The half-orc winks back at Nicoleta.

I absolutely didn't realize this was you! This should be exciting, then.

@Tessa - What can I say? You and the other players bring out the best in me.

The scene from Tyrant's Grasp in particular was one that called for trying to write my best - it's the kind of scene that needs emotion and should feel poignant. I hope that I captured that when I wrote it.

GM, I have an alias for Gormak as well, but I'm working on modifiying the stats for your build rules - he was from another Skulls & Shackles game that didn't last very long.

Historically, lost limbs were the result of accidents on deck (ripped off by rope or chain) or consequences of combat (cannonball shattering, or cleaving, a limb) or an attempt to save the life of someone when gangrene had set into a wound. Despite the stories, they were pretty much never about encounters with wildlife. Those people basically didn't survive long enough to get to the surgeon.

So, I don't think the shark character was bad at all, but, that may just be me.

While “Pegleg” may be horrified/terrified at encountering at shark-like humanoid, I think it could make for interesting RP potential. His character development intent is to get over it eventually anyway, but it could be a rather bumpy road. If our DM finds it too disruptive, I can downplay it if we both get selected.

Of course, if someone else takes the trait, they may have a different reaction.

I see a lot of good character ideas here and hope more of them get fleshed out.

There are others that have dotted in, but haven't presented anything yet. There's still time!

GM Itzi:

Hey GM, This is Robert Henry, I presented Tachio earlier, I was looking at your list yesterday, and realized we didn't have a front liner in the mix yet. I wanted to make sure that we have core needs filled so I pulled Onnello out. He was another character that would fit in Skull and Shackles, so I altered him a little to present to you. His background is on the character sheet.

His main role would be frontliner, part of the Vanguard Yeah been watching too much "Black Sails" long term goals, a Master Sargent type. mechanically he will go two weapons with the sawtooth sabre's. His personality will be cautious (due to growing up on Mediogalti) but loyal to friends.

It looks like electricjokecascade is presenting a front liner. Once it becomes obvious that most of those presented on the list are 'support characters' or folks read this, yeah you know who you are :) there will probably be more posted. However, I wanted to put Onnello out there just in case we needed options.

Taicho will be a support character. If we were comparing to the five man band he would be more "the smart guy." the character is built to be comic relief, he is familiar and fun. Onnello, as a frontliner, will be more "the big guy." I won't play him dumb or mute; he would be relaxed, talkative with a very dry sense of humor.

Another contrast in the characters, I would not play Taicho romantically. I always envisioned tengu's having arranged marriages. So while he would drink and celebrate with the crew he wouldn't likely be involved in amorous activity. Onnello on the other hand would have a different view. He will have strong respect for women due to his relationship with his mother and will treat female crew members professionally and with respect, well at least as much respect as he gives the boys :)

As for which character I would rather play: Either would be awesome. I like both equally and would play either happily. I guess the answer to 'which one' is whichever one will fill a needed roll.

Ahoy!

Who I am:
Like many here, I'm a old-time hand at RPGs. Never gt the chance to play PF at a table, my friends were more into 4e/5e. I had to take some time off last year to transition to a new job/move, but I'm back here and getting my feet under me.

Who my character is:
Sovukh "Shark-Eye" is a barbarian out of Belkzen, who always felt different. One day he simply started following a calling in his heart, left his tribe, and trekked for the coast. He found himself work on a ship that worked its way down the coast, to the Shackles.

Party role, he'd be a front-liner, but more "meat-eater" than "meat-shield." ;) I'm figuring him as an Unchained Barbarian with the sharptooth archetype. I was toying with having him be a full-on natural attacker with the full Beast Totem line and Animal Fury, but I might "just" give him the Animal Fury part, and have his main thing be weapon use. (I considered a shark-based Mooncursed, but I think that has certain logistical issues before getting Hybrid Rage at level 5. "I rage!" (shark flops around helplessly on deck of ship))

Role on the ship, I see him as a sort of "right-hand man," serving as either bosun, or master-at-arms.

Change over time? Although the sea was the calling of his heart, it's still alien territory to a warrior from the plains of Belkzen. So I think he'd start out as a sort of "fish out of water," who over time acclimates to his new climate.

