And here's the first Discussion post.
Languages:
Common = Thylean
Fey and Sylvan are so closely related I'm going to make them the same.

Supreme Being |

No problem. I'll probably not start the game-play thread except for allowing dotting until This weekend at the earliest... so we've got time to play around a bit.
I believe that Jubal is playing a Centaur Cleric of Sydon... though it might be interesting to see if Sydon keeps the holy power flowing if the PC's side with the Five Gods...

Supreme Being |

@ Novyn>> In regards to our earlier conversation regarding Aasimar or Genasi... I would stay away from the Empyreans type race for story reasons... however the Genasi race could be worked into the story pretty easily.

Lysander of Mytros |

Thanks for the invite!
I have to do my actual build (I'm more PF2/SF based, so the change to 5e will take me a bit, but I'm raring to go).
I mainly went with the beleaguered veteran trope for Lysander because I really like the idea of a reluctant hero- especially a prophesized one.I imagine his time as a Centurion would have been the equivalent of NPC Warrior levels, so becoming a lvl 1 PC is a pretty decent power bump. But I also imagine that since the Peace began, battles are fewer and farther between, so how they perceive their new life will be FAR different than the battles of the past.

Supreme Being |

I've put up the first "Gameplay" post to give you guys a chance to adjust your backstories to how the campaign begins. No need to post in this thread until everyone has their final character profiles finished and approved.

Supreme Being |

@Coronus>> Could you clarify something for me. You are a Cleric of Sydon, yet you oppose the Titans. How do you explain this? I'm not against it just wondering how that works out.
Thanks,

Coronus the centaur |

Thanks for the invite!
... though it might be interesting to see if Sydon keeps the holy power flowing if the PC's side with the Five Gods...
How big of an issue will this be in the storyline? Should I course correct now? Or instead of cleric of Sydon, can he just have divine powers, per se, coincidentally carrying a holy symbol of Sydon?
Assuming we sort that, questions on his Background Outlander. It provides a language and a musical instrument. Can I swap for Leatherworking kit and Herbalism kit? Can't think of a good extra language. And, I suppose he could play an instrument...
Can we swap starting equipment, like warhammer for longsword?

It could be a big deal. This whole campaign is about the "Peace Treaty" between the Titans, and their forces, vs. the (5) Gods, and their forces (Dragonlords). The players will be forced to choose sides. Most will choose the Five Gods as that is where there Heroic Path originates. Since the Gods do interfere directly with the players, Sydon would probably cut off your access to divine might if you opposed him directly. Struggling to figure out how that could work.
There are some Lost Gods that died during the first Gods-Titans war, but at this time they don't have a domain. You might choose one of the (5) Gods now, and there are ways through the campaign to begin the ascension to godhood yourself. If you can come up with a way to work with the others, and keep Sydon happy then go for it.
Another option would be to start out as a Sydon worshiper, then as the game progresses change allegiances.
I don't have a problem with switching out the proficiency, as long as they can be justified with background... and weapons the same. The 5E standard backgrounds weren't designed with this type of setting in mind, so as long as it makes sense I'm good with it.

The source material says this, "Centaur legends claim that they are the offspring of a powerful god of war that came down to the mortal plane in the form of a stallion. They are proud of this divine heritage and demand that the proper respect be shown to them."
What if the source of his power comes from this god of war? Maybe it was Ixion the founder of his line and kingdom that I made up. What if he carries a holy symbol of this god as a family heirloom, but doesn't know it's a holy symbol, while also carrying the mark of Sydon on his shield. And he and everyone assumes his power comes from Sydon until the titan tries to cut him off OR doesn't even recognize him as a follower.

Meh I'll go ahead and submit this rogue since its the one I keep coming back to and know its something I can stick with (Id probably get bored with wild mage after a few levels). 2 rogues might be fun since we have a shared secret language and different specialties. Mateo and Odyssean seem more like light soldiers while Novyn is a traditional thief.

How about this. You worship Chiron who was the son of Sydon, and one of the missing gods. In reality, Chiron is just a mask of Pythor... whom doesn't really pay much attention to the fact that he's not being worshiped directly???

Chiron works for me, and I like the Masks concept, too. You're still good with Tempest for him?

