Alien Archive 3, Creature Companions.
I only need a round to activate the armor, the beast has an automatic EF collar.
They either move away from us, or choke on the smoke, it's a win-win!

GM Valen |

I just realized this encounter may be on a different day than the prior combat. I was thinking Lexicor was out of magic missiles. But if we rested, he has two more.
This encounter took place days after the prior one with the jinsul. Lexicor still has two very viable uses of the unerring magic missile.

GM Valen |

Just a thought. This is a battle we might easily lose if GM keeps making his coin flips.
I've found this to be a very challenging fight in face-to-face play and it can be particullary difficult for low-level party's that are unfamiliar with the creatures and their abilities. I am reluctant to say more at the moment to avoid metagaming.
I will note that, although Gava failed the check, any PC with Mysticism can attempt to identify the creatures as a free action on their turn.

I am going to say I entered this space with my environmental protections activated. After all, Rhub is a Prototype Armor Mechanic. She does not do Drones or that silly stuff. Her whole schtick is ARMOR for everything.

Owww. this round was brutal.
I think Gava's plan still might smoke them.
My best variation. Retreat to the barracks area and hole up for the night. Tomorrow, draw them in and hit them again with the smoke plan when we're rested. The corridors are narrow. If we can trap them in one room, or stretch of corridor, we can kill them.
I put a yellow box around the ideal killing zone.

That could work, but it plays a lot better on a table than pbp. If we all wanna commit to playing this encounter out, with holidays and everything that could go on for a while. I'll go along with the group, of course, but Rilynn just made a successful attack, passed both miss-chances, and still hit herself, so I'm not optimistic about our odds. I don't see the downside in making a full tactical retreat and reporting what we encountered to HQ so they can send in the small army of spellcasters that is needed to win here.

![]() |

Other than the mount, we're in plenty good shape. We could back down and see if any of them is knocked unconscious from the smoke and deal with the remaining ones.

![]() |

You're probably right. I think we've done more damage to ourselves than they have to us.

GMV was rolling ridiculously on redirects in general. Burn shot Meme for 7 on a redirect. Gava hit Yasakaja a couple times. Didn't someone get critted on a redirect?
Not sure if I've figured out all the redirect rules, but ranged attacks that miss redirect. Melee attacks that miss seem to redirect only if some poor ally is in reach. So if we want to go toe to toe, we stick to melee, spread out a little.
If we want to retreat, Burn can cover it. Barring a redirect to himself, he's still in good shape on SP/HP, and has the best AC in the party.
Lexicor's probably dropped orange. That would leave only three of them.
And Rilynn didn't really hurt herself. She just didn't break through the DR.
Let's see what happens this round. But if we retreat, I'd prefer not to quit the mission. Knowing what we know now, with a fully re-charged team, we can take these things.

It has been brought to my attention that I have been misapplying one of the creatures' special abilities during this combat. My apologies for the oversight.
Among the special abilities of the creatures, which are hobkins, is the following:
Out of Phase (Su) Hobkins exist slightly out of phase with the Material Plane, causing all ranged attacks against them to suffer a 50% miss chance. This ability functions as displacement.
Unfortunately, I have also been applying the Out of Phase special ability to melee attacks as well.
Having reviewed the posts with this in mind, I do not see any instances in which applying the special ability to a melee attack has differed the outcome with respect to inflicting damage to a PC or failing to inflict damage on a NPC.
If you spot such an instance, please let me know and I will correct it.
The hobkins does have a separate, special ability that has been causing most of the SP/HP loss. As my misapplication of the Out of Phase ability may have caused some confusion and since the PCs have had several rounds to see the ability in action (and to allow you to check to see that I am applying this ability correctly), I am presenting this other special ability here:
Collateral Damage (Su) Whenever an attack fails to damage a hobkins, whether due to a low attack roll, a miss chance, or a failure to penetrate DR, the hobkins can redirect the attack to any target in range of the original attack (if any), including objects. The attack can’t be redirected against the original attacker, though it can be redirected against the original attacker’s gear (but not the weapon used to make the original attack). The attacker rolls a new attack and damage roll against the new target, and the attack is considered to have the penetrating weapon special quality.

![]() |

A one-on-one will prevent collateral damage indeed (outside of some broken gear), and the creatures themselves aren't that powerful.
I think we should spread out, I don't mind taking some AoO while I use my pistol on one of them, as long as it doesn't land on anyone else if it misses.

![]() |

Meme was doing Entropic Strikes as melee and not ranged. The special ability caused a critical (against orange) to miss and a regular hit (against yellow) to miss.

