Tyrion returns from the kitchen. "Found this in the kitchen trash." He shows the empty vial to the sheriff and passes it around to the group for examination. He continues, "I still think Trin is involved, but since we found this vial in the kitchen, I'm willing to join Mandoo in speaking to the Feedmill chef about this vial. Especially if the sheriff is willing to take us there tonight."

After making your request to Cooky, he goes and forwards your request to Tamari.

"Fine. You can go through his belongings, but I won't let you ransack the wagons."

She leads you to one of the wagons and opens up a large chest. It is filled with a bewildering assortment of odds and ends, including a bottle with a tiny skull floating in oil, a taxidermic dragon welp, a mummified owlbear paw, a shiny crystal that holds the illusionary image of a mountain peak inside, and so on. There is also a small portable alchemist's kit in the wagon, mostly drained of its supplies. There is also a sealed box within, but Tamli won't you to examine it at all. Finally, there are numerous large books.

Opening up the books, you find that it is crammed full of notes with details about his travels and transactions over many years. Given some time, you might be able to puzzle out the notes.

The sheriff leads the party north to Amora's home. As you go through the area, you notice that the trees, clearly once some sort of crop, are fowl and rotten, the trees have taken on a sickness.

As the Sheriff is leading you north, another Farmer comes up to him. "Hey Sheriff! Darlene and Sandy are fighting again. Now I heard you got some sort of trouble brewing, but you mind helpin me real quick breaking them up? I can't get between me wife and Sandy. The'll tear my head off if ya know what I mean."

The sheriff sighs and turns to you. "See those lights up ahead? That where Amora Kasillan lives. Just go on up and knock on her door, but be polite. I can't really picture her having some sort of beef with Bort, at least not one where she decided to poison the guy. I need to go help him," he says pointing a thumb over his shoulder "break up a commotion before it gets bad. Women..."

Tyrion is shocked to see how bad the forest looks in this area. He turns to the druid expecting him to be equally in awe, "Darr, I pride myself on my nature knowledge, but you're the expert. Shall we take a look?" Tyrion walks up to the base of one of the sick trees and studies it.

Don't know if Mandoo is with Lizzo during this search of Bort's stuff, but is there any chance that the "bottle with a tiny skull floating in oil" looks anything like the vial that Tyrion found in the kitchen? Is the bottle full, or is it missing an amount that might fit in a small vial? Does it by any chance have a "very sweet & flowery" aroma? Are there any vials in the alchemist kit that that match the poison vial? I'm asking for a friend.

I believe that Amora is female. I recall Bort referring to her as "Ms. Kasilian" before his untimely demise.

In case they aren't answered during Tyrion's questioning, here are the types of questions that Mandoo wants answered by Ms Kasillan:

"Porridge very good. Who make porridge?"

"Who put porridge in bowl?"

"Bowl sit in kitchen long time after?"

"Heard Kolnral serve porridge. Kolnral good person?"

"Anyone near bowl before Kolnral take?"

"Where Kolnral live?"

"Anything odd happen in kitchen tonight?

"Know Lawren Kent? Know where is now?"

If Amora mentions anyone other than Kolnral behaving strangely or interacting with the bowl in any way before it was served, then Mandoo will also want to know where to find that person.

Tyrion decides it would be wise not to approach the sick tree and poke a stick at the rather ginormous beehive in the hollowed-out wood.

As for the apple trees themselves, they have been infected with some disease or other. You are not really sure what disease caused them to become foul.

Amora is an elderly human in her 40s or 50s. For a woman who is slowly gaining more and more white hair, she has aged rather gracefully. "Oh, you must be the fellows Bort took on as passengers. What can I do for you? she asks.

After hearing your explanation, she invites you inside and offers you some tea and cookies. Off to the side in the small but cozy room is a beekeepers outfit sized for her, as well as a few smokesticks alongside a smoker.