GM, how much of a stickler are you for adhering to regional et al. requirements for traits? Barbarians don't get Profession as a class skill, and while there's a trait that would let me pick it up for Sailor, "Belem Pirate," the catch is, I'm a long way from Minata. :)

Appreciate that you would be willing to work with it, "Pegleg". The concept is more someone who reveres sharks (sees them as the ultimate hunter) and tries to emulate them (stalking observation, circling his target, decisive strong strikes) rather than my original PFS attempt at this concept (imagine a large shark riding a slipstream spell down a dungeon hallway, it became too much of a stretch to ALWAYs be a shark).

But I also agree it could be good RP opportunity if we work together on the story. Perhaps it is through their eventual friendship that "Pegleg" moves on from his fear but from his years of caution he remembers how to effectively combat such beasts. So unless the GM chimes in against it, I think I will submit Eyan in full shortly.

Thanks.

Sovereign Court

Thanks for the chance to take another stab at Skull’s and Shackles. Hopefully you will find both myself and Eyan to be a fit.

About Me:
You mentioned mature players. Count me among them. I’ve been playing RPGs for over 35 years, first starting with Star Frontiers and AD&D. I’ve played various games over the years, though I’ve always found my way back to D&D and now Pathfinder. Other favorite systems include Shadowrun, Rifts, and recently FFG's Star Wars RPGs. I started playing on the forums a few years ago and I’ve found it to be a great way for me to play more.

I live in the Eastern US (EST) and I work in logistics. I tend to post once a day, either around Noon (EST) or 7-8 EST, though I can be on at a variety of times depending on what is going on with live games. I am currently playing in one other PBP (Rise of the Runelords) and run one (Mummy’s Mask). I am a player in a Strange Aeons PBP, but it seems to have stalled due to the GM having real life struggles. In real life I also play in three additional games that meet once a month. Along with RPGs, my wife and I tend to play board games once or twice a week.

Eyan Q. Charadon:
Since I was a kid I have had a fascination with SHARKS. My first vivid memory was seeing Jaws at a drive-in and I was hooked immediately. I have always been interested in blending two of my longest obsessions, gaming and sharks. A few years ago I came up with a concept for it and tried it out in PFS, but the format was too difficult for such a niche character, plus I focused too much on the idea of BEING a shark. Still, I couldn’t give it up.

Eyan was raised as a hunter among his aquatic elf community, spending his time in the deep open waters off the coast of Avistan. Spending days or even weeks away, he and his companions often encountered the other predators of the deep and he learned to revere what he saw as the ultimate hunter, the shark. The elves of his community would often joke that the sharks were the perfect hunting machine, they just swim, eat, and make little baby sharks. Eyan wanted to learn to be like them, and he found on some level he understood them.

During his last trip with his hunting companions, Eyan and his friends gave chase to some large tuna. The fled for the surface with the aquatic elves closing in. The hunt reached the open air, where the hunters encountered disaster. A battle raged, two ships clashed, and they would be caught in the between them. The victors were the crew of the infamous Grinning Pixie, and the mates brought the only surviving hunter, Eyan, aboard. He awoke days later to discover he was much farther south and his entire hunting party was now dead.

Eyan was grateful for his rescuers and soon became friends with some of the crew. A young female half-orc named Calisro was among them, Eyan finding it fascinating to see her enthusiasim for an ancient culture, the Ghol-Gan. Through the years Eyan began to share her obsession and he took her crusade to find and explore any sites and ruins they could find. When Calisro took over as captain, Eyan stayed on and began to research what he could for her. It was this research that led to Eyan’s second close brush with death, an unfortunate affair when he accompanied a team ashore and were captured by a party of Kuru cannibals. Captain Benarry eventually led the rescue, but not before three of the crew were “served up”. Even many years later, Eyan struggles to talk about that time and the thought of cannibals often causes him to shake.

When Captain Benarry was recalled by the Pathfinder Society, Eyan bid fairwell to his friend and his fellow crew. He headed off to continue exploring and learning all he could of the Ghol-Gan. Eventually his search would lead to a meeting, if only he had time to be more prepared.

