Shadow of the Vault Lord || Extinction Curse

"Ah, Abber is a good friend. I have a few heal spells remaining today. Please, let me thank you for your help."

He calls on the power of Gozreh several times and heals your wounds.

[b]"You've met Nemmia, then? Has she come to her senses or is she still under Balenni's influence? Goz, I wish I had taken it all more seriously to start with. I'm still not sure exactly how Balenni got everyone on her side. Imagine, converting so many Gozrehns to demon worship. It breaks my heart.

How many are left, still? How many have you fought?" As you list off battles, he does some internal accounting. "That's all but Carlessa, I think. She's probably in the animal pens. I think she's the one responsible for corrupting the poor animals, like those lizards you saw here."

Harlock sighs wearily. “I suppose I should start at the beginning. The Hermitage of Blessed Lightning was established here to protect and learn from the Erran Tower, an ancient landmark a few miles inland. You might have spotted it on your journey here. We hermits know very little about it. It was created by Aroden thousands of years ago. At its summit is what we call the aeon orb, so named because it orbits the summit of the tower the way an aeon stone orbits the head of its owner.

“Lore passed down to me from previous masters of the hermitage suggests more. The aeon orb is a powerful artifact. It enriches life for dozens of miles in all directions, making the land more abundant, the seasons milder, and harvests more bountiful. In just the past few generations, however, this bounty has faded. The soil is drying out. Vegetation is stunted, and some crops won’t grow at all. Birth rates among animals are declining. Some here at the hermitage, including Nemmia, blamed the townspeople of Abberton for this decline, but I suspect a different cause: I think the aeon orb’s power has begun to fail. The Isle of Erran is dying.

“I’ve tried to the understand the aeon orb and perhaps restore its power, but its nature eludes me. While I’ve made a few trips into the Erran Tower over the years, nothing there provided any clues. On my most recent visit, just a few weeks ago, some foul-smelling creatures hurled spears at me before I could get close. They are xulgaths, I believe—reptilian humanoids you might have heard called troglodytes. I spied on them from a distance. There are at least a dozen, and they are accompanied by large lizards and several demons. It was an unpleasant surprise, but I soon had my hands full dealing with the newcomer Balenni and the resentment she stoked among the hermits and didn’t have a chance to investigate further. It seems obvious in hindsight, but the sudden rise of demon worship here must be connected to the demons accompanying the xulgaths in the Erran Tower. I overheard a few of the most debased priests say they’d planned to visit the Erran Tower and speak to someone named Cavnakash. I believe Cavnakash is the leader of the xulgaths, and he must have some power over demons."

Whoops, I got Nemmia and Balenni confused. Sorry!

Rova nods sagely as Harlock explains the fading of the orb's power and the other problems. It's just what she knew would always happen. Maybe the orb was forestalling it for a bit, though? If so, maybe they could keep forestalling it -- obviously not forever, because, duh, Groetus, obviously, but perhaps for a little while.

And demons were maybe part of The End, but not a specially nice part, especially if they're corrupting animals. She wasn't going to let that happen to Thkrull!

"Maybe we should go stop this Carlessa, but then we can check the tower. Maybe after we can rest a little? Do you have anything that might help us fight demons?" she asks. Would love some cold iron ammunition, or a filcher's fork.

"And do you know anything else about these xulgaths?"

"Maybe the demons are corrupting the orb." Prism tries to lay out the obvious as she skips forward to introduce herself with a small twirl. She offers a small wave at the end. Mukluk glares at Prism.

"I can't understand a word she says. I think she wants to plunder your feet or sumthin'," Mukluk complains. "She's bright enough, but that's just how she is. I dunno." Mukluk flexes his newly healed limbs, checking for anything that was missed.

"You spin a fine tale about them orbs and towers and such. Maybe you'll be rallying your priests and holy warriors, callin' in reinforcements from Absalom and such to deal with the problem, will you?"

Shadow of the Vault Lord || Extinction Curse

To Rova, "The tower is some distance from here, perhaps a few hours' journey, and it is late. If you are willing to investigate it, you can certainly rest here first. Please, use the nice bedrooms! I certainly can't imagine more important guests than you right now. As for items..." He picks up a staff that was leaning against the storm elemental statue. "This is an animal staff. Perhaps it would help? Also, this pin on top is a monkey pin. It comes off, see? Hmmmm. There's a vial of silversheen too, although I suppose that's devils, not demons? Well, take it anyway, it never hurts to be safe. If you found anything else here that might be of use, please, feel free to take it."

To Prism, "I am afraid you may be right. I don't know to what end, but it can't be good."

