(#1-06) "Lost on Spirit Road" (Inactive)

Game Master rainzax

A shipment of relics on its way to Minkai vanished somewhere in the Forest of Spirits, a dense woodland home to kami and spirits of all sorts. In search of the missing shipment, Pathfinder agents travel to a remote village, where they uncover secrets of this enigmatic forest.

Going to start this mission on asking that you all integrate your Downtime Skills into the Back Story.

For the past month, you have been helping Venture-Captain Amara Li establish a new Museum in Minkai, handling precious and storied relics sacred to the Tian-Min people, whether recently rediscovered, reclaimed from other nations, or transferred from national archives, to bring prosperity and pride back to the Region.

Each PCs has come into contact with one of these relics below, as towards establishing it in a special display in the Museum:

1) Calligraphy Pen
2) Cracked Teapot
3) Jade Tooth
4) Oni Mask
5) Reptile-skin Longbow
6) Silk Robe
7) Wooden Sandals

Please roll a seven-sided die, or simply choose a relic above, or alternatively, invent a different relic altogether(?), and answer at least two (2) of the following questions in your opening post:

Q: How did you travel / come to Minkai? For how long have you been here helping?
Q: Does your relic have a special history? Is there a story connected with it?
Q: What is your relic's name? What does it look like? What are it's powers?
Q: Under what circumstances did you come into contact with this relic?
Q: Why does Amara Li entrust you with this relic?

In doing so, please incorporate your Downtime Skills into your response, as well as use this opportunity to showcase an introduction to your character. As may happen with play-by-post, if by chance two submissions roll/choose the same relic at the same time, consider modifying your story by declaring the relics "twin" in some form or fashion, or, perhaps twine the stories together in some way?...

Character (Downtime):

Wow, I've never seen a PbP GM go this all in on the lore/RP elements. This should be pretty interesting.

Arlen had explicitly asked to work with Amara Li and further her progress on the new museum in Minkai. With his fervent study of demons, Arlen had come to realize that what many of the people of Minkai referred to as Kami were similar in nature to the demons he hunted. The few differences that did exist, however, mattered little to him, many Kami were dangerous and needed to be quelled. However, Arlen quickly was shocked by his interactions with the people of Minkai on the subject that some Kami were indifferent or even helpful to mortals. This would make his task far different than that of his demon one, the simple mass genocide of the species. That would be my crit fail of lore demons, they are not the same as Kami and I can't just go around killing every kami I meet!

While meeting with a contact in Minkai for the museum, Arlen found a tablet of protective runes that warded against evil kami intrusion. He longed to inscribe the runes alongside those of his wards against demons, and decided he would at some point in his journey to add this tablet to the museum's collection. Amara Li, of course, noticed the similarities between Arlen's tattoo-sprawled flesh and those of the tablet and allowed Arlen to work with the relic specifically, much to Arlen's pleasure.

I rolled randomly and then used a website for random magical effect. It got interesting in a hurry!

Lucien stared at the bow. The question going through his mind was a simple, yet extremely complicated one. "Why? Why in the name of all that is bloody good and 'oly would any daft twit 'ave spent the time ta make this?"

The bow was magic. That, at least, was appealing. Lucien loved all things associated with academic lore. He'd poured years of his life into his studies and the uncovering of arcane lore specifically, but this? He had no idea what to make of this.

The bow itself was covered in Grippli skin, a color pattern that was primarily black, but varied through red and yellow patches. His response when he first saw it, "Eh, Ah s'pose some people git queezy over such things, but there's certain magics attached ta life. Now, let's see what incredible life force this wee beauty 'as..." and it was all downhill from there.

The bow, which Lucien had learned was called "The Dart Frog's Revenge" did not have any sort of poison qualities as he'd expected. It didn't make you jump higher or farther. It didn't help you camouflage into your surroundings. None of those amazing Grippli qualities. It was the tongue. It made your tongue grow long enough to touch your nose. The great mystery solved. The amazing disappointment discovered.

When Amara-Li requested Lucien Zindelis, renowned student of the arcane, to investigate this magic relic, she probably expected it to pay off more than this. It was not going to be fun delivering the disappointing news. "Then agin," he mused, "some birds are into weird stuff. Mebe she'll find a use for it."

Donavin had recently arrived in Minkai having been travelling since he had won the Balgirdtrek in the lands of the Linnorm Kings. As a Horizon Hunter, he was keen on travelling to the far reaches of the world and the lands of Minkai had intrigued him as soon as he had heard of them. Deep forests, full of magic and spirits reminded him of his home in the Verduran Forest, and yet it was so different.

On his journey to Minkai, he had found a dead human body in the woods, surrounded by a pack of wolves - also dead. Investigating the site, Donavin had found a jade tooth clutched in the hand of the body. Donavin intuitively knew that this was something worth holding on to and upon reaching Minkai had been informed that it was The Jade Dragon's Tooth, a relic which let one take on the form of a dragon if placed into your mouth.

