Seeing the campsite ahead, and not sensing anything is amiss, Caliban turns to Greta and calls back to the rest of the survivors. There is an old campsite here, Greta and I will investigate and see if there is anything of use to our survival.

Addressing Greta directly, I will advance in and check it, you stay behind me so you can cover me with that massive hammer?

Drawing his longsword again, the elf advances into the camp area, searching for anything of use.

Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19

Yeah no way I can make that DC 26 perception! Wow!

Wow, this really went on overnight...

Massielo listens to everything silently. He make a mental note to talk to Greta about Horgus later. As they come to the campsite, he says "Seems like someone is, or was, living down here." He checks the bones to see whether they're human.

Heal: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

I'm not even gonna roll that Perception check.

Benedic follows, seemingly oblivious to the joke at his expense.

As the party examines the campsite, he says "Others have been here, so it is likely there was a way out at one time. Tell me, Anevia, what waits for you on the surface? Have you lived in Kenabres long?"

Greta allows Caliban to step in front of her, then follows along close behind. She keeps her hammer raised, ready to bring it down on anything that might attack the elf.

I also can’t make that DC.

Before Anevia can answer Benedic, the debris behind the campsite erupts as six large-dog sized insects filter out and skitter toward the group. Their wide, sharp mandibles lead the way.

Somewhat startled by Selann's exclamation and the crossbow bolt flying past, Caliban brings up his left hand and mutters a brief incantation. Frost crystallizes around his hand and then flies in the direction of the nearest bug.

Ray of Frost: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14

Now settled, he follows the bolt of frost with his eyes, seeing it impact on the advancing vermin. He spins his longsword in his right hand, before settling into a two handed grip with the blade low before him. To Greta he says,

Oh I thought we were up, my bad. Apologies

Selann aims his crossbow in expectation of the coming threat. As the first one rears its head, he fires his crossbow and the bolt punctures its abdomen right below its sharp, saliva-dripping mandibles. It lets out a shriek but does not stop its advancement.

Purple 6 damage. Crit not confirmed.

An insect jumps to the air and takes a wobbly arched flight toward Massielo and reaches out at him with its filth covered mandibles.

Mandible Bite (red) at Massielo: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 51d4 ⇒ 2

If Massielo has his longspear out, he can take an AoO against red

Caliban, being the closest, takes the brunt of the swarm as three charge at him, mandibles clicking.

Mandible Bite (blue) at Caliban: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 131d4 ⇒ 3

Following the swarm, the crossbow injured insect charges Greta.

Mandible Bite (purple) at Greta: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 81d4 ⇒ 1

Greta can take an AoO at purple

The final insect scuttles up to Benedic its mandibles opening and closing voraciously.

@Selann: It probably doesn't matter in your post, but it might in future ones: Since the bug are engaged in melee, you need to take a -4 penalty on the attack since you don't have the Precise Shot feat. And if the GM is feeling particularly strict, you need to take another -4 due to cover from someone standing between you and the creature. Improved Precise Shot would remove that cover bonus. But anyway, a 14 would probably still hit a touch AC.

Benedic turns to see the bugs charging. "Large vermin! Stay back, stay back! Behind me, behind me!" he repeats for the benefit of the injured party members. He draws his longsword and swings it at the nearest insect.

Seeing the assualts of his party upon the advancing bugs, and keenly aware of the threats presented to him being in front of the party, Caliban pivots, and brings his longsword down in a two handed chop on the bug threatening Masselio directly.

Junior starts to get into the swing of things as the fight rages on. He pulls out a longspear tipped with cold forged iron. He slams the haft of the spear against a drum that pokes out of his backpack in a uneven but still catchy beat that goes something like this. He comments, "Giant cockroaches, they don't like the light, but its gotta be real bright!" Light sensitivity

If Junior (or anyone) turns to look at Tristan; he sees the youth dancing while hitting a cymbal.
Hey; it just felt right!

Selann, watching the creature he just shot charge up to Greta, mutters arcane sounds and launches acid at the creature. The creature’s exo-skeleton burns and sizzles, but it continues to move.

Benedic draws his sword and positions himself to protect the injured. Benedic’s swing connects and pieces of insect fly into the cave while the slashing wound offers a spurting milky-white fluid.

Greta reaches out with her father’s great warhammer and smashes down on her target. The creature turns to smoosh where the weapon hits. The creature’s legs fidget about, but its mandibles stop clicking as its head falls to the ground.