"Gosh, are you telling me that someone poisoned Bort and I didn't notice? I... I don't really know what to say. I don't think anyone else was in the kitchen beside me, Trin, and Kolnral. , but I did go out more than once to empty out the slop bucket, and it is quite a distance from the kitchen to the disposal area. After sipping his tea, deep in thought, he asks Amora as delicately as possible, "So ... you must know Trin pretty well. Was she ... close with Bort? We heard she spent some private time with him occasionally, and we'll tread lightly when we speak to her if you think she'd be overly emotional due to his passing."

Once questions are answered, Tyrion turns to the group and suggests, "If it's not too late, perhaps we should visit Kolnral on our way back to the Feedmill." He looks around to see if anyone is interested.

Unless our GM advises that it's too late for one more visit.

Despite the late hour, you decide to go visit Kolnral on your way back to the Freedmil.

His home is a very small two story home. The six of you end up being somewhat crowded in the living room when Kolnral receives you, complete with a crying baby on his shoulder.

For the most part, his testimony was similar to the rest of of his coworkers. He didn't see anything unusual for the most part. You do however find some new information when you ask if anyone else .

"Hmmm. Well, I did see Phinick loitering around the back a little bit. He works around here as the the town's garbage man, picks up the trash around the town, eats the town's castaways, and burns the rest near his home. That goblin wouldn't hurt a fly though. He is too afraid of us "longshanks" as he would say."

Hmmm. What now?

Mandoo is a little disappointed. He was hoping to discover that Kolnral was involved in the plot to kill Bort and would give up his accomplices if put under enough pressure. Instead, it appears that he's just another innocent bystander, much just like Delma, Amora, Cooky and the rest of Bort's crew (and Darlene and Sandy :-).

I'm assuming that the kitchen in the Feedmill is its own separate room with an opaque door between it and the main bar/dining hall making it difficult for customers to see inside the kitchen. If this is not the case, then some of the following may not apply.

Mandoo now suspects that the kitchen crew was not directly involved in Bort's death. He now suspects that someone else entered the kitchen and administered the poison to Bort's porridge when it was left unattended. The person in question would have had to be very familiar with Bort's habits, and must have known that Bort always got a bowl of turnip porridge for dessert. The person in question must also have had the opportunity to poison Bort's bowl without anyone seeing them. Such a person must have been positioned so as to see when Amora left the kitchen by the back door with the slop bucket and, after peeking into the kitchen to make sure it was empty, then entered to poison the porridge.

Though slightly dejected, Mandoo pushes on to try and confirm his new suspicions, "Amora say only she, Trin and you in kitchen tonight. Amora say she leave kitchen to empty slop bucket. Trin not in kitchen when dessert made and served. Was kitchen empty sometimes? Maybe after Amora make Bort's porridge and before you serve us dessert? Was kitchen empty when you pick up our dessert?"

Mandoo wonders if it's worth tracking down and questioning Trin tonight. During the time that the porridge was made and then served, Trin was either tending bar or sitting and talking to them at the table. Trin may have started the brawl deliberately, but Mandoo doesn't believe that she could have poisoned the porridge.

The goblin garbageman called Phinick that Kolnral mentioned sounded like a much more interesting possibility. If his suspicions about the poisoner were correct, then either Phinick was the poisoner or he may well have seen the poisoner loitering around the back waiting for Amora to leave.

Mandoo asks Kolnral, "Where Phinick live?"

Amora recalled that Trin and Bort didn't talk all that much to each other, but last year Amora started dressing much more consertively, and they started talking a lot to each other whenever they saw each other.

Reguarding the beekeeper suit, it is something she picked up a few years ago, when the apple trees around here died and the local farmers moved to more fertile fields south. There were plenty of empty homes to move to after all.

I suppose the kitchen would be empty at times. It isn't like we were worried about anyone coming into the kitchen before to put poison in our food.

Lizzo seems to agree with Mandoo, he was hoping to find a grudge someone from the kitchen had with Bort. From what he can tell, it sounds like Trin and Bort may have been in a secret relationship. While it doesn't look like Trin did the poisoning at this point, he hasn't completely ruled out the possibility. Tracking down a wife or husband killer was 50% of his business as a bounty hunter.

