Excitement buzzes in the air throughout the Hookclaw warren. Kobolds drop their work and peer out from the tunnels to watch as you pass. You have been chosen for a most important mission. Tunnelmaster Miknik is anticipating your arrival. As you enter the chamber, the tunnelmaster gives a cue to the nearby workers, who pry away wooden boards and chunks of stone from the narrow mouth of a tunnel. The workers who dug this passage sealed it up as soon as they saw what was on the other side. It has remained closed—waiting for you—until now.
From where you stand, you can see rich fabric on hangers, exquisite vases, and wooden crates with unknown prizes inside. Just a fraction of this wealth could enable the Hookclaws to live in more comfort than they have in generations. But Hookclaws are smart, and they know when things are too good to be true. That’s where you come in.
“Secure the chamber!” Tunnelmaster Miknik barks. Once you ensure the treasure trove is safe, the Hookclaws can claim its valuables. “Standard Hookclaw hazard pay! First pick of anything you find, up to what you can carry! Be careful!”
Feel free to introduce yourselves :-)

Quizrel the Rogue |

Quizrel's eyes go wide as she oggles the trove of treasure.
Me firtht! Pushing a kobold aside and darting in, she shouts in her usual lisp from the cleft lip she was born with that caused the other kobolds to bully her. She starts rummaging haphazardly through the crates looking for items to enhance her thieving skills.

![]() |

Are we introducing ourselves like we are all in the same tribe together, because we are all kobolds? Or is it like we all just meet, cause a tribe of all kobolds just happening to meet seems unlikely.
Alright now, I party of more of us, yes! If any of you worship Tiamat, I'm kicking your butt now. Tiamat is a goddess in the forgotten realms, a dragon, and yes kobolds worship her, anybody who has played the first hardcover book adventure of 5e knows what I'm talking about.

Quizrel the Rogue |

Lol! I kid you not, I put "Tiamat" under Diety on my physical character sheet! Seriously! But I only played 1st thru 3.5 editions.

Simeek |

A blue scaled kobold steps forward from the rear of the group. He is absent-mindedly polishing his 'breastplate' which looks suspiciously like a large and dented serving platter. He peeks through the hole and his eyes go wide.
"It's beautiful."
He pulls out his 'halberd' (a knife tied to a wooden pole) and turns to the others.
"Is it safe? Do...do we go in now?"

![]() |

@Kane: You *are* all kobolds from the same tribe - you have all known each other for years, apparently...
Heading down the passage...
The familiar smell of earth and musty neglect wafts across your nostrils as you scuttle through the dirt tunnel and into the chamber. From here, you can see past the curtains of rich fabric and giant wooden crates into the rest of the room. Stacks of books and other luxury items are haphazardly crammed onto massive wooden shelves, preserved from mold despite their clear abandonment. Immense piles of furniture, rich with intricate carvings and plush cushions, have been jammed up against the walls. Chests with glittering locks lie on the floor, coated with dust. A pile of casks, sacks, and barrels forms a looming barricade across the western end of the room, which blocks the rest of the chamber from view.
Suddenly, points of light, cherry-red glows in the dark, ignite, revealing the positions of a number of kobold-sized beetles, which appear to be very unhappy with your intrusion!

Simeek is jostled by the others as they head into the room, knocking him inside as well. Seeing the beetle and the cat fighting to his right and since the tunnel behind is crowded he panics and runs forward only to stop abruptly as he approaches another beetle.
"Eeeeeeeep! Getawaygetawaygetaway!"
He desperately stabs his halberd at the beetle.

Izni fires a bolt of frost at Red, sending ice crystals cascading across its carapace, which begins to crack.
Unfortunately, Precious is unable to capitalise upon this.
Simeek, in a blind panic, charges forward, and turns Green to paste.
Triple its maximum hit points!
Not to be outdone, Kane then finishes off Red with a blast of acid.
Quizrel tries a crossbow bolt, but it goes wide.

Quizrel moves southward along the crates. Rounding the crates, she sees a beetle shecan get a good shot at (light blue). She loads a bolt and fires at the vermin.

piercing: 1d6 ⇒ 2
And almost shoots herself in the foot.