The fact that he had brought it this far safely was enough to tell Amara Li that he was a dependable enough person to carry it further.

Keemul, an unreasonably buff gnome rarely out of his fine armor, has had a very enjoyable month. When he heard tell a Lodge was being built in Minkai, nothing would stop him from jumping aboard a ship bound for thousands of miles beyond the Inner Sea. Such is his fanatic interest in all things Tian.

As he has told anyone who will listen, he was a contender in the last Ruby Phoenix Tournament eight years ago. What he doesn't say outright, but readily admits if asked, is that he was utterly trounced in the first round. He has reenacted this "epic duel" and his many other gladiatorial matches in front of receptive audiences on the Minkai streets. Unfortunately, most folk around here aren't as interested in such things, and Keemul has heavily revised the course of events. All told, it makes for very few coins thrown his way, mostly to shut him up.

The gnome has been primarily assigned menial work as the Lodge is shored up around him; like hauling construction materials, cooking, and entertaining. In his spare time, he tried his hand at the work of more experienced agents, poring over tomes in search of leads on artifacts. Something he is entirely unequipped for, but he persisted. It was only when he cut his foot on some pottery shards while cleaning that his work paid off. Thanks to the constant reading and having seen some relics being hauled in, he could tell these pieces were part of a teapot undergoing meticulous reassembly.

These pieces were rushed to the artisans doing the repairs. When added to the pot, it sealed its own cracks and became whole again, even going so far as to fill itself. The magic of the pot appeared to extend to the liquid it created. Not a major effect, the people in charge could tell. But still interesting. Some theorized the relic belonged to a specific family, and could recognize those of the bloodline to use an unknown true function on. Its appearance instantly returned to that of burnished bronze, despite being ceramic. Further tests have proven inconclusive, leading the experts to start searching for the right clan.

Keemul was immediately given a wider list of duties and free reign over his schedule. He hasn't struck gold again, but he'll bumble into something eventually.

Unlike most druids, Raini has no grove of his own to tend. No territory or glade or glen whispers his name or favors him personally. That's not to say that Raini isn't a lover of nature, mind you, it just means that all of the world needs tending and Raini has wandering feet and gypsy blood. Hauling his meager belongings and his trusted companion Sasha, Raini set off for another far-flung adventure. This time, his destination and home for a spell is Minkai. He had heard of some Society work being done and jumped at the chance to see more of this glorious world. He and his panther traveled by wagon, by boat, and even briefly in a large balloon full of hot air! It's only been about a month, but Raini has settled in quite well, helping Amara Li on negotiations and diplomatic missions.

During some much needed rest, Raini decided to earn a few coins. As always, the bargain hunter in him would buy low and sell high until he exhausted his available time and available clients. In this particular case, however, he certainly ended up with more than he bargained for. On his last pursuit of a final payoff from having traded up, Raini got wind of a desperate fellow, down on his luck. He was trying to peddle a hideous mask, claiming it had magical properties.

Raini tracked him down and listened as the man sought to sell the oni mask. For those who don't know, oni are strange troll-like demons known to frequent these lands. And this mask was ugly!

Having trained in the School of Spells, Raini used magic to detect emanations from the mask and was startled when it glowed brightly! Traces of transmutation and strong divination magic coursed through the mask. Still a bargain hunter, the druid settled on a price enough to secure the mask.

The tiny gnome rushed back to Amara Ti to present the mask, hoping it was the very one they were searching for. Indeed, through magical testing and exhaustive research, it is discovered that it is the Mask of Rashamon. Interesting, the mask looks like a scary troll with a 3rd eye. The power of the mask lies in connecting mystically to the 3rd eye to read the auras of others. We are working on tracing it back to the family of origin, but have yet been unsuccessful.

Having contributed as much as possible, Raini has taken his leave for now.

Having secured the "Tablet of Protective Runes", the "Dart Frog's Revenge", the "Jade Dragon's Tooth", and the "Mask of Rashamon" safely inside the burgeoning lodge in Sakakabe, Amara Li has called for a morning meeting at the Kiniro Kyomai teahouse, just down Way of the Songbird.

As the PCs arrive one by one, having up until this point maybe have collaborated on this project or that (there have been several groups of Pathfinders commissioned with various contract duties and lengths, etc), or maybe not, as it becomes clear that the group invited to this occasion have, through a careful vetting process, been selected for a special mission.

As you sit, without a word yet - as a proper etiquette wouldn't permit talking until after the tea has been poured - Amara Li gently tilts a burnished bronze teapot to deliver a piping hot stream of honey-golden liquid to a precise volume into five small ceramic handleless cups. Each cup has depicted on it a single element - Earth, Fire, Metal, Water, and Wood - and the scent now emanating from each of your cups beckons you.