Role and Future:
Eyan is intended to fill in holes, being versatile and support. He is capable of healing a little, fighting a little, scouting a little, and serving as an advisor of sorts at times, all when not in the water. When in the water, he will tend to be a bit more aggressive, spending time in shark form and summoning sharks for support (I will keep the summoning in check as needed, he won’t be a summoning focused character by any stretch). As for a role aboard the ship, he would best fit in as a pilot I feel. He will have ranks in Profession (sailor) and Knowledge (geography).

His personality will be quiet for a time until he gets to know his companions, but I intend to post is “thoughts” and actions even if he is not saying much. He is neutral for the most part due to his reverence of nature, but he tends tries to get along with others if for no other reason than it makes life easier. He has never seen himself as a pirate, though most of his old friends would laugh at that. He has spent so much time now on board ships, that it is almost as natural to him as swimming in the seas, and for another chance to be part of a crew, Eyan would like follow his new friends as devotedly as his old friends.

As for his future, I envision him coming out of his shell with his new friends. His devotion to nature and his reverence of sharks applies to his views of those he has not particular attachment to. When it comes to his friends and family, he follows his heart. He likely will skew towards good as the story progresses. In addition, he will attempt to steer the crew (literally if he’s the pilot) to explore the seas in hopes of finding new lore on the Cyclops and the Ghol-Gan society.

Posts:
I think some of the following posts give a good example of some of my style.

This post is an example of what I feel shows how a player can engage in a scene even if the character is not specifically engaged in the conversation. For a character that is a little shy and less vocal, you can still show you are present. The challenge is to be present but not overbearing or just noise. I feel this captures this well.

This post serves to show some more active posting. As the scout of the group, I have Edamm take charge a little more, leading the group through both actions and words. In addition, I try to give a personality to the relationship she has with her animal companion, Ponok. Finally, it also shows one aspect of the PBP that I love, the ability to use different languages. Edamm gives all her commands to Ponok in Varisian and I use RL Romanian words (or at least close to them) to give it a better feel. Google Translate is an amazing tool for this.

And last, this post gives a good example of a more engaging and significant monologue given by a character in a Curse of the Crimson Throne PBP. I clearly have a thing for Varisian characters, yes, I know.

The crunch is coming along and is being added to the profile. Thanks.

"Androgynous? Androgynous?! I'll show him androgynous! I've got over a thousand subscribers to my info-sphere site and not a single one of them thinks I'm ..." Diedre is roughly pulled away by her ship's crew before it gets ugly. :) :)

@Giant Halfling

There are some traits that I will be a stickler about. Others I'll fudge given a good enough justification. 'Captain's Blade' falls into that catagory.

@Eyan Q. Charodon, "The Shark"

I don't think that would create conflict enough to cause concern. I've got nothing against opportunities for good RP.

@Ellioti

Reading through the information for the Dawnflower Dervish, I'm going to rule that, yes, it's tied to the worship of Sarenrae.

@Holone Carynore

If you're GMT +01:00 (in France), that won't be a problem. Harmony's player is in the UK so I'm well aquainted with postings at weird hours. Looks innocently at Nikolaus de'Shade.

@Robert Henry

I'd prefer to accept just one submission per player. Taicho is a good submission, but if you'd rather submit Onnello, I'll accept him instead.