After re-reading the Cursed One stuff, slight change from curse story from before...supposed to be a titan curse not one of the 5 gods.
With that change and a little character exploration I think I'm ready for checkout.
Long ago, before the appearance of the Five Gods, there was a great betrayal. A betrayal of love, a betrayal of loyalty...one so perverse in nature it had the power to alter the lineage of all who came after.
Neofytos was a pewter smith when the First War began, comfortable in Estoria with his trade -- talented even...but lonely. He had apprenticed here at a young age, leaving his family far behind in Mytos...and it happened that his toil left him friendless and inexperienced with the fairer sex.
That changed with Niki.
The two fell in love instantly and couldn't be separated both physically and emotionally. Neofytos had cast a special ring in the shape of a figure 8, the symbol mathematical philosophers used for infinity. When they were together, one would slip their finger in the bottom loop, while the other nestled on top.
But one day the Gygan cyclopes sacked Estoria, stealing Niki and other Estorians away to a foul cavern in the Greater Steppes. Forces were bravely mobilized to rescue, among them the mighty shield-man Serafeim...
Serafeim returned months later wearing the ring...Niki returned with child.
Rage and confusion assailed Neofytos, boiling over into vengeful wrath. In his most desperate and lowly hour, a Gygan spy in the form of a siamese cat visited the smith, gifting him a magical chisel. Just one tap on Serafeim's shield, the trickster claimed, and the Gygan's club would sunder the man leading Estoria's defenses.
So it was Neofytos had his vengeance, at the cost of Estoria falling to the cyclopian horde. He lost his life without ever seeing Niki again. But Lutheria watched this play out with disdain. The titan cursed the soul of Neofytos and his lineage, to 'always remain ignorant of love, but experienced of betrayal'.
The babe survived, and unknown to the pewter smith, was his own blood...now branded with the mark of the curse: a chisel on the left arm, and an infinity symbol on the right. Wise women retold the story from time to time...and learned to fear the mark.
Over the years the line of Neofytos endured through lust, one bastard and one lustful mistake after the next. Never a child of love.
The slimy clay reflected in the moonlight looked like snakeskin, or so thought Novyn. She wasn't supposed to be here, harvesting these mud flats was a privilege reserved for Estoria's masons and metic artists. Freedmen like her were supposed to use sites farther down the river...that yielded much lesser ceramics when fired. If King Pythor's hoplites found her out here again, she faced a final banishment or even exile...would have to wander the Greater Steppes once more, living day to day for a mouthful of water.
She sloshed a fat lump off her shovel with a wet *plop*.
It didn't matter, she was cursed anyways. And she certainly had no love for Pythor, or love for justice...or love for anything for that matter. Such was the titan's curse upon her lineage to never feel that particular emotion...her empathy for laws and community were as a result primitive at best, non-existent in all honesty. But at the same time, it gave her a nose for danger...a heightened awareness of approaching betrayal.
"You there! Stop in the name of the King!" A heightened awareness...sometimes. The armored guard worked his way down to her dig quickly, torch in one hand and bronze in the other. "Put down that shovel!" In the guard's light he saw a dark-skinned woman in her early 20s, a laborer by the simple garb she wore...but a curious tatoo of a smith's chisel marked her arm like a rotting leprosy, and she was in no way easy on the eyes.
For her part, Novyn saw the guard's leather boots. She held back a smirk, knowing from that one detail she had the advantage...she herself was barefoot, and the clay flats were not forgiving to footwear. Novyn scooped a spadeful of water out of the hole and launched it towards the man, he tried to get out of the way but his boots were already inches deep and stuck in the clay. His torch half-extinguish just as Novyn's thrown dagger found his eye.
The cheating potter wanted to leave quickly, but a silver ring on the guards finger caught her attention as she gathered the dagger. She would take it and do as she always did...bake it into her wares until it was forgotten, then smash it free and feed the Cult of the Snake. They had their quota, after all.
But that night, as the kiln's fire crackled in her small shop off the Agora, Novyn's thoughts were pulled in a direction quite removed from her own choosing. As she slumbered the heat would destroy her work, but so too would the Oracle's dream destroy life as she knew it...

