"I didn't get to punch anything alive! That monolith is going to get it!" Zabu says as the last of their opponents tries to get away and goes down in a puddle of fire and acid.
He starts wading after Lazarus, his head barely above the surface of the water.

Seeing the others busy with their unconscious companions, Teja sighs and approaches the monolith, wading awkwardly through the water.

Jayma was beginning to impress even herself with her recent spellcasting prowess, but deep down she knew that regardless of how well she wielded the mighty energies at her command, much of her success still depended on the fickle nature of the gods. She wasn't a particularly religious person, but perhaps now was as good a time as any to offer a quick prayer to her patron Shyka for her recent string of good fortune.
When Lazarus offers her further compliments, Jayma makes a dismissive motion with her hand, but it's clear that she's delighted to hear them anyway. "It was nothing my good doctor; anyone would have done the same under the circumstances", but adding to herself, "though perhaps not with quite the same flair".
As the last of the leeches sinks away dead into the raging waters, Jayma turns her attention to the monolith. When Lazarus, Zabu, and Teja head over to inspect it more closely, Jayma shakes her head in disbelief. "You're not all seriously thinking of going over there, are you? I'm pretty sure I can blast it into little pieces from the shore and save you all a lot of trouble."
When it is clear that her entreaties are for naught, she shrugs. "Fine! Do it your way. If you need my help, I'll be safe here on the shore watching the show."

"Unless you can convince the river to push me upstream? Like you did earlier?" suggests a hopeful Teja.
Jayma looks at Teja to see how serious she was, but it was clear the girl didn't understand what she was asking. "My dear Teja, I'm afraid that the pushing part of the spell is merely a side-effect of the smashing part of the spell and the two cannot be separated. I've thought it over, but I am quite at a loss as to how to help get you all to the monolith. All that is left to me here is to offer shouts of encouragement from the sidelines."
She then finds herself a nice flatish rock to sit on near the shore and watches as her colleagues battle the roiling waters caused by the monolith, occasionally shouting encouragement from the sidelines. "Yay! Good job! Keep up the good fight! You can do it!" Every now and then, a spray of water splashes on her or the wind ruffles her hair out of place, but with a wave of the hand and a "restore", everything returns to its usual place.
Action 1 (◆): Cast a Spell: Prestidigitation (Tidy)
Jayma is still wary of more otters and leeches, so she continuously refreshes her protection spell. It wasn't much, but it was better than nothing.

Action 3 (◆): Shout Encouragement

Fortitude DC 18: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 10 + 2 = 24
Forging his way upstream, the lanky elf reaches the monolith. He seems to have little to no trouble with the currents. Once he's there, he works with Teja to start deciphering the runes. "Ahhh, excellent, my dear lady. You made it too. Perhaps if we work together..." He offers an Arcane perspective.

I realize the Arcana check is 2 actions, but I wasn't sure if I could start the first action on this turn? Or if it happens to be a crit, maybe it's only 1 action?

GM Watery Soup |

It's 2 actions and technically you'd have to do one next turn, but I'm not going to prolong the encounter. Failing the skill check causes damage, which is the only reason I kept you in Initiative.
Teja and Dr. Lazarus reach the monolith and start moving the symbols around. The runes go dark, and the waters stop surging.
All the remaining energy in the monolith suddenly shoots into the air, arcing to the southwest and disappearing over the horizon.
End of combat!
The receding water reveals the remains of the otters' previous victims, tangled in the bushes. Among the items still on the body, which appears to be that of an elf dressed in hide, the party finds a coyote cloak.
You are free to rest, so it is assumed you will all get back to full health in due time, as well as full spells after a night's rest. I will resume the overland trek, but offer you the chance to (a) change your heading based on the energy discharge, (b) contact Gorm Greathammer using a feather token, and (c) decide who gets the coyote cloak.

