Boom! Unless I'm mistaken, that will also hit the forward quandrant, where there is currently no shield.

Balnek's shot flies out This would be a gunnery check, but you'd hit either way with that roll and burns into the whale's forward quadrant, leaving it scored with a dark line. The beast seems to roar, though no sound travels through the intervening space. It turns to refocus on this new opponent.

Okay, round 1 down. Back to Engineering phase. Let me know what you'd like to do.

Engineering: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21

The whale divert's power to science equipment, which will give it a +2 for a science action in the helm phase.

Here's my piloting initiative check for the round
Piloting: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 8 + 2 = 30

@Eschade whatever role you choose for the round, you can go before me

Eschade consults the computer, finding comfort in technology that supersedes her own ancient processors...

Scan: 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 2 + 1 = 10

Eschade attempts to scan the creature, but to no avail. Apparently any further information from it is a bit tougher to ferret out.

Moving into the helm phase

The whale, not turned toward your ship, seems to perform some internal mechanics but can't adjust its shields. I messed that up...based upon the Whale's design, it does not have a science action at all, per the book. So, it can't rebalance its shields!

Piloting check: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22

The whale tries a bold maneuver, moving forward beside its opponent and attempting to flip at the end to target your aft quarters. It moves past, but is unable to turn at the end, since its piloting systems are glitching. It's aft is now to your ship, with no weapons to bear.

Attempting a flip and burn! Forgot that he has a -2 due to the critical damage threshold. DC16

Piloting check: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 10 - 2 = 9

Okay, it went past you, but is now facing to the SE. It has no apparent weapons on its aft, so you're assuming it can't fire upon you at all now. Your helm phase and gunnery phase, please!

Not that it matters, but Science Officer actions occur during Helm Phase

Reversing the port thrusters, Hamster brings the ship around at the whale's exposed backside.

Turn in Place stunt, no check required. Final facing will be East

In case it wasn't clear, Gunners are up. One +1 is still available.

Yup, agreed - I had it in the helm phase, but the Whale has no science officer action due to its design. It was going to balance shields and flip and burn in its helm phase, but could only do one of those.

Apologies. I missed that somehow.

Getting information from the targeting computer directly into their visual receptors, Lyrr swivels the turret around for another shot at the whale-ship.

Nice shot!

Targeting the whale's new course, Lyrr lets loose another missile, which flies unerringly towards its target. It impacts on the aft section, slamming through the shield there and loosing concussive force on the whale's hull.

That blasts through the shield there and hits two critical thresholds! That means that it now has glitching engines and a malfunctioning weapon. Up for round 3 - engineering!

At this point, I think scanning is moot. Science Officer still has some cool actions. For instance, you could make sure our guns damage the ship's weapons. Once they are disabled we could always just allow it to limp away. Your choice on what to do. No bad choices.

Eschade consults the computer again, trying to lock onto the whale’s ability to fire.

Target System: The DC equals 5 + 1–1/2 x the tier of the enemy starship + its bonus from defensive countermeasures. If you succeed, choose one system (core, engines, life support, sensors, or weapons). The next attack made by your starship that hits the enemy ship scores a critical hit on a natural roll of 19 or 20. If that attack deals critical damage, it affects the chosen system. For any further critical damage resulting from the attack, determine which system is affected randomly as normal.

Targeting weapons...

Computers: 1d20 ⇒ 3

The whale attempts to hold together its weapon system, through engineering it internally. However, it fails, nearly making the system worse. It's weapons system remains malfunctioning.

Engineering check DC16: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

Eschade attempts a targeting protocol, but the computer stonewalls her with a level of security that she had somehow missed.

Failure!

The whale bursts its glitching engines into motion.

Pilot check: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 10 - 2 = 26

Urian, you're up first! And, you can sure add a roll for Bal'nek if he can turn those guns, but he was on forward guns, and I think you're still facing N.

I’m getting confused - GM - you’re post of “Urian, you’re up first” seems to go against a Phase sequence of “Engineering/Helm/Gunnery”. Added to that, the Science Officer can choose to go before or after the Pilot in the Helm Phase....

Hang on...just maybe realised something. Do both vessels get to act at the same time in each Phase? So we and the whale do Engineering, then we and the whale do Helm and then we and the whale do Gunnery OR do we do Engineering/Helm/Gunnery and then the whale does Engineering/Helm/Gunnery? I’m reading the srd but still confused. I think we need a tacit Header in GM posts (and ours) highlighting what Phas it is...

This is it exactly. The only difference in the phases is that Pilot checks determine initiative during the Helm phase. The pilot with the lower number has to go first, which is a massive penalty

Both ship's engineers act during Engineering phase, then both team's pilots and science officers act during Helm phase, then both teams gunners act during Gunnery phase. Guns are fired silmultaneously. For instance, if we were to completely blow up the other ship by shooting "first", we could still take damage from their guns. Mutual destruction is possible.