@Redblade8

As mentioned above, traits I'll fudge on a case-by-case basis. For Belem Pirate, unfortunately, I'm going to keep the requirements.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
More good submissions, all! Here's the current summary:
Concepts Presented
The following players have presented a concept, but haven't yet submitted anything.
The Emerald Duke - Shaman or Warpriest
Mr. Rattlebones - Witch
Arrannai - Changeling Shaman
Critzible - Undine Brawler
Still plenty of time for those who have dotted in to submit someone.
Oh, forgot one or two bits to your questions. I'm East Coast US, and generally I'm good for 1-2 posts during weekdays, with one more at night if I don't just fall asleep on the sofa first. (Weekends are more catch-as-catch-can.)
Anyone see another way to pick up Profession (sailor) as a class skill that I might have missed? (short of the obvious via a multiclass dip later)
EDIT: also, GM, Sovukh is half-orc, not human. :)
Cool, I'll stick with Taicho. I just wanted to make a front liner available I'm thinking we may need one. Anyway it gave me and excuse to spend the weekend refreshing an old favorite.
Current concept: CN Shark Skinwalker, Adaptive Shifter
Edited and reposted comment
Submitting for your consideration:
Silarsha
I think the personality will fit the theme. Growing up hearing stories of raiding, getting press ganged into piracy and finding that maybe it's close enough to the old tales to keep doing.
Now to think about how to tell her father . . .
Also I forgot to include how she'd change over the levels:
Spoiler:
I prefer to let things happen organically and be influenced by the game and interaction with the other players. Stats and crunch will likely stick to the basic melee support with spells theme, but depending on what happens in character, she may change as she's influenced by RP with the other characters. Things like loss and adversity, camaraderie or love should have a direct influence on how she develops.
Also regarding the CN alignment. I see this as representing her desire to be free to make her own path and a lack of interest in the moral repercussions of good or evil acts. While she's not averse to raiding and taking other property for her own profit, or acts of violence to accomplish that (as her ancestors did) she's not unnecessarily cruel or randomly attacking folks as an act of whim. She comes from a strong family, and worked with a crew that was like a family so the "betray the party for no good reason" CN trope doesn't fit her.
I considered leaving her LN, but found myself having a hard time thinking of a reason she wouldn't hop the first boat home after escaping.
(I think I've made all the needed changes, but may make a few minor tweaks if I missed something.)
Thank you. As I have further envisioned the character today, the story with "Pegleg" would certainly fit. I was leaning him away from the original inspiration, Quint from Jaws, anyways. Now I see him more and more as Hooper from Jaws. Knowledgeable about the predators but also eager to show others how much more they really are.
Whatever comes of this game, I am now happy that I got to revisit the build and have a better feel for it.
Below is information about me and the concept I would like to play, if accepted. I am based out of the Eastern Coast of the US (GMT-5) and can post everyday, multiple times a day.
About Me:
I am getting back into PbP after a bit of a hiatus as I devoted time to the purchase of my home. My first exposure to tabletop roleplaying was in the late 80s early 90s, when my Dad introduced me and my sister to it. Since then, I have participated in a variety of different games spanning 2nd, 3rd, and 5th edition D&D, White Wolf, and Pathfinder. Outside of gaming, I am a husband, and non-profit worker focused in grant compliance. I just recently began my new hobby as a woodworker and I look forward to developing some skill in this area.
Name: Sully Iron Lungs
Race: Human
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Class: Barbarian (Drunken Rager Archetype)
Group role: Front-line Melee, non-magical healer
Ship role: Carpenter/Surgeon and/or Boatswain
Background:
Raised in the Chelaxian port city of Corentyn, Sully spent much of his youth apprenticed to his wood working father. Because of this, he grew up learning the ins and outs of Corentyn's port and drydocks, where he assisted his father in building and patching the various ships in the Chelaxian naval fleet. Indeed, Sully felt at peace when working the wood that was delivered to the shipyards. However, growing up in a place like Corentyn also meant close association with many of the sailors that make up the Chalaxian Navy's ranks. This led to him to becoming very familiar with where sailors spent their time when on shore leave and the drink and games of chance that can be found in such places. Because of this, he was easily able to earn a bit of extra coin for his family but also quickly learned to enjoy the types of liquors that sailors imbibed. His luck ended one day however, when he was picked up by the Chelaxian Navy for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The wrong place being at an inn, spending some coin he had earned on some drink and entertainment, and the wrong time during a "navy recruitment drive". Drafted to Captain Hestor Arionne of the Hammer of the Nessus, one of the larger vessels, his skills were quickly put to use patching the ship...and sailors as needed. Sully felt stifled in his new position within the regimented order on the navy ship however and was never able to scrounge up enough to buy shore leave. This was likely due to his sharp tongue, which earned him consistent floggings.