To Mukluk, "I lost all of my priests to demon worship here. Those who resisted were killed by those who gave in. I can try, but I do not know for certain if the priests in Absalom will listen, or how long it will take them to act. But of course, that is my concern, not yours. I am grateful for the rescue, and I am already in your debt."

Niksi offers her hand to Harlock. "Thank you so much for all your help. Thank you for resisting the evil that took hold here. You doing so has made it possible for us meet you and use the valuable information you have to try to help more people than we could have otherwise. You may not have saved your priests, but you will help save untold others."

”What kind of more trouble are you getting us into?” he asks gruffly. ”Demons? Orbs? Why not let the Gozrens handle this? Or the, uh, Sheriff?” Mukluk rubs his bald head as he remembers that the Sheriff was dead.

”Maybe we should talk about this in the morning. I’m tired and broken. And this ain’t right. Nothing of it is right. I want to go see Moose, my mule, that’s what I want to do.”

The nice bedrooms are intended for special guests, and they have very comfortable beds and private bathtubs. The accommodations are probably the nicest that you've had in a while.

The next morning, Harlock makes breakfast. It's a porridge that looks very plain, but is surprisingly tasty, with a delicate blend of spices.

How far away is the circus? Mukluk might have headed ‘home’ to see how Moose was and the rest of the injured folk and to report in. Not that he doesn’t appreciate the offer of sleep and breakfast, but someone has to take care of Moose, and make sure the BOOMBOOM is okay.

"We probably should," Rova says. "We talked about that as a possibility growing up, and everyone agreed it would be one of the worst Ends. Demons are bad. Way worse than Rovagug, who would just End everything really quickly. Demons want to hurt people!"

That said, I'm also curious how far town is. I wouldn't mind seeing if we can get some cold iron, depending on how our loot is looking. Or maybe a striking rune...

F Cavern Elf Bard (maestro)/9 Hero Points: 3

Niksi slept remarkably well, though more out of exhaustion than any feeling of ease. She does not partake of the meal yet, preferring to keep up her "living mannequin" performance and eat later, privately.

"Up until now, we have been mainly continuing out of a personal drive to resolve this whole mess that ended with the death of Thunder, our ringmaster. We are not fighters by trade or inclination, but we have yet proceeded as such in the pursuit of justice and closure. I do think it a fair question for us to ask ourselves: 'How far shall we take this? When have we done all that could be expected of us?'"

"Speaking for myself, I have come to the following conclusions:

1. I dislike leaving a job unfinished.
2. I dislike death and destruction, particularly when done to the innocent.
3. I have lived a particularly self-indulgent life, even if I try to do the best by my comrades. I am curious what a more expansively altruistic turn might offer.
4. I can practice my art against demons and other villains quite effectively and without reservation, as whatever I would do is something they would most certainly deserve.
5. I am curious about the mystery and want to know more.

As all of those add up to a resounding 'yes,' you know my stance."

"With all of that said, I know that our dear Mukluk has reservations about any path that will involve more fighting, and I have promised to do my best to respect his position, particularly since his skills place him in the most direct danger. In fact, of anyone in our little band, I am the least like to be in physical danger during any conflict. Thus, as much as I wish to give an emphatic 'yes' to this charge, I think it only fair for me to weigh the opinions of my comrades more highly than mine."

Shadow of the Vault Lord || Extinction Curse

Nothing is more than a few miles from anything else, so you can totally go back to the circus first before you go to the tower.

You can even give the priest of Abadar back his books, which I know you're all anxious to do. :P

"Maybe we should go back to town and make sure everyone knows what's going on," Rova says, "and get supplies. And bring Father Nellyn his books back."

She tries to think if she knows anything about xulgaths like that they smell and we might want to see if there's any way we can counteract that. Then, with a start, she searches the bodies of the two demonologist; maybe they'd have something useful? Plus we forgot to loot them yet, I think.

"Some logistical errands do sound like a good idea before we continue."

Shadow of the Vault Lord || Extinction Curse

Niksi knows a bit more about xulgaths.

Reptilian humanoids who live in the uppermost reaches of the Darklands, xulgaths (known as troglodytes to many surface-dwelling folk) often attack intruders in their territory on sight. They live in simple familial communities, battling rival groups and other aggressive Darklands inhabitants in order to survive. They occasionally raid surface settlements, usually at the behest of cruel, bloodthirsty leaders who are often themselves in the thrall of more powerful creatures like nagas or demons. A typical xulgath has dull gray, dark gray, or ashen scales, with a long tail and bony protrusions that run the length of its spine.