![]() |

When they disable the monolith, Dr. Lazarus slaps Teja on the back. "Well done, my dear. Well done." As he makes his way back through the receding river, he sees a fellow elf in the reeds.
He sighs sadly, "No doubt the work of those pesky otters." He pulls the body off to the side. He carefully removes the cloak and explains, "If I'm not mistaken..." under his breath, he adds, "...and I seldom am... this is a Coyote Cloak. It should help with foraging if someone wants it." He hands it to whomever is nearby. Before heading back up the cliff to see who needs healing, Lazarus pulls out a crowbar from his pack. Together with his hammer, he crafts a makeshift grave for the recovered body. "May Alseta guide you on your journey through your final portal."
Back with the others, the Doctor pulls out his healer's tools and sets to work on bandaging everyone up.
With Assurance in Medicine, Ward Medic to heal 2 at a time, and Continual Healing to heal every 10 minutes, it shouldn't take more than an hour to get everyone to full health.
After tending to his patients, he pours himself a brandy. In between sips, he asks, "Is our plan to keep with our original course?" He takes another sip and offers to pour a round for anyone who is interested.
I must have forgotten about the Feather Token to contact Gorm. If that's a thing, the good Doctor is in favor of providing a status report to his faction leader.

![]() |

Teja offers a short bow. "I must say your alignment of arcane energies with the symbols was a masterstroke." she adds, returning the compliment.
Returning to the riverbank, Teja takes out a sketch book and starts to record the scene, putting particular emphasis on the monolith and its runes. "Who knows what this might tell us?" she says.
As for the cloak. "I suspect this would be best for our more skilled hunters. It is unlikely to make much of a difference for me."
She stands and offers a silent prayer for the dead elf.
"Those otters were a bit odd don't you think? Not normally aggressive or so large.."

![]() |

"Aaaargh! So I don't even get to smash the rock?!" Zabu exclaims as the two nerds deactivate the monolith. He does go up and give it a punch but it is a desultory one at best.
When Dr. Lazarus starts burying the dead, Zabu helps out, lending muscle where needed.
Afterwards, he lays claim to the coyote cloak. Somehow, the mangy fur that its made of fits in perfectly with his outfit.
"I say we follow that energy trail. We all know I'm no scholar but it doesn't take a genius to figure that energy was heading off to the other site. Unless Jayma has taken to the outdoor life and wants to keep enjoying our little trail ride?" he grins at the other gnome.
He has no particular opinion about communicating with Gorm (although his player thinks its a good idea.)

Jayma watches from a distance as Teja and Lazarus work on the monolith. She's half-hoping they'll run into trouble and give her the green light to pound it into dust from shore, but alas it was not to be. When the monolith goes dark and the blast of energy shoots into the air, Jayma leaps to her feet clapping and cheering at the sight. "Woo, the finale was well worth the wait! Good job everyone."
When Zabu mentions following the energy trail, Jayma agrees. "Mr Creed's views mirror my own, and it is not just because it may well shorten this little outing we're on. The next ritual site is almost certainly in the direction in which the monolith energy arced, so we should head that way. If we find nothing of interest before hitting the edge of our assigned region, then we can rethink our search plan."
Once the discussion is over, Jayma heads over to collect Princess and Twyl. "I hope you two have been behaving yourselves while I was away." She's only joking, of course, Twyl and Princess had become fast friends during the many days of exploring and barely noticed all the monolith related hullabaloo that went on while they were playing their little games with each other.

A few hours after you send off the bird feather token, a message arrives. “Message received. Our abyssoergometer indicates abyssal energy reduced by half. Keep up the good work!”
Hearing the message from Gorm, Dr. Lazaurs mutters, "That reminds me. My abyssoergometer just broke. I must make a note to get a new one." You're not sure if he's serious or just attempting a little scholarly humor. He takes another sip of brandy.
With the talk of the next ritual site, Lazarus makes some notes in his writing pad.
He gives up the lead on the current ritual site, and if the GM allows, Pursues a Lead on the next ritual site to the southwest.
With everyone healed up, the Doctor agrees it's sound to follow Zabu's and Jayma's plan of following the energy to the southwest.

The party moves out of the hills and back into the forest, following the direction of the energy. Smoke billows from the forest up ahead, and soon enough, the party discovers that a massive forest fire is raging through the whole region.
In addition to being difficult terrain, much of the terrain is on fire. Unlike in forest and mountain hexes, there is no check to speed up exploration of these dangerous areas, nor is there a possibility of Foraging.
Travel through the thick smoke and intense heat of this region is taxing, requiring every character to attempt a DC 16 Fortitude save.
The ruins of a tower built into a low hillside is nearby. Though a majority of the structure has been destroyed by the passage of time (and offers no protections against the fires), the remnants of the upper floor remains, partially collapsed against the hillside.

Perhaps Zabu breaths too deeply, perhaps his nose is overly sensitive. Whatever the case, he begins coughing once they get into the smoke and cannot seem to stop for any length of time, occasionally having to stop and bend at the waist as he hacks and chokes, his eyes watering profusely.
He doesn't have much to say when they spot the tower.

