Hello everybody! This is the gameplay thread for PbP Gameday IX's Shimmerstone Gateway game. Fun activities here include:
* Dotting in
* Adding your details to the handouts
* Watching the opening crawl
* Introducing your character[/list]
I'll start the game on Sep 1st, but feel free to banter until that time!
Dawnfriend |
From the characters tab, it looks like we lack both Operative and Envoy at this point, so either would be a welcome addition.
Kaixik |
My character, Kaixik, is technically an envoy but doesn't actually have any conventional envoy abilities because of some character chocies and the Phrenic Adept archetype. So don't look and think "oh we have Envoy covered" because if you equate "envoy" with "Get 'Em" and/or "Inspiring Boost" then we don't have an envoy.
Angus Doldig |
Angus is a generic Asian/Tian with blond hair and shockingly blue eyes, average height, a bit slender. He will generally try to find a non-combat solution first, viewing violence as a last resort.
DM Kludde |
A group of starfinders has been summoned to the Lorespire complex
First Seeker Ehu Hadif stands behind his chair across the table. Two of his hands grip the backrest tightly as the other two fidget, indicating some anxiety or excitement before he begins to speak.
“Thank you for joining me. It’s a pleasure to be here before you. Today, I have a special request directly from a High Despot of the Veskarium.” Ehu Hadif pauses, gauging the reactions of his audience. He gestures to a projection that pops up of a heavily snow-capped planet.
“Of the Veskarium system’s planets, Vesk‑8 is the furthest from their sun, and most would not consider it a glamorous outpost. Each of the Veskarium’s planets has an ultimate authority, called the High Despot. Jularaz the Frozen is the High Despot of Vesk-8 and is our client for this particular mission. It can’t be overstated what a unique opportunity this presents. Considering he has an entire planet under their control, we would not normally expect a High Despot to need resources such as the Society. But Jularaz seems keen on protecting the secrecy of the anomaly uncovered in his shimmerstone mines, and he doesn’t trust his own ranks to keep the information from the attention of outside Veskarium leadership. [/b]
“The High Despot has requested our assistance in investigating this anomaly. When we questioned him for specifics, Jularaz remained vague. I anticipate that this is partially to keep the information secure, but it also evidences exactly how little Jularaz currently understands about the anomaly. All we currently know is that it likely has something to do with the shimmerstone mined on Vesk-8. Such an unknown quantity requires a versatile group to investigate and research the phenomenon.
“We now have the opportunity to develop a relationship with Veskarium leadership using both the skills and discretion of our Starfinders. Although Jularaz may come across as ambitious and status-oriented, he is deeply engaged in the politics of Vesk Prime, and certainly not a meaningless ally to obtain. “You will be meeting with the High Despot’s direct contact, Rahla.” The projection changes to the feline face of a pahtra. Black markings dot her beige fur, and a pink scar cuts diagonally over her amber eyes. “She is the High Despot’s eyes and ears in the mines, and she’ll lead you from the surface into the cavern where the anomaly has appeared. While you should always do your best as Starfinders, please be aware that you are all emissaries for the Society, and you will be responsible for establishing the nature of our relationship with the Veskarium.”
The game is afoot! Go ahead and introduce yourselves, ask questions and/or roll Culture, diplomacy or physical science checks
Kneepuncher |
"Back to the Veskarium?" a green-haired halfling man with one robotic arm leaning against the wall next to a shield grumbles. "Wish I had known about this before. Just got back from Vesk-3," he explains as he turns to his newest teammates. "Well, vesk or skitters, it's likely to be another interesting trip at least.
"Oh," he adds, almost as an afterthought, "they call me Kneepuncher. Should be obvious why the first time we get into a scrap, if it ain't already. Happy to stand in front and trade blows with the bad guys so you don't have to." He grins impishly and waits to hear what the others have to say.

Only physical science is the sweet one, so someone else will have to handle that.
Af'val |
Revvy Bitterleaf's character here. Sorry for not speaking up earlier..for some reason I didn't see that there were new post in the gameplay thread. We have a lvl 1, 2, 2 and 3 so far? I have a Technomacer who still needs to have his online stats updated to lvl 3 which I think will fit in with this group of an envoy, vanguard, operative and mystic
Kaixik |
A courtier shirren wearing a dark blue suit of regimental dress I armor 'speaks up', but can only be heard in the listener's mind.
"Oh, how exciting! Greetings, everyone. My name is Kaixik (ka-ICKS-ick), but you can call me "K" if that is easier for you to say. It is a pleasure to meet you all, and I look forward to cooperating on this task with all of you!"
Kaixik turns to address the First Speaker directly.