Oh also for her standard background feature (Discovery) I was thinking she once found a Gygan ruin linked to her curse in someway. Took Survival to represent some time she may have been banished for crimes, wandering the Steppes...could have found it then maybe.
Exact text of the Feature is:
The quiet seclusion of your extended hermitage gave you access to a unique and powerful discovery. The exact nature of this revelation depends on the nature of your seclusion. It might be a great truth about the cosmos, the deities, the powerful beings of the outer planes, or the forces of nature. It could be a site that no one else has ever seen. You might have uncovered a fact that has long been forgotten, or unearthed some relic of the past that could rewrite history. It might be information that would be damaging to the people who or consigned you to exile, and hence the reason for your return to society.
Work with your DM to determine the details of your discovery and its impact on the campaign.
If there's something other than a Gygan ruin you can think of that fits in with the main plot somehow I would much rather use that.
edit: ....aaaaaaand, if we are choosing Epic Path artifcats now:
lesser: Gem of Brightness
greater: Belt of Fire Giant Strength + Fire Resistance

Mateo Nikas |

Thank you for the invitation! I am super excited to be a part of this game!
@Novyn - Double rogues are perfectly fine! You're definitely correct that the Odysseans are more lightly-armored soldiers and are officially trained, so having an actual thief in the group will be great. We'll definitely have a lot of time to show the power of two rogues working together. :)
I'll be correcting the background so I haven't met the Oracle quite yet. I think everything else, equipment and character sheet wise, is good to go.

I switched from Tempest to War cleric. Replaced a music instrument & language with Healer's kit & Herbalist kit. Not that he has either to start. Usually when you learn to fight, you learn to do first aid.
Need a good symbol for Chiron. Suggestions welcome.

Hi Guys. Looks like this is going to be a fun group!
I'll get the game started in earnest this weekend, but feel free to RP among yourselves until your "Mr Johnson" makes their appearance.
One other favor. I'd like each of you to make up three rumors about your character, that might be circulating in Thylea. Please send me these rumors via the Private messaging section of this website, along with whether they are true or not.
On a second question, I'm not the king of linking images etc. Is there a forum or something you guys would like to use to share files, private messages, images etc.? I've got a subscription to World Anvil, but haven't really used it for this kind of thing. I'll look, to see... or we can just use the Private message board here, and I can email the handouts and pictures.

Chiron works for me, and I like the Masks concept, too. You're still good with Tempest for him?

I'm fine with Tempest if that's what you want to use. Also, since we haven't really determined who your gods mother is, most any domains would be open for discussion.

Oh good. There are lots of secrets available here. I'll finish reading the whole campaign hopefully this weekend, and supply you with a discovery. There are some I'm thinking about now, but I want to make sure that whatever I reveal isn't a game-breaker down the road. I'll give you a juicy secret soon, along with some suggestions on how you discovered it.

Supreme Being |

@Mateo-thanks man, was worried about stepping on someones toes.
@DM-Can I roll for gold? Was thinking I'd probably prefer to hand pick equipment. If so:
[dice=Gold]4d4 x10=110
Sure. Feel free to roll. I'm really not a stickler for starting equipment if it makes sense for your character, and is run by me first.

Chiron is a comet with a unique and erratic orbit. In the natal chart, Chiron is symbolized by the “wounded healer”. It represents our deepest wound, and our efforts to heal the wound. Chiron was named after the centaur in Greek mythology who was a healer and teacher who, ironically, could not heal himself.
Since this is the origin of Chiron in our real world, let's play off this path. How about an Eye (Like Sydon) with the tail of a comet? There is a symbol for Chiron in Astrology, but it's kind of lame.

Supreme Being |

A few random things.
- Please list all your important stats (See Mateo for example) in your heading so I don't have to open the profile for basic information.
- Make sure you have your Epic Path in your profile, with your chosen items listed below it.
- I typically travel a lot for work, so there will be times that my posting is less responsive. I'll try to let you guys know in advance so you don't think I've disappeared. So any information about your character or it's actions I don't have to look up somewhere is helpful.
I apologize for the formatting of this post. Something seems wonky with the List function today on the site.

Supreme Being |

Just a reminder to those who haven't yet. I need three rumors about your character, and whether they're true or not. If you could Private Message those to me, it would help me get the game posts up this weekend.

Supreme Being |

I've shared an image link in the campaign Info tab. Could someone try to open it, and see if it works. I put it on my OneNote page, and shared (Created a link to it), so hopefully there will be no issues. If not... back to the drawing board.

