Salvatore Vasili
Iomadae visiting us in our dreams well then that was surely a dream to remember. Not very often that you get to see someone like that even in your dreams. Salvatore will make sure he writes down every detail that he remembers of the dream.
I would be most honored to meet the Queen and would gladly meet her at any venue that would be appropriate and comfortable for the Queen.
Salvatore will begin to cast Prestidigitation to make sure that he is as clean as possible.
I wrote the breakdown in gold on the loot sheet at the top of anyone needs to refer back to it.
GM Roxtar
The page nods and smiles, offering a salute to the group before leaving.
Within just a couple hours the queen and her retinue arrive at the Heart. Very quickly a room is set aside for her to use, and another message is sent to the group, letting them know she has arrived and is ready to meet with them at their leisure.
Darius Coldwall
well ill be. We get to be visitin royalty. Dis gonna be fun! I bet she gonna have l da best food and drinks!
Darius eyes will shift to white and posture straighten at talk of the dream
It seems my heavenly leader Iomadae has approved of our actions. I can only be grateful that my lord has granted us this surge of power. To be kissed by my lord is not something to be taken lightly but to be relished.
Darius eyes will shift back and posture relax.
whew buddy that got Sarathiel all in a tizzy. Guess we some kind of heroes I reckon
Salvatore Vasili
Salvatore will make sure he is cleaned up, make sure his gold holy symbol or Nethys is shined up nice and then will head to meet the Queen with the rest of the group.
GM Roxtar
Arriving at the room, the group finds the queen and two guards having a quiet conversation. As you all enter and approach, she stands and moves to meet you, her eyes looking over each in turn.
"It is good to finally meet you all. I hear you were quite instrumental in the victory here. Second hand accounts tend to... embellish details. I would very much like to hear what happened in your own words. I hope you are not too bored of telling the tale already." She smiles, though it is a smile of one who has much on their mind and hints at a hidden sadness.
Darius Coldwall
hey there you highness. It be a pleasure to meet ya and we all be honored to meet you. I would be happy to tell you all about what happened so strap your self in cuz here we go!
Darius will tell the queen all of our tasks we have completed starting from when we fell into the crack in the ground and made friends with the mongrelman to the most recent heroic tale.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20
Salvatore Vasili
Salvatore will bow, It is an honor to meet you your highness. It would be our honor to tell you the story of what happened to us and not a problem in the slightest.
Salvatore will make sure he fills in any details Darius might gloss over. He will also make sure to let her know how tariahed the last location was and how we worked to get it back close to it's former glory.
WalMir
|
Meeting the Queen is a momentous occasion for Walmir, and he prepares accordingly. Putting on his best garments and making sure his holy symbol is clean. As they enter the room, he pays his respects as best he can, not being familiar with the ceremony of this land.
As Darius begins their tale, Walmir will do his best to help with the retelling
diplomacy to aid: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
GM Roxtar
The queen listens with rapt attention as each take turns relaying events. As the tales wind down to the conclusion, her smile seems much more warm and hopeful.
"That is quite the adventure you four have had." She takes in the room and lets out a small sigh. "Have you eaten yet? It is nearly lunch, and I have something to discuss with you all." She gestures to one of the guards and he heads out of the door.
After a short time, the guard returns, followed by a couple of the inn's workers carrying trays. They set the trays down and bring each person a plate of food. The same rations that everyone gets at the Heart. Even the queen gets a plate as she motions for all to sit and enjoy.
Once everyone has had a chance to sample the food, she begins to speak.
"While there are some narrow-minded souls among the crusade who blame you for the destruction of the wardstone border, I do not begrudge you for what you did. Far from it. From the sound of it, you saved entire legions of crusaders from a most vile fate by preventing Vorlesh from transforming them, and the blast of energy gave us the time we needed to regroup and prepare for what will certainly come next. But you understand the implications of what you’ve done, I’m sure. The wardstones are gone, but Iomedae has seen fit that you will be their replacement. I can think of no other reason that would explain why their power would have settled in your bodies and souls and didn’t merely fade into the ether. In time, the demons will regroup and reorganize—we can trust their inherent chaos to make this period of regrouping longer than it otherwise would take, but we shouldn’t underestimate them. They’ll be back soon enough. Already I’ve had reports from along the front lines that small groups of demons are attacking fortifications and settlements along the southern border."