Caliban defends his position against the onslaught of mandibles directed his way. In his periphery, he eyes the insect attacking Massielo. The Elf pivots his stance and allows his sword to lead in a mighty overhead chop. The blade cuts the insect in half, sending bits of insect everywhere and spilling a sticky, white liquid on the cavern floor.

In the background, a rhythmic drumming cadence starts to echo throughout the cavern. The music seems to bond to you and fills you with strength.

Aravashnial mutters through deep gasps of air, ”Point me in the right direction. I will remove these vermin.” To his frustration, Anevia works on leading him away from the insects.

The insects then continue there assault, determined to make you dinner. While Caliban and Greta are able to fend off the insects, Benedic feels the sharp pain of mandibles gorge into him. The young cleric is able fend off the beast before it latches on.

Caliban continues his movement to his left, spinning into the next opponent on the left flank, conjuring frost to his left hand with a quick word, and unleashing both spell and sword against the giant insect. He almost falls into the rhythm of Junior's beat, but shakes his head as he spins, clearing his mind for casting.

Concentration: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 3 + 2 = 19

Managing to avoid provoking the insect, he fires frost from his left hand, and attempts to land a moulinette upon the back carapace of the threatening monster.

Spell combat Ray of Frost: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Melee Attack: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (7) + 0 = 7

Missing wildly with his spin, Caliban settles in front of the giant cockroach, prepared to receive the worst it can do...

Decline raging song for casting, movement is a 5 foot step and shouldn't provoke AAO.

Junior continues to bang on his drum but now thrusts his spear over Benedic's shoulder.

Caliban does a flashy spell and sword display, but sometimes effort does not always reap reward.

Junior measures his spear over Benedic's shoulder and pushes it forth right down the throat of the insect. It lets out a shriek before falling dead.

Frustrated that his magic hasn't had much of an effect, Selann still tries one more time.

acid splash: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 - 4 = 17 Ranged touch attack. Is there also a negative for firing through the melee? I thought that was part of the -4. ?? Targeting the same one again.
damage if that hits: 1d3 ⇒ 3

Just read the ruling. So another -4 to hit for soft cover. I should have moved to get around to flanking position.... So does a 13 hit touch AC?
Was that the purple one that Junior killed? If so, then my attack didn't matter.... :)

@Caliban: You actually provoke AoO for shooting your Ray of Frost in melee range. On top of that, you have -4 for shooting into melee. I would suggest attack with two hands while you're still not level 2. Better damage.

Gotcha! thanks good to know

I considered Caliban's Concentration check as part of casting defensively; therefore, the cockroach will not take an AoO. Not sure if this is right, but it sounds good.

Selann's magic manifests another glob of acid and he sends it directly into the face of the injured insect. The Mandibles and mouth parts begin to sizzle and pop. Greta gets an eye-level view of the creature melting in front of her. It lets out a final screech and slumps to the ground, its head turning liquid and seeping into the cracks in the cavern floor.

The soft voices of Anevia and Aravashnial can be heard deeper in the cavern. Then an arrow comes out from the shadowy darkness, followed by a burst of light. The light dissipates quickly and out from the shadows appears a large golden dog. The arrow flies overhead while the canine runs directly toward the insect, grabs it in its powerful jaws, and bites off a chunk. The creature roars, turns its attention on the new attacker, and slices the dog with its mandibles. The dog lets out a yelp, but is still alive.

Arrow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 81d6 ⇒ 6

Celestial Dog Bite: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 211d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Tristan moves to a tactical position to fight the last insect, but his sword fails to pierce through the creature's hard exoskeleton.

Tristan Spellcraft DC 11:
Before the Celestial Dog appeared, Tristan recognized Arivashnial's arcanum as a summoning spell.

Anyone own this Celestial dog?

He didn't provoke from casting because of the concentration check. He provoked from using a ranged attack while being threatened. If he didn't cast defensively he would have provoked twice.

I'm pretty sure that is almost right. When you cast defensively you never provoke, but if you fail the concentration check you just lose the spell (like I did).

Massielo seeing that the group was being very capable of handling the bugs, he decided to save his spellcasting powers and attack with his longspear. He stepped to stand behind Caliban and stabbed the remaining creature, accepting the rage induced by Junior's song.
