnings - meagre next to Asami's purse, but she tips her tricorne at the sailors who hand over their gold.

There's a story here, and it ain't a pretty one.

She listens to Carlosss' suggestion and whispers back "That lummox needs friends alright, but I ain't sure I c'n get ta him. Been all over the ship t'day an' not seen where they keep him. Locked up somewhere dark, prob'ly. Too difficult t' see t' Owlbear now. He'll be unconscious, and hidden. Need t' know where e's kept. Besides, I sorta promised something to Conchobar fer t'night. No, not that!"

Draxxie goes looking for the flamboyant gnome. "Hey Conchobar, y' ready? Lessee if we can get Rosie t' play some."

Together the pair go ask Rosie Cusswell to make a trio, Draxxie promising to play backing for the two small folk. "Ya know All fer me grog?"

"And it's all for me grog, me jolly jolly grog
All for me beer and tobacco
Well I've spent all me tin with the lassies drinking gin
Far across the western ocean I must wander

I'm sick in the head and I haven't been to bed
Since first I came ashore with me plunder
I've seen centipedes and snakes
And my head is full off aches
And I'll have to make a path for way out yonder

Whilst the trio takes a short break (or at least the ladies let Conch go solo for a song or two) Draxxie asks Rosie "Ya seen the fiddle in the Quartermaster's stores? Looks t' be a fine one. It weren't yours were it Rosie?"

@Draxxie:
I mentioned in an earlier post that you had, in fact, seen Owlbear around, mostly in the middle hold, but he was distinctly unfriendly. He didn't let anyone get near him.

Rosie scowls at Draxxie. "It is mine, point of fact. And that f+@+ing cow in the ship's stores won't give it back. I don't give a s#$* about any of my other stuff, but that fiddle is special to me. She said it belongs to the captain now. I said my foot belongs in her f~*!ing eye socket. She threw me -- threw me! -- out of the gods-damned ship stores! Said I'm not allowed back in!" She huffs. "Put my f%#~ing fiddle bow right up her a--"

"Dear Rosie!" Conchobar interrupts with a cough. "A respite is all well, but I think our attendees are getting rather restless! Shall we tucker them out with a fine jig?"

Rosie eyes Conchobar for a long moment, then grunts irritably and picks up her battered fiddle to join him for round 2.

@Asami:
Asami follows the others downstairs. Plugg directs his cronies to throw Owlbear in a dark corner of the hold and heads back upstairs. As he passes Asami, he gives her another hateful look before shoving past her and up the stairs, his cronies in hot pursuit.

@Asami:
Plugg freezes in his tracks, as do the two cronies with him. His face goes completely neutral, and in a dangerously quiet voice, he mutters, "Did you just lay hands on the First Mate?"

----

@Draxxie:
As the halfling clambers up onto a barrel, fiddle in hand, she shrugs sourly. "Whole lotta s$*% ain't right with this tub," she grumbles, before launching into a Chelish song, of all things, but one with a tempo comparable Varisian jig, fast-paced and strangely catchy. Conchobar pauses for a moment, frowning, before recognizing the tune with a laugh. "You almost lost me, dearest Rosie, changing the tempo! I think I remember the words."

Along a-day came a bright young maiden
Not a day past her blossoming rose
Hair the shape and humor of fire
Emerald of eye and hawk of nose!

Never has this soul seen equal
Not in queens' or angels' faces
And being bold and skilled as I am,
I vowed to put her legs through their paces!

I walked with her on the path most humble,
Produced a flower and asked her name
She laughed and said "Away, you rogue!
For I'm the maiden Honey Laine."

The lyrics start fairly simple, if a bit tawdry, but they quickly get wildly out of hand as the narrator attempts progressively more ludicrous ways to convince Honey Laine to have sex with him, culminating in the narrator getting turned into a goat by a witch.