"But what intrigues me most is news from several reliable sources that as our fiendish enemies are starting to mass in the southern reaches along the Riftshadow within the Worldwound, they have left several of their northern lairs relatively unprotected. In particular, the fiend Aponavicius has taken the bulk of her army from Drezen, leaving it only moderately protected as she joins with the Storm King in Iz to, no doubt, plot greater attacks on larger targets like Nerosyan, Karcau, and beyond. The time is right to strike into their territory. Drezen was the first of our cities to fall after the First Crusade, and we lost more than our kin and our pride that day. We lost the Sword of Valor, a magical banner carried by the Inheritor herself during the Shining Crusade. If Drezen could be retaken—if the Sword of Valor could once again be held by the crusade... well, I trust I don’t need to explain how well that would affect morale. But with the imminent attacks along the border, I cannot spare many to lead an assault on Drezen. And even if I could, a large army attacking the city would only draw Aponavicius back to defend the place. The obvious tactic is to send in a group of capable heroes with a modest but well-trained army to strike now, while the proverbial iron is hot. And this is why I’ve sought you out. If you can retake Drezen and reclaim the Sword of Valor, not only will you silence the fools who would brand you traitors for destroying the wardstone, but more importantly, you would bolster the entire war effort with your heroism. And I fear we need all the bolstering we can get!"
Salvatore Vasili
This is an opportunity that we can not waste. We absolutely must strike as soon as we can. Striking a blow to their forces as well as silencing people would be the best of both worlds.
Darius Coldwall
Darius posture will straighten and his eyes will shift to white
Your highness, your strategy is well thought out and will be effective in raising morale. Morale can be a powerful force on the battlefield and in a cities mind after it was dealt such a harsh blow. We would be honored to take the fortification back in the name of good and out of the hands of the wretched. You have my scythe!
Darius eyes will shift back and posture will relax as he continues eating as if he never stopped
GM Roxtar
"We're sending three specialists with you. Sosiel Vaenic was a cleric of Shelyn here in Kenabres before the temple was destroyed—he can help with healing as needed, but he’s also quite knowledgeable about demons and their tactics. Aron Kir is an expert on siege tactics, traps, infiltration, scouting, and the like; he’s where you’ll be getting your map of the Citadel, incidentally. And lastly, there’s Nurah Dendiwhar. She’ll be supporting you with her bardic magic, but she’s also an expert on the region and knows more about Drezen than anyone in Kenabres at this point, I’ll wager. I’m also going to be sending an army of crusaders with you. There’s only a hundred of them, but they’re all devout paladins of Iomedae. It’s not a large army, but you’ll be able to move without attracting attention. Trust me, that’s an advantage when it comes to demonic foes. They hit hard, so it’s best not to give them the opportunity.”
As the luncheon wraps up, "One final thing of note, as it seems you are all in agreement to take on the quest, there is a small bit of ceremony involved. In order to lead, or join the Crusades really, you will need to be knighted. Best to do so in sight of others, as witnesses. If you are ready, we can attend to this now in the main hall."
Darius Coldwall
oh boy I never reckoned I would be knighted. I'm ready when ya'll are
Darius will take a napkin from the table and give his nrw full plate a good shining
Salvatore Vasili
Yes I am ready, your highness. Salvatore will stand up and give a bow.
GM Roxtar
The queen stands and heads towards the main hall, beckoning the others to follow. Once she arrives, there are hushed whispers spreading through the room as more and more of the crusaders turn their attention towards her.
"With this recent invasion and attack on our lands, the call goes out once again to any able bodied person, to stand and fight. To drive back these demons and to free our homes from their vile influences. These four, have been blessed by the gods themselves, and have agreed to help drive back the darkness."
She pulls out her longsword, it's sharp edge evident. Standing before each of the four, she taps them with the flat of the blade and then gives a nod.
Those assembled give a raucous round of applause and offer to buy drinks for the group.
Queen Galfrey holds up her hands to get the attention of the room again. "It is also during these times that we need more leaders. Those that are willing to step up and take the reigns of command. It is my understanding that there was an individual here that started rallying the survivors and got them back into organized units. She took on the role and did an amazing job at it. I would like to officially recognize Irabeth Tirablade."
