Eilyne left it to the others to try and convince the old woman to come with them. She was busy trying to wrack her brain for alternative places of safety. She didn't trust that this fort would be left unmolested and, when the smoke from it's direction was seen, she knew that they would find no safety there.
Eilyne quickly realized the mistake she was making in searching for safety, she had been too long among humans and not her own kind. If you wanted a place to hide in nature you looked for one thing above all other. You found a cave, preferably a system with multiple ways in and out. That in mind Eilyne tried to recall if there were any cave systems she had come across that might serve their needs.

Good thinking, Eilyne. I was also wondering where to go next.
In a generally disagreeable mood, Tarrow kicks stones for a few minutes upon seeing the smoke cloud from the direction of the Fort. Likely, even their fastest scouts would not have made it to the Fort in time to warn them, much less help prepare them for war.
He wondered what kind of force was stationed there? Surely, the human occupants would be vigilant against any threat! Well, perhaps not. But the goblin horde would not know that, and would marshal their full force to attack, lest they be turned back. So either the goblin army marches and burns as one, or it is sufficiently massive as to hold those locations while advancing ever outward. It was a frightening thought.
Looking up at the sky, the halfling considers what he knows about other settlements in the territory.

Eilyne thinks if she knows of any cave systems, and cannot recall any.
If its on the Map in Roll20, everyone knows of them. The rolls would be how much you know about them . So it would have to be a specific community
Bedding down for the night and assigning 6 watches of three each. The night moves on uneventful until the middle of Barhador's watch when there is howling in the distance that gradually gets closer. Its obvious to the experienced hunter that a pack of wolves has picked up the refugees scent.
As time moves on toward the end of it, he sees several sets of eyes prowl around the edge of the camp. looking it over, seeing no easy prey the pack moves on within a few long tense minutes.
Morning comes and Lirosa and Taidel move out to do some early morning hunting. While several of the farmers begin scavenging the nearby forest for edible roots and fruits. Meanhile the leadership calls a meeting to discuss where to next. Attending the meeting are
Vane (who is eager to help), Keening (who complains and is negative all the time), Rhyna (who is effervescent with positivity), Jet (who is a logistical organizer. efficient and on point), Aubrey (who is pragmatic and well spoken), Veld (who is straight forward and knowledgeable), and the party.
use the folks you have in the leadership group to ask questions of and plan the next step. Once you feel ready to move on, when 4 of the 6 say this is where we are going. Ill advance game.

I based it on who needs sleep for spells, and who can see in the dark, and who was a combatant among the refugees and then leveled leaders or newcomers. I left Aubrey and Veld off for reasons if injury and age. And chose Sarah over Moira because of dedication to cause. adjust as desired

'Well that's a good sign,' Pleased to see several of he townsfolks helping carry the load, Brunner dons his armor and joins the others around the small cooking fire. While he eats some poridge from the communal pot, he sits and thinks. Praying quietly for the strategy to be able to protect the people Torag had entrusted them with.
After finishing his breakfast, he draws a small map in the dirt with a stick. marking the bridge, the groups aproxomate location, the location of the fort and the lumber camp. He asks, "Uir first priority is tae keep these fowk safe. if th' enemy has awreddy attacked th' fort, shooldnae we heed th' opposite direction?"
Dragging the stick towards the small creek and the hunters cabin, he looks around at the others, who had started to represent the townsfolks. "iz anyain ken onie hunters fa bide in th' area."
He then points to the north-east and then the south-east. "Frae thaur we can decide if we ur headin' north ur sooth, dependin' oan whaur we hink th' enemy main lat at next.

Tarrow gathers with Brunner and watches him sketch the map in the dirt. "Another fort waits further to the northeast. If the hobgoblin army is consistent, they will continue to raze it next.
"Now may be our best chance to escape the Forest. We could cross the trail they have already passed, heading west to the Plains. Perhaps salvation lies at the great Dwarven city, Kraggodan, eh Brunner?"

Shrugging, not sure of the size of the vanguard that made it across the bridge before they destroyed it, Brunner answers Tarrow. "Mebbe maybe nae. we need tae gie these fowk someplace safe until we can learn mair. "
His eyes moistening slightly, "Th' stoatin city ay Kraggodan is bin sealed awa', thaur is nae entry." He leaves off the fact that if it had been open he would have returned home long ago.
Looking towards the others, "Th' gobo vanguard has nae reason tae venture intae th' woods. mebbe th' Chernasado Redoobt is still manned an' has information 'at we dinnae."

Arkhan wakes early just before dawn to commune with the rising Sun. The Storm Druid looks about the camp of refugees with a shake of his hooded head.
After an hour of wishing for Rull to smite them all with His Lightning; the frowning 1/2 Orc joins the others for porridge, coffee, and decision making.
He stands looking over the shoulders of both Tarrow and Brunner. Chewing his porridge, Arkhan begins kicking a bit of dust over Tarrow's path back across the Vanguard.
If Rull suddenly looks down on our passage; and gives two s#%&s, he may create some cover with fog.
The 1/2 Orc smiles at the Halfling.
But I f#*@ing doubt it.
The Druid places a friendly hand on Tarrow's shoulder.
My apologies, friend Tarrow. This situation is grating on my already Orc-frayed nerves. This is the second Horde that I have had the privilege to run from.
Arkhan points to the East.
We think the Legion has sacked Fort Nunner. We expect them to proceed to Fort Trevelay; or Fort Ristin. So, why not drop these refugees off at the Hunter's Camp, so we more capable scout out the Legion's trail, and, perhaps, provide valuable information to whichever Fort may be still standing.