![]() |

Any of my melees that hit should've been diverted anyway, because I didn't bypass the DR. T_T

GM Valen |

Meme was doing Entropic Strikes as melee and not ranged. The special ability caused a critical (against orange) to miss and a regular hit (against yellow) to miss.
This attack would not have dropped orange due to DR. So, this this casting of magic missiles dropped orange.
Likewise, I do not see a regular hit on yellow that would have altered the outcome. This attack did not exceed the creature's DR and would have been redirected and this attack hit even though I had misapplied the miss chance.

![]() |

Having a hard time following everything through due to being at work (whoops), but would the chance of confusion on orange from the crit perhaps prevent it from attacking anyone else? If that is too much retconning, just ignore me.

I considered that. Orange stayed put and made two ineffectual attacks that round, so it retconning a daze would make no difference in the current status of the fight.
But, I appreciate you bringing it up and pointing out errors that I may have made as it helps me better correct mistakes and (hopefully) avoid them better in the future!

Well, the smoke took down one of them already - I'll put that down as a victory to Gava.

This one is totally on you. The smoke was a brilliant idea. We would have needed one of the retreat plans without it.
Well, we've got to give Lexicor props too. The magic missiles and dragon breath were key. Big damage dealers.
Stop it! We haven't won yet! You're going to jinx us!

![]() |

Infamy! That is so cool. I had no idea that mechanic existed in this game. How awesome. I play another character on Roll 20 and I like to complain to Venture Captains that I never get any sort of Performance Evaluations.. Good Times!

![]() |

Welcome to the club - I got one infamy in another character, just because I killed a group of dwarves (on live TV). In my defense, they didn't speak common!

Hey, my smoke (idea) dropped another gremlin. MVP!

For its part, the Tower of the Inspired is not oversold. Imagine the greatest library of Antiquity, overflowing with scrolls amongst marble columns and tapestries fifty feet tall; such was the awe inspired by this library, although the setting was infinitely more wondrous. But then, how many civilizations had to be exterminated to make this repository the unique collection it represented?
Alexandria perhaps?

![]() |

Alexandria perhaps?
I've been playing Assassin's Creed: Origins. It's an impressively beautiful rendering.

GM Valen |

Wishing you all a wonderful holiday season!
My posting will likely be limited between now and the end of the year, but I will be checking in and posting when I can.

![]() |

Seasons Greetings everyone. I am off to Mexico with my wife to visit family at a beach house for a week. Prices are great. All very last minute. Please BOT me till the 6th or so. I don't want to rely on my cell for this.
Thank you GM Valen. Thanks all.

GM Valen |

Lysle, before I forget -- I really like the way you name all the combats.
Glad you like it! It is an idea that I saw one of the better GMs using on these boards so I stole it whole cloth!
Thievery is the sincerest form of flattery (or something like that)

For anyone who may still be having sign-in issues, there are steps on how to clear the cookies and resolve the issues
here.

I wonder if Meme is still unable to sign in. Before I read your comment about clearing the cache I switched browsers and that worked too. Hopefully he'll see these comments.

![]() |

That was indeed the issue. Finally back on. Probably would have been nice of Paizo to put the needed resolutions steps on the main page. Oh well. I'll post shortly.

therealthom |

Since it looks like we're winding up, I'd like to thank you all for a terrific game, with very special thanks to GMV. I hope to see you all around the boards, and to have the opportunity to play with you again.
Oh! One last question: who will be the new First Seeker?

![]() |

GMV, for your convenience I've copied Burn's info here. I don't think anything has changed.
1) Player name: therealthom
2) Character name: Burnham Kenyon
3) SFS#-Character#: 90661-704
4) Character Class & Level: Soldier 2
5) Faction: Exo_guardians
6) Earn Income (go ahead and roll): Sadly Burn has no day job.
GMV, Before we start, Burn would like to buy a static electroshock pistol, spare battery, and industrial backpack, and a called weapon fusion seal which he'll place on his sword. He'll sell his old consumer backpack. I think that leaves him with 141.3 , but I might not have added in his last chronicle's pay. I will double check.
For this mission, he won't carry food or hygiene kit to get his encumbrance down.
GMV, Burn is slotting the exoguardian faction boon. Nothing else looks good for this mission. Before we leave he'll purchase 2 called fusions, 1 for his sword, one for his reaction cannon.

![]() |

This mission will see Rhuhbarb-e hitting level 2. I was told that prior to officially leveling a character to 2, essentially we have the ability to change whatever we want? Race/Class, Feats etc. Can anyone confirm this?
Thank you!
By the way, Sorry I had to step away for a vacation, but I had a great time. Thanks everyone.