The half-orc had been standing off to the side with Anevia, hearing her name, she blushes and gives a small wave. The queen motions for her to join her, and she does.
"In appreciation for what you have done for the city of Kenabres, I would like to promote you to the rank of Captain."
Irabeth blushes even brighter, but gives a big smile. "Thank you my queen, I am honored."
More cheering sounds. After a short while, and several knights patting the group on the back, the Queen meets back up with them. "If you are ready, I can introduce you to the Knights of Kenabres, the unit you will be leading."
Salvatore Vasili
Thank you for this most gracious honor. Let's meet these knights.
GM Roxtar
In short order the queen and her crew are ready to depart.
"I will give introductions once we arrive, but in the meantime, I had forgotten to explain one other thing. Your new knighthood also comes with some perks. It may seem a bit... excessive at times, but accomplishing certain deeds will bring medals as rewards. I know some of you may balk at the recognition, but they aren't just fancy pieces of adornment. Each comes with special magicks attached to them."
she will explain about the Righteous Medals
Arriving at the war camp, a few of the scouts begin to call out as the group approaches. In short order all of the soldiers have formed up into well disciplined ranks and offer a salute to Queen Galfrey. She stands before them and announces you will be joining the task force, the Knights of Kenabres, as they head to Drezen. A great cheer goes up.
Shortly after, the troops are dismissed and return to their tasks at the camp. Meanwhile, the queen heads to her tent, and collects a small coffer. Inside are many small medals.
"Based off the reports, you have done some of the deeds necessary to earn these. It would be remiss to not present them to you now."
She then reaches into the box again and extracts another medal.
"Salvatore Vasilli and Cannetaken, to you I present a Righteous Medal of Clarity. Collecting and returning information on the enemy movements in the city and abroad will be invaluable in the coming war."
"Darius Coldwall, to you, the Righteous Medal of Vigor. Surviving a deadly attack by a demon only to return and finish the fight."
"Now that that is completed, let me introduce you to the other commanders."
The others are gathered in, Aron Kir, Sosiel Vaenic, and Nurah Dendiwhar. Each introduces themselves and offers other pleasantries.
"Well, you all have much work ahead of you to coordinate this assault, so I'll leave you to it. I wish you luck in your mission and hope to hear of your triumph soon."
With that, the queen excuses herself and returns to her retinue before heading off towards another encampment.
Salvatore Vasili
Salvatore takes off his Mask of Conflicting Energies that is a mask that is half black and half white. He will get to know the commanders better to try to find out their strengths and start to plan about the attack.
Darius Coldwall
Thank you for da honor your highness. If you would be so kind to excuse us we should get to know da men and women who we gonna be fightin wit. if you need anyting else just let Darius know and I'll take care of it for ya.
Darius will then give a bow and then will fasten the medal onto his armor and make his way through greeting the men and women. As he makes his way greeting the troops he will see walmir looking out of place and attempt to get him involved with him
Come on now wally! You got to get in der and talk with the troops. Who knows where a little chattin could get ya. Maybe me you and a couple others could let loose a little tension in out tents later
Darius will give a wink and a back slap to walmir and jump back into mingling.
Darius's posture will straighten and his eyes shift to white. Darius will them call for everyone's attention. Darius will activate his Halo and then call out to the troops.
Knights of Kenabres! We are honored to join your ranks today in defense against the evils of the world!
Soon we will strike back against these demons and take back what belongs to us! We shall take this Fort and smite the evil that inhabits the area! This will be a tough battle and there is a chance that some of us may not make it back but remember what we do this for. The people of Kenabres! Now raise your weapon in the air and howl out to the evil of this world and make them tremble with your might! For the people! For the queen! For Kenabres!
Cannetaken
Tak fastens his medal to his armor. He gives himself an appraising look in the nearest reflective surface. He stands a bit straighter and puff out his chest a bit more. Nodding to the reflection in satisfaction he strides out amongst the troops with purpose. Smiling and nodding along with Darius' words, his gaze passes over the assembled Knights (who-say-ni). Once Darius is finished he mingles and makes small talk, introducing himself more personally to small groups and letting them know he will do whatever he can to help them, and that all the need do is ask. After sufficiently making face time with most, if not all of the men, Tak leaves them to make preparations for departure.