----

@Oduim:
Cog glares at Oduim for a moment, but then shakes his head. "Just some sport," he says in a heavy Varisian accent. "Sure as Hells not the worst thing to happen on this ship. Just don't sass the officers or lay hands on anybody, you should be fine. Well... fine as you can be around here. Scourge seems to have it out for you lot, though maybe the other three moreso than you, aren't you lucky. And if Scourge has it out for you, might as well put money on him souring Plugg to you, as well. That weasel is the only one that has Plugg's ear, from what I heard. Tread lightly around those two. Anybody else on the crew probably won't mess with you unless ordered to. Nobody wants lashes around here, especially not from Scourge. He is a coward and a bully if ever I saw one, but he also has a skilled hand at dealing out pain. I've not been here much longer than you, but I have heard whispers he has killed folk who get tied to the mainmast. Flayed their backs open and they bled out. Sometimes Captain Harrigan stops him before they die. Sometimes..." Cog shrugs. "You will get no trouble from me, though. I keep my head down, do my work. I am on the ocean, as I dreamed. That is all I need. Though a slightly less cruel captain would be preferable, I will not complain." He shrugs again and polishes off his rum. "I am going to find a game of dice. You are welcome to join."

You moved him from Unfriendly to Indifferent! And lucky you rolled a nat 20 because that was the only way you would have gotten it (DC 19). :O

"You're an officer, not a god, not even on this ship. Harrigan laid out the rules pretty clean, and I don't think he's running so soft a ship that we're not allowed to touch each other."

She snorts. "Unless you wanna be the one to go from laying hands to throwing them yourself. Would that be a first offense for you, or a second? I didn't come down here to swing at you, and I'd rather take the hit and let the Captain pay you back for it."

Her fingers slip off his wrist, but she keeps her eyes down at him.

Behind the Screen:

Plugg sneers. "The captain wouldn't bat an eye if I told him you swung at me. Wouldn't even question it. I don't need a reason; I could have you lashed until you were nothing but bacon strips, freak. Don't forget it. You think because you know how to throw a punch you're something special. You're not. You're a freak, an abomination. You're lower than scum to me. Just keep smirking. I'll wipe it off your face soon enough." He storms out of the hold without bothering to hear what Asami has to say for herself.

Sense Motive DC 16:

While you believe Plugg that the captain would probably just take anything his First Mate said at face value, you did detect a slight note of hesitation. Most likely because while that would all be fine and good if no one could prove Plugg was lying, solid evidence to the contrary would probably put the First Mate in a world of hurt with the captain.

Of course, the captain doesn't seem to like any of the crew aside from a couple of his officers, so your eyewitness testimonies probably wouldn't hold any water with him, begging the question: what would be solid evidence?

Asami lets it roll right off of her with a snort, Plugg finally stepping away.

Exactly the kind of idiot he looks like. Knew some officers like that back in the yakuza.

They never lasted long. Authority's a constructed concept; getting your s&!+ wrecked in is very much real, and it's not reserved for clan captains and first mates.

She takes in a deep breath and sighs; she's still smarting a bit from Owlbear's cleaner blow as she squats down onto the ground is he in a cell? if so, she's against the bars and... just watches, mostly. Not that he seems likely to hop up and do anything anyway.

I didn't hit him hard enough to kill him, but you never know when something's gonna hemorrhage. Somebody's gotta keep an eye on him for a bit.

Behind the Screen:

@Asami:
No cage, no ropes or chains or anything, aside from the broken one around his neck. Just kind of dumped behind some crates in the hold.

Asami watches the big man's breathing, which remains mostly steady. She cleaned his clock good and hard, but aside from some swelling around his jaw and one huge, ugly bruise forming on his abdomen, he seems to be okay. Nothing a few days of not getting hit by an absolute beast of a martial artist can't fix.

Do you want to hang around until he wakes up? It's going to be 2 hours. A bit of a wait, but not so long you have to worry about losing sleep time.