As the smoke appears on the horizon and the flames become more apparent the further they progress, Jayma says, "It looks like we're heading in the right direction. It wouldn't surprise me to discover that this fire is being fueled by the supposed fire-based ritual site we're looking for. I didn't think I'd ever say this, but the raging waters of the last ritual site may not have been all that bad after all."
She catches a whiff of smoke and coughs. Princess grunts and drops her ears. Jayma pats her on the neck to calm her. "There there, Princess. I know it's no fun, but we've got to push on. The sooner we find and disable that site, the sooner we can leave." She coughs again and regularly casts minor spells (Prestidigitation) to clean the air around her and remove any soot stains left on her clothes by dropping ash.

Despite the harsh conditions, she manages to keep her energy level up. She's looking forward to dealing with the second ritual site, and that excitement keeps her spirits up. Dr. Lazarus climbs up to the intact portion. On the partially collapsed upper floor, he finds a large, gold tube, engraved with cyclops runes, lying near the corroded remains of three metal legs.
The whole setup has 1 Bulk; assuming Dr. Lazarus brings it back down, anyone can attempt a Crafting or Astronomy Lore check to identify it.
Zabu will be fatigued traveling onward (I'm assuming you press on to the southwest), and waiting on Jayma and Hopper's Fort saves.

"May I have a look?" enquires Teja.
Gesturing to the tower she admits "You don't see any cyclops ruins up north. I suppose they never made it that far? Or easier pickings in warm lands?"

"Oh! A telescope!" she says, admiring the tube. "How wonderful."
Looking around the hill top she adds. "If we set it up here, we may be able to spot things more easily. Of course the smoke doesn't help."

![]() |

GM, you said you're waiting on Jayma's Fort Save, but looked like she included it in her last post. A nat-20 actually!
Dr. Lazarus climbs down with the large gold tube and hands it to Teja so she can have a look at the telescope. When the rogue mentions setting it up, Lazarus points out, "A fine idea in theory, my dear. Alas, it appears to be broken." He considers a moment and pulls out some tools from his repair kit. He starts tinkering while the group is determining our course.
Crafting DC 19: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (7) + 14 = 21
The Crafting check was probably to identify it. But (just for flavor) Lazarus would try to repair it.
"There we are. Things should be a bit more in focus now." He smiles and hands it back to Teja.

Yes, I included Jayma's fortitude save in her last post, and yes, of course it turned out to be a nat-20. Sorry for hogging all the luck, Zabu.

The rest of the team tries to comfort Zabu as they head deeper into the fire. A chipper Hopper doesn't seem to mind at all, and tries to comfort Zabu with toasted marshmallows.
Day 17
Supplies remaining: 31
Visible whenever the group catches a glimpse of the sky is a column of inky, black smoke that seems out of place, as if it were from a different sort of fire altogether.
The intense heat makes most of the terrain impassable. Following streams, rocky ridges, and other paths free of fire, the Pathfinders reach the source of the strange smoke.
Shielded from the heat by rocks on either side, this narrow ravine winds close to the column of roiling black smoke that stands out against the paler gray smoke of the forest fire. Rough natural stairs lead along either side of large boulder to the higher ground beyond. Just visible beyond the rock, the source of the foul column, is a small stone monolith, wreathed in flames and covered in glowing runes.
From the previous interaction, the group would suspect that this monolith could be deactivated in a similar fashion to the other.
See Slide 8. You will start in the yellow box.
Terrain notes:
Rock: The rock formation in the center of the map rises 15 feet from the floor of the gully where the PCs begin, and requires a successful DC 20 Athletics check to Climb. The natural steps on either side are rough, creating difficult terrain as they rise 10 feet to the upper area where the monolith sits. The trees and squares with fire are both difficult terrain.
Fire: The supernatural forest fire, sustained by abyssal energy leaking from the monolith, rages strongest in this area. Creatures that start their turn in a square with fire or on the rock with the monolith will take fire damage.
I've marked the rocks (Athletics check) with blue tint, and the stairs (difficult terrain) with pink tint. I have not marked the forest and fire (which are both also difficult terrain) because I found it to be visually distracting. I can remove the others too if it's not helpful.

