Mandoo |
Mandoo was closely watching Tyrion working on the lock when the trap sprung. He quickly catches his friend as the dart strikes home and lays him down gently.
To be fair, if Tyrion was saving vs. poison, he 100% would have used a hero point if he rolled a total of 9 on the save. If you'll allow that, could you please re-roll for me? If not, Tyrion will make do.
If the poison stands, then it's 12 damage from the dart, plus 2 damage from "drained" (drained 2 x level 1), for a total of 14. But then his max HP drops 2, so he goes from 16 to 14. So he would be at 0, correct? If all that's true, he's at Dying 1? Or does the first Drain damage happen after an hour?
Assuming Tyrion is down to 0 HP, does that mean he's knocked out? Is his condition "unconscious", "dying 1", or "dying 2" (due to the crit)? Can someone who's knocked out accept liquid? If so, then...
From his bandolier, Mandoo quickly pulls out one of his minor Elixir of Life potions and proceeds to pour it down Tyrion's throat.
Elixir of Life, minor: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Hopefully that will get him back on his feet.

Looks like our posts crossed in the night. As Emily Litella used to say, "Never mind!"
Tyrion 2.0 |
Not sure anyone but us old folks know who Emily Litella was. Gotta love Gilda Ridner!
Very nice playing with a benevolent GM. Thanks for the Hero Point reroll ... even though the result didn't seem to make you as happy as I. Enjoy the fact you crit on a max of 6 on the die. So the dart did more damage than the damn dogs.
Tyrion sees his life, short that it has been, start to flash before his eyes. But then, he improbably starts feeling better. He opens his eyes, grabs his neck, and pulls out the nasty dart. He grumbles, "Clearly I need more practice at finding traps. Next time, you guys can use your crowbars!" He notices Mandoo approaching with a healing elixir. "Thanks but I'll try to heal myself when I'm feeling up to it. If not, I have my own potion."
Turning to the others, "Maybe just give me a few minutes to rest here. In the meantime, what was in the box?"
If no one else has attempted to heal him, after he's rested a while, he'll pull out his healing tools and use some ointment on his neck.
Medicine-Treat Wounds: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Damage Healed: 2d8 ⇒ (1, 8) = 9
If this keeps up, he'll have to ask Delma for help in restocking his healing supplies!
Lizzo Plaguestone |
Lizzo nods down the hallway and says:
"Tyrion, you've been very brave today. Would you like sssomeone elssse to take the lead?"
If so, he offers to take point and light the hallway with his wayfinder. He's itching to get moving again, worried that someone may be escaping out the back. His favorite part of bounty hunting is the adrenaline rush of a capture, and the worst part is an escape.
Tyrion 2.0 |
Officially, Treat Wounds can only be done once/hour. Although these were 2 completely different wounds requiring different treatment. Either way, it's probably been nearly an hour. Immediately following the dogfight, Tyrion treated his wounds. After that, we searched that room, Mandoo picked the door lock, we searched the next room, Mandoo took care of business, Tyrion got poisoned, group looked through strongbox, etc.
"Tyrion, you've been very brave today. Would you like sssomeone elssse to take the lead?" If so, he offers to take point and light the hallway with his wayfinder. He's itching to get moving again, worried that someone may be escaping out the back. His favorite part of bounty hunting is the adrenaline rush of a capture, and the worst part is an escape.
Tyrion turns to Lizzo, "I'll be fine continuing to lead and look for traps along the way. I may miss one occasionally..." as he pauses to rub his neck, "...but it's still best to try, yes? I can tell you're itching to get going. Just give me a few more minutes to recover, and I'll be ready to go."
Assuming the group filled him in on what was in the box...
Tyrion studies the strange map, "Does this area look familiar to anyone? Phinick referred to this place as the Hideout. Maybe this tree stump is the dead tree in front of his house. I don't remember seeing any pond in town though."
Can we get any info from the receipts and transactions in these notes?
"Before moving on, did we ever identify those 2 vials that Darr found?" If not, Tyrion will attempt to identify.
Crafting-Identify Airtight Vials: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
After discussing, Tyrion hops up, flexes his bandaged arm, and says, "Good enough ... let's continue!" He leads the way through the SE passage.
Mandoo |
Mandoo is happy to see that Tyrion managed to shake off what could well have been a fatal trap. He looks at the map with Tyrion and nods in agreement at his conclusions.
Pointing at the transactions, he says, "Maybe Bort deliveries; maybe not." Then pointing at the map, "If so, then maybe DROP POINT where Bort deliver, next to tree outside."
Looking around, he adds, "Rooms not look like cave.", then pointing at the rough passaway in the corner, "That look like cave. Maybe water beyond."
Mandoo looks at the receipts and transaction list to see if there is anything there to identify what they were for, and whom they were from.
Will you be posting the map and receipt content, or do I take it that your short description is indicative of the lack of detail available?
Mandoo |
Nonchalantly glancing at the coins in the chest, Mandoo states, "Finders keepers. Mandoo carry coins," then, after a short pause and a smile, adds, "... for team; of course."
Assuming no one objects... Mandoo collects the coins and drops them into a spare pocket of his bandolier.