GM Roxtar
After the rousing speech, the troops seem raring to go, though it is evening and the "mission" doesn't begin until morning.
The other leaders will meet up with you four and start to plan out a course of action.
Sosiel steps up and turns to WalMir, an air of calmness surrounding him. "Traveling with a priest is often taken as a good omen to the troops and raises morale. I also carry with me the blessings of Shelyn, which could be of use should we take injuries. My partner Aron has a good eye and a tactical mind about him. He will be good at helping to formulate a strategy going forward."
Nurah will shrug. "If the troops need a song, they can rely on me as well. I'll spur em into action good enough."
Sosiel clears his throat. "As for what roles you will be filling, what is it that you do? We have heard the rumors of the blessings bestowed upon you by the goddess herself, but what does that translate to on the battlefield? I know my question may seem harsh, but it is not intended as such, merely a curiosity. Also, who will be taking the reigns on this endeavor and leading us to victory?"
any of you can elect to take on the commander role, or if you would prefer you can select someone else from the three here or out of the npcs you have met so far (anevia, aravashnial, horgus, or irabeth)
GM Roxtar
just need someone to be officially nominated or recruited for the commander role and if you guys are taking any of the npcs with you.
Darius Coldwall
I'm more of a on da frontlines fightin kinda guy rather den watching from a hill. So I will be wit da soldiers and dis beauty here Tak will be leading da troops. He has quite de motivational abilities ain't I right talky.
Darius will give tak a slap on the ass and a wink
as for the NPCs I would say anyone who wants to. I would give them the option.
Salvatore Vasili
Yes, Tak you would be a great choice to lead our forces. Let's lead them to glory!
I would say to bring Aravashnial, Horgus I would say we can extend the offer but he cldoesnt take me for a battle guy. Anevia and Irabeth could take care of the forces that are not going.
Cannetaken
"Thank you all for the vote of confidence. I will endeavor to bring honor and glory to these find soldiers."
Tak is good with offering to everyone the chance to join.
GM Roxtar
alright, Tak is commander. got a lot of, "we could ask them" but nothing firm. if you want to offer to an npc, offer it to them :P
Salvatore Vasili
Salvatore will approach Aravashnial, I know that we both share a noble cause outside of this one. Would you be willing to join us on this venture?
Salvatore will approach Irabeth and Anevia, I know that you both are willing to fight, but I am sure I can speak for everyone and say that you have done a magnificent job in defending what we have and we are all very grateful. I do want to give you the respect of at least offering if you want to join us on this venture. If you do not and wish to stay back that is fine with us but if you want to join we will be glad to have you.
Salvatore will approach Horgus, Sir we might not have gotten off on the right foot but I am very grateful in all you have done for us and these wonderful troops. I want to extend an offer if you want to join us or not, the choice is of course yours but we would be glad to have you.
GM Roxtar
Aravashnial seems overjoyed at the prospect of traveling and assisting in the war effort.
Irabeth and Anevia decline the offer as presented. "There is much work to be done here. If it's a matter of joining the war just to join it, I would say we have our hands full here already."
Horgus grumbles and looks as irritated as usual, but he agrees to join as long as there are some troops to watch over his home.
Salvatore Vasili
Salvatore thanks Aravashnial and Horgus for joining.
He looks at Anevia and Irabeth, Someone with your leadership experience would be amazing to have in this fight but I totally understand your decision.
GM Roxtar
Base stats listed below
KNIGHTS OF KENABRES ACR 3
LG Medium army of humans (paladin 4)
hp 16
DV 18; OM +8 ranged
Tactics: expert flankers, standard, withdraw
Resources: improved armor, improved weapons (mwk cold
iron), mounts, ranged weapons (longbows)
Special: aura of courage, channel positive energy, divine health,
lay on hands, mercy, smite evil, spellcasting
Speed 3; Morale +1; Consumption 5
Adding Aravashnial and Horgus to the line up will give some bonuses. Aravashnial will give a bonus to the DV of +4 vs enemy spellcasters. Horgus on the other hand is not much of a fighter, but is good at handling money and goods. With Horgus's aid, your Consumption is reduced by 2.
since the choosing is done, Irabeth and Anevia will only go if they can both go. putting Irabeth in charge gives the Bloodied but Unbroken boon, which gives bonuses if your army is reduced to half health or less (essentially a kind of orc ferocity). Anevia gives just a flat out bonus of +2 to OM and DV :)
GM Roxtar
Setting out early the next day the army marches to the north. The road is long, and after a day of marching, the army has covered about 36 miles.