She turns to Twyl now sitting up in her saddle and says, ”Take care of Princess while I’m gone and make sure she doesn’t stray. I’d rather not have to walk out of here once we’re done.”
Turning to face the monolith on the hill, she considers her options. ”No amount of help from my ancestors is going to get me up those rocks and I’m not walking up there without a phalanx of defenders. What to do? What, To. Do?” A second later, she hops in excitement. ”Oh, I know! Let’s find out just how tough these monoliths really are.”
Snatching at the air in front of her three times as if catching flying embers, Jayma gathers her now closed hands together before her. Approaching the monolith, Dr. Lazarus sees the subject of his next lead. He hops off his cart with his throwing hammer in hand. "Be a good lad and stay out of trouble, won't you Chauncey?" He leaves his halfling driver back with Jayma's growing menagerie.
Considering the situation, Lazarus takes a cautious approach. He starts to follow Teja up the stairs. Halfway across, the Doctor stops and readies himself for an attack should he spy any enemies.
Actions: ◆ Stride 15' (30' speed thru difficult terrain), ◆◆ Ready Action: Strike (hammer throw when he sees enemies w/in range)

GM Watery Soup |

Zabu starts climbing up the rocks. Zabu, I forgot to put on your tracker that you're fatigued (-1 to AC and saving throws).
Jayma starts sending missiles at the monolith. A few small cracks appear, but it's clear that most of the damage was absorbed by the monolith's hard shell.
Teja moves forward. In the fires, she sees six creatures - three that look like humanoids made of fire, and three that look like firey foxes. As she approaches, the the flames wreathing the monolith flare with
incandescent light! Teja, DC 17 Fortitude save.
Dr. Lazarus moves up. As you see the creatures that Teja sees, you do not need to ready an action - you can throw at the closest firey humanoid (45' = 3rd range increment) for one action if you want, or move closer and throw. Also, please check your tagline - you should have begun the encounter at full health.

Seeing the creatures near the monolith, Dr. Lazarus attempts to devise an attack strategy against the nearest blue fox.
Devise a Stratagem: 1d20 ⇒ 1 (Roll is used for subsequent attack roll.)
Not seeing a clear path through the flames to his initial target, he sees an opening to reach the green fox nearby. Without the benefit of a strategic attack, he flings his Returning hammer.
+1 Striking Returning Grabthar's Hammer - Range Penalty vs. Green: 1d20 + 12 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 12 - 4 = 24
Damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (1, 3) + 3 = 7

fort: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
Teja peers into the smoke. "Fire creatures... people and... foxes?" she calls out. But a gust of wind blows smoke into her eyes and she has a hard time seeing.

GM Watery Soup |

Dr. Lazarus nails a firey humanoid with his hammer as Teja yelps.
The monolith flares with energy! The closest tree to Teja explodes, sending flaming pine needles in all directions! Red area Teja realizes that, had she been a little closer, she might have been hit.
The Green and Blue Humanoids sputter and pop, ejecting clouds of acrid smoke that conceal them. Grey area They throw flaming sap at Teja.
Green, Flaming Sap: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23
Fire: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 plus 1d4 persistent fire plus sickened
Blue, Flaming Sap: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31
Fire: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 plus 1d4 persistent fire plus sickened sickened 2 on a crit
Purple moves to cover the monolith, and then ejects the same cloud of smoke to conceal the monolith.
Round 1!
Teja (-27 hp, dazzled 0/1, 2d4 persistent fire, Sickened 2)
Dr. Lazarus

Green Firey Humanoid (-7 hp, concealed)
Blue Firey Humanoid (concealed)
Purple Firey Humanoid (concealed)
Fumbus
Hopper
Red Firey Fox
Orange Firey Fox
Yellow Firey Fox
Okay, so the map is getting kind of crowded, but it's necessary. The red area (exploding tree) is mostly for your benefit, just so you know what the monolith can do. But the grey area does function as concealment, so include a DC 5 flat check if you fire into that area, and make a Fortitude save if you enter.

Hopper looks at Teja and yells
"I am coming lass!" he yells as Wolfie begins to run.