The reciepts match the logs from Bort's ledgers. The transaction list contains a value slightly higher than that listed on the corresponding reciept from Bort.
There is enough detail on the map that you can follow the map and make your way to the meeting place.
Will you follow the map? Or go deeper into the underground passage?
Tyrion 2.0 |
Wise Fox -- In my last post, Tyrion rolled a 23 Craft to identify those other vials we found, which I believe is a crit success. What do we know about them?
Tyrion continues studying the map, and nods to Lizzo. "I agree. We're this far into this underground passage, we should see it through. We can investigate the meeting place when we're done here."
Unless there are objections, Tyrion leads the way through the SW passage.
As usual down here: Avoid Notice exploration mode, rapier in hand, and passively checking for traps.
GM Wise Fox |
Wise Fox -- In my last post, Tyrion rolled a 23 Craft to identify those other vials we found, which I believe is a crit success. What do we know about them?
Two vials of alchemist fire.
After searching the rest of the area thoroughly and finding nothing of additional interest, you continue navigating the caves. Although the path is far from level, it has been worked to allow for easy travel; stalagmites have been cleared away in some spots and small wooden footbridges have been stretched over pools of stagnant water no more than five feet deep.
It takes about 10 minutes of travel, but eventually the passageway opens up into a large natural chamber, the center of which i occupied by a pool of brackish water. Stalactites and stalagmites occupy much of the room, but a path between them leads around the pool and to another corridor on the opposite side of the cave.
The moment you enter the room, a strange blue glow emanates up from the pool, sending a cascade of shimmering light to the ceiling above. Seconds later, the head of a giant blue snake rises from the pool with sparks of electricity dancing between its fangs, while a metal, rattle-tipped tail pokes out of the water behind it, audibly building up a charge with every flick of the rattle.
Tyrion Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21

Darr Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Lizzo Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Snake: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Party may act before I get to go.
Water is 5 ft deep. It is considered difficult terrain. You are also flatfooted in it if you don't have a swim speed (which should be all of you). You take a =2 circumstance penalty to melee slashing or bludgeoning attacks that pass through water.
The snake is perched on the only piece of relatively dry rock in the middle of the pool.
Map updated.

When Tyrion identifies the vials as Alchemist Fire, he offers to hang onto them for now. If anyone wants one, he's happy to oblige.
And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming...
Crouching behind some rubble, Tyrion sees the snake on the rocks. He considers his options and delays a few moments to see if Quecksworth plays a battle tune.
Once he's feeling inspired, he drops his rapier by his side and pulls out his short bow. Finally, he pops out from hiding and fires 2 arrows at the snake.
Shortbow 1st Attack: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 7 + 1 = 24
Shortbow Damage + Sneak: 1d6 + 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + (2) + 1 = 9
Shortbow 2nd Attack: 1d20 + 7 - 5 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 7 - 5 + 1 = 7
Shortbow Damage + Sneak: 1d6 + 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + (5) + 1 = 8
If the 24 happens to crit, considering the snake is flat-footed to the rogue this round, double damage plus the following d10...
Shortbow Deadly d10: 1d10 ⇒ 6
Damage is either 9 for a normal hit, or 24 for a crit
Lizzo Plaguestone |
Lizzo's eyes go wide at the sight of the giant serpent, his adrenalin pulses at the challenge ahead. As the music begins to play he designates the snake his prey, moves, and fires twice with his bow.
Do the rocks provide cover? Lizzo would try and get a shot that doesn't have cover, but is still outside the water.
Short Bow 1: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 7 + 1 = 13