After placing the pot down, she finally speaks "I fear that misfortune may have struck some of our fellow agents. Furthermore, while I hope that you can help them return here to safety, it is probable that the task I have to request of you may instead center around recovering what you can from the caravan, and if it is safe to do so, to complete the mission in their stead."

She pauses a moment and nods, which signifies that the tea is of perfect temperature to drink, and that custom would hold that refusal at this juncture would constitute a mild gesture of rudeness - or as some would consider - a knell of misfortune to come!

...

Amara continues:

“Last year, I received a donation of relics from Taldor. The route is lengthy and complicated, so I will spare you unnecessary details. A caravan carrying the relics safely arrived in Hongal to the north, where it met up with a pair of Pathfinder agents, Lin Po and Ti Lan. These agents inspected the cargo, sent me a missive indicating that all was in order, and joined a second caravan to take the Spirit Road through the Forest of Spirits. The journey is understandably long, taking over two months to complete. Still, the caravan is late, and I fear that they may have run into trouble along the way..." Another brief pause, unsure perhaps whether to mourn, or to hope?

"They were supposed to reach Sakakabe two weeks ago. While it’s possible that they were waylaid in the northernmost parts of Minkai, I believe it’s far more likely that they ran into trouble in the Forest of Spirits, a mystical place that shelters departed souls and most of the world’s kami. Kami are spiritual guardians with a deep connection to certain living locations or living things. The locals pay great respect to the kami, never intruding further into the forest than their one coastal road, the Spirit Road, and a number of small settlements built around shrines." She unrolls a map upon the table, depicting the road and and the villages, leaving it for you to take with you.

"This should make tracking the caravan simple, since there’s only a single road along which they should have had to rest or resupply at some point. I need you to check each of the roadside settlements until you find the last one to have seen the caravan, then track it from there and figure out what happened.” She traces her finger along the road, popping it at each village north along the way.

Cautionarily: “Be sure to respect the kami and the local traditions honoring them; I don’t want you to come to harm in your journey. The kami are mostly benevolent, so long as they receive the proper respect, but there are some dangers that might have harried the caravan. Bandits, hobgoblins, and giants, among other creatures, dwell within the forest. The forest also hosts some aggressive plants and animals, not to mention malign spirits such as the oni, the sworn enemies of the kami. The locals will know more than I of what perils to expect.”

...

Donavin Tambe'thala:

You have heard terrifying tales! The Forest of Spirits is named for it's incorporeal undead denizens, including fell spirits who "possess" travelers' bodies only to horrifically murder their hosts' entire company, including horses or other driving beasts, and finally, the host themself!

Raini Riversong:

In your travels, you have crossed paths with folk who have travelled through The Forest of Spirits, which is densely populated with kami who are mostly benign, but able to "possess" living creatures to share memories rather than exert control, as way of communicating, perhaps akin to how "civilized" peoples will shake hands (or other gestures) in greeting.

Keemul arrives on foot, likely late, already bursting with excitement. He sets his weaponry outside the building, as his hammer is the sort one might see in an ogre's hands, longer than the gnome is tall. But that is the last passive action he takes. He tears into the teahouse a moment later and vaults into an unoccupied seat. Surprisingly, he manages to avoid speaking until tea is served.

After careful consideration, he picks the Fire cup. With his eyes more focused on the teapot while drinking, he nods vaguely at the proposition of a rescue mission. By the time Amara Li is done talking, his eyes are wide and trained on her, and his tea is gone.

"I read about the Forest of Spirits! Didn't make much sense on paper, so don't quiz me. But it sounds like a scream," Keemul says, pushing hard against a somber atmosphere. "So, you say most of these kami are nice, but people still give them their space. Could something have made them mad? Eh, more likely it was one of the real bad guys that pulled something. But what if it didn't even happen in the woods, and they got waylaid somewhere else?"

Lucian's walk into the room was, if we're being honest, a touch more of a stumble. He may or may not have indulged in some less than gentlemanly behaviours the night before.

He looks up with mildly blurred vision and bows a silent greeting to Venture-Captain Amara-Li. Sure he's at subpar capacity, but he is nonetheless a scholar and had schooled himself on how to handle himself with proper cultural etiquette before making the trek to Minkai, hence he knew not to disrupt the silence of the room. Besides, the quiet gave him a chance to think about the lovely night he'd had. A little saki, a little flirting, a little more saki, a little more than just flirting. What was his drinking companion's name? Ling? Fang? Something with an "ng," he was pretty sure...and she was just pretty.