The army breaks to make camp for the night.
Day two dawns. Marching onward, just after noon the army comes across Vala's Gift. Approaching closer, it is obvious that the small town was recently razed and left in smoking ruins.
choice time. you can press on towards the next destination, or spend the rest of the day searching the ruins.
Cannetaken
Tak addresses the troops. "Company! We should search for survivors and offer whatever aid we can before pressing on! Break into four person search teams. Leave behind guards to cover our supplies."
Not sure if that has any bearing on actual gameplay bit it felt like a good RP moment.
GM Roxtar
Spending the rest of the day searching the ruins, the knights find no survivors, but they do manage to locate some food stores.
Units: 2d4 ⇒ (1, 4) = 5
per the general rules for the army, the Consumption stat is how much the army goes through in supplies for a week. prior to leaving Kenabres, the knights were outfit with food to max capacity (40 units). This stuff here, will be picked up by Horgus's team for you all to use :)
Day three is calm and slightly warm travelling through fields, but the knights make steady progress.
On Day four however, the scouts report that an enemy force lies ahead across a ford.
alrighty, first army battle is about to begin. will need you guys to decide on the tactic you wish to use.
the knights currently have;
expert flankers (+2 OM/-2 DV)
standard (no stat change)
withdraw (retreat, -2 OM/DV)
GM Roxtar
Phase 1, Round 1
Knights - Standard +0/+0
Tiefling - Standard +0/+0
Phase 2, ranged
Knights ranged: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
Phase 3, melee
Tieflings melee: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
The knights launch a volley of arrows at the assembled tiefling army, but fail to do any real damage. Conversely, the tieflings close into melee range and have similar difficulties against the heavily armored warriors.
on to round 2. same tactics or do you wish to change? there IS a morale check to change once the orders have been given. if you fail the check there are no negative consequences, they just continue to use their last tactic and ignore the new orders for that round.
GM Roxtar
Phase 1, Round 2
Knights - Standard +0/+0
Tiefling - Standard +0/+0
Phase 2, ranged
n/a
Phase 3, melee
Knights melee: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
Tieflings melee: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
The armies converge and begin fighting in closer quarters. While the tieflings struggle to deal any real damage, the knights beging to whittle down the enemy force.
same?
GM Roxtar
Phase 1, Round 2\3
Knights - Standard +0/+0
Tiefling - Standard +0/+0
Phase 2, ranged
n/a
Phase 3, melee
Knights melee: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
Tieflings melee: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
finally some decent rolls
The clash rages on for hours, both sides trading blows. Part way through the battle there is a flash of light and the enemy commander disappears from the field. After raging for several more hours, finally the tieflings are defeated.
Following the battle, as the others are tending wounds, Aron returns to the command area.
"With the fighting over, I would recommend scavenging the enemy forces. I know some of the knights might grumble about it though... but it seems a waste to let their supplies, arms, and armor go to waste if it can be repurposed for our side."
Convincing the paladins to scavenge will be as simple as ordering them to do so, but, as it is something they do not like, it will effect their morale. A successful diplomacy check while issuing these orders can maintain their morale.
The scouts return and bring news that there are no further threats in the immediate area, but they did find some human survivors of the demon raid. A nearby stone building had been used as a sort of prison for the humans. Kamilo Dann, a human female, is the leader of these captured people.
Currently, they are weak and injured. Kamilo offers to return to Kenabres to bring news of your successes so far or you could request that they join your forces. would need a diplomacy check to have the injured join up if you would rather they stay (mechanically they would be used to heal your army, but as you suffered no losses, just injuries, it is not necessary.
After their wounds have been tended to, one of the injured fighters, with bandages covering his hands and arms, approaches the group. "They told me about the things you did in Kenabres. I only wish I could have been there when the demons arrived, I could have shown them whatfor!" As he talks, he makes throwing motions and gestures with his hands as best as he can. "It sounds like most of the fighting has moved on from there, maybe I can help you out once these heal up." And at that he'll hold up his hands to make his point plain. "I don't do magic, but it's close enough. What'd'ya say?"