Short Bow 2: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 4 + 1 = 20

My understanding (pp544) is that alchemical bombs are considered 20ft "martial thrown weapons", so the profiency bonus comes from "martial weapons" (or "alchemical bombs") training with no improvised weapon penalty. Do I have that right? It appears that only Lizzo (Ranger) and Kaneda (Fighter) are so trained; Mandoo is only trained in "monk" martial weapons; and the rest are at best trained in simple weapons and/or specific weapon types. If so, it might be better if Lizzo (and/or an active Kaneda) were to carry the bombs to maximize their potential in combat.
Mandoo quickly moves to a spot where he can get a clear shot at the snake while at the same time being within 20 feet of it (one of the two squares just north of Tyrion should work). From there, he lets loose the shuriken of war before once again moving to the cover provided by the cave's exit opening, all the while avoiding contact with the water.
Action 1: Stride
Action 2: Strike (Shuriken) + Flurry of Blows
Action 3: Stride
Assuming Quecksworth provides his usual inspiration...
Shuriken 1 20ft: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 7 + 1 = 25
Shuriken 1 Damage: 1d4 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 1 = 8
Shuriken 2 20ft: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 7 + 1 - 4 = 19
Shuriken 2 Damage: 1d4 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 1 = 8
Crits with shuriken cause 1d6 persistent bleed damage
Tyrion 2.0 |
Regarding the Alchemist Fire vials, so Tyrion, Mandoo, and Kandeda are at +4 tossing a bomb, while Lizzo is at +7. Back in the living quarters, Tyrion keeps one and hands one to Lizzo. If anyone else wants one, we'll work it out after the snake. Speaking of the snake ...
Fun Fact: take a look at p.269 of the Core Rulebook. Looks like Kaneda fighting this blue snake!
Quecksworth the Attendant |
Seeing the others spring into action, Quecksworth looks addled for a moment. "Oh, what?"
Upon hearing the rattle, he nods and pulls out his lute. With a quick tuning, he moves forward and begins to sing.
"In caves most dark, the sound of rattle.
Alerts the well-trained to coming battle."
Inspire Courage
Tyrion 2.0 |
Inspire Courage says +1 for all attack rolls and damage rolls. Since Darr's Tempest Surge does damage, it counts for that too, right? I mean, Inspire Courage doesn't exclude spell damage, does it?

Sorry, I haven't been posting. Been sick with the flue
Darr strides up and casts Tempest Surge.
Inspire Courage says +1 for all attack rolls and damage rolls. Since Darr's Tempest Surge does damage, it counts for that too, right? I mean, Inspire Courage doesn't exclude spell damage, does it?
Yes, that is my reading of the rules.
reflex save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Darr casts a spell, unleashing lightning against a lightning snake! It is surprisingly effective! The serpent looses control of its motor functions for a moment, but quickly recovers. It rattles its metal tail. The electricity in its tail leaps out directly at Tyrion and Quecksworth!
electric damage: 2d10 ⇒ (2, 7) = 9
Tyrion's reflex save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12 *fail - full damage
Quecksworth's reflex save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20 - half damage
The bolt of lightning catches Tyrion. He convulses terribly as the electricity arcs through him. Quecksworth manages to partially avoid the bolt of lightning, only receiving moderate electrical burns.
Kaneda, slow to react, turns the corner and rushes head first toward the wounded snake and swings his katana, intent on finishing it off.
Stride, stride, strike
As Kaneda approaches, the Serpent strikes at Kaneda from over 6ft away!
Coiled Opportunity: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (16) + 13 = 29
damage: 1d8 + 2 + 1d4 ⇒ (6) + 2 + (3) = 11
katana swing: 1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 8 - 2 = 19 *miss*
The electric bite of the snake causes Kaneda to flinch, ruining his katana attack on the electric snake!
-------------------------------------------------------------
Snake doesn't looks pretty wounded. Party is up!
Tyrion 2.0 |
Tyrion reels from the electric shock. He looks down at himself and realizes he's not in good shape. In fact, he's in very bad shape and immediately attempts some in-battle healing.
Medicine-Battle Medicine: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Well damn...missed it by THAT much.
He must have worked a little too quickly, because he doesn't feel any better. He shrugs it off, taking a good look at the slimy blue creature to recall what he knows of such beasts. I'll assume Nature?
Nature-Recall Knowledge: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
He shares what he remembers with the group, specifically about the beast's special attacks and defenses.
Finally, he tries to hide behind the rocks and rubble around him, to hopefully avoid the snake's notice next turn and, more importantly, position himself for a future Sneak Attack.
Stealth-Hide: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
He feels like he's well-hidden and stays perfectly still, as if his life depends on it.
GM Wise Fox |
Snake doesn't looks pretty wounded.
*sigh* Supposed to say, "Snake looks very wounded"
He must have worked a little too quickly, because he doesn't feel any better. He shrugs it off, taking a good look at the slimy blue creature to recall what he knows of such beasts.
Tyrion realizes that the animal the party is fighting is a very unique creature known as a Giant Lightning Serpent. Its metal tail can unleash a bolt of lightning in a 60 ft line every 6 to 24 seconds, and can make attacks of opportunity when it takes time to coil itself.
Mandoo |
Mandoo is surprised that his second shuriken didn't strike home like the first. When he then sees Lizzo's excellent second shot glance off the creature, he is even more surprised. "That snake skin is a lot tougher than it looks."
When the lightning bolt strikes Tyrion full in the chest, Mandoo flinches and expects the worst, but is gratified to see that the halfling is still standing. "Those little guys are pretty tough I guess", he thinks to himself.
The snake appears to be at death's door (hope springs eternal); another good hit with a shuriken might finish off the creature. He moves out of cover, finds a good spot with a clear shot at the snake, and let's loose another flurry. He then quickly moves back to his previous cover.
Action 1: Stride
Action 2: Strike (Shuriken) + Flurry of Blows
Action 3: Stride
Shuriken 1 20ft: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 7 + 1 = 9