He is pulled out of his reveries as the Venture-Captain pours tea into the cup in front of him. Interesting cup. As he notices the cups placed in front of the others at the table, he quickly picks up on the elemental theme of the cups. His had fire. Primal energy that could be both a tool and a massive force of destruction. Yeah, that fit him pretty well. Useful tool as a scholar and researcher, destructive force as both arcane caster and alchemist. He spared a thought to wonder if Amara-Li had chosen that cup for him deliberately.

Following the pouring of the tea, Lucian listened to the Venture-Captain deliver her request for their assistance. He briefly scanned the table and decided these companions looked passable enough to help keep him alive.

As she finished her request, she silently indicated the tea was at the proper temperature to drink. It was good. Being a bit of a connoisseur of teas, he made a mental note to ask her about it later. However, she seemed to have more to share. By the time she'd finished laying out her request in full, the scholar's mind had already generated some more questions.

"Roit, luv," he began, "if we're ta be 'eadin' down this 'obviously safe' path what led ta their potential demise, are we at least gettin' some mode of transport? 'orses? A wagon? Sumfin' we kin convey yeh're trinket on if theirs 'as been rendered unusable? And furthermore, d'ye 'ave any insights inta 'ow we moit more readily endear ourselves ta the locals we moit encounter? An' moit we 'ave a description uv yer agents wut no one wut done 'em in moit pass themselves off as 'em ta sucker us?" And the final, unspoken question that drifted through his mind was, "Is Ling...Fang? Yang. Pert sure it was Yang. Is she still in mah room?"

And in case Lucian may have gained anything in his studies that might help in interacting with the locals, I'll roll a Lore: academia check, but it's actually the exact same bonus for society if that would be your preferred roll for him to make. I just love playing up the scholar aspect of Lucian.

Donavin had arrived on time, as he was keen to impress Amara Li with his reliability. He sat there watching the ceremony with interest. It was the first of the kind that he had ever experienced in Minkai and he very nearly stuff it up but luckily managed to notice that nobody else had gone to drink when he went to drink his tea.

It did mean that he got to have a good look at the teacup that he had been handed. That was the symbol for water, wasn't it? He wondered if Amara Li knew? Surely not, it was hardly as if it was something he advertised, or knew that much about anyway. He offered a smile to the group, hoping that his natural charisma would shine through a little.

To the others, who had not met him before, Donavin was a well built and handsome man. The elven heritage was obvious in him - short, pointed ears and bronze eyes where the pupil was smaller than in the average human and shoulder-length blond hair topped his head, that looked as if it had been cut by taking his own blade to it. That blade was at his side, a mean looking scimitar of Elven make with a bronze handle, matched with an equally bronzed breastplate, with a stylised dragon head on the front of it. This was clearly a man who cared about his aesthetic just as much as his ability to function.

"Ladies, Gentlemen." Donavin will call for attention with only a slightly raised voice. "I have heard some stories most alarming of this Forest of Spirits. It is named for the undead denizens who dwell within. Foul beings without bodies of their own, they feed by possessing the bodies of the unwary, and murdering their companions, animals and then finally the unfortunate host themselves." He informs the others.

"Steel yourselves, the days ahead promise to challenge your very being if you are not ready."

Arlen arrives slightly early to the meeting and patiently waits for the rest of his team to arrive. When offered tea, Arlen noticed his cup had the symbol for metal upon it, likely for his reliability, steel will, and directness. Not having traveled to Minkai previous to this mission, Arlen watches the others for signals on when to drink his tea.

During introductions, Arlen introduced himself and explained his tattooed appearance, "Hello everyone. I am Arlen Bales. My appearance may be a little shocking to some of you, but I've spent years researching the power of runes and wards in order to hunt demons. These runes are currently mostly for protection, but I'm still slowly adding wards for harming demons as well."

After hearing the mission briefing, Arlen waits for others to ask their questions. He isn't the type to do so, preferring to figure things out in the field, but values extra information his allies can pull as it can occasionally prove useful.

Keemul marvels at Donavin's pronouncement. "Whoa, really? I didn't realize, they probably wouldn't try to broadcast that sort of thing. But I can handle some corpses grown too wispy for their boots!" He turns to Amara Li for confirmation on the matter.

"Shocking? No, I like the tattoos," the gnome assures Arlen. "Everybody should have a look. Why, I know a few back home with tattoos of me! Not the expensive magical stuff, I'll admit. They certainly aren't done to ward me off!"

Raini dresses in his best outfit. However, with the limited funds he has and the recent purchases for gear, he finds his rainy day savings being depleted sorely. "Thank goodness I made that recent trade and tucked away a few coins." the gnome muses as he picks at his nice but worn outfit, hoping it is good enough to present himself at the ceremony.

