A shipment of relics on its way to Minkai vanished somewhere in the Forest of Spirits, a dense woodland home to kami and spirits of all sorts. In search of the missing shipment, Pathfinder agents travel to a remote village, where they uncover secrets of this enigmatic forest.

Lucian wracks his brain, just keen enough to conjure a memory blocked by the smooth haze of a sake hangover (assuming of course he snuck a vial from Ling's shop drawer awhile back!) and coming up empty flicks his wrist to shock the gremlin - fragging it's daddytoe to charcoaled dust, with a scream of promised vengeance "It'll be your EYE that I'll take in return, TEEHEE" it squaks.

At Raini's command, Sasha swallows "Hungry" in a single gulp, licking her teeth. Meanwhile, Arlen executes his counterattack, outfoxing the fey at his own trickery game, and connecting with a flurry of blows while Raini, intending to support Arlen by aiming another frosty ray around the building and between his legs, strikes true!

9 piercing to Hungry, killing it.
6 bludgeoning then 11 cold (through both Cover and Lesser Cover!) to Sneaky, hurting it greatly.
Sasha's first attack felled the creature, so it still has a single action to obey Raini's command - which technically occurs before Keemul's turn, if it comes up.

Sneaky points to Arlen's feet and says "You're boot is untied!" but Arlen is too hardened for the ruse, even as the Gremlin's first sword strike connects despite the monk's guard being still up. Arlen easily dodges the second strike.

Raini, even as I have posted the AC and HP of the gremlins Sasha attacked (in Slides) - meaning you could have seen for yourself that Sasha easily destroyed "Hungry" on her first hit - it never hurts to post a "back-up" plan in a play-by-post game. I'd ask you to do one or the other moving forward, facilitating a smoother combat.

Lucian sends an electric bolt Snarky's way, causing the gremlin to spasm, when Raini comes down with another cold blast, freezing snarky solid in midair while he was dodging Arlen's attacks. His body crashes onto the ground and cracks into several pieces...

Lucien calls out, "Roit, let's troi ta save junior an' granny," and he again lapses into a guttural growling incantation as his eyes roll back in his head. Swirling white and silvery lights flicker about him, and then as he flicks his right hand forward and across his upturned left palm, a crackling burst of electric energy lashes out and hits the blade-wielding gremlin who was about to slice up grandma.

I'm fine; I'm not used to getting more than one hero point per entire game to be honest.

Arlen races after the child being taken. Forbidden or no, Arlen isn't going to let these creatures take whatever they want from the village.

Keemul's oft-repressed inner voice hopes the villagers still don't understand him. "I can either care about your stupid rules or your lives! Obvious choice, I hope," he yells, his zeal for battle still around as he throws himself forward.

In that case, I'd nominate a point to either Lucian, me, or Arlen, in descending order of priority. Going against the law in the interest of saving people seems appropriate for all three.

Raini helps the others round up the marauding fey, blasting with eldritch magic at every available opportunity.

As they make their way through the village, Raini seeks out the hosts and the chief.

I agree those on the front lines deserve a hero point as well. Agree with Keemul's assessment.

I feel like any and all of us could make a solid case for any other member of the party deserving the hero point. If you want to just assign each of us a number and roll it randomly, I'd argue whatever you roll would be a right choice.

The Border Village (Part Five)

Lucian arcs two more gremlins, freeing the child and his grandma in a single jolt. Donavin dashes across into the "forbidden" circle and slays two more, saving the life of a hunter whose weapon was dropped and was lying vulnerable upon the ground. Another gremlin makes a dash for the young boy, but Arlen somersaults in and grabs him, and while the gremlin looks on to see his quarry denied, Keemul comes down with another massive hammer smash. Raini rains down further eldritch blasts, scaring away a critical mass, until they all suddenly give up their marauding, and flee back into the forest...

