Though Ukh only manages to splash the tree, his fire bomb does a disproportionate amount of damage. The tree creaks in a rage and smolders. Garad's attack goes wide, but sizzles harmlessly on the street.

Easy fix. We could start anywhere in the yellow box, He can stand next to Marra and go after Yellow instead. Or just start 5ft NW of his current location and attack red. Though it would be through cover.

We'll go with option B, just to keep things easy. Thanks for filling in the slide!

Aehronim roasts the red tree. It topples over just in front of Yergi.

The yellow tree roars as it tears across the square. It's completely ignoring Tor and heads for Uhk and Aehronim.

Frozen Flame + Dragon's Demand

The splash of fire from the goblin's bomb is enough to destroy the tree, which topples to the ground in a cloud of sparks and cinders.

Out of Combat

Cautiously, the townfolk come back to the square, exclaiming in shock at the sight of the tree monsters.

A middle-aged woman comes forward and talks to you. "Oh, thank you! What would we have done if you weren't here? The forest is a dangerous place, and often frightening, but it does not usually come into our town. Please, take these festival gifts as thanks."

The woman presents a lacquer case with three vials of holy water.

The attitude of the town is a bit infectious, and the shadows beneath the trees seem a little malevolent.

The qualms of the town make you a little skittish. In any combat encounters, you'll need to make a DC 5 flat check or start the combat at frightened 1. (I'll do those rolls for you if and when combat breaks out.)

The woman then asks, "Will you head out now? I'm afraid what will happen to the village if someone doesn't investigate this disturbance."

The goblin is looking for an explanation.

Perhaps these disturbances are coming from something special happening right now. And perhaps it is tied to the reason why we're here and the fact the wagon we are looking for takes a wrong path. We should find it.

Frozen Flame + Dragon's Demand

The woman considers. "Such a thing has never happened here before, and the trees did come from the same direction your caravan headed."

Frozen Flame + Dragon's Demand

"They look like firewood to me, ma'am"

The track into the forest is clear, though you do not see signs of the caravan's at the very entrance to it.

It appears that, with the snow falling on the path of late, it will be a difficult route to traverse in your wagon. (Taking the wagon will slow you to a speed of 10 feet.) The villagers offer to watch your wagon for you if you'd like to proceed at your normal traveling speed.

If we have decisions like this, I'll use the Rule of Two, which is common in PBP: The first course of action that two people agree to will be followed. This keeps the game moving along.

Verdant Wheel

Champion of Gozreh (Redeemer) 2 - HP 34/34, AC 20 (22 w shield) - Perception +7 - F: +8 / R: +4* / W: +9 - Speed: 20

Frozen Flame + Dragon's Demand

Following the villagers’ directions, you travel the Spirit Road toward the east, taking the same path that the caravan traveled before you. Along the journey, the road branches off several times, typically only for a short distance before rejoining the main road or reaching a dead
end. The seemingly endless rows of conifer trees create a serene yet monotonous backdrop.

While weather has obscured the trail, you soon see obvious signs that the caravan before them ran into similar difficulties, such as an abandoned wheel along the side of the path and damaged branches. Occasional flurries of snow fall from trees the above as breezes shake their branches.

As the snow lightly falls on the trail ahead, you see the outline of a humanoid figure picked out in the snowflakes. It fairly glows and stands on the trailway.

The figure looks at the party for a moment, then moves slowly toward you in a nonthreatening fashion, hovering just above the ground.

GM Screen:

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

Uhk, Marra, Anton:
The figure is most likely a forest kami. the spirit needs a host to interact with the living world, and probably wants to possess one of the party in order to share its experience; these types of spirits are not strong enough to take control of a body they possess, but they may influence their host’s thinking and behavior
by superimposing their own consciousness.

Verdant Wheel

Champion of Gozreh (Redeemer) 2 - HP 34/34, AC 20 (22 w shield) - Perception +7 - F: +8 / R: +4* / W: +9 - Speed: 20

"A Kami. It wants to temporarily possess one of us, To share memories. The effect is harmless."

Aehronim nods, then begins with a laugh,”Well, you can let it try with me...I mean worst case scenario one of you lot knocks me out?”

Frozen Flame + Dragon's Demand

The humanoid form skips toward the group and up to Aehronim before throwing its arms around him and disappearing.

Aehronim:
You see flashes of memory as a caravan is beset by moving statues. They push the wagons and chasing the members of the caravan-—all the while the caravan is harried by a humanoid thief that appears to have a fox’s head and tail.
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
You recognize the creature as a kitsune, a race of crafty shape-changing humanoids common throughout Tian Xia, including the Forest of Spirits. The spirit observed the kitsune infiltrate one of the wagons while the guards were distracted repelling the attack, and then sneak away holding a sack of clanging valuables.
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11

In the vision, the spirit moves to study the statues--it seems interested in their construction. But just as the spirit seems to understand the statues, its blindsided by a wild animal, and the vision ends.
For the reminder of the adventure: You gain a +2 bonus to Lore checks and checks to Recall Knowledge, but you also gain Weakness 2
against natural attacks.

With the guidance of the spirit, you are able to pick up your pace. Before too long, you come across fresher signs of the caravan: deep rutted wagon tracks in the snow. The wagon's signs are confusing, however. The seem to follow a side path, just to double back, or circle around themselves when you pass through a large clearing.

Just as you come to a place where the track becomes a bit more obscure, you notice that the some roadside bushes have formed themselves into a small humanoid form. Leaves from the bushes rustle and blow into the trail, suspended in their own little whirlwind.

Looks like another spirit.

Your trip from here seems charmed: Brush moves aside to reveal wagon tracks, lost scraps of fabric on trees flutter in an unseen wind, and your way is generally clear to the caravan.

Before too long, you stumble upon a caravan of three wagons. A short, heavyset Tian man with a round, cleanshaven face sits on the bench of the lead wagon. Next to him, is an athletic woman with broad shoulders and a stern demeanor.

"Ah, I told you, Ti Lan, that we'd find those lost Pathfinders eventually!" The woman gives a wry smile.

"Ah, Li Po and I were field commissioned by Mistress Amara Li. We have been traveling around the world to retrieve artifacts originally from Tian Xia. Unfortunately, one of those artifacts has given us a bit of trouble! In fact, we feared we would be trapped in the forest forever!"

"You see, one of the artifacts we retrieved this time was a magical bonsai tree. Just before we reached the village of Suboyashi, we started receiving a message from a kami--it was trapped within the relic! The message was vague, but we think it was afraid that some sort of nefarious force in the forest would try to capture it. We had a strong sense that the kami’s ward was close by, and we convinced the caravan to take a minor detour to assist a spirit in need."

Li Po takes over the story from there, "Unfortunately, the detour ended up being far longer than we expected! As we were dealing with some guardians of the forest, a thief stole the relic! Since then, we have been following trails left by the spirits in hopes of finding their way back to the spirit road!

Ti Lan concludes, "We have glimpsed the thief in the distance several times, still carrying our bag, but they we never managed to catch up with him. We think that the spirits are trying to lead us to the thief."