He makes his way to the teahouse with Sasha in tow. She's so used to being dragged into civilized towns it doesn't phase her much anymore. At the entrance, however, Raini asks that she stay outside. "Don't give me that look. We are strangers here and they hold to tradition more than we are used to. I don't want to offend anyone." Sasha cocks her head and shows her teeth. "You staying outside for a bit is not offensive to you. Quit pouting." chides the druid. The panther makes a soft growl. "I don't know, take a nap or something. I'm sure you can find something to amuse you." With that, Raini makes his way inside.

Unfamiliar with societal expectations, Raini keeps quiet and waits for instructions or guidance from his host. As he is offered a cup, he muses at the marking of the Earth. "Ah, quite fitting as I am a steward of mother earth.". Raini drinks the tea at the customary times, as he notices the host's prompts.

As the ceremony concludes, he does have a few questions for Amara Li.

"Would you be so kind as to share with us the description of the Pathfinders as well as a list of the contents you are looking to recover from the caravan?"

The power of the Teapot of the Elements weaves it's subtle magic through it's five guests, imbuing them with a fortune in accordance with their future alignment to their chosen or assigned element. Each of you in turn feel the energy of Earth, Fire, Metal, Water, or Wood suffusing your spirit, and inspiring you towards great heroic deeds!

Hero points in this Scenario will be distributed for exhibiting the qualities of your Element, described for each of you below.

...

Amara looks first towards Keemul "I see you are the lively one of the group." She portends "While it is certainly possible they angered kami, I consider that unlikely, having been given explicit instructions such as yourselves. Furthermore, if anyone in the villages you come across in the Forest has seen members of the caravan, I wouldn't hesitate to follow that lead."

Keemul (Fire) will be able to gain a Hero Point upon displaying the qualities of Propriety, Enthusiasm, and Passion.

Turning now to Lucian, she giggles "Perhaps you labor under a misapprehension?" Indicating his cup. At the same moment, Ling appears from the teahouse's Main Office, gives instructions to another server, and walks by the elf, whispering "That is the symbol for Wood, silly!" before whisking away to another administrative task. Amara continues "We'll supply you with two Wagons and six Riding Horses in the event our worst fears are confirmed - you can Ride I assume, 'Love'?" She teases him once more.

Lucian (Wood) will be able to gain a Hero Point upon displaying the qualities of Benevolence, Creativity, and Luxuriance.

Now to Donavin, shifting tactics now to imbue her chosen five with courage at the half-elf's fearmongering "While I'm sure such stories exist, that has yet to be my personal experience having travelled through Forest of Spirits on several occasions. In either case, I am optimistic that you possess the requisite qualities to meet such a challenge should it arise!" Indicating his cup with a nod.

Donavin (Water) will be able to gain a Hero Point upon displaying the qualities of Wisdom, Aptitude, and Mental Strength.

She takes in Arlen's person, looking up and down at the markings across his body, and answers his concerns "Perhaps in other parts of the world, yes, but I suspect that here, dedicating your Temple to your life's purpose will be viewed with honor proportional to the vigor with with you apply yourself. As I see you well know, it is often Action that speaks with the greatest Volume!" Hoping to re-frame the reservation he seems to hold concerning his appearance.

Arlen (Metal) will be able to gain a Hero Point upon displaying the qualities of Righteousness, Ambition, and Persistence.

Finally, Amara turns to Raini, and answers his (and Lucian's) question "Lin Po is a short, heavy-set man with a round, clean-shaven face and an irrepressible sense of humor - i think Keemul, you will find kindred in him - whereas Ti Lan is a taller, athletic woman with broad shoulders and stern demeanor - perhaps like our friend Arlen here - and their company some several members strong (They had free reign to recruit as they saw fit). I do hope my descriptions suffice."

Raini (Earth) will be able to gain a Hero Point upon displaying the qualities of Honesty, Nurturing, and Stability.

...

With that - unless there are additional questions - Amara wraps up the ceremony, and as Ling comes over, she hands her the Teapot of the Elements, to be reset in it's rightful place (and only used for missions of grave importance!) upon a display mantle within the shop. Ling directs some attendants to clean up, and bows first to the party, then to Amara (and for a moment longer), before retiring to her office.

When the PCs go outside, they see Sasha sniffing the strange-smelling Ogre Hammer leaning against the Kiniro Kyomai teahouse, and turning the corner, see the (2) Wagons and (6) Riding Horses ready to be taken up. Amara presents them the Map, and wishes them luck!

...

Hero Points
Perhaps a little unorthodox, I'd like the PCs to take control of awarding themselves their second Hero Point for this Scenario (For those new to PFS2: You start with one for "free", and earn a second at some point during the adventure's runtime). Which means, if you feel your PC has acted in accordance with their Element, please write a short script to justify your claim, and I will record the self-granted Hero Point where I am tracking them (see my GM Profile Bar). Let me know if anyone has any questions in the Discussion tab about this process.

...

So. What is the party's plan?