Hustling forward, Fumbus runs toward the flames.
"Ooohhhh...", as he stares slackjaw at the supernatural fire. "Special fire! This is holy place!"
Three action move
Part way up the steps, the creatures emerge from the flame. "Not supposed to do that. Flame is good. People flame is bad"

Watching his companions get closer to the action, Dr. Lazarus shouts over the din of the burning and crackling forest, "I do say, perhaps it's best to attack from range. Let them come to us." He shakes his head at the party rushing into danger and attempts to calculate an attack strategy.
Devise a Stratagem: 1d20 ⇒ 19 (Roll is used for subsequent attack roll.)
Known Weakness means Devise Stratagem includes a free Recall Knowledge check. (Arcana +13 or Nature +10)
The investigator sees the battlefield unfold clearly in his mind and realizes he has an opening if he moves forward. From his new position, adjacent to Teja, Lazarus has a clear shot at the injured green fire beast. He squints to focus as best he can and flings his hammer end-over-end into the smoke.
+1 Striking Returning Grabthar's Hammer (w/ Stratagem) + Range Penalty (vs. GREEN): (19) + 14 - 2 = 31
Damage + Strategic Strike: 2d6 + 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (6, 6) + (2, 4) + 3 = 21

Even as the last set of force bolts left her hand, she could feel that the first two were weak, so it was with no great surprise that they appeared to do minimal damage to the monolith. She kicks herself mentally for the bad casting. ”Oh poo!” Still, weak as they were, she had expected them to have done more damage than they actually had. Jayma surmises that the monolith has a hard shell protecting it from attacks... but just how hard was it?
Did Jayma’s Magic Missiles do any damage at all? The description of the impact suggests that they did (so the resistance would presumably be < 9), but unlike the other damaged bad guys, the monolith is not listed in the status as having taken any damage.
Jayma is not so easily dissuaded and is a strong proponent of the if at first, you don't succeed, try, try again approach to magical pedagogy (no stuffy book learning for her, no indeed). She closes her eyes and recenters her mind on the task at hand. Repeating her earlier hand motions, she makes subtle changes; in the positioning of her fingers; in the speed and direction of their movement; to try and focus additional energy into her force bolts. When she is satisfied, Jayma calls out ”powerful projectiles pound pernicious pest” and releases her new set of force bolts at the monolith.
Actions 1, 2, 3 (◆◆◆): Cast a Spell: Magic Missile (3-actions) All 3 missiles targeting Monolith
Concealed DC 5 Flat Check: 1d20 ⇒ 5
Magic Missile 1: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 force damage
Magic Missile 2: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 force damage
Magic Missile 3: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 force damage
Three more bolts of energy blast out from her hands and Jayma looks on as her creations find their unerring way to the monolith once again. ”Sigh. Only a little better than the first batch. Maybe it’s time to try something else”. She is so focused on pounding the monolith into submission that she’s barely aware of whatever else is going on around her.

Peering into the smoke, the scholar realizes it is not just the trees on fire, it is her.
"My books!" she cries in horror.
Blinking through the smoke, she tries to smother her flames...
assisted recovery, two actions, flat check; GM to determine DC apparently.: 1d20 ⇒ 14
Almost have them.. almost...
Then, her hands smoking, she remembers the poison that was provided to her. "I wonder if flaming creatures are subject to it.." she muses out loud.
Final action : apply poison. And if that first check was not enough to stop the persistent damage then..
Flaming flatcheck goodness: 1d20 ⇒ 6

Zabu finishes climbing the stones.
Athletics: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
He curses when he sees that the battle is already going. He's missed part of it!
Well, time to make up some time. He charges across the rocks and throws a gauntleted punch at the orange fox.
Spiked Gauntlet: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
Piercing: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Actions - 1.) Finish climbing, 2&3 Sudden Charge (Spiked Gauntlet)

GM Watery Soup |

Arcana: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (16) + 13 = 29
Dr. Lazarus identifies the humanoids as Corrupted Wildfires. They are immune to bleed, fire, paralyzed, poison, and sleep; they also have a weakness to cold damage. They also ignore the concealed condition due to smoke.
This was a crticial success - everyone gets +1 to attack the corrupted wildfires for this round.
Grabthar's hammer flies true, and the wildfire dissipates.
Jayma, I'm sorry I forgot to list the damage to the monolith. It's -2 hp after hardness, and you're free to revise your actions if you want to do something different.
Teja, the DC for assisted recovery is 10. I believe sickened will apply to the flat check, but you made it anyway. Teja pats herself and her books and puts out the fire. I'll allow you to revise your third action if Dr. Lazarus's information changes your mind.
Round 1!
Teja (-27 hp, dazzled 0/1, Sickened 2, revise 1 action?)
Dr. Lazarus