He votes to wrap up questioning for the night, and track down the cabin in he woods in the morning, and then with question Trin over lunch. Or is that a bad idea to eat from that kitchen again? He will grudgingly go along if out voted.

Tamari wrote:

He will definitely do this. At some point before leaving town he'll stop by the kitchen and collect the recipe. He'll be sure to bring a bushel of turnips and the recipe on his next trip home to share with his fellow Iruxi.

Is there any reason not to just head to Trin's and finishing up our questioning tonight? I'd just as soon get it done now so we have all available info. Having said that, if our GM expects Trin's visit to be more involved than simple question/answers, then we wait till morning. Either way, I'd be grateful if the next GM post gets us back to the Feedmill for the night (hopefully after getting info from Trin by asking our typical questions). It's just that the game feels like it's dragging, and I think we need the GM's help in moving things along.

My only concern is that in murder mysteries of this variety, witnesses have a habit of disappearing or dying prematurely, so the sooner we get to them the better. I'm guessing that's not the case here and it likely doesn't matter if we track down Trin/Phinick now rather than in the morning. Also, questioning Trin/Phinick is likely to lengthen the suspect list (Hallod? Lawren Kent? Flonk? Sandy and Darlene?) and we're not going to be able to question them all tonight. I'll leave it to the GM to decide what moves things along faster, but...

After they leave Kolnral's house, Mandoo is eager to find Trin and Phinick to question them about what they might know. He wonders if perhaps it is too late in the evening to continue their investigation, but worries that the long night might erase valuable clues that would help them in tracking down the poisoner.

He is particularly interested to find out how Phinick is involved. Kolnral's description of the goblin suggests that he's unlikely to be the poisoner, but Mandoo is not sure he believes that. Even if that were the case, Phinick was possibly in a position to witness the poisoner entering the kitchen. Still, thinking back on the wolves and bloodseekers of earlier in the day, the thought of traipsing around near the woods in the middle of the night does not appeal to him. Phinick can probably wait until morning.

Addressing the group, he says, "Mandoo say see Trin now. Go Feedmill after." Given what they had learned of Trin and Bort's relationship, talking to Trin in private might make her less reticent to share what she knows, even if they did have to wake her up to do it.

Lizzo Plaguestone wrote:

Do I take it from this comment that Lizzo was alone when he inspected Bort's belongings and that he later filled in the rest of the group on everything he discovered there, not just specifically the sealed box? I'll assume so. If not, then Mandoo will first ask for a full accounting.

Mandoo turns to Lizzo and speaking loudly enough for the whole group to hear, says, "Lizzo say Bort have skull bottle in chest. Smell sweet and flowery? Was full or slightly empty? Could be same poison as kill Bort?"

I assume our GM will have to answer these questions for Lizzo.

So in the interest of saving time, I'll try to fast forward the questions and give you the most relevant information.

You decide to go see Trin, despite the late hour. His brother eventually answers the door, and very, very reluctantly lets you in.

Trin explains that she didn't notice anything in particular last night. She spent the night hanging back with you, talking to Bort, and moving back and forth between the kitchen and tables.

If you asked to search her home for evidence, she reluctantly agrees, and you don't find anything to link her to Bort's death.

Regarding the instance in which she was witnessed Bort on her back, she turns around, and begins to disrobe in front of you. Her back is lined with a large scar on her back.

Someone once ambushed me from behind me some time ago; tried to take my maidenhood. Bort heard the commotion, and came to check out the commotion. That is also when I got this scar. I'm very grateful to him for that, and now I think I'll never really ever be able to repay him.

"Bort always thought it was Harrold, and tried to prove it, but he was never able to. I asked him to stop, because Harrold is very dangerous. He said he would, but now I think he never did..."

I'm going to assume you want to give this information to the Sheriff, but he's gone to bed by now, so you'll have to do it in the morning.

