Dora 34 |
"I don't care about the requirements. I want to reach a point where all factions have agreed not to fight, and we can tell that stupid little drone that no one will ever try again to achieve dominance over anyone else, so it can just go jump in a lake of coolant."

Talltree |

"That is strange. Watch there...one of the spore clouds just flashed. I can't tell if it's bioluminescence, static electricity, or even some sort of triboluminescence phenomenon. Fascinating!"
GM Aerondor |
The travel is tough and tiring here, and the warmth a little higher than the rest of the cavern. The humidity has grown too, and the air feels heavy around you. The sounds of your footsteps are muffled as if the air itself was swallowing any sign of your passing.
Vision here is limited, as the mists have slowly risen, and further than twenty or maybe thirty feet is almost impossible.
Then the silence is rent with a sudden roar and a cry of pain!
New map. Not in initiative... yet
GM Aerondor |
Reordered things on the map so you should be able to get hold of your icons now.
Talltree twitches. There is no movement that he can detect nearby. Other than his fellow starfinders.
Sisyar |
Sisyar looks around at the ominous mist. "Any signs of the fungi?" he whispers while looking around.
GM Aerondor |
There are lots of fungi around, but not the ones the gnolls want.
And to be clear, they want general access to them, not just a one off harvest.
Another cry of pain is heard to the left, followed by a whimper.
GM Aerondor |
The team slowly advances, coming to an odd intersection in the twisted paths of the fungi forest.
DC 20
GM Aerondor |
Another horrible shriek which quickly tails off into a dying gurgle and then silence is heard from the direction that Talltree points.
Kato Oomsphere |
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
"I hear is too. It does not sound very promising. Be on guard everyone and let us advance."
Kato begins to move forward through the mist towards the sounds looking on the ground and the forest around him for signs of what could have possibly made these sounds.
Survival: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Life Science: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
GM Aerondor |
The group takes the left path. There is an audible shuffling sound now among the fungi-forest, but still nothing to be seen.
Sisyar |
Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18
"I wonder what that light is." Sisyar asks after Talltree points it out. Hearing the shuffling sound, Sisyar is on edge. "What's that!"
Sisyar |
Sisyar tenses up and huddles in close to his allies. "We need to be careful here.". He whispers, "Maybe it's one of those ghosts."
GM Aerondor |
The Starfinders continue down the path, the mist blanketing the terrain all around - smothering light and sound and dampening even the teams own footsteps.
Each of you feels eyes on you, the hair on your necks standing up. But try as you might you can see and hear nothing other than each other.
Sisyar |
Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19
Sisyar quietly points on a figure to the east (left). "Do you see that?". He squints his eyes but is hesitant to approach just yet.
Kato Oomsphere |
perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
"I see something, but I am unsure what it could be. Let me investigate closer." Kato says through the comms as he activates his environmental protection. He does not want to be caught in the fumes of some vent and this mist has him on edge.
He approaches the figure trying to find who or what it is.
GM Aerondor |
Kato swings wide.
The swamp’s tangled vegetation gives way and opens into a wide clearing bordered by towering, mildly luminescent mushrooms that stand over twenty feet tall. The smell of rotten flesh pervades the area, lingering in the stillness as if trapped. The dim green light from the massive fungi illuminates several
figures sitting up against one of the mushroom’s stalks.
Sisyar |
Sisyar notices the figures sitting up against the mushroom stalks. He meekly calls out to them. "Are you the ghosts". He hides behind Dora while pointing them out.
GM Aerondor |
Ugh. The team carefully approaches the seated figures. Closer inspection reveals the figures to be four dead gnolls. Gruesome symbols have been carved into the gnolls’ chests and faces.
Medicine, survival, life science and perception checks may all be helpful here.
Kato Oomsphere |
survival: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17
Kato moves closer and investigates the dead gnolls. Looking around the area for any signs of who or what may have done this.
Sisyar |
Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18
A shiver goes down Sisyar's spine as he approaches. "Anyone see anything?"
GM Aerondor |
Well, well well.