Shuriken 1 20ft: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 7 + 1 = 24
That's more like it!
Shuriken 1 Damage: 1d4 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 1 = 9
Shuriken 2 20ft: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 7 + 1 - 4 = 16

Quecksworth continues to play.
"Watch out for fangs,
Avoid that Tail.
By fist or by blade,

For good measure, the halfling draws his sling and loads it.

Apparently it's just not his day.
Darr Gahgun |
If the serpent does not fall from his team members attack, Darr will cast Electric Arc.
Electric Arc: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
----
If the serpent is defeated, he will then do a 3 action Heal.
"Good work everyone!"
Heal: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
Mandoo |
Um, guys... I don't know how much longer this snake is going to last, and it's probably too late for this round anyway, but...
The snake doesn't seem to be in any hurry to get off its perch and chase us down, especially now that Kaneda has decided to commit seppuku by wading after it into the pool. Tyrion seems to be able to hide in-place, but the rest of us should be saving our last action to take cover by striding into one of the two passageways and removing ourselves from the snake's view. If it can't see us, it will be a lot harder for it to hit us with its lightning.
This may reduce the number of attacks we can make each round, but with an AC of 21+, only the first attack is going to count unless you get really lucky. Then it's just a waiting game until we rack up enough hits to kill it.
If the snake is stupid enough to leave the pool and come after us, then great; we get to slice and dice with bigger weapons than shuriken and arrows, and with flanking to help, we should finish the job a lot faster.
Just saying...
GM Wise Fox |
Reflex save: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29 *crit success*
As music plays, a flury of shuriken flies out at the snake, followed by a volley of arrows, which the lightning serpent can't dodge them all. One shruiken slices through its flesh.
The arc of lightning misses the snake, dodging into the pool before swimming out again.
recharge time in rounds: 1d4 ⇒ 3
The snake lashes out at Kaneda with charged fangs!
fangs: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20
damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7 piercing and 1d4 ⇒ 3 electricity
fangs: 1d20 + 11 - 5 ⇒ (3) + 11 - 5 = 9
damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10 piercing and 1d4 ⇒ 2 electricity
The lightning serpent strikes Kaneda in the throat. Blood gushes out as he falls! Releasing Kaneda, the serpent coils once again, ready to strike.
Tyrion 2.0 |
Tyrion looks on in horror as Kaneda drops from the serpent's attack. Even so, he knows he can't make a sound without giving up his position.
As he hears Quecksworth continue the inspirational song, Tyrion gathers his courage, pops out from behind his rocky cover, and fires 2 more arrows at the serpent.
Shortbow 1st Attack: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 7 + 1 = 11
Shortbow 2nd Attack: 1d20 + 7 - 5 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 7 - 5 + 1 = 11
Well, damn, time to use another hero point for that first attack.
Shortbow 1st Attack: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 7 + 1 = 24
Much better.
Shortbow Damage + Sneak: 1d6 + 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + (4) + 1 = 11
After he lets his arrows fly, he ducks behind his rocky cover once again.
Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
As before, he remains perfectly still, with his life still dangerously in the balance.
Lizzo Plaguestone |
Seeing our fighter go down, Lizzo heeds Mandoo’s advice. He switches to a hit and run tactic, firing two arrows and taking up position at the entrance.