Any questions that you want answered before I cycle to the morning?

Tyrion thinks aloud, "I believe we heard that a burly drunk named Hallod was asked to leave the Feedmill today. If Bort thought Hallod was involved with the attack on Trin a while back, that would give Hallod motive." After a short pause, he adds, "And didn't Amora refer to Hallod as the richest man in town? If so, he might have the means to take care of Bort."

While returning to the Feedmill, Tyrion and Mandoo chat quietly. Later, after everyone returns to their rooms for the night, the halfling slips off downstairs "to get some fresh air" if anyone asks. He meets Mandoo outside near the wagon that Lizzo described so they can take a closer look at the mysterious crate.

Tyrion and Mandoo would each like to use Thievery to unlock the crate and peek inside. Each has a set of Thieves Tools.

His home is an absolute mess, and he doesn't seem to do much outside of raising his dogs, but now he seems to be the richest person in town now. He is always careful not to step over the Sheriff's line and leaves when he asks."

Before going to bed, you sneak out to the wagon and take a look around, looking for the box. Tyrion opens the box...

It turns out to be a jewelry box. There are six rings within it, each is a jeweled and well crafted piece of art, and will likely fetch well in the open market.

What do you do with the rings?

Together, Tyrion and Mandoo work the lock free without damaging it. Tyrion picks up a ring and marvels at it. He then looks to the monk and whispers, "Probably legitimate business here ... no clues to Bort's untimely death." Unless Mandoo has objections, Tyrion puts the ring back as he found it. If Mandoo is satisfied, he allows Mandoo to re-lock the chest and leave everything as they found it.

Tyrion then heads back inside, sits at the bar for one last nightcap, and climbs upstairs to get some much-needed sleep.

Mandoo didn't know much about poisons except that they required skill to prepare and tended to be expensive. The stronger the poison, the more difficult and expensive it was to obtain. The poison used on Bort seemed to be of a particularly nasty type and must have cost the poisoner a fair sum; a sum far greater than anyone he'd met in the village so far was likely to afford. So when Amora mentioned that Hallod was rich, it had piqued Mandoo's interest in the man.

Mandoo nods in agreement at Tyrion's comment, "Tyrion correct. Strong poison expensive; very expensive. Bort dangerous to Hallod. Hallod not like Bort. Hallod rich. Hallod dangerous. Means; motive; willingness. But opportunity? Not sure yet. Maybe Phinick know. Must find Phinick tomorrow."

Mandoo makes a mental note to ask Delma or the sheriff where Hallod lived.

Unless the markings turn out to be Hallit (the Kellid language), Mandoo is of no help.

Mandoo also gives the papers a quick look, but his doubts are quickly confirmed. He cannot make head or tail of the markings and wouldn't even know how to begin to decipher them.

Mandoo says somewhat apologetically, "Mandoo not know writing. Cannot help. Sorry."

Mandoo is impressed by the rings, but the temptation to walk off with them is slight. He nods in agreement at Tyrion's comment.

What interested Mandoo more were the other objects in the chest. Ever since finding out which poison was used, he'd been wondering how the poisoner had obtained it. So when Lizzo mentioned seeing a bottle with a tiny skull, he'd wondered if Bort himself had brought the poison to the village.

I assume that the bottle with the skull in oil is merely another anatomical specimen, much like the other items in the chest, and not in fact a bottle of poison.

Mandoo looks through the other items in the chest. They appear to be interesting curios of the type he'd seen for sale in the markets of Absalom. He remembers marveling at such things when he'd first entered the big city, but after several months there, familiarity had bred contempt and he'd lost that initial wonder.

The bottle that he'd thought might hold the poison looked like just another animal skull preserved in oil; a specimen for display or perhaps to be used for research by a druid or alchemist. Just to make sure, he sniffed at it, but detected none of poison's the sweet & flowery aroma.

It had been a long day and Mandoo expected tomorrow would be no different. Better head up to the room to get some sleep.