Although today the xulgaths are brutal and scattered, they were one of the first intelligent humanoids to rise in the primeval world, once ruling over a mighty empire that stretched throughout the Darklands. Today, all that remains of this era are ruins of massive stone ziggurats and crumbling cities found within some of the larger caverns. Some groups of xulgaths continue to live among these ruins, venerating their ancestors’ accomplishments, while others consider these areas taboo and leave them to become infested with Darklands vermin. Sages don’t agree on why the ancient xulgath civilization fell. Some suspect it was the result of a loss of several wars waged against serpentfolk, while others suggest that the corruptive influence of demon worship rotted their culture from within.

Certainly, many xulgath settlements continue to worship demons to this day, paying homage and offering live sacrifices to terrible creatures from the Abyss. Occasionally, a xulgath shaman can call forth and bind a lesser demon to help serve the group, but a shaman who delves too deep into occultism might summon a more powerful fiend that either tears the xulgaths to pieces or enslaves them.

They also smell very bad.

"They smell bad?" Mukluk sniffs the air, checking to see what it smells like now, as if he could catch whiff of the xulgaths on the wind. "Can't be worse than what I smell coming out of Thkrull after he got into the asparagus roots. Or Moose. He can get pretty rank too. But he also likes baths. Haw haw!" Mukluk doesn't like to take baths and can't remember the last time he did.

After visiting Moose, his mule, and checking in with the circus to report on things, Mukluk will shop for gear. He is happy to lend gold to Niski and accept Rova's old med kit.

His newly magic'd pick hangs at his belt. He has most of his camping/outdoor supplies in his pack. He wishes he could have brought Moose, but really, he's better off with the circus. No telling what trouble the party will be getting into.

F Cavern Elf Bard (maestro)/9 Hero Points: 3

It's little surprise that Niksi of all people would know something of xulgaths, considering the many years she had spend living in the upper reaches of the Darklands. In fact, most of what she has heard about them she learned from a xulgath member of her former circus, a quiet woman who did feats of strength and dexterity with her four arms, the result of mutation. She went by "Quattro," but it was not her name. It took years for Niksi just to get as much as she did out of her, and even then, she left out the details of her personal life. Whatever drove her away from her home was probably not that different from why anyone else ran off to join the circus, so Niksi never pressed. Quattro herself never smelled. People were always surprised when she didn't.

Niksi shares the information she knows as best she can. It certainly brings a sad pall to her to think of having to fight xulgath with the memory of her friend still in her mind, but that is what it is. She takes the offered loan from Mukluk graciously. "Thank you for the gold, Mukluk. Your investment shall bear fruit at the soonest opportunity."

Shadow of the Vault Lord || Extinction Curse

Harlock gave you directions to the Tower. It’s about 15 miles to the southwest of the Hermitage of Blessed Lightning, on a route through rolling grassland. The 200-foot-tall tower is visible during most of the trip, making it nearly impossible to get lost while headed there. He told you the tower’s entrance 40 feet up on its western side. When he was last there, the rooms all seemed empty and abandoned. He knows of a secret door to a vault opposite the staircase on the ground floor.

He also told you that the floors were suspiciously clean and that an ooze might be present.

The journey takes about half a day from Abberton. Is anyone going to try to Track as their exploration mode activity?

Mukluk isn't really a great tracker, but he did make it from the gladiator pits to the Inner Sea with Moose, his mule, all by himself and has picked up enough to track a bit. He'll gladly allow someone else more qualified to do the tracking, but otherwise he's happy to do so if others are more alert for overt dangers while he's looking for danger signs or sniffing poop for freshness (nothing to do with tracking).

Do you want rolls? Or do you roll? Survival mod is +8.

"So I says to Moose, I says, 'If we can't make it in the circus, then we're not going to make it anywhere,' I said to him. I tol' him that and he agreeed, he did. That's on our way down here to this Isle. And then we found the circus..."

Mukluk watches the ground carefully as you go, and suddenly, he spots tracks! Xulgaths, five of them. And it looks like they were dragging something big. It looks like they mostly stick to scrub and sneaking behind brush to avoid leaving tracks, but whatever they're dragging made that harder.

I'll pause for a moment in case this affects how you approach, and then move you along.

Nothing fancy, sadly, but you are immune for a minute!

Rova's first arrow goes wide out of her concern for Thkrull. Her second finds its mark, just barely.

@GM Kate Thkrull only took 5 because of inspire defense
@Mukluk Are those +1’s to attack and damage supposed to be from inspire courage? Niksi is doing inspire defense

Niksi continues empowering her allies’ defenses as she attacks another xulgath’s mind. Daze vs Purple again for 4 more damage. I think it’s will DC 20 for the basic will save

Poop. -1 from all the things. :(

Mukluk feels more defended and less inspired as he notes a different note in Niksi’s song.

F Cavern Elf Bard (maestro)/9 Hero Points: 3

It’s a +1 to AC and saves AND gives you physical resistance 2 (which will go up as we level) so hopefully people won’t drop as easily!