Sully didn't actually see any action until the last day--hour, really--of his naval service. A pirate ship of some sort--he didn't recognize the flag or the name--with a captain mad enough to take on a Chelish man'o'war in open water. Well, not all that mad, it turned out. The pirate knew something the Captain of the Hammer didn't: the location of some volcanic spires that reached up within a few feet of the surface. The Hammer was holed before the battle could truly begin, and only the encroaching darkness prevented the pirates from picking off all the survivors in the water. As it was, they only managed to obliterate the ship's boat and its cargo of surviving officers with a few well-placed ballista shots.
Sully survived only by sheer luck and fortitude, latching on to a floating sea chest and vigorously defending it with kicks and dagger thrusts at all the fools too water-addled to see that it could only buoy a single survivor. On the second day, he did the same against curious or hungry sea-life (which were entirely more reasonable about retreating after a swift blow to the snout). The third day presented a squall that nearly did him in. The fourth...well, four days at sea with only a few mouthfuls of rainwater has a way of turning a man religious. Very religious. As in the type to pray to all manner of Gods controlling sea, weather, death, or fortune. The type to offer up promises he'd later regret.
Sully could never really be sure which deity answered when land hove into view more than a week later, but he's got a necklace of wooden and silver medallions honoring all the ones he could remember begging to just in case. Making six offerings at a time can be tedious and expensive, but it's certainly better than dying at sea. Especially with the extra gift his savior had thrown in. The sea chest, once hauled up on land and cracked open, proved to belong to the captain of the Hammer of the Nessus himself. Inside was an armored naval jacket, a cutlass, and enough gold and salable trinkets to buy passage to anywhere Sully cared to go.
Realizing that returning home would only put him back on another naval ship, Sully abandoned his old life, using his new haul to make his way to Port Peril. There he found himself saluting his good fortune at the Formidably Maid where he spotted an alluring maid motioning for him to follow her out the door and into the fortuitous night.
Description:
Under his armored, black and red Chelaxian navy coat, Sully wears the layered clothing common to people who make a living on the water. The coat itself is worn and missing the emblems of rank and identification. A heavy cavalry sword is sheathed at one hip with a dagger is stuffed into the top of one of his boots and a boarding axe stuffed into his belt. He has silver and wooden charms hanging from his left wrist, hair, and red sash that depicts a variety of deities, including Besmara, Gozreh, Desna, and Pharasma. Atop his head is a tricorne hat he won off a bedraggled pirate shortly before Sully was press ganged. When not working on a particular task, he often can be seen absentmindedly shuffling a well-worn deck of cards.
Personality:
Sully is braggadocious, but lacking much of the charm needed to get away with it. A young life spent with shipbuilders and naval recruits has taught him to be foul mouthed. He is also superstitious but brave to the point of reckless. He enjoys taking chances, especially for monetary gain, but puts surprisingly little value on coin (which he tends to run through like water). Though not a skilled orator, he often tells the tale of how he ended up in Port Peril after surviving adrift at sea for many weeks, which is how he got the name 'Iron Lungs'. Though with the amount of rum he drinks, it is understandable if one thinks his name was given to him for other reasons. He can be prone to fits of rage born from his time stranded at sea and, before that, his time under the regimented thumb of the Chelaxian Navy. Once he starts setting plane and chisel to wood however, his mood will quickly shift to one of contentment as his skilled, yet still amateur hands bring out the desires shapes and elements natural to the wood.
Why Sully wants to be a pirate:
Given the chance to live his life the why he sees fit, Sully is more than willing to do so as a pirate if it gives him the chance to earn some coin, drink, and company. The chance to lash out against the type of order that he lived under in Cheliax would be an added bonus.
