Kato walks around, trying to get a feel for what is happening. But just looking at the screens won't tell him much. If he wants to know what is going on he'll have to try actually using the machines.
But you can keep that roll if you like.

With the help of Dora 34, Kato starts working at one of the consols trying to figure what it does.
I will keep that roll but add two for a total of 29.

As Kato starts to type, the door to the room vanishes, replaced by solid, featureless concrete as a cool, mechanical voice speaks. “Greetings, interlopers. Your behavior thus far has been noted. Final adjustments to the study have been made, and the building has been sealed for your personal safety. Commencing Duskmire sterilization protocols. Thank you!” With that, a deep and ominous hum fills the room

The shirren freezes in disbelief. "Wait, weren't others released from their experiments once they were done?" They frantically scan the controls for some way to cancel the sterilization.

Interestingly... Talltree realises a couple of things, firstly there is no routine called "sterilization protcol" currently operation in the computer.
Secondly, there are indeed records of previous "experiments".. that he may be able to dig into next round.

Sisyar calls out, not wholly expecting a response. "Sterilization protocol? What's that?". He freezes in place, somewhat terrified of what's about to happen.
Kato Oomsphere

"Oops. That can't be good. I recommend we activate our environmental protection in case this room tries to fill with gas." Kato will activate his environmental protection and try to gather some more information from the computer terminals as to what exactly is going on.

Kato continues to work at the computer. While he discovers nothing more about sterilisation, he does find what looks like a results file. A 6s scan shows just the highlights.
Gnolls: 2
Yeti: 3
Unicorn: 3
Dora stands transfixed in horror.
The humming becomes louder, and the pulsing light in the centre of the room speeds up.
Is that your heart beating faster, or some subsonic indication of impeding doom ?

"That sterilization protocol hasn't sounded even good for a vesk, I think they're not going to delete it and start over, quickly check the computers in case you locate something about that subroutine in the system"
Dora 34

Dora looks around to see if she can notice anything about what is happening.
physical science: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20
(perception +7, engineering +12 if one of these is more appropriate in the GM's judgement)
Sisyar

Sisyar looks around the room, hoping to spot anything magical. "This is just not natural."
Cast Detect Magic
GM Aerondor

Sisyar detects a bit of magic in the area, but it is primarily a high-tech environment. As Dora looks around, she notices hidden speakers in the walls of the room, it sounds like the rumbling is coming from them, rather than anything else.
Meanwhile Talltree starts to download a large amount of information about previous simulations involving the three groups.
An engineering check may still reveal more information.
The hum rises it pitch slowly as the light in the centre of the room starts to brighten. Significantly.

Talltree notices that the power readings displayed on the monitors don't show any surges or increased strain on the systems of the facility...

Vutrul prepares his weapon and adjusts the environmental protections of his armor, "if this is the end it has been a pleasure to share this last moment with you"

"Looks like the Unicorn and Yetis are tied for dominance. I wonder what that means exactly... Talltree, while you keep working on these computers I will investigate the light in the center." Kato then moves to the middle of the room and investigates the structure that is creating the light.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
@GM A: I am not sure what would be the best check. Right now I am trying to see what it is doing and if it is dangerous I would like to stop it. Kato has a +8 engineering if that is more relevant.
Sisyar
|
Sisyar continues his magic detection, hoping to pinpoint the source - whether its from a spell, a magic item, or another effect, in addition to the caster level of the effect.
GM Aerondor
|
And as if they were listening, the machines suddenly beep and power-down.
The door reappears.
A final scan of the room onfirms that the pillar in the center is a sensor node with massive energy usage and output. You further learn that the information gathered by the equipment in the room is being sent somewhere else, but exactly where remains unknown.

Sisyar walks up tot he door and slowly opens it. "That was... interesting..."
GM Aerondor

You also get an urgent message through on your coms unit. "Starfinders!! Report in!". In fact, you have roughly four days worth of increasingly urgent sounding messages...
Talltree
|
Talltree gets on the comm. "We're fine. Not much happened, and we'll report when we get a chance." They click off, the telepathic sense of their amusement washing over the party.
GM Aerondor
|
"Time to pull out Starfinders. Who knows how long we'll keep the coms up for. Get out while the going is good..." comes through Vex, on voice now.
Any last things you want to do before exiting?
Kato Oomsphere

"I wonder what happened to the residence of the cavern. Was the sterilization happening outside of the room? We should go check on the Mukfurs on our way out."
Kato would like to see if anything happened to the Yetis and ask them if they noticed anything different lately. Beyond that he is good to go.
Sisyar

Sisyar, feeling a bit anxious to get out. "This place is so unnatural. I don't like it. Sooner we can get out, the better."
GM Aerondor

The team makes their way back to the entrance, which is now open. Bidding a farewell to the inhabitants you return to Vex for your debrief...
"So what happened?"
Talltree

| 1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Talltree pulls up some notes on their personal comm. "This seems to be some sort of sociological/cultural experimental facility. In our case, we were put into a large artificial environment with three factions--a band of yetis calling themselves the Mukfur tribe; a group of peaceful agrarian gnolls, if you can imagine such a thing; and a single unicorn with a rocket launcher." The shirren shakes their head. "The experiment was to run until one group was able to dominate the other two, and the environment was sealed until that occurred. We were unable to get out or even communicate beyond the walls of the environment, so unless we wanted to settle down we had to bring about an end to the study. We did so by establishing peaceful relations among the factions, and some amount of cooperation. However, the final phase of the experiment was apparently reserved for the group that succeeded. The experimenters set up a situation where it appeared that all of the creatures remaining in the test environment would be killed. Once we recognized this, the test finally ended, and we were able to leave. The rest of the details are in the records." Talltree looks to the others. "Have I missed anything major? I didn't mention becoming honorary members of the Mukfur tribe, I know."
Sisyar

"I think that's the most important part.". Sisyar pats his pocket, where he still has some mushrooms - for later.