"First Speaker Ehu Hadif Ko’ra Amares of Clan Tolar, it is an honor to meet you. And, thank you for this opportuntiy to represent the Society on Vesk-8. You have certainly succeeded in assembling a diverse group here," he says, smiling while gesturing to the party.
"First Speaker, do you know what Jularaz the Frozen values? Of course we will provide assistance investigating this anomaly, but if we know the sort of things that he or his assistant, Rahla, are interested in, we might be better able to assist them and so earn their trust for the Society's beenfit."
Kaixik also takes a moment to reflect on what he knows about the Veskarium, and if he's ever heard of these individuals in particular.

Modern Body |
A young and very muscular half-elf is sitting back in his chair, relaxed. There’s a holographic sign atop him, with the words MODERN BODY written in glowing neon colors, alternating between purple, green and pink. Sometimes they are replaced by a moving sign that says “modernbodymodernbodymodernbody”, repeating itself a couple of times before going back to the original. He seems to be watching something on his comm unit, which he puts away for a moment. “Hello, companions. I am Modern Body. You might have seen some of my magical fitness holovids - they used to be very popular some 5 to 10 years back, in at least a third of the Pact Worlds. Nice to meet you.” he goes back to his comm. His armor is carefully tailored to reveal his impressive chest muscles.
No one has ever heard of him!
---------
Modern Body raises his eyes from his comm unit to listen to the new seeker. “Oh? An out of system mission? That sounds like a great opportunity to gage foreign markets. You can count on me, seeker - I’ll lead this bunch into glory, as usual. Though I hope you all finally paired me up with fewer anarchists this time.” Modern Body gets up and stretches, filling up a lot of room. “They didn’t give any more information at all on the anomaly? What a bunch of paranoids.”

The orange-furred skittermander wearing robes of a priest of Sarenrae looks excitedly at Kneepuncher. "Oh, you were on Vesk-3? I have family there. Did you meet Dauka? Or Nukonon? Or Bepo and Bipa - they're twins, you know. What about Quelk? Everybody on Vesk-3 knows Quelk."
He smiles at Modern Body. "Congratulations! Those videos sound like a lot of fun."
He looks around. "Hello everybody! I'm Dawnfriend, and it's a pleasure to meet you all. I'm a priest of Sarenrae, the most helpful of all the gods, may her light and warmth shine upon us. So if you need healing, let me know! I can't wait to help out our friends the Vesk. Never been to Vesk-8, before, but it's a good thing I have fur! If anybody needs to snuggle or anything for warmth, just let me know."

DM Kludde |
Ehu Responds to Modern Body's question: There is not much information on the anomaly. High Despot Jularaz’s complete consternation indicates it might be mystical in nature, as we also know that Vesk-8 isn’t particularly well-known for its technological innovations. We only know that it appeared on Vesk-8, and that the miners uncovered it in a shimmerstone mine after some extensive development of a new dig site. It must be exciting if it pulled Jularaz back from Vesk Prime.”
In response to Kaixik's question: “Jularaz the Frozen is mostly known for being the High Despot of Vesk-8, and for being there very little. He’s a bit of a social climber from what we know of him, and he collects information that benefits his own station as readily as slander that might hurt his opponents. He views his position on Vesk-8 to be an insult, as he greatly prefers the society of the system’s inner planets. I have no doubt that he hopes to use whatever he has found to leverage his position.”
Kaixik also recalls some knowledge on the local creatures of Vesk-8. Kothamas are large, peaceful, mammoth-like individuals. Their culture conflicts with the vesk occupants, as kothamas seek a more existentially enlightened path in life. They are the traditional users of shimmerstone, despite the Veskarium now regulating its trade.
Kothamas have shaggy fur and six stout limbs, and multiple pairs of glassy eyes turned toward the skies. Their culture is extremely peaceful, and they spend most of their time contemplating the cosmos.
The primary mining operation run by the vesk on Vesk-8 is called Penal Colony 8, and it’s a prison work camp that utilizes the labor of criminals committed for life. These sentences can be brutally short.
The kothamas of Vesk-7 and Vesk-8 convene a gathering called the Meet once every 36 years, using portals scattered across both planets to reach their shared moon, Traverse.
Modern body's knowledge of physical science also brings up a few nice little pieces of knowledge:
Vesk-7 and Vesk-8 pass each other on a 36‑year cycle, trading off their shared moon Traverse at this time. This event isn’t currently happening, and Traverse and Vesk-8 are currently at their furthest point in orbit.
Vesk-8 is a cold, mountainous, and volcanically active world, whose geology is strongly influenced by the gravity of its moon and sister planet. The gravitational impact on Traverse as it transfers between the worlds is even greater, triggering volcanic eruptions on the moon. The eruptions result in deep lava trenches on the moon’s surface. The moon is also frequently impacted by space debris, which kick up fogs of suspended particles.