1) Please decide how you will travel (Horse? Wagon? Walk?).
2) This includes in-character talk about marching order, or tactical (combat) considerations.
3) Those who haven't, please choose a default Exploration Mode Activity and write it into your Character Profile Bar.
4) Finally, go ahead and make your Phase Two decisions for your character as they prepare to become Lost on the Spirit Road!

"Don't worry, we'll have this done in a trice," Keemul nods. "I hope some of those villagers speak Taldane. I'm going to learn Tien, I want to, just maybe not when I'm on a mission or working at the Lodge. When I have more time."

Upon exiting the teahouse, the gnome grabs his hammer from its resting place, pulling it away from the panther. It takes him two three-sixty turns like a hammer thrower before the weapon is sitting secure and light over one shoulder. From there, the adventure begins!

Keemul mostly walks alongside the cart, to keep himself busy and to spare it from the weight of his gear. He climbs aboard only if he starts lagging behind, leaving a furrow in its wake. "Yeah, we can't all be at the front," he agrees with Lucian. "You'll have a good view of the carnage that way. I may be Tymon's second- or maybe third-best gladiator, but I've got the most style and the biggest fanbase. Trust me, anything that messes with us is going to be flattened!"

Keemul obviously wants to walk up front, and there probably won't be a priority issue there unless we have to be in a narrow line somewhere. Then, he'll grudgingly do the logical thing and defer to Arlen. Unless Arlen doesn't stand in front considering his great mobility, I'm just assuming.

Lucien sits aboard the wagon happily letting the "meat shields" arrange themselves where the danger might be. He takes a moment to ensure that his items are all where they should be, especially his spellbook, which is strapped in on his left side under his arm in what some might think of as "shoulder holster style."

After a yawn and stretch, Lucien's eyes roll back and he begins muttering in a gravelly voice words that are, perhaps Draconic, Abyssal, Infernal, or some mixture. As he does so, a strange, purplish-black light begins shining and swirling around him, suddenly, he stops speaking and it dissipates. Noticing anyone looking, he says, "Sorry, just stretchin' out all the muscles."

The Border Village (Part One)

The PCs travel by Horse and Wagon for a couple weeks through the Osogen Grasslands, populated with nomadic herders that call the rolling plains home, but none of whom have seen another caravan passing though matching the description the PCs give them.

At the great teamster skill of Lucian, as well as the deep conversational rapport Raini develops with his driving horses, each piloting one of the wagons, the PCs effectively trim several days off the expected transit, so much so that Donavin struggles to keep up on his single horse, while Arlen and Keemul must very early on cease their walking and board a wagon to avoid slowing the party's progress.

PCs gain a +2 circumstance bonus to Track (Survival) checks made to locate the Lost Caravan for the duration of the adventure.

When the PCs enter the Forest of Spirits, the atmosphere changes. The forest is cool and damp, and profoundly alive. Snow blankets the ground and clings to branches of towering pine and spruce trees. Birds, rodents, foxes, deer, bears, and numerous other creatures roam through the woods, keeping their distance from the road. The density of the trees suggests that logging is almost unheard of in this forest. Animals are not the only creatures moving out in the woods; the PCs occasionally see unexplained movement in the trees and rocks or feel like someone is watching them. As the PCs progress through the forest, they visit several small villages, none of which have seen the caravan the PCs are looking for. They can find signs of passage from several
caravans and groups that travelled on foot, and the remains of campsites right next to the trail. However, there are no indications that any of these groups came to harm.

Eventually, as the sun poises itself to set, the PCs arrive at a village nestled deeper in the forest’s outskirts: Ayaichi. The map shows that the next village along the road past Ayaichi may be slightly further than they would be willing to travel near dark, which, while not altogether impossible, leads to the consensus to stop here for now, and make the assessment that so long as this village isn't altogther hostile (none have been so far!), that it would be wise to hunker down here until the early morning.

With that, the PCs pull up, and are approached by a group of three humans - perhaps, judging by their apparent ages, two grandparents and their grandchild? - who begin speaking in a language the party cannot understand: "你為什麼在這裡,你想要什麼?" They ask - the fact of this being an "ask" clear in their body language followed by a pause, presumably to allow the party to formulate a response!

Assuming he comes up with something, he acts upon it. To Lucian's initial skepticism, Donavin's pantomime manages to confirm the villager's suspicions that indeed they, an assortment of foreigners, are passing through and seek shelter for the night. The young boy puts his fists up and looks at Donavin, as if to say "fight?" and charges him with gusto, aiming for his vital organs. Meanwhile, Lucian picks up on an exchange between the elders that seems to indicate something to the effect of "again" or "another". Raini, hearing his elven companion's analysis, steps closer to press the issue with the elders, who seems to confirm the suspicion that there was an "again" or "another". The elder man holds up four fingers at first, until the elder woman corrects him - slapping him on the forehead - insisting instead on five fingers be held up - lifting the old man's thumb to complete his fifth finger, which she points to and smiles, proud in her abilities to communicate!