Quecksworth the Attendant |
Quecksworth continues to sing.

"The might of men will not fail this day!
Nor will victory be 'llowed to slither away!"
The gnome then let's loose a stone at the serpent, before loading another.
Ranged (sling), IC: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 6 + 1 = 22
Damage (B), IC: 1d6 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 + 1 = 4
Mandoo |
Upon hearing Quecksworth's fatal bullet hit home, Mandoo comes out from cover and examines the situation.
Assuming that the snake appears to be truly dead and that there is no apparent residual electrical activity...
Mandoo quickly removes his backpack, bandolier and belt, and wades into the pool to fish out what is left of Kaneda. He carefully pulls Kaneda's body away from the snake and out of the pool to see if there is anything the healers can do with him.
He then dives back into the pool to have a closer look at the snake's body and whatever else may be laying around on the bottom of the pool. He pulls anything portable of interest from the water and reports his findings to the group.
Just in case he needs it...
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Athletics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Once out of the water, he dries himself as best he can, puts his equipment back on, but keeps his temple sword in hand. He positions himself near the exiting passageway in case the ruckus they made brings them any unwanted attention.
Tyrion 2.0 |
Tyrion carefully peeks out from around the rocks to make sure the serpent is really dead. He looks himself over and notices electrical burns all over his body. He tries to shrug it off, but winces from the pain, as he pulls out his flask to take a much-needed gulp of blackberry wine.
Still hearing Quecksworth's song, he turns to the gnome, "Thanks for the inspirational music, my friend. And well done with that sling. You're a man of many talents!" Once the water stops crackling with electricity, he joins Darr in examining Kaneda.
When the druid casts his Heal spell, Tyrion stretches and flexes. "Thanks Darr ... feel 100% better! How's the real patient doing?" He studies Kaneda carefully.
Not sure we get the extra +8 from healing on the 3-action heal. If not, Tyrion will try to complement the magical healing with some ointments from his medicine kit.
Medicine-Treat Wounds: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Damage Healed: 2d8 ⇒ (2, 4) = 6
Feeling as good as new, he keeps his gear out in case others need attention.
If everyone else is fine, Tyrion stows everything in his pack and joins Mandoo in looking around the room.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
If I don't need to use the first roll for Treat Wounds, please apply the decent roll of 11 to Perception instead for a total of 20.
Quecksworth the Attendant |
"Thanks for the inspirational music, my friend. And well done with that sling. You're a man of many talents!" Once the water stops crackling with electricity, he joins Darr in examining Kaneda.
"I humbly do my best, Master Tyrion." Quecksworth replies, already reaching for healer's tools to help.
"Poor Master Kaneda." he laments.
Should Medicine check be needed: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
With his work complete, he glances over at the body of the serpent. "Strange, such a dangerous creature being kept in what was labelled as a 'Hideout'." he ponders aloud. "Do you think we have slain someone's pet?"

"Firssst guard dogsss, and now a giant ssserpent. It appearsss sssomeone doesss not want to be bothered. Too bad for him, we're coming."
Lizzo inspects the carcass, this is the first time he's encountered a prey of this type. Seeing the party healing up, he starts a search of the cavern and then goes into overwatch peering down the tunnel.