----

@Everyone else:
Anything else you all want to do before heading to bed? Rosie and/or Conchobar are free to chat after the song is done, and Oduim is welcome to ask any follow-up questions of Cog. He seems... not friendly, exactly, but less short with you. And he invited you to gamble if you want! Basically a Wisdom check (since you're not trained in Profession Gambling). And Carlos may have used his Ship Action for the shot at improving Shivikah's mood, which... worked?... but you're free to do any RP, including tracking down Shivikah to follow up if you want. I don't want anybody to feel like they can't do as much RP as they want! That's the whole point of this after all. :)

But yes, GM, Asami will stick around until he wakes.

Asami's eyes go up, and she's halfway off the floor before she realizes it's her favorite half-naked snake man on this particular ship.

It's a category that would contain a surprisingly high number of members if not for the specification, actually, but that's the yakuza for you.

"But as far as I can tell, he's a crewmate, and if Plugg's useless ass isn't going to at least send a medic down here, he at least deserves someone to make sure he wakes up in one piece."

She's quiet for a moment, then turns to look at the wall.

I am so waiting to get a few plants in the galley so I can cast Goodberry. It would be so helpful in a case like this.

Even with offers of food and soothing words, Owlbear seems inconsolable.

Mechanically, he's both hostile and frightened, making the DC very high.

He feels the buzz from the rum fading and yawns. A large row of sharp teeth are visible.

He snaps his jaw shut, "Bed time for me. Jeeze this ship is tiring."

When they wake, they hear it even before opening their eyes: the low, arrhythmic drone of raindrops on the hull.

Day 6
18 Gozran, 4712 AR
Oathday, Morning

By the time you reach the main deck, you know what to expect, but it still makes you flinch as the first drops splash your face. The wind isn't heavy, thankfully, but it's an ominous sign. The clouds are fat and gray in every direction but north, where you came from, and even there you can actually see the line of bruised sky slowly devour the bright blue, casting the low hills of the isles in a long shadow.

Thankfully, the rain is little more than a drizzle with occasional fat drops. You've worked in worse; it's mostly an annoyance. However, the near-pitch clouds on the southern horizon look significantly less friendly.

Knowledge (geography) or Profession (sailor) DC 15:

Most of these small islets that the Wormwood is passing by are unnamed, but a few have telltale shapes that sailors use to navigate by. You can tell you're going mostly south-by-southwest, practically beelining for the open waters of the Fever Sea. Early tomorrow, you should pass the largest island in the Shackles, Motaku Isle, and be out on the open waters the next day or the day after.

@Asami:
"Asami! Ratline! Upper rigging!"

Even on a slippery surface, the Climb DC is low enough for Asami to take 10, so no worries about the checks for that, but I do need a Profession (sailor) or Dexterity check.

----

@Carlosss:
Scourge points belowdecks. "Yer on bilges, snake! Keep that pump goin' non-stop!"

It's the usual! I need a Strength check and a Constitution check. If you fail the Con check, you're fatigued for your nighttime Ship Action.

----

Draxxie:
"Yer on ropes! Get to it."

Hauling Rope and Knot Work: Tying and untying knots in the ship’s ropes and moving heavy coils of rope from one part of the ship to another, requiring a Profession (sailor) or Strength check. The PC must also make a Constitution check to avoid being fatigued at the end of the shift.

----

@Oduim:
When Oduim arrives in the galley, a mostly-sober Ambrose hums loudly, jovially, and wildly off-key as he gathers ingredients. One of his chickens is nesting in his filthy chef's hat. "Ah, there y'are, m'boy! Come on, we're fryin' up some strips o' salted meats. Sorta like bacon, but who knows what kinda meat!" He leans in conspiratorially. "Truth be told it be tha last o' the rat meat ye an' yer friends brung me." He chuckles and nods toward the pantry, making the chicken wobble dangerously on his pate. "Grab me tha' half-empty sack o' taters, aye?"

Lucky you! Since Ambrose is sober, you actually don't have to roll anything this time. You're just assisting.

As soon as she's got ahead of the ropes, Draxxie heads to the quartermaster. She takes the heavy purse of gold that Asami left with her.