Character Progression:
Starting off, he will be pretty strongly Chaotic Neutral, his shipwrecked survival at sea, separation from family and his previous life giving him a rather selfish view of the world. His skills will mainly be going towards helping his own survival and earning enough coin for his next food, drink, and pleasure. He would have a severe distrust of Chelaxian’s who express too much national pride, in fear that they might report him back to the navy. As the game progresses, and he becomes part of a crew that he can rely on and respect, his alignment will shift towards good…leveraging his rage and skill to doing what he can to protect the friends he makes along the way. I imagine he was not the only survivor for the destroyed Hammer of Nessus and he could later run into the ship’s surviving Captain.
Who I am:
Howdy, I'm Zefig. I've been playing RPGs off and on for the past 20ish years and Pathfinder for the past 10. I've played a huge amount of PFS on both sides of the table as well as playing and part-time GMing several home campaigns in that time. I moved about a year ago and am still working on finding a solid local group. I've played a handful of PBPs over the years and am currently actively involved in a couple. My time zone is EST and I typically post around midday and late evening. Weekends can be all over the place depending on how life is going but I can pretty much always find at least a little time to post.
Who my character is:
"Ahoy there, I'm Shae Rafin. I know I ain't got the years that most of you lot do, but I'd bet even odds I've sailed to more ports than the next two most combined. See, me mam's been sailing for the Pathfinders since afore I was ever born, and well, she never did stop doing anything on my account. Popped me out right on deck one stormy night and dove right into the rum after, from what I been told. It's time for me to find a crew of me own, and I don't mean a Seeker team. I belong on a ship, not deep in some dusty tomb. Me mam ain't given me much but I got her eyes, I can pick a sail off the horizon at 20 miles. And I'll poke a bolt from The Professor here," she says, patting her crossbow, "down the captain's spyglass before he knows we're there."
Shae is a female half-elf bolt ace "gunslinger." She's been part of a crew all her life but she's not the most sociable of individuals so it might take a little bit of time to warm up to a new crew. She knows her way around a ship but has the eyes to be a great lookout. I could also see her commanding the gun crews. In a party, she'd primarily be a ranged attacker with her crossbow. In terms of character growth, I see her just going where the winds take her. She's still trying to define who she wants to be. Her mother was an adventurous pathfinder, but also a barrister and a proud Chelaxian and Shae has already decided that she's far more interested in the freedom of the wind and the waves. Mechanics-wise, I doubt I'll stick with bolt ace more than 5 levels, and there are lots of different directions she could go after that depending on how she's grown and what the party ends up needing. Potential multiclass options I like the sound of include Hunter, Slayer, or Alchemist.
Itzi, I confirm human but to name a thing makes it too real. I'd rather not murder a being, suffice to call him "Doc" until such time as he gets to actually exist.
GM, I'm having a tough time making the barbarian gel in my head. May I submit him as a ranger (Freebooter archetype)?
So, I'm thinking of submitting a Neutral Undine Storm Druid, follower of Gozreh. However, before I do all the application stuff, I would like to know if you, GM Itzi, would allow the taking of the lightning sub domain under the Air domain, as it came out after storm druid did, and thus is not on the list of RAW domains, despite Air being one of them.
One minor correction for your list- Azadi is actually a kineticist, not a sorcerer. I hope that’s alright, I didn’t see any objection to occult classes.
Also, just to be certain, is the bit in my background about playing pirates with my dad and him training me in seamanship enough to merit taking the captain’s blade trait?
Yes, you can take 'Captain's Blade'.
Thanks! I’ve been down with a migraine all day but I should have Azadi’s crunch done in the next couple days.
I've got the character sheet put together for Shae now too, linked in this alias. She's a decent shot, a great lookout, and an overall competent sailor and Jack-of-all-trades with useful shipboard skills.
First entry post was here.
This looks like it’s going to be a good game. @Itzi, you seem to be a very thorough GM.
About Myself:
I started playing D&D 3.5 with a college group about 10 years ago. Since then, I’ve played in numerous campaigns with a variety of GMs and systems. I’ve played a little PbP in the past, but those games have died out fairly early due to player attrition. It really does take active players to move the game forward.
