The Waking Rune

You are summonsed to the Magnimar Lodge, Heidmarch Manor, to meet with Venture Captain Sheila Heidmarch concerning the cult of Lissala...

The Waking Rune

And so it is that you find yourselves in one of several libraries with Heidmarch Manor, meeting with Venture Captains Sheila Heidmarch and Ollysta Zadrian.

Sheila Heidmarch’s brief is short and to the point. “Thousands of years ago, a group of insanely powerful wizard kings ruled Thassilon, a vast world-spanning empire. Many of the great monuments in Varisia, including the Irespan here in Magnimar and the Storval Stairs, are relics of this forgotten age. The wizard kings wielded powerful rune magic and declared themselves rune lords. The Thassilonian empire was destroyed by some immense cataclysmic event, but the runelords were prepared and entombed themselves in hidden, well protected chambers and put themselves into deep, magical sleep.

Until recently, we thought the secret of the location of these chambers and methods of waking the runelords of Thassilon was forgotten. However, your work and other recent findings have revealed that a powerful group of Lissalan cultists knows where Runelord Krune is sleeping and are working to waken him from his long sleep. Awakening a powerful and ambitious wizard like Krune would have a massive impact on Golarion the Decemvirate would prefer to avoid.”

Sheila nods to the armoured woman next to her. “Ollysta has been actively pursuing the activities of the cult. She just got a lead about a powerful branch of Lissalan cultists operating in Kaer Maga. We need you to track down the cultists and find out what they are planning and disrupt their operation in Kaer Maga.”

"If you've any questions, Ollysta is better placed than I to provide answers." Heidmarch concludes.

You may already know something of Lissala and her cult...if you have a chronicle sheet for Cultist's Kiss on this PC you may open the spoiler below - but opening the nested spoilers requires succeeding on the higher DCs.

Knowledge (history or religion) DC15:
Lissala is the corrupt goddess of runes and knowledge, and her holy symbol is the Sihedron rune.

DC20

Spoiler:
Lissala’s high priest was Krune, the Runelord of Sloth. In spite of the fact that she has vanished and her high priest is sleeping, a cult survives dedicated to returning her influence to Golarion.

DC25

Spoiler:
During holidays in Thassilonian times, the followers of Lissala practiced a ritual called the Feast of Sigils, which emphasized indulgence and excess.

DC30

Spoiler:
The ancient Lissalan Feast of Sigils was a ritual of power in which participants would sacrifice a small part of themselves and in return gain great power.

A dude in a dark cloak steps out of the shadows of a bookcase, pulls back the hood revealing a face with sharp Elven features and long flowing black hair. He bows, saying simply, "Daedîn, at your service..."

Upon the brief's end, he hisses in disgust. "I know of the cult of Lissala; I've dealt with them before. She is the corrupt goddess of runes and knowledge, and her holy symbol is the Sihedron rune, damn her eyes..."

"Krune? From the extra bit of research I've done since our last mission, I believe Krune was Lissala's high priest...and is otherwise known as the Runelord of Sloth." Seldanna speaks up. "In spite of the fact that Lissala has vanished and her high priest is sleeping, it is clear that a cult still survives which is dedicated to returning her influence to Golarion."

A frown crinkles her brow as she shares further information. "I also learnt that during holidays in Thassilonian times, the followers of Lissala practiced a ritual called the Feast of Sigils, which empasized indulgence and excess...perhaps they are planning something of that sort in Kaer Maga?"

"Huh. I knew about the whole Krune-being-Lissala's-high-priest bit but not that stuff about the Feast of Sigils," remarks a young lady-gnome with strawberry-blonde hair. "Sounds pretty gross and blasphemous!"

The gnome is dressed in a sparkling chain shirt and carries a lance of adamantine slung across her back, along with her pack and an assortment of other weapons. She also wears a small wooden holy symbol around her neck, depicting a colorful bird. Sitting beside her is a rather large...fire cat? Except that it sports leathery black wings and has only a small stub for a tail.

"So...what sort of information do we have about this cult? Anyone in Kaer Maga seen anything super specific that'd give us a good lead to start with?"

The Waking Rune

Ollysta answers your questions.

“We have a friend in Kaer Maga. Several weeks ago she sent me a letter asking for help with a criminal element in the City of Strangers. These are the Lissalans. Our friend realised that they were tampering with foul magic, and that we were her best chance to find help. You’ll meet her at or near the Blushing Rose brothel. Ask for Miss Feathers. We’re not sure how embroiled in this she is, so make sure she’s doing well. She can be a valuable contact in the city.

Miss Feathers should be able to answer your more specific questions about the cult's activities."

Ollysta Zadrian looks at the talking cat-thing, Incandescence. She pauses for a moment, then replies to the eidolon. "Whilst I urge extreme caution in even jovial veneration of the Gods Below, I think that you are right about Kaer Maga. The City of Strangers is a good place to be if you want to be ignored. It is lawless and chaotic. Be on your guard."