Supreme Being |

Great. I'll be able to add maps and handouts as needed. Once everybody has their rumors posted, I'll be ready to get the game started. Only two have posted them so far. This is a cool RP opportunity, so I really don't want to skip it.
@Lynsander>>> Haven't heard from you lately. Are you still in? Do you need help with the character?

Lysander of Mytros |

Actually, just finished him up today:) I should have some rumors for you tonight. I swapped out the crossbow/bolts in his kit for a more approprate sling/bullets. Hope that's okay

![]() |
I was waffling between sling and others as well, but then found the gastraphetes.
...and will get the 3 rumors by the end of today. :)

Mateo Nikas |

I just got my rumors out a few seconds ago; yesterday was an awful day for my headaches.

Coronus the centaur |

We might have to modify your story a bit. According to this Heroic Path you are the only person who even remembers anything about your family. And it should be you who's family has disappeared, not a distant relative. Part of the Haunted one is that you have experienced this loss personally. If you really want to stay with the "Lost family from the Past". I can make it work, but just wanted your character to feel the personal angst. Your background could still work... just the tribe you've been living with thinks you're a bit bonkers with this whole "Imaginary Tribe" that you claim you are from.
OK. I thought Aragorn whom I based the background had enough angst. However, if you think the essentialness of the Path is "personal loss and angst," I can work with that. I'm not enamored with "the tribe you've been living with thinks you're a bit bonkers with this whole "Imaginary Tribe" that you claim you are from." So, give me a little bit to rewrite his history, and I'll ping you to review.

Supreme Being |

@ Coronus>>
Great. Like I said we can go with your background, but unfortunately people still remember your old tribe... like they remembered Aragorns, so it's more an ancestral loss than a personal one. At the end of the day it's your character however so we'll find a way to make it work.

Mateo Nikas |

I have Mateo's background all edited and finished now, updated with the prequel stuff that you wrote @scranford. I decided on my trophy being a necklace of rank from the Aserian general that Mateo defeated during one of the many campaigns against them.

Now that we're pretty much moving forward I'd like to discuss a couple of Game-play options. All are up for discussion.
1. With 6-Players the already slow pace of PbP can slow to glacial levels. With approval, when the party has at least (4) agree on a course of action we'll go ahead and move forward.
2. Minimum of (1) Post every 24 hours. This may or may not include weekends. Right now it's not a problem, but I often have social activities on the weekends when life is normal. I'll at least try to get one post per weekend, but feel free to interface among yourselves.
3. If you'd like I'll allow you to make about (10) d20 rolls, and keep them in your profile. That way if I have to DMPC your character it will at least be your rolls. This is optional. If you want I'll just roll for you.
4. for combat I'm a fan of group initiative... ie... Group 1, Bad guys, Group 2. Much faster method for PbP.
5. For HP at new levels you have two options. One take average per PHB. The other that I use in real life is that you roll HP with advantage. In other words you roll (2) HD and take the highest. 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 Roll 1, 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 Roll 2.
6. I also allow healing spells to roll with advantage in a similar manner. Not potions, not wands, not other methods of healing, just PC based healing rolls.
6. As I mentioned earlier these are up for discussion. If you have any further questions, or suggestions, please feel free to post here.

Coronus the centaur |

1. Agreed. Momentum is super important
2. Agreed. I’m more active on the weekend, because my job can randomly consume my weekdays. If I know that I’m out for more than a day, I’ll give a heads up. Fortunately COVID has killed my traveling schedule, so I shouldn’t be gone much. Always, I prefer you bot me to keep things moving. See point 1.
3. I prefer you to roll for my character when you need to. The random number generator should be completely independent.
4. Agreed. Group initiative is the way to go.
5. I’m risk averse rolling HP. Your method looks promising. I’ll probably do the probability distribution of your method before I abandon the sure thing.
6. Cool! My home group rerolls all 1’s. But advantage is much more 5e.
Cheers

Speaking of probabilities the expected value for n-sided dice rolled twice and maximum of two kept is:
[(n+1)(4n-1)]/6n
For a d20, that means a change from 10.5 to 13.82 (disadvantage swings it the same the other way). Other dice are:
d4: 3.17 instead of 2.5
d6: 4.47 instead of 3.5
d8: 5.81 instead of 4.5
d10: 7.15 instead of 5.5
d12: 8.49 instead of 6.5