'I don't like the idea of leaving the folks someplace to go off exploring.' Shaking his head. "Since we blew up th' brig th' bulk ay th' army is trapped oan th' other side ay th' Ragin' river." He looks at his friend Ethan, "Ah dornt loch th' idea ay leavin' th' folks tae gang lookin' fur th' enemies vanguard. We need tae fin' someplace safe an' easily defendable fur 'em afair we gang pickin' a barnie."
He pauses, looking at the townsfolk leadership that had joined them. "Dae ye folks hae onie ideas?" Asking the ranger, "Aubri hoo mony fighters at th' chernasado redoobt? an' is it a defendable position?"

Aubri looked down at the map and you could see she was visibly shaken . She says low and full of emotion I was stationed at Fort Nunder before my accident.
Then raising her head and wiping tears away. she clears her throat, takes a moment and with only a slightly stronger voice said The Redoubt is manned by a few squads of Rangers. Not many, maybe 10 plus support staff.

Veld tapped the map, You mentioned the Hunters Cabin. Keloch and Pyla his lynx used to stop by once every other week to trade small game for tubers and spices I grow. Hes a good man. I havent seen him in about a month though.
She then taps the place marked as the Troglodyte Caverns. The Children of the Stone Tribe. They can be dangerous opponents. Ive known of several hunters and seekers of knowledge within the Fang Wood that have ended their lives trying to open relations with them. Viscious and territorial. They are lead by their Shaman Ighiz and Handiss The barbaric protector of the tribe. The caves run deep though, and if we
could clear them, it would indeed be a good base.

I would prefer to have these dangerous hunters working alongside us, rather than killing them for their cave. Besides, there are likely to be young there, and I do not like to think of slaughtering them, even if it is out of perceived necessity."

"If we show up as a group of refugees, the Children of the Stone will see us as weak, and find us unlikely to provide value in an alliance. If we go in as a capable party of adventurers, they are likely to see us as a threat. I don't like the odds of going there, and we would still need to find a place to secure the citizenry. It can't be a destination, just a stop, but I like the odds of finding more woodsmen and possibly information at the Hunter's Cabin. The redoubt is small enough, they shouldn't be targeted for a while. Maybe after the cabin?"

Realizing what Aubri had suffered, Brunner bows his head, "Ah am truly sorry fur yer loss lassie."
He pauses for a moment thinking about ten more well armed fighters. As Veld shares about the hunters cabin and Troglodytes. 'I like the idea of a well defended underground position. And Troglodytes are tough fighters. But she's right viscous and territorial.
Nodding in agreement with Ethan, he looks froom Veld then to Barhador. Nodding in agreement Barhador. "Gonnae th' hunters cabin first makes sense.
He then turns back to Aubri, and asks about the redoubts defenses, trying to determine if it's a save location for the refugees. Diz th' Redoobt hae th' room fur thirty mair fowk an' is it a defendable position?"
Looking to Veld, "Veld, thenk ye fur yer information, it is invaluable." Looking from Veld to Ethan to Barhador and then towards the sighing Arkhan. "First tae th' hunter's lodge. if th' Redoobt isnae safe ur disnae hae th' room fur us we press north." Pausing, "Th' People ay th' Staine ur an ancient fowk. We will approach them cautioosly but honestly." He shrugs. "Mebbe th' will see th' Gobo's as th' threat they ur an' they will join wi' us. if nae we press oan." Looking as serious as possible. "I'll nae be a part ay drivin' innocent creatures frae their haem. 'at woods make us nae better than th' Gobo's."

Tarrow offers a relieved smile to Brunner. He would not, under any circumstances, be party to killing the troglodytes for the purpose of claiming their cave system as a refuge. He would sooner return to Phaendar and fight every last hobgoblin that came from that cursed tower.
Feeling better about the direction of the caravan from here, he wonders if it might not be at least neighborly to attempt to warn the troglodytes of the horde. But perhaps the hobgoblins care only for the flesh of those that are less able to defend themselves, monsters that they are.

The decision made to head to Keloch's cabin the group set out as they had prior the day before. Making their way through the forest, The Hunters in the lead scouting a path and guiding them toward Keloch's cabin.
They make good time travelling through the Fangwood, break for a bite to eat and to drink their fill before refilling their waterskins with the groups magical water. Then on the road. Its mid afternoon with the plan to make the Hunters Cabin by nightfall when Lirosa returns and says she found a spring ahead with a lot of bushes with berries that are edible, and several patches of tubers that could be harvested to boost their food supply if the group could break for 20 minutes or so. She estimates a good amount of food their 10 provision points

Due to his short legs and slow speed, Brunner again places himself behind he refugees. Bringing up rear, he encourages those he can as he keeps an eye out for anyone coming up behind them. Hearing the group spread the word about the tubers and such, Brunner presses through the townsfolk in time to hear the wise elf saying they should stop and harvest the berries and tubers. Nodding in agreement, Brunner blurts out, "That's a braw idea, I've a gift fur pickin' berries, Bein' built sae law tae th' grin an' aw. I'll gang help." Moving to the berry bush, Brunner takes off his stone helmet and starts filling it with blackberries.

Hearing the voices Brunner looks up. Seeing the goblins he drops the helmet full of berries, loosening the Dorn-Dergar as he moves towards the nearest., "Gobo's! at leest thes time they cam tae us insteid ay makin' us rin them doon." Swinging the ball and chain he releases it, aiming at the nearest enemy. Missing the hobgoblin, he bounces the stone ball off of a nearby sapling.

The glen had done much to improve Tarrow's spirit, the sight of running water amongst greenery and the bushes full of ripe berries were the perfect elixir for his deepening mood.