"Transport has been arranged." VC Heidmarch adds. "You're travelling via Wind Walk. The weather is fine so as long as you don't get lost you'll be within the vicinity of Kaer Maga and the Storval Plateau in around ten hours. So that will be a little before the spell expires. If you've any last minute supplies to requisition, do so now. You leave at dawn."

Any more questions or purchases? I'll move us on in 24 hours or so.

When the my cousin, Guaril, isn't asking for my help, I run several businesses from Varisia myself. I know exactly where Whistledown is, in fact! He turns back to Heidmarch. "Wind Walk, eh?" He smooths his mustache. "Terrible on the hair, but a handy way to travel. Miss Feathers can tell us about this foul magic? We should be able to handle that. Did she say anything about vampires? The last cult was run by a vampire."

Daedîn arches an eyebrow and then a wry grin. "A brothel? Looks like this mission is off to a rousing start...shall we proceed?"

The Waking Rune

"Not just 'a brothel', Daedîn, but the foremost such establishment in Kaer Maga. The Blushing Rose is famous across Varisia" Sheila Heidmarch smiles whilst Ollysta Zadrian's mouth forms an equal and opposite frown.

"No word of vampires, Trade Prince" replies Ollysta to Teric. "But we don't know precisely what connections, if any, the Lissalans in Kaer Maga might have to the cell you encountered."

"Get some rest, agents. Be back here half an hour before dawn."

And so, the next morning, you assemble with all your gear and your various companion creatures in a courtyard at Heidmarch Manor. Ollysta Zadrian is present, with two Abadarian clerics in rich formal regalia.

Ollysta gives you a rough map of Kaer Maga showing the location of the Blushing Rose. "It's in the Hospice district. You'll find it easily enough." Map of the city on Slide 2

"For those of you who have never Wind Walked before, you have two speeds: very slow, and very fast. You will need to travel fast to reach Kaer Maga before the spell expires, but there is sufficient slack that you can stop to take on rations and water." One of the Abadarans goes into some detail of the workings of the spell before he and his colleague apply the magic to the whole group (though they do not accompany you.)

True to Heidmarch and the Abadarians' expectations, the Wind Walk spell carries you almost all the way to the City of Strangers by nightfall. The last hour you travel on foot.

The stone ring of Kaer Maga stands at the edge of the great rocky shelf known as the Storval Rise. Towering 3,000 feet high in places and never dipping below a thousand, Storval Rise is carved with the faces and forms of a myriad vanished kings and gods.

From a distance, Kaer Maga appears to be an enormous outcropping of gleaming, white stone extending straight up from the cliff’s edge, its 80-foot-high walls forming a seamless, six-sided ring and its squared-off skyline broken only by a cluster of towers and minarets at the south end. As you draw closer, however, you see that the great walls are revealed to be riddled with holes at every level, doors and windows carved by its residents. From these random entrances hang knotted ropes and ladders, cargo nets and winch-operated dumbwaiters, which residents use to come and go without a second thought — even children swing stories above the ground and scamper carelessly across makeshift landings. While several gated entrances at ground level are big enough for carts to pass through unhindered, most newcomers enter through the Warren, a vast break in the walls where some unknown force shattered the stone in ages past. Here a highrise of wooden scaffolding and temporary structures towers almost as tall as the walls themselves, and Kaer Maga’s poorest citizens live arboreally on planks and nets in a shantytown of vast proportions.

As you pass through the Warren you realise the the true strangeness of the city’s construction, for rather than being bordered externally by stout defensive walls, most of Kaer Maga lies literally inside its walls. Hundreds of feet thick, these vast stone bulwarks are mostly hollow, riddled through with chambers large and small and housing most of the city’s population in the twilight beneath their roof. In places the chambers are large enough that structures rise up the sides or stand free like those of a conventional city, while in others its interior is split into distinct floors, with entire neighbourhoods stacked one on top of each other.

You reach 'the Gap', a wide break through the shantytown's seven story scaffold sufficient to allow a half a dozen merchant carts and wagons through at once. The thoroughfare is busy, not only as a result of the incoming and outgoing merchant traffic, but also because it is choked with hawkers and barkers, and urchins offering various services.

"Geezers, look 'ere, Savo the Sage is 'ere to tell you your futures!" says a one-eyed youth who is either part cyclops or a very deformed human.

"Where's ye goin' guvnors?" asks a ragged girl. "Ye ain't exactly new to Kaer Maga, cus no-one is. But ye'll get yerselves lost without a guide, an' I'm the best, that I am guvnors. One gold coin is all I ask, an' I'll get ye anywhere 'cept the Shrine of the Seal or my name ain't Ally Gaira!"

You have arrived at the City of Strangers. Night has fallen. What do you do now?

"Woooooooow. This place almost looks like it could've been built by gnomes," Nina whistles as the group finally reaches the Gap and she's got a moment to really look around. "Just imagine the engineering know-how it must've took to build some of these buildings and neighborhoods without everything just crashing down!"

She pauses for a moment.