Carlosss rolls out of his hammock in a crappy mood. The ship rocking extra as the waves kick up did not help his slumber and he immediately knows what the drumming sound is.

RAIN!

Rain ain’t good for no one. How can people enjoy how good he looks if they can’t see him? And it is so dull, no glistening sun reflecting off his golden scales. Ugh.

He is almost happy to be assigned the bilges. Might as well be down there, the day is already f@&&ed.

Behind the Screen:

@Asami:
The brawler almost slips once, which would have been a nasty tumble, but she manages to keep her footing, waving her arms until her center of gravity settles in the right place. She looks up to see Ratline next to her with one hand out, ready to catch her. She also notes he's leaning ever so slightly in the direction opposite the one she was going to fall; he was planning to use himself as a counter-weight to keep her upright. A bold assessment of the physics involved, but at least his heart was in the right place. Thankfully, Asami was paying enough attention to right her footing by herself. The rat-nosed halfling nods appreciatively before shimmying up to the next beam to start lashing the sail there.

Close, but thanks to your working diligently, you succeed!

----

@Carlosss:
Funny, I'd have thought he'd be all for glistening half-naked in a light drizzle. Like Ryan Gosling at the end of The Notebook, or something.

Carlos mans that pump like he knows what he's doing! And hardly breaks a sweat doing it! Which would be unfortunate, of course--he always looks better sweating, everybody knows this--but he's in the bilges where nobody can see him anyway.

----

@Draxxie:
Grok snickers. "Sure, Draxxie. And my neck skin is smooth as a baby's bottom." She pulls out the fiddle, which is clearly made by a master's hand, and considers it for a few moments before tapping her chin. "Gosh, you know, now that ya mention it, there is some slight boxing around the tailpiece. Captain marked it at a hundred, but with that kinda wear and tear, wouldn't be right to sell it for full price. Let's say sixty-five, yeah?" She gives a conspiratorial wink.

Yeah, it's a masterwork fiddle, unfortunately. It's gonna be tough to get, but she is offering a pretty hefty discount.

----

@Oduim:
As far as places you haven't explored, most of the rooms aside from the bilges haven't been thoroughly searched. Really any section of the ship could be checked, though depending on foot traffic might be significantly harder than others.

A thorough inspection of the main, poop, and foredecks are possible, though really only feasible at night since the top decks are constantly swarming with working crew during the day. There's also the middle holds (mid-decks between the stairs and the galley/officer's quarters) which sees significantly less traffic but would still be a challenge during the day, and the lower deck where the bulk of the crew (including the party) sleeps. I'd say you could search 1d4 footlockers on a successful Stealth check. Many are probably locked of course, but maybe not all! Sounds like a percentile roll to me. ;)

Since you've already rolled in the spoilers, feel free to pick one of those places to look and I'll let you know if you were successful!.

Sixty-five gp seems quite reasonable actually ;)

Draxxie grins back at Grok. "Yer a fine quartermaster, Grok. Got a real eye fer detail. It's a deal!" Draxxie counts out the gold, then wraps the fiddle carefully in her waterproofed bag. She winks: "See ya later, lady!"

Before getting back to work, Draxxie locks the fiddle (still in its protective wrap) in her footlocker. She's careful that Rosie Cusswell is nowhere nearby. Gonna surprise the sweary sod tonight! And Asami gets some change!

The druid is about to dig into a couple crates and take a good look around when the ship's carpenter, Habbly Quarne tromps up the ladder and starts working on reinforcing one of the masts with some spare plywood. It looks like he's going to be at it for a while, foiling Oduim's attempts to snoop.

The good news is you have to fail by like, a lot in order to get "caught red-handed." Basically your failed Stealth means you got interrupted partway through and were unable to finish.

----

@Everyone:
The sky is gray and dull, but not so dark that you don't see when the sun sets. The bell rings calling for end of day, and the crew gathers for rum rations and Ambrose's "meatloaf surprise." More than one crewmate looks askance at the slice of weirdness plopped on a plate with a ship's biscuit, but nobody bothers to complain.