Grandma gets up - using her husband's body to hoist herself (and knocking him back down) - and taking stock of the situation, crosses over to touch the faces of Lucian, Keemul, and Arlen, expressing her gratitude with, if not a smile, but a nodding of the head. She then turns to nod at the Leader, as he gets up, reclaims his spear what had fallen, and indicates to two other hunters to tend to the wounds of Arlen, Sasha, and Donavin (all with minor cuts). These healers rub a stinging ointment into the wound sites of Arlen and Donavin easily, but moving over towards Sasha, hesitate to approach before first looking at Raini with twin expressions of wariness...

...Later the evening, the PCs are invited to sit around the fire, as the villagers recount the day's events, chattering amongst themselves loudly, and acting out the battle from earlier - the young boy playing the part of Arlen: Punching and kicking with speed and fury, and falling down more than once from the effort - all to great laughter and merriment! The village maiden gives a coy look towards the handsome Lucian, her confident smile revealing no less than several teeth missing! A few of the hunters compare their own weapons to Keemul's - holding them side by side with marvel, before walking over to Keemul himself and measuring their own relative heights in total disbelief!...

...Grandma annunciates to Donavin while holding her hands to her chest first "AYA-ICHI" then opening her hands towards the rest of the villigers. "跟我說: Ayaichi" She waits for his response...

A blessing will remain with the PCs for the duration of the Scenario: All PCs gain a +1 untyped bonus to attacks vs. Foes benefitting from Cover.

Sidenote: I actually consider Hero Points Distributed Evenly at about the Rate of One per Hour of Play to be equivalent to a Right as concerns navigating the system math. As your GM, you can expect to receive a 2nd one before the end of the Scenario (the equivalent of about 4+ hours of play).

Donavin will put his hands to his chest and then open them out towards the village, mimicking the old woman and repeat "Ayaichi" after her. He will then put his fist thump his chest with it twice and say the word "Donavin", hoping that they understood what he meant and trying to pass on the impression that he was friend.

"Thank you all for your hospitality" Donavin will say to the villagers before they went, holding his hands to his heart. "It has been a pleasure, despite not being able to talk to you properly." Donavin smiled widely at them. He loved meeting new people! If given half a chance, he would spend hours talking about this and that with anyone who would give him the time.

"We should go where they suggested. I think they like us, after the whole saving them from attack thing." Donavin suggested.

"Or they could blame us for the attack and want to send us where we can't hurt anyone else, but I prefer to think they like us." the Half-Elf argued with himself.

"I'm happy to take a potion or two. I can shift my healers kit to my bag for now and keep them in my bandolier. Add a little firepower to my arsenal."

Keemul repeats Donavin's good idea when he's gone grinning at the gawking townsfolk. "Keemul. And don't you forget it! I'll be on my way back to sign autographs right after my crash course in Tien," he adds, blissfully unaware or uncaring that his audience can't understand.

The gnome goes back to riding along in the wagon, eyes mostly peeled for trouble. He has refused custody the alchemist's fire. "Only way I can make use of that is if I bat it. And that barely breaks even, style and effect over cost of repairs to the ol' piece."

"Best way is their way, I believe," he says, all for following the villagers' directions. "Doubt it's a trap, Don, but if it is, we got it. If they were in cahoots with those little guys, well, we've shown they aren't an issue. But let's just hope that isn't the case. It'd be quite the trick."

Arlen points to himself, "Ar-len. Arlen." he says before focuses on the party. "They live here, know the area. I agree with Keemul, its unlikely to be a trap. It's possible there is a misunderstanding, but its probably a better bet the relying on outdated information."

Raini holds his hands up to the villagers as he radiates magic into Sasha's fur, healing the minor wound. He nods his head to those offering healing, indicating all is well and the poultice won't be needed.

Heal Animal focus speall. Take 10 minutes rest to get the focus point back.

Raini agrees with the others that the new directions are the best course of action. "I suggest the same order and drivers as we arrived?" offers the druid as he hops up on the wagon.