Kato examines the area and finds signs that show the gnolls were dragged to the mushroom and mutilated post mortem. In addition, there are tracks of a hoofed creature throughout the area.
Sisyar notices several circles of lovingly tended mushrooms, including one that has been crushed by gnoll footprints.
Sisyar |
"DO NOT STEP ON THE MUSHROOMS! WATCH WHERE YOU STEP!" Sisyar yells out to his companions. Sisyar carefully looks around at the ground, hoping no mushrooms are near him.
(Can we tell what kind of hoofed creature and/or where it's going?)
GM Aerondor |
Sisyar warns the group to avoid the mushrooms, and tries following the tracks, but after a few steps they.... vanish. As if whatever made them was never there. Looking back, he can see it was there, but then it appears to have vanished... into thin air.
Sisyar |
"Ominous."
"Ghosts? Are you out there? We come in peace. We just want to talk.". Sisyar calls out.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (8) + 0 = 8
GM Aerondor |
The silence around is heavy, the mists seeming to swallow Sisyar's words. The path does still lead onward, still deeper into the foggy swamp...
Kato Oomsphere |
[b]"We should continue to follow this path. It is possible that these 'Ghosts' are shapeshifters. Perhaps they were hoofed and they changed here."[b] Kato says as he also begins to look upwards and around the area for any signs of where they went. If he does not see tracks or a pathway upwards or a secret door of some sort he will continue to follow the path.
perception (looking for secret door or arial route): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
GM Aerondor |
Onward and deeper into the marsh you travel. The mist firms up around you, getting thicker absorbing smell, sound and sight. It is as if the world beyond has vanished. Well, all apart from the soggy ground. Still, onward the brave Starfinder press, until the path through the swamp starts to become clearer again. A hard-packed earthen trail winding its way between grasping branches beneath a canopy of gigantic mushrooms. A scraggly heap beneath one particularly large mushroom seems to contain at least a few unmoving limbs.
Map updated.
Progress further right from the two bodies looks dangerous. There are a lot of spiky branches. You might be able to avoid them, or you may be able to break them off to clear a path.
Kato Oomsphere |
survival: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29
"Good eyes Dora. We should progress to the left of the bodies." Kato then continues to move around the bodies and futher into the forest after investigating the bodies.
Perception (investigate bodies): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
GM Aerondor |
Kato investigates the bodies. Both are Yeti, and both are very dead. Each has multiple puncture wounds to the chest. When he investigates the second body, Kato lets up a yap of surprise and jumps back, as he gets a small shock from its fur.
What he also notices is the tracks that the pair left through the swamp. A clear trail of uprooted trees and bushes that were ripped and broken to allow the yeti easier access in the thick terrain.
The only way forward seems to be past the thorns.
Which you could probably break reasonably easily without risk, or avoid by each making a perception or survival check to pick a clear path through the thicket.
Talltree |
Talltree casts a quick cantrip (detect magic) and looks for magical auras in the area, especially on the bodies, before searching with more mundane skills.
Perception check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Sisyar |
Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20
Sisyar attempts to find a path without thorns.
GM Aerondor |
There are no magical auras on the bodies. However the whole swamp does have some low level magical resonance to it, as if some type of magic is common here. But no active spells. Imagine it as the sound of insects when you walk in the wood. Quite easy to just completely miss unless you are looking for it, but you could not make out the sound of one particular insect.
Meanwhile Sisyar slips through the barrier of thorns without difficulty.
Kato Oomsphere |
Kato will follow through the barrier of thorns.
Survival: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
"This Yeti was electrically charged. These 'Ghosts' may have some type of electrical attack. If they were in fact killed by the ghosts. These puncture wounds could have come from these brambles and thorns or from their assailant. If you have protection from electricity, I suggest you use it.
GM Aerondor |
Kato also slips through the thorns without difficulty. The wounds on the Yeti are much bigger than normal thorns would make.
GM Aerondor |
Oww. Ouch, arghh. Talltree manages to avoid breaking the thorns, but they share no such consideration for his more delicate... chitin.
Tall tree has taken ouch: 1d4 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14 damage from all the thorns