I live in the eastern time zone. I tend to post at night, though sometimes I have time in the morning or at lunch and will post also.
Character Concept:
My character concept is for a gunslinger with the siege gunner archetype. My backstory has him being born on a ship while his mother is being smuggled out of Cheliax (Besmara’s Blessing trait). I found that Tieflings are common there, and despite my general aversion to them, I think the race would be a good fit. @GM Does Tieflings fall in the monster race category? If so, I’ll likely change to human.
Backstory:
For the rest of the backstory, I’ll leave Casimir Novak to tell it himself as he sits in the Formidably Maid, sipping a beer, and talking with an interested barmaid.
”I long for the sea. It’s the only place that’s felt like home. You might say I was born to it, and you be right. Literally.
“The night I was born, my mother was being smuggled out of Cheliax on the Nightingale. My mother would never tell me what happened that night. My captain only says that if it weren’t for me, he and her, and most the crew would all be dead.
“Perhaps that’s why he stuck around once we got to the Shackles. As a smuggler, he was always in and out, but he kept my mom and I settled well enough. Not knowing my own father, he made for a good one.
“My mom got real sick and died when I was ten. Old enough for him to take me on. What I lost with my mom, I gained with the sea, and I know she will never leave me.
“The sea. There is nothing like it. It’s like inhaling freedom.
“My captain taught me the ropes. I found that I easily understood to the construction of the ship, the works of the sails, and the mechanisms of the siege weapons. Firearms intrigued me, and fell in love with the the smell of burnt gunpowder wafting with the salty sea air.
“Ten years now, I’ve sailed with him. Too long, maybe. I’ve thought about leaving a dozen times, but I’ve always shied away from it. Guess that makes me a coward.”
He stares longingly across the bar at nothing as he takes a long sip from his beer.
Character Growth:
I’d like to see starting out on his own for the first time, trying to find his way in the world. I have in my mind something like Robin (Dick Greyson) leaving Batman to become his own superhero.
Hey hey,
About Me:
I'm currently in retail. Living in CO GMT -7:00 I've been playing dnd/pathfinder for about 12 years. I started with 3.5/4th edition and quickly switched to pathfinder. I've played 5th, dark heresy, d20 modern and slew of other systems.
character concept:
My character is a Tiefling(once again as Ruin explorer said, I can rework human if they are disallowed.) Empiricist Investigator. Taking the ships surgeon and student of philosophy traits. A failed doctor who sought piracy later in his life as an escape from vindictive nobles and looking for a clientele he could help who were in no place to pin a botched surgery on him
Backstory:
Tyrlon Brasuel always considered himself a prodigy. Born to commoners in Andoran his farmer father saved all he could to send his son to Almas to train in the capital. At 17 Tyrlon graduated college and began his career as a surgeon.
Volunteering for the army, Tyrlon joined Andoran privateers in their quest to disrupt the slaving trade. He worked as a scribe and ship surgeon for ten years. Until his ship the Winds of Freedom, was sunk by a Chelexian battle ship under the command of a Hellknight named Captain Rolshoda.
Tyrlon was one of the few survivors, pulled from the waves and forced to work on Rolshoda's ship until it made port. He was then sold to a Minor Chelexian noble who treated him well despite his bondage.
The noble, Lord Dravis Crisett gave him room and board in exchange for his services. Being allowed to practice medicine and improve the lives of the servants and other slaves in House Crisett, Tyrlon never once tried to escape.
After another ten years in the house of his enemies. A dark and stormy night ended it all. Delivering Lord Crisett's second wife's first son, there were extended complications, both the woman and child died. Although Tyrlon had done his best, Lord Crisett was a paranoid man and prone to bitter anger. He blamed Tyrlon accusing him of purposefully murdering his family to get vengeance on Cheliax. He ordered him thrown into the dungeon and executed the following morning.
Tyrlon never one prone to violence but in great fear for his life, attacked his guards and managed to escape, fleeing pursuers and hounds to the port. He stole a small skiff and set sail for Port Peril, a place hopefully his life wouldn't find him.
Hi,
FWIW, I finally got a handle on Sovukh, but I changed his archetype from sharptooth to sea reaver (the "Shark-Eye" thing is now just more of a nickname than anything literal).
Later,
Ghorrin Redblade
Upon further consideration, if selected, Silarsha will be taking the Dragon Skald Archetype. It fits the touched by the sea trait, and the born to a sailing family; then turning pirate theme much better than the base Skald.
Jack Harrow: Class Features:
Racial