Mandoo pulls Kaneda's body out of the water, and Quecksworth examines him. Unfortunately, the combination of electrical burns, loss of blood, and water in his lungs was too much for the poor samurai. He is dead.
Looking around, Mandoo takes a look inside the pool, where he notices the body of an explorer. Nothing more than bones now, the body has slowly been consumed by limestone that has calcified around its skeleton. There is a pommel of a weapon sticking out of the stone. Reaching down, he tries to pull out the weapon, but it is firmly stuck. If you want whatever the pommel is stuck to, you'll have to break it out, which probably will take some time beyond what is necessary to patch up your wounds; time that might be better spent following the cave path northward.
Kaneda has retired from the game. Feel free to distribute Kaneda's consumables around.
Tyrion 2.0 |
Tyrion, who is not often stunned, stares slack-jawed as Darr explains that it's too late to save Kaneda. Tyrion pours himself a mug of wine, and after offering it to others, he toasts the fighter, "You were a good man, Kaneda. It was a pleasure serving the society with you. You will be missed." He raises his glass and drinks to Kaneda.
Once he stows his mugs and wine, he looks back to Kaneda. Leave it to the rogue to go through Kaneda's belongings. "I got this." And he rifles through Kaneda's belongings, respectfully of course.
Pulling 20 arrows from Kaneda's quiver, he offers half to Lizzo, and replaces some of his own. He also finds a vial of Alchemist Fire, which brings our total to 3. "Up for grabs since Lizzo and I each took one found in the last room." There are also 2 minor healing potions. "I wouldn't mind hanging onto one for now. Who'd like the other?" He also finds a Smokestick, good for concealing, which could come in handy. If no one asks for it, he'll hold onto it. "There's also a set of Healers Tools and a Repair Kit. Can anyone use these?" Finally, Tyrion finds a coin pouch with 1gp and 8sp. He hands the pouch to Mandoo who collected the coins from the previous room, for a total of 22gp and 45sp.
Before Tyrion does his body cavity search on Kaneda, he suggests, "Does anyone want to Detect Magic on whatever it is that Mandoo found in the pool?"
Mandoo |
When Mandoo hears that Kaneda is on his final voyage to Pharasma's Boneyard, he is oddly unaffected. He'd never really warmed up to Kaneda; the man's impassive indifference did not invite closeness. Regardless, he hopes Kaneda is judged worthy by the Gray Lady and wishes him well in the afterlife.
Tyrion's looting of Kaneda's body does not strike Mandoo as offensive or even disrespectful. Quite the contrary. Leaving behind anything of the dead that could be useful to the living is what he would consider unacceptable. These were lessons one learned quickly in the harsh Realm of the Mammoth Lords and the wild foothills of the Kodar Mountains.
He happily takes Kaneda's few coins from Tyrion and adds them to the others he's already collected. Seeing as none of Kaneda's remaining possessions are of much interest to him, he raises no objections to Tyrion's distribution thereof. One item catches his eye though; Mandoo reaches down and picks up Kaneda's wayfinder. Putting it away in his backpack, he says "Must return wayfinder to society."
...the body has slowly been consumed by limestone that has calcified around its skeleton. There is a pommel of a weapon sticking out of the stone. If you want whatever the pommel is stuck to, you'll have to break it out, which probably will take some time beyond what is necessary to patch up your wounds; time that might be better spent following the cave path northward.
Can Mandoo tell what kind of weapon is attached to the pommel? Is it a pommel for a sword, or something smaller, like a dagger? Does it look like it is made of precious metals and/or encrusted with valuable gems? Enquiring minds want to know.
Before Tyrion does his body cavity search on Kaneda, he suggests, "Does anyone want to Detect Magic on whatever it is that Mandoo found in the pool?"
Mandoo suspects that the pommel is part of a weapon that he has not learned how to use effectively. It is thus of little interest to him as such, but if it proves to be magical or otherwise valuable, it could easily be converted into much more useful cash.
Assuming that someone casts a detect magic and it comes back positive, or Mandoo determines that it is made of precious metals and/or encrusted with valuable gems...
Before putting his equipment back on, Mandoo pulls the crowbar out of his backpack. Looking around, he says, "Mandoo get weapon," and dives back into the water to try and release the weapon from the stony embrace of the pool.
I'm going to assume that we're dealing with a situation similar to forcing open a door. If not, please modify the roll as necessary. Don't know if things will go faster if Lizzo helps, but Mandoo is happy to accept his aid if offered.

Lizzo Plaguestone |
Lizzo is saddened to see a comrad die in battle, but he did not seem to ever warm up to the Iruxi. Once we clear this cavern, he will return to retrieve the body. No pathfinder should be left behind, since he may have a resurrection insurance policy already in place.
"Thank you Tyrion, thisss will help. I'll need to resssupply in town before our next outing, but thisss will get me through today."
Neither was Lizzo offended by Tyrion ransacking the body so quickly. He would want Tyrion to do the same to him if the goods would help complete the mission. Although if Kaneda does return from the dead, he'll replace the 10 arrows he took.
He was rather impressed with the speed the Halfling performed the pilfering in. He wasn't even sure Kaneda was dead yet before he was handed a quiver of arrows. It's a good thing the thief is on our side.
If it helps speed things up, Lizzo pulls out his crowbar and tries to help Mandoo.