A moment later, a handful of other villagers come out, mature-aged men and women holding spears, and seeing the PCs, speak more in their language to eachother and make gestures that re-affirm once again the "again" or "another" concept, and when the elder woman holds up five fingers, they nod, and hold up five fingers in agreement, and the woman slaps her husband on the forehead a second time. "Aaah-yee" He screams in pain or annoyance.

Beckoning the PCs come forward - even Keemul and Arlen, who up until this point they had been ignoring - these new villagers begin drawing shapes and forms in the dirt, either with their spears from a standing position, or, as one of them crouches low, with his finger. They continue to speak in the language the PCs don't understand as they draw. They seem to insist that the PCs enter this "conversation" by adding their own "story" in the form of pictures.

Please describe your method of interaction here, filtered through the Nature, Hunting Lore, or Survival skills, or justification for a fourth skill or check not listed, as well as what you are trying to ask or understand.

Horizon Hunters

Exploration Mode Default-Perception (looking for threats) Ancient Elf, Universalist Wizard, Scholar (arcana), AC 16; Fort +3; Ref +6; Will +5 HP 12, Perception +3; Speed 30 ft.

Lucian's studies have included looking at the written communication of very ancient, and what might be viewed as very uncivilized, cultures that used picture-based symbolism in things like cave drawing. Pulling from this sort of background, he begins trying his hand at symbolic communication.

He is of two minds at this point as the "again" might mean the other caravan came through, but the four corrected to five could be that group or his own group of five. He decides to try addressing the concept of finding if they've seen another party first, and then following up with a question regarding bedding or housing for the night.

He draws a crude wagon, as he's no great artist, and the representation of five figures in and around it. He then draws the sun rising and setting to indicate days, then draws another wagon with depictions of himself and his crew (including pointy ears for the Elves and the Gnome's massive weapon to clarify it's his group). He then does the gesture of five and makes a questioning face as he points to the first group and then his group.

If you're allowing it, I'm trying Lore: Academia for Lucien's study of ancient non-written languages to make the communication work.

Lore: Academia: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25

After that interaction, he draws a line from his representation of his group towards a crudely-drawn house and then draws the figures of his party lying down on bed-looking things (again, he's not an artist) in order to try to learn if and where they can stay (as the villagers seem to understand we want shelter, but I don't believe they've confirmed that they will provide it).

Not sure if I need to roll a second check for that, but just in case...

Donavin will raise a fist and smile, and then open his palm to show that he comes in peace to the child. As fun as a bit of boisterous play sounded, it might not make the best of impressions if he were to beat up a child.

"Watch" He says, pointing to his eye and then if he has attention will proclaim "Turma" in his Mage-Voice, a bronze shield of force springing up in front of him. It was the only magic he knew, but he was proud enough of it that he thought it could impress.

This done, Donavin will use trackers signs to try and make his own point alongside Lucian, feeling quite pleased with himself that thus far he had been understood by the villagers.

Raini will work with Lucian and build on his communication to the villagers. He will also use the map provided by Amara Li and tie that to his crude drawing skills. Between his knowledge of nature and his skills in survival, Raini works to paint a picture of the current team searching for the missing team and wagon. It is equal parts exciting and frustrating.

Arlen watches the crowd with interest but understands that more noise or confusion won't help get past a language barrier. Instead of joining the main crowd, he steps a little off to the side to create his own story in the ground. "By the way guys, the one crouching is their warrior leader. You can tell by the way he moves and looks at us."

Like drawing wards, but of my own tales. This is something I can do. Arlen then draws an image of a women being attacked by a demon, being carted to a nearby town, then passing away. He then draws an image of a boy running to a city, then an image of camping at night, then an image of a large demon attacking the boy. The next image is one that matches his tattoos which is then followed by an image of the demon losing its arm, the final image in the sequence is the symbol in-between the demon and the boy.

Arlen then draws an arrow from the boy to a man, then a desert and the sun, then people fighting in ranks against demons, but not with weapons. He then draws an image of the desert, then a coffin, and then a spear with runes similar to those on his hands. The next image if of the spear in a desert city, then the man attacking demons with the spear leading men behind him. The next image is of the men throwing the single man into a hole with a demon and taking the spear, then the single man climbing out of the hole, then walking across the desert.

The last series of images is the man finding an oasis in the desert, then an image of a hand and a needle, and finally an image of a hand with runes on it matching those of the spear. The very last image is of the man fighting many, many demons.