The only liquid water on Vesk-8 comes from hot springs at the base of its mountains, such as Mount Matha, the tallest mountain in the Veskarium. Though Vesk-8 may be a harsh environment, its thin atmosphere is breathable to most breathing life forms. By contrast, Traverse has no natural atmosphere. A pulsing energy center at its core powers the technological structures that produce a breathable atmosphere at its tallest mountain, Gathermount.
DM Kludde |
Fortunately for the group, they count no large Izalguun or Morlamaw among them, since the shuttle flight to Vesk-8, economy class on a budget VeskSpace subsidiary, is not very spacious. Really makes you wonder how Vesk manages to tolerance such flights.
Fighting against the blustering winds of Vesk-8, the ship touches down just outside Penal Colony 8. A feline woman with sharp amber eyes (See handouts) stands proudly at the edge of the landing pad. Her white fur whips wildly in the frozen winds of the arctic planet. As the landing doors open, she beckons with clawed fingers toward the disembarking passengers. “Welcome to Vesk-8. I am Rahla. Please, follow me.” With a brisk turn on her heels, she leads the way down a long staircase and into the dank mineshaft. Prisoners, restrained at their ankles, loiter around the mouth of the cavern with wary eyes. “Don’t mind them,” she assures. “We must reach the portal quickly. Watch your step.” She hops nimbly over a crack in the path and points it out behind her, offering a hand to help anyone less sure of foot to cross.
Kneepuncher |
Kneepuncher is sure to grab one last flask of hot coffee before following Rahla into the mines.
His Liberty's Edge ancestors ponder things to use entropic strike on later...

"Hello, Rahla. I am Dawnfriend. It's a pleasure to meet you, and we're happy to be able to help you in any way we can." He also offers his six hands to help people over the crack, not particularly waiting to see if they request or need the help.
Modern Body |
“Hello, Rahla. I am Modern Body, the leader of this small expedition. Please lead the way. And if you don’t mind answering one question: the heck is a shimmerstone?” he says loudly over the wind. He doesn’t pay attention to the criminals, but takes a nice good look around the place as they walk further inside.
DM Kludde |
Nice to meet you too, Rahla says, and then turns to Modern Body “Of course. Shimmerstone is a mineral with mind-altering properties, and its what we mine here. Penal Colony 8 is as old as the Veskarium’s presence on Vesk-8. Due to our substantial workforce, we can have more than a dozen active workings in each sector, and we utilize novel backfilling processes to expedite the progress of new, secure tunnels. I engage in auxiliary operations on Jularaz’s behalf.”
The miners have uncovered a circular room 20 feet in diameter. Blue, softly luminescent jagged shimmerstone adorns every inch of the walls. Elaborate designs of smooth, carved shimmerstone inlay the floor, originating from the base of the shimmerstone archway at the center.
Rahla paces the edge of the room, eyeing the portal quizzically.
“This is one of many portals which are meant to transport the kothamas during the twice-yearly pilgrimage to their Meet— Vesk‑8 years, that is. They are only ever active for this event, despite our best attempts. However, this one has been activating consistently since its discovery, and we are more than a quarter of this planet’s very long years away from the Meet.
“You must investigate the nature of this anomaly. Enter the portal when it next opens, and report what’s on the other side. With the shared moon being so far away at this time, we must know where it leads.”
The nearby miners are resting along the outside of the room, forced to sit on the ground with their ankles bound. They whisper among themselves. (Diplomacy to interact)
Studying the shimmerstone may give some insight into the physical properties of the mineral. (Physical Science)
Alternatively, you can make a mysticism check
Kneepuncher |
Kneepuncher gives a glance at Angus at the mention of non-violent solutions. There's never a nonviolent solution, he thought.
Figuring he will only be a hindrance to the investigation of the portal, Kneepuncher tries to strike up a conversation with the miners.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
"There's no way the high muckety-muck here knows as much about what's going on as you folks," he whispers to a group fairly distant from Rahla. "What can you tell me about what's really going on here?"
Kaixik |
Kaixik bows slightly upon meeting Rahla.
"Thank you for the greeting, Miss. I'm looking forward to exploring the mines of Vesk-8!"
In the room near the portal, he asks "Rahla, how often does the portal activate? Do we have time to make preparations, or will it be opening soon?"
He also reaches out using limited telepathy to some of the prisoners. He includes the party but excludes Rahla. While most shirren have 30 feet of limited telepathy, Kaixik has honed his psychic abilities and can use limited telepathy at a range of 120 feet.