Lucian manages to make his way towards the village maiden and tries to carry out his initial plan: learning some minor phrases in Tian. He tries to communicate with her to learn the words for "hello," "friends," and "rest," figuring these were exactly the sort of things that would have ben helpful to know when he first got here.

In case it will matter, I'm rolling an intelligence check to see if he can communicate and learn the words correctly. Intelligence: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

It's obviously a rather time-intensive process learning all these words as it takes a good while before Lucian appears, somewhat disheveled-looking, from his linguistics lesson with the young maiden.

After a night's rest, Lucian quite happily resumes his place on the wagon. "Roit, Ah say we go where tha locals suggest. Mebe git the job done quicker or take a shortcut or whatnot," and then, looking towards the gifted alchemist's fires, he adds, "Best let me 'old on ta one o' those."

And before the party leaves the village, he sees his young linguistics teacher from the night before looking up at him as he stands on the wagon and waving with a warm smile and he adds, "Mebe we can stop back through here on our way back ta the Lodge?"

Spirits in the Woods (Part One)

Following the villagers’ directions, Donavin navigates the PC's travel off-map onto a lesser-travelled path of Spirit Road towards the east; the same path that the caravan traveled before them. Along the journey, the road branches off several times, typically only for a short distance before rejoining the main road or reaching a dead end. The seemingly endless rows of conifer trees create a serene yet monotonous backdrop. The patch is choked with snowdrifts, making it too narrow for a wagon to traverse easily. The wagon regularly catches on roots or stalls in the snow. These impediments consistently slow the wagon's ordinarily brisk speed to a crawl, as Raini has to "Whoa" the horses continuously so they don't whip the wagon through the rough terrain.

Although Donavin is certain that they are headed in the right direction, Keemul and Lucian do not spot anything on the trail to confirm Don's assurance, As Arlen keeps a keen eye up and out for trouble. When suddenly, he elbows Donavin and points ahead: Two incorporeal spirits approach the PCs - transparent humanoid shapes outlined only by the snow, as if the forest itself were clinging to an invisible person! - Each looks at the party for a moment, then moves slowly toward them...

The spirits are about 30 feet from Arlen and Donavin, who are about 10 feet in front of the Horse-drawn Wagon. Lucian is just behind the wagon. The road is just wide enough to accommodate the vehicle (10 feet), with difficult terrain anywhere off-road.

"We can hear what they have to say or not. We can easily circumvent the slow-moving spirits and be on our way if you wish. My vote is to listen."

To the spirits, Raini says "We mean you no harm."

Raini then holds all actions as he waits for the others to decide.

"Let them inhabit me. If you believe that they aren't strong enough to do anything, I trust you, Raini." Donavin steps forwards and offers out a hand. He was confident that even if said spirits were strong enough to do more than offered, he had the strength of will to withstand such a threat.

More than anything, he wanted to hear their story and what had happened. If nothing else, it would be a great tale to tell back at the lodge!

Keemul looks on the fence about volunteering, but is also just retreating from his 'smash everything' mindset. So he can't tell whether to be relieved or annoyed someone else stepped up first. "Do these sorts understand us? It'd be just our luck if nothing did around here."

Spirits in the Woods (Part Two)

A spirit enters Raini's and Donavin's bodies, as they open themselves up to it's supernatural influences.

Raini:

You see flashes of memory as the caravan is beset by a man-sized grey-furred feline with eight legs shining blue eyes all the while harried by a humanoid thief that appears to have a fox’s head and tail...

Raini's Recall Knowledge (Nature) DC 19:

The feline creature is a Poracha. You may ask one question about it (ex. Offenses, Defenses, Magical Powers?...).

Critical Failure (above check):

The feline creature is a Kami possessing the body of two Panthers, capable of attacking like the apex predators they are, as well as casting spells as a full sorcerer. They have a malicious Gaze Attack, prompting you to Avert Gaze while engaging it.