The Border Village (Part Three)

...Ooh! The child marvels at Donavin's spell, and tries to punch it! CrunCH!! He lets out a scream of pain, and retreats behind his grandmother, who swiftly disciplines him with a smack on his rearside, which he partially dodges, rolling with the blow around her other leg, letting out a second scream of anticipated (but, avoided) pain. The grandfather moves to comfort the boy, touching his head gently, who is now hiding from the party behind these two elders. But after a beat, he pokes his head back out to look again...

...The Leader looks between Lucian's Sketches and Raini's Map, squinting his eyes to listen to the general tone, punctuated by gestures and movements, of these two foreigners. He speaks back and forth with the other hunters of this village - only one of them seeming to "disagree" before the other quickly "bring him around" - before making his own drawings to "answer" those that Lucian put down...

...The boy runs now over to see Arlen's work. He points to the "single man climbing out of the hole" then points to himself, nods his head, makes his eyes serious, and flexes his pea-sized biceps. He then makes a sudden charge for Arlen, fists first, and aims his strikes to emphasize his point...

...The Leader's communications seem to confirm the the "again" or "another" referred to another group like you, and that the "five fingers" represents about five weeks. He further demonstrates intentions of hospitality - a final nod of the grandma seems to be the sealing gesture - and opens his arms to lead the party inside their small village - barking a firm but not unkind order at two of the other hunters to see to the party's horses and wagon...

...If perhaps the PCs, now seeing the Fire Circle over the way, were expecting that they might be invited to sit, instead it quickly becomes clear that, while allowed to stay, they are to remain to a segregated side of the village! A place is indicated for them to make small camp, and the Leader holds his hands out to communicate "stay" with a similar firm but not unkind tone he gave his two hunters moments ago, and making sure to make eye contact with each member, is about to turn and join his people around the fire on the opposite end of the settlement...

At least at the moment, Lucian seems to be following the request to stay put. After all, the tribal leader is still right there. However, as the man seems about to turn to leave, Lucian gets his attention, reaches into a belt pouch, and pulls out several pieces of jerky (a day's trail rations) and extends them to the man with a slight bow as a show of gratitude for letting them stay and answering their questions.

Then, assuming that worked and he has the leader's attention, he begins doing a bit of pantomiming things that he believes, based on his studies, might indicate the idea of "dead" and "spirits" and "troubles" to try to ascertain if the kami have been restless and active that these people have noticed. And if possible, he's also trying to convey that he didn't want to ask in front of the children, hence waited respectfully until they were alone to ask.

Lore: Academia: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

While doing all of this, Lucian narrates what he's doing to the rest of the party so they can chime in or not as they desire.

As to whether or not he'll stay put after the tribal leader leaves, that's to be seen.

Assuming that the group they'd been interacting with before was the full village, or at least majority, Lucian would have scanned the crowd for two things: a shaman/tribal mystic/elder scholar type, and secondly, any young, lovely, and apparently unattached young ladies.

Keemul looks on at the series of exchanges in confusion. He obeys the implicit order to stay put, not sounding too fussed about it. "They'll come around, or we'll get tired and find a better-spoken village," he says simply. But even as he sits down, his restlessness over the whole affair is obvious. He idly twirls his hammer around as if making an imaginary rock garden. He gives the others a wider berth than usual, not out of annoyance, but to avoid braining anyone.

This goes on for only several minutes before he goes still. Having traveled with him for several weeks, it's easy to recognize this as his next stage of boredom. It won't turn explosive, at least, but he'll soon become a bit of a pain to be around.

"eeeEEEEEhHHHHh!!!!"

...Suddenly it pops from behind the bush near building 1, and throws a dart at Donavin, piercing his calf for 1 damage, and laughing with malicious glee, before ducking back behind the bush to Take Cover...

Arlen and Raini:

You both hear additional creatures (presumably Fey?) around buildings 1, 3, and 4...

Keemul:

You hear additional creatures (presumably Fey?) around buildings 3 and 4...

...

Players, I am going to "abstract away" the villagers (as, unfortunately, my hands are bound in terms of making this Scenario "more interesting" under Society guidelines), meaning you are free to just focus your efforts at dealing with these Fey. The "story" will happen as a post-script.

I will spoiler some useful information if you succeed at (◆) Recall Knowledge check using Nature, so that you may immediately act upon that knowledge. You can check one spoiler per success, or two per critical success. If I need to post more in future rounds, I will do so. Communicating information you recall to your party is a (◇) Free Action on your turn, and you are encouraged to keep it "in character".

Posting on your turn, please use the Symbols (◆), (◆◆), (◆◆◆), (◇), and/or (↺) to clearly denote your three actions, as well as any Reactions you plan to use, posting relevant Trigger and Effect text. Doing so helps me to make sense of the party's actions, and facilitates scribing Combat Posts generally. I appreciate the extra effort you put in here to do so.

"Fey creatures nearby! There are several of them!" warns the druid.

He fires a Ray of Frost at the one he can see near Arlen.