"Greetings, miners. Do you happen to know anything about this portal: what activates it, or where it might go? If you can help us we would be most appreciative."
Diplomacy+Skill Expertise: 1d20 + 16 + 1d6 ⇒ (8) + 16 + (6) = 30
After conversing with the miners privately, Kaixik will also investigate the Shimmerstone for its mystical properties. He's had a little bit of experience when it comes to magic.
Mysticism+Skill Expertise: 1d20 + 7 + 1d6 ⇒ (15) + 7 + (1) = 23
Modern Body |
“Riiight, that sounds like the dumbest plan I ever heard. Have you heard of Nightarch, back in Apostae, one of the pact worlds? We also have a mysterious portal there, and you know what happens to people that go across it? Neither do we! They never come back. Now, I’m assuming you already sent a drone or a couple of the ‘shackled volunteers’ you have around through it - what happened?”
Mysticism: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
Modern Body casts Detect Magic on the portal and holds the cone on it to see what he can read. Then he casts Detect Affliction on nearby prisoners to see if they were somehow affected by the mysterious object.
"Hey, Rahla - can I have a sample of the shimmerstone?" Modern Body asks, while investigating the place.
Angus Doldig |
"How interesting", Angus says.
He sneaks over to the miners and talks to them about the whole situation.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16 - maybe he'll get lucky?
Could Angus make a Life Science check to see if he knows anything about what kind of mind-altering properties shimmerstone has?
Dawnfriend |
Seeing that Kaixik seems to be doing well in talking to the miners, Dawnfriend turns his attention to helping Modern Body. He also casts detect magic, and begins consulting with the other spellcaster about what the impressions could mean.
Mysticism(Aid Another): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13
DM Kludde |
Kneepuncher, Kaixik and Angus talk to the miners, who seem to be a bit nervous to have Rahla in the room. The mention that the first person to pass through the portal only stuck his head through, and returned with sweat frozen to his brow and gasping for air. Nobody has dared go in ever since.
Kaixik notices a sudden swelling of emotion, and can only barely control bursting into enormous laughter. The shimmerstone must be causing that, which is quite atypical for this material.
DM Kludde |
Anyone want to try the physical science check?
Modern Body |
Physical Science: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
DM Kludde |
It is apprent to Modern Body that The shimmerstone in area of the mine is cloudier and darker than the shimmerstone elsewhere, although this doesn’t appear to be from any physical impurities in the stone, suggesting a mystical origin.
Go ahead, take a piece Rahla says as she spots Modern Body's interest, this mine is quite abundant.
As she says this, the portal springs to life. Quick, this is an opportunity to investigate, Rahla says.
Are you ready to go through?
Dawnfriend |
Dawnfriend smiles. "No problem!" he shouts, holding his staff in two hands as he runs into the portal.
DM Kludde |
Dawnfriend steps through the portal and emerges in a cavern of sorts. The faint glow of the portal provides some illumination, and several delicate shimmerstone inlays originating from each side of the portal stretch out like sun rays along the cavern ground, generating another source of faint illumination.
A faint trickle of dripping water echoes off the cavern walls...
On the other side, the remaining crew just sees Dawnfriend disappear through the portal.
Af'val |
After hearing that it's alright to take a piece of the interesting stone Af'val quickly grabs a piece of the shimmer stone before he follows the others through the portal while making sure his environmental protections are turned on - you can never be too careful when running into the unknown.
Modern Body |
“Are you still alive? Floating in space?” Modern Body asks via comm unit, while crouching down to collect a light bulk worth of shimmerstone. He turns on his environmental protections before taking any further action.
"How do you use the stone?" he asks Rahla.
Kneepuncher |
Kneepuncher gets ready to jump through if there's a threat, but for now is willing to let the others experiment.
Angus Doldig |
Angus grabs a piece of shimmerstone, looks at the open portal, says, "Onward, for fun and adventure!", and leaps through. He's ready to activate the environmental protections on his armor if needed.
Kneepuncher |
"Guess there's no point in hanging around here." Kneepuncher shrugs, turns on his armor's environmental protections, then heads through the portal.
DM Kludde |
Rahla answers to Modern Body It's a stone with mystical properties, allowing the Kothamas to contemplate the cosmos through meditation. She is clearly more interested in her sales pitch than actually revealing how the stone 'works', which gives Modern Body doubt that she actually knows.
One by one, the adventurers step through the shimmering portal, until at last Kneepuncher hesitatingly makes his way through.
---
Deeper in the cave, the adventurer's light sources reflect off small crystals on the cavern wall.
It's eerily quiet, until a rustling surprises the group. A pair of snail-like creatures burrows through the wall, and appears with mouths agape, as if expecting food. It seems the adventurers look rather tasty!