Simeek |

Simeek opens his eyes and sees that the beetle is dead. Cautiously he moves around the crates towards the cries of the wounded cat.
"Hey. Leave that poor cat alone!"
He grimaces and turns away, thrusting his halberd at the nearest beetle.

Rhin throws a paper-weight from the nearby desk, crushing Blue.
Izni then throws another frost-bolt, annihilating the final insect!
Combat over.
There is nothing of immediate value in this area, but the room *does* continue on the other side of that high-piled stack of crates over to the west... which you could climb, or just walk around ;-)

Quizrel the Rogue |

Her eyes wide in amazement, Quizrel speaks quietly to her companions as she takes in her surroundings.
What iz thith plathe? Anyone stheen anything like thith before?
Quizrel follows her companions but slinks stealthily along in the shadows.
(Avoid notice exploration mode.)

Since Izni is taking 10 minutes to refocus I think that we should search this room. 'Nothing of immediate value' is not the same as 'nothing of value'. This place is so cluttered we could walk right past a fortune and not know it..
Simeek gives the cat a pat on the head and begins to search the immediate area for anything interesting.
"What's in this crate? No wait, what's on this table? No wait, what's on this clothing rack. So much stuff. I can't decide what to look at first."

![]() |

Alright. Nothing of value to adventurers (i.e. the scenario does not give me any 'treasure' to hand out. That was *not* me trying to trick you into bypassing loot). The NPCs back in the tribe might be able to use the stuff in here as raw materials / strange artefacts from the surface, though...
The party moves around the beds...
This plain hallway is relatively clear of junk, allowing further passage into the back reaches of the 'tomb'. Two rooms lie to the west, their doors wedged open with swells of fungus and huge clusters of mushrooms.

Quizrel the Rogue |

I'm coming! Quizrel says as she moves into the area filled with fungus.
Which door? Which door? Where should we go? she says excitedly.
That door or that door? she points at the doors.
We must be careful for danger. Which way do we go?

![]() |

Alright, who is opening the door?
Being a sorcerer, I don't want to get to far ahead of you all and be the front line in combat if something really is around the corner.

Quizrel the Rogue |

I will open door or Simeek can open door, since he haz long pointy weapon. First, need to know if mushrooms are poisonous.

As the party moves forward to approach the fungus...
The fungus quivers, and a vaguely-humanoid, small-sized fungal amalgam is extruded from the fungus patch; it gestures angrily at the party, looking ready to attack!

Kane tosses an acid burst, coating the strange creature in sticky acid.
Simeek then charges in, and delivers a nasty hit, leaving it heavily injured!
Izni recognises this creature as a Fungus Leshy, a creature that, when it dies, causes an explosion of verdant energy, healing other fungal-creatures within a 30' radius.
The subsequent frost ray goes wide.
The Fungus Leshy tries to punch Simeek...

Rhin beans the fungus leshy with a thrown foot-stool, then Quizrel pops it like a boil with a well-aimed crossbow bolt.
There is an explosion of rot, causing the fungus in the area to swell and become more vibrant...
...but nothing else animates.
Combat over :-)
Searching this area does not turn up anything useful to adventurers... although some of the mushroom might be nutritious :-)
Peering through the two open doors...
Room to the West:
This icebox still contains the lingering chill from the magic that once kept the chamber cold, as well as a few slowly melting blocks of ice. It is clear at some point in the past the magic failed, however, leaving behind clusters of fungus and a rusted, holey casserole pan.
Feel free to roll Nature checks :-)
Room to the North:
This cluttered chamber contains a towering table covered in crafter’s tools and surrounded by bundled supplies.
A search of the room turns up some useful supplies:
A light hammer, a hatchet, five backpacks, four bedrolls, two fishing tackles, artisan’s tools, 100 feet of rope, and a repair kit.

Oooohhh.
Quizrel's eyes go wide in awe as she goes the the gear they found.
Look at all this adventuring gear! Rope, hammer, a hatchet, bedrolls, backpacks, tools. We can be professional adventurin' kobolds now! She says excitedly.