Raini may attempt the check above at no penalty first. Another PC trained in Nature may attempt the check at a -2 "second-hand" penalty after hearing Raini's account.

Donavin:

You witness the fox-faced humanoid escape from a battle, and follow him to a clearing deeper in the woods. There, you observe the him open up a colored sack and grab fistfuls of treasure, and hold them up to sparkle in the light with a wicked grin...

Donavin's Recall Knowledge (Society) DC 10:

The fox-faced man is a kitsune.

Donavin may attempt the check above at no penalty first. Another PC trained in Society may attempt the check at a -2 "second-hand" penalty after hearing Donavin's account.

Raini welcomes the spirit into his body, thrilled to share memories. At first, there is no sensation. Then, the memories flood in. It is overwhelming at first until the spirit directs the focus exactly where Raini needs it - to the caravan.

Raini sees flashes of memory as the caravan is beset by a man-sized grey-furred feline with eight legs shining blue eyes all the while harried by a humanoid thief that appears to have a fox’s head and tail.

"No, the caravan is not okay. It was attacked!"

Raini thinks hard about the encounter, poring over his training to determine what that thing is.

As the spirit departs, Raini collects his thoughts. Once he feels better, he shares with the group.

"Apparently a Poracha and a fox-like creature attacked the caravan. A poracha is a man-sized grey-furred feline with eight legs and shining blue eyes. The fox-like being is some type of humanoid with a fox's head and tail. It was some type of thief or rogue. The caravan is not okay."

I would like to know more about magical powers of the poracha please. Also, I updated my perception in my character profile per my new foible.

Donavin's eyes roll into the back of his head and then he suddenly jerks forward, and looks at the others. There is something different about him. He seems more skittish, his right leg is shaking as he stands there and considers what he has seen, before telling the others.

"I saw a humanoid creature, one with the face of a fox, maybe the same thing that Raini saw. I - or the spirit - chased it, deep into the woods until they reached a clearing.". He paused a moment reliving it again. That wicked grin was haunting him.

"He opened up a sack of treasure, watching them sparkle in the light. It was a colourful sack and he grabbed fistfuls of it before turning to face me, and grinning.. it was not a nice grin."

With that, the spirits depart, but not without some lingering collateral impact upon their hosts here.

Raini:

You remember tending to a kitten-aged Poracha once as a favor to a mentor you had whose name was [redacted]. It was incredibly intelligent, capable of short range teleports with varying frequency between intervals - making it truly difficult to babysit indeed! - as well as physically melding with objects of about it's same size. You remember once tracking it down using Detect Magic and locating it by spying a Transmutative aura on a red [redacted], and got the feeling it sensed you coming as it teleported back out of the [redacted] several feet away.

Waiting to hear from the other two - as well as Lucian - in terms of wanting to attempt the checks above, else, I will push the scene...

I'm hoping to pick up Society soon, but for now Keemul is mostly skill-free!

"Whoa, it sounds incredible!" Keemul marvels at talk of the visions. "And it was in detail, too? That I'd like to try!"

He throws himself in the spirits' direction if they're still around, and starts imploring one to share its power again. After a short while, or if called back by the group, he gives up. "I suppose we should try to swing by the caravan based on this new knowledge," he says, as if only just remembering their plight. "Any of this scenery look similar to what you saw?"

Lucian:

You remember reading about a Poracha from a children's book terrorizing the adults and tantalizing their children. It has an ability to compel enemies that attack it to instead attack eachother, as the group of young protagonists ultimately defeated in by standing at least 15 feet apart and pelting it with rocks.

A wee bit unsophisticated fer me wit' stones an' whatnot, but Ah do favor th'idea uv stayin' away and hittin' it..." and silvery light crackled an sparked around his upheld hand, "but lahk Ah said, Ah willna be usin' stones ta pelt it."