Bal'nek's shot: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Damage: 2d4 ⇒ (4, 2) = 6

Bal'nek's show impacts upon the whale's aft section, where the shield is also depleted. It rips into the creature's hull, seeming to nearly disable the thing.

Still, the creature is able to turn itself to afford it an attack.

Turn in place to face you

After Hamster tries to hail the beast, he flips through a few frequencies, and on a few hears a mournful keening sound emitted from the creature. But, it has no intelligent reply to your hailing.

It seems to make a last ditch effort to engulf your ship in its flame. However, its malfunctioning systems are too much to ignore, and its breath weapon does not even project out.

Bal'nek's blast hits the whale hard, and some of the augmentations on the creature's head disintegrate into a cloud of molecular dust. The whale hangs in the blackness of space, disabled...and apparently quite dead.

A few seconds later, the engines of the fleeing ship flare out a final time, leaving it silent and adrift.

What could possibly turn a living creature into a space-faring vessel? Very interesting. I must look at it. The things that I could learn. Most interesting...." His vocal volume quickly decreases as his musing start to ramble.

This is stationmaster J.... You cut off the conversation, quite convincingly, then turn on to bigger and better things. The small light goes off for a minute as the stationmaster no doubt wonders if he lost the connection on his end. It then starts to blink anew and is summarily ignored.

Now that you're closer to the strange beast, you can get a closer look at its body.

DC20 engineering check:
You can see that, in addition to other systems, the fire whale was fitted with implants that look to connect internally - you'd assume within its neurophysiology. If those devices distintegrated, then they would have been lethal to the beast's internal organs.. You get the idea that these implants would let someone control the whale remotely.

As you get loser to the large ship you see that, even battered and blackened by the assault, the ship remains a work of art. Curves and spines of gleaming brass combine with dark plating to give the ship a feel that's half architectural and half insectile. Oblong domes are set in the top of the ship like eyes, opaque enough to hide their secrets. Along the bow is what looks like it should be a name, though it's in an odd language.

It appears to be easy enough to board, though you will have to dock with one of the aft airlocks. Since you're not under duress, you can take 20; normal DC is 17 However, you could also tow the ship back to the station, should you wish to use any of the scientists or their tools in order to enter the ship. If you go that route, it would be a few DC19 engineering and piloting checks to maneuver and tow the vessel.

Hamster guides the ship into place and the Horizon's Shadow docks with the airlock. After opening the door to it, you enter the small, wedge-shaped airlock of the odd ship. The overhead light panels herein flicker, but the indicators on the control panel glow a steady red.

You can see on the floor here there are some tiny chunks of some dark red onyx, like they fell off of something larger. Not a treasure, but these could be sold to someone who may be able to make jewelry from them.

DC15 perception:
You find a larger piece in the leftmost corner; it resembles the end of a bare foot, as if chipped from a small statue.

Lyrr looks at the controls to the airlock, but the words are in the same strange language that was on the side of the ship. His knowledge of engineering is enough to parse the design. It seems as if the red lights blinking are indicated that the system is fully operational or has finished a pressurization cycle. Were the lights blue, the cycle would still be in process. Lyrr easily figures out where the pressure plate is, in order to get through the door.

The next set of doors is easy to open now that Lyrr has a handle on the system, and you enter into what looks to be a cargo bay, with thick eye-rings and ratchet straps designed to secure items to the walls. As soon as you enter here, you can hear some rhythmic banging from deeper in the ship. There's a set of doors in the eastern wall, leading deeper into the ship.

As the door opens, Hamster quickly walks in, weapon up, scanning for danger.

Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 10

"Clear." he says, seeing no enemies.

Pointing the weapon at the floor, he walks toward the eastern door. Hearing the banging, he turns a wry grin to Eschade. "Sounds like someone survived. Probably trying to fix the engines now. Perhaps we can lend a hand once we find them.

I hope they speak a language we understand...."

You don't really see anything worthwhile; it's a standard cargo hold...if for an entirely different species or society...so I guess not really that standard.

”Or it’s a music program running in the crew’s absence...” Eschade replies smoothly. Eschade puts an ear to the hull, trying to discern if it really is rhythmic...

Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 11

You listen for a repeating beat or some sense of musical aptitude, but no...there is none. It's repeated banging, but seems to be at random intervals. More like something living is making the noise, and not for a musical intent.

Lyrr shrugs at Eschade's response, realizing that anything could be possible at this point. That said, they keep their rifle slung over their shoulder, picking up the Onyx chucks as they pass by, thinking that they could be useful down the road.

Taking in the site of what would normally be such a simple thing in any other ship, they suggest, "Shall we go say hello?"