GM Wise Fox |
It takes an additional 10 minutes of work to get the weapon out of the stone and water, but it appears to be time well worth spent. You pull out an simple but exquisitely crafted rapier. For a blade exposed to the watery elements, it has somehow retained its sharp edge extremely well and without rust. Engraved in the blade is the word, "Whistler".
Mandoo |
Mandoo and Lizzo emerge from the pool with the rapier and show it to the rest of the group. Mandoo notes, "Rapier in water long time; very long time. Rapier like new. Rapier likely magic."
Mandoo was never all that interested in the magical side of things, but did manage to stay awake long enough in Master Farabellus' classes at the Grand Lodge to pick up some knowledge of magical weapons. He recalls that weapons were imbued with magic by the use of certain runes, so he carefully examines the rapier for their presence, taking special notice of the engraved "Whistler."
Is the "Whistler" a rune? Not sure what kind of roll is required for Mandoo to try and find and/or decipher runes on a weapon. I'm going to assume Recall Knowledge is involved, probably based on Crafting or Arcana (ouch), but maybe (hopefully) Warfare Lore.
Recall Knowledge (Crafting/Arcana): 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (20) - 1 = 19
Recall Knowledge (Warfare Lore): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
And just in case the runes are written in a super tiny font or otherwise disguised, I'll throw in a Perception roll.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Mandoo reports anything he discovers to the group. He then hands the weapon to Quecksworth, saying, "Quecksworth find magic?"
While Quecksworth (and anyone else who wants to give it a go) looks over the weapon, Mandoo nudges Tyrion and says loudly enough for all to hear, "Mandoo Lizzo Darr not good with rapier. Quecksworth good with rapier, but Tyrion very good with rapier. Tyrion should have rapier."
If I have to type the word 'rapier' one more time, I think I'll scream :)
Tyrion 2.0 |
As he's finishing up looti...scaven... um ...appropriating Kaneda's belongings, Tyrion's halfling ears perk up when he hears that Mandoo found a rapier. Once Quecksworth has a chance to check for magic and possibly identify any magical properties, Tyrion asks to try it out. It's the most well-balanced weapon he's ever held. "Even if it's not magical, it's a fine weapon. If the rest of you agree with Mandoo, I'd be honored to put it to good use in this quest." He scans the group one by one to see if everyone is okay with that.
Wise Fox -- are there any checks we can make to help identify it? Since Mandoo just tried Crafting and Warfare, how about Society...
Tyrion studies the engraving 'Whistler' and tries to recall if that has any special meaning in this culture.

Lizzo Plaguestone |
”I think it looksss more like a needle than a whissstler, but i agree it ssshould go to Tyrion.”
On a whim, he lets out a loud whistle. He’s heard that sometimes magic items may respond to special commands.
After the exchange he packs up his crowbar and prepares to continue the hunt.
Tyrion 2.0 |
"I think it looksss more like a needle than a whissstler"
Tyrion considers, and then he nods in agreement. "Indeed ... Needle would be an excellent name if, alas, it wasn't already engraved with another."
Well played, Lizzo.
Mandoo |
Lizzo's whistling in an effort to trigger the rapier gives Mandoo an idea. Borrowing the rapier from Tyrion, he moves to a clear area of the cave, and holding the pommel, forcefully swishes the blade around to see if he can make it whistle through the air. He returns the blade to Tyrion when he is done with his experiment.
He then puts his equipment back on, keeping his temple sword in hand, and positions himself near the exiting passageway to surprise anything that might show up.
Quecksworth the Attendant |
Quecksworth prepares Kaneda's remains as best he knows how, before offering a short eulogy. "Alas, Master Kaneda. He died doing what I knew him to do best, giving his life in order to protect ours. I can think of no higher praise or greater better testament to a man's life than this solemn truth."
Long-lived as his kind are, the gnome is no stranger to death and realizes that now is not the time to succumb to grief or melancholy. Instead, he gets to work, casting detect magic , surveying the area and the newly-acquired blade. As he does so, he attempts to discern its nature or recall anything he may know about it.