"That and maybe some trial-and-error. Most gnomish engineering involves a hefty dose of trial-and-error, you know. It wouldn't really be true gnomish engineering, otherwise."

When the ragged girl approaches the group, Nina smiles at her and then glances back at the group. "You know, the city is pretty big. It probably wouldn't hurt to hire a guide - especially now that it's dark."

The Waking Rune

"It's a deal, little lady knight! Next stop, The Blushing Rose!" Urchin Ally puffs out her chest and puts her hands on her hips. "Ye follow Ally Gaira, now, and be sure to keep up! Safe, quick and unseen, guv. We're going Ringward then. I hope Moose there is sure-footed!"

Urchin Ally darts off to the north, clambering up through the scaffolds. Every so often she looks over her shoulders to make sure that you're keeping up. "It'll take a little longer cus of Moose" she says, as she looks for routes avoiding rope climbing or steep stairways.

Ally leads you into the Ring - the walls of Kaer Maga. What greets you is quite astonishing. You have entered a bewildering maze of colour. Buildings crowd in on both sides, and also above and below you where multiple layers of streets exist, one on top of the other, joined by ramps, ropes, stairs and slopes. And the noise! The whole place is a riot of song and laughter. Most unusually of all, given that the darkness is only broken up by lanterns and torchlight, is the birdsong: a sweet cacophony that surrounds you.

"Oriat" says Ally. "Artists' district. But if ye see anyone looks like a monk, don't make eye contact! And no matter how ye might be tempted by sights or sounds, don't go Below!"

After a couple of hours scampering after your guide, you emerge into the open air again. Starlight shines down into the crater that forms the core of Kaer Maga. The buildings here are old, their age speaking of decadence. From alleyways and windows harlots of every stripe call to you, offering pleasures of the flesh.

"Hospice. Nearly there now. Ye can get anythin' yer want in Hospice district, guv. Only be sure yer want it."

You pass an inn with a hugely corpulent half orc minding the door. The sign above reads "The Sorry Excuse". "Ye stayin' here when ye're done at the 'Rose?" asks Ally. "Canary House is better, if ye've got the coin."

Less than ten minutes later you come upon a four storey building bedecked in fresh roses. No guard stands outside, but a steady stream of men and women come and go. "The Blushing Rose, guv. And ye've most of the night still ahead of ye. I'll not go in, don't wanna be taken for a strumpet. No offence t' the working ladies. If ye order food, remember our deal: I eat whatever ye eat, so send mine out here."

For her part Nina enjoys the trip through the Ring and it's a wonder she doesn't fall off at any point during the journey, what with all the head-craning she does to look at this and that. When Ally pauses to warn them about the monks and going Below, Nina glances at her fellow gnome and then nods.

"Yeah, what's Below? And why do we need to avoid those monks?"

Later, once they finally reach their destination, Nina looks around and then back to their little guide with some concern. "Are you sure you'll be okay out here by yourself?"

The Waking Rune

En route, Gnome talk....

"Kaer Maga's as old as Time they say, mebbe older. Built on top of stuff on top of stuff on top of more stuff. The deeper 'n' darker yer go, the weirder 'n' more dangerous it gets.

I told yer I'd take yer anywhere but the Shrine of the Seal. Well that's right here in Oriat, just a couple of levels beneath us. Them monks? The Brothers of the Seal. They's been fighting some kinda civil war amongst 'emselves since m' Pa were my age, only they don't care who else gets caught up in it."

Fendel is sure that you weren't followed. Nobody seems to pay you any mind at all, in fact.

At the Rose....

"Weeks?!" Ally replies to Teric incredulously. "Ye ain't seen Meatgate prices guv! As fer what I'd like: rat-on-a-stick! If they ain't got that, I'll have storval horse-steak, cooked rare, with a truffle sauce and fondant potato. Alright, guv?

Hey, I'll be fine, I'm as big as you two" Ally looks at the two gnomish knights. "But if yer like, yer can leave Bat-Cat here to play with me!" She grins, and reaches out tentatively to pet the eidolon. "I'll take ye to the Canary House when yer done here."

Inside...

Inside the Blushing Rose is bustling. Painted harlots negotiate with customers in corridors before leading them off into myriad side rooms. Common rooms allow guests to relax with drinks and food whilst they select from the establishment's other 'menu'.

Both Daedîn and Fendel note that there are no apparent security personnel. But there's no shortage of eager, burly men amongst the guests.

As you enter, a half-elven courtesan wearing an elaborate mempo and very little else greets you. "Good evening, sweethearts. Please leave your animals in the stable out back. If you're looking for Miss Aggie you can find her there. If not, what can Miss Oni tempt you with tonight?"

Though not always the wisest or most perceptive of individuals, Nina considers Miss Oni's disappointment for a moment and then fishes into her pocket. Assuming that Fendel and Daedîn manage to hold Miss Oni's attention for just a bit longer, she clears her throat.

"Um, I know time is money for folks in your line of um, work. So...a gold, in exchange for taking your time to talk to us and answer my friend's question?"