Looks like one has to be trained in Society to give Decipher Writing a shot (pp234). If so, then only Tyrion and Quecksworth have any chance. Is Darr's Scribing Lore of any use? I know we're trying to read the text and not write it, but I don't see a Reading Lore, so maybe Scribing works for both.

The books are large and filled to the brim with details about his travels and transactions over many years. Bort visited Etran’s Folly at least 22 times in the past decade, and about three years ago the merchant started making deliveries labeled “reagents” to someone referred to only as “H,” receiving rather large sums of gold in exchange. These deliveries are numbered, starting with 1 and ending with delivery number 14, which occurred the day the caravan arrived in town.

It is 10 AM. Where are you going first?

Morning Routine:
Mando wakes up early and heads out to the courtyard of the Feedmill to do some stretching. He follows this up with increasingly more vigorous exercises until he's broken a nice sweat. After cleaning up, he goes to the Feedmill dining room and orders a nice big bowl of Amora's turnip porridge, which he devours with relish. There he waits for the others to appear.

"Mandoo say go see Phinick. Hear what Phinick see outside kitchen. Hear what he knows of Hallod and reagents."

Mandoo then pauses and furrows his brow in thought, "Tyrion probably correct. Maybe better see sheriff first. Tell what find in books. Hear what he knows of Hallod and reagents. Hear where Hallod live."

Musings:
Upon hearing that someone in the village called H with a lot of gold was buying large quantities of reagents, Mando naturally assumed that Hallod was this H person. But what would Hallod be doing with all these reagents? Presumably it would take an experienced alchemist to do anything interesting with such chemicals. Was Hallod such an alchemist? Mandoo doubted it.

Mando then realized that if there were such an alchemist in the area - either Hallod himself, or someone he hired - then it would probably be no big deal for such a person to brew up some poison with which to kill Bort; especially if they had a lot of expensive reagents lying around anyway. Mandoo sighs inwardly; looks like poor Bort may well have supplied the ingredients of his own doom.

And what would Hallod be wanting with all these reagents? Clearly, whatever it was was making him a lot of gold, but how could such an apparently large-scale enterprise using large quantities of poisonous chemicals go undetected in such a small village?

Mandoo's thoughts flash back to their visit to Amora last night and all the sick and dying crops they saw along the way. Tyrion couldn't determine the source of the sickness, but it whatever it was did not seem natural to Mandoo. He wondered if the reagents that Bort had delivered to the village had anything to do with it.

As they wander around the village today, Mandoo decides to keep a close eye on the extent of the sickness affecting the crops and to see if he can determine a possible source.

OK, I'm confused. There seems to be a slight disconnect between the description and the map. The only way to make the description match the map is to have Phinick and the boar running around the house in a counter-clockwise direction. I'll assume this to be the case.

When he first hears the goblin's cries, Mandoo slides the bo staff out from behind his back. As soon as the boar comes into sight, a big grin materializes on Mandoo's face and he immediately takes off running towards the creature.

Given that we can see both Phinick and the boar and that both seem to be running around the house without too much trouble, I will assume that the green stuff we see on the map is some sort of low grass that can be treated as regular terrain.

Mandoo will take his two Strides immediately, but will delay his final Strike until after Quecksworth does his Inspire Courage (if he does), but definitely before the boar is about to start his turn. Bo staffs have the Reach trait, so my understanding is that Mandoo can Strike the boar with it from 2 squares out. If this is not the case, he'll instead first move up next to the boar to strike.

Action 2: Stride
Action 3: Strike (Bo Staff) + Flurry of Blows + Inspire Courage

Bo Staff 2 Damage: 1d8 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 1 = 10

Mandoo, I don't know how it is in D&D, but you can't split up your turn like that. You can delay your entire turn for Quecksworth to act, and you can use two actions to set up a single action as a triggered reaction, but you can't use two actions and wait on using your third action.

Double move, Recall Knowledge. If I get a couple questions about the beast, I choose 1) Special Attacks. 2) Special Defenses. Map updated.