Child of the Sea Half-elves from a coastal region with this racial trait gain a +4 racial bonus on Swim checks as well as on Profession (sailor) and Wisdom checks to pilot a sea vessel. They also have an innate sense of direction and can never get lost at sea. This racial trait replaces the low-light vision and keen senses racial traits.
Elven Immunities Half-elves are immune to magic sleep effects and gain a +2 racial saving throw bonus against enchantment spells and effects.
Adaptability Half-elves receive Skill Focus as a bonus feat at 1st level.
Elf Blood Half-elves count as both elves and humans for any effect related to race.
Multitalented Half-elves choose two favored classes at first level and gain +1 hit point or +1 skill point whenever they take a level in either one of those classes.
Gunslinger (Mysterious Stranger)
Gunsmith At 1st level, a gunslinger gains one of the following firearms of her choice: blunderbuss, musket, or pistol. Her starting weapon is battered, and only she knows how to use it properly. All other creatures treat her gun as if it had the broken condition. If the weapon already has the broken condition, it does not work at all for anyone else trying to use it. This starting weapon can only be sold for scrap (it’s worth 4d10 gp when sold). The gunslinger also gains Gunsmithing as a bonus feat.
Grit A gunslinger makes her mark upon the world with daring deeds. Some gunslingers claim they belong to a mystical way of the gun, but it’s more likely that the volatile nature of firearms simply prunes the unlucky and careless from their ranks. Whatever the reason, all gunslingers have grit. In game terms, grit is a fluctuating measure of a gunslinger’s ability to perform amazing actions in combat. At the start of each day, a gunslinger gains a number of grit points equal to her Wisdom modifier (minimum 1). Her grit goes up or down throughout the day, but usually cannot go higher than her Wisdom modifier (minimum 1), though some feats and magic items may affect this maximum. A gunslinger spends grit to accomplish deeds (see below), and regains grit in the following ways.
Critical Hit with a Firearm: Each time the gunslinger confirms a critical hit with a firearm attack while in the heat of combat, she regains 1 grit point. Confirming a critical hit on a helpless or unaware creature or on a creature that has fewer Hit Dice than half the gunslinger’s character level does not restore grit.
Killing Blow with a Firearm: When the gunslinger reduces a creature to 0 or fewer hit points with a firearm attack while in the heat of combat, she regains 1 grit point. Destroying an unattended object, reducing a helpless or unaware creature to 0 or fewer hit points, or reducing a creature that has fewer Hit Dice than half the gunslinger’s character level to 0 or fewer hit points does not restore any grit.
A mysterious stranger is a force to be reckoned with. Instead of using her Wisdom to determine the number of grit points she gains at the start of each day, she uses Charisma. This ability works in all other ways like the Gunslinger’s grit class feature.
Deeds Gunslingers spend grit points to accomplish deeds. Most deeds grant the gunslinger some momentary bonus or effect, but there are some that provide longer-lasting effects. Some deeds stay in effect as long as the gunslinger has at least 1 grit point. The following is the list of base gunslinger deeds. A gunslinger can only perform deeds of her level or lower. Unless otherwise noted, a deed can be performed multiple successive times, as long as the appropriate amount of grit is spent to perform the deed.
Deadeye At 1st level, the gunslinger can resolve an attack against touch AC instead of normal AC when firing beyond her firearm’s first range increment. Performing this deed costs 1 grit point per range increment beyond the first. The gunslinger still takes the –2 penalty on attack rolls for each range increment beyond the first when she performs this deed.
Gunslinger’s Dodge At 1st level, the gunslinger gains an uncanny knack for getting out of the way of ranged attacks. When a ranged attack is made against the gunslinger, she can spend 1 grit point to move 5 feet as an immediate action; doing so grants the gunslinger a +2 bonus to AC against the triggering attack. This movement is not a 5-foot step, and provokes attacks of opportunity. Alternatively, the gunslinger can drop prone to gain a +4 bonus to AC against the triggering attack. The gunslinger can only perform this deed while wearing medium or light armor, and while carrying no more than a light load.
Focused Aim At 1st level, as a swift action, the mysterious stranger can spend 1 grit point to gain a bonus on all firearm damage rolls equal to her Charisma modifier (minimum 1) with all firearm attacks she makes until the end of her turn. This deed replaces the quick clear deed.
Traits and Drawback
Larger Than Life You wield firearms with truly terrifying menace. When you use the Intimidate skill on a creature while wielding a firearm, you are considered one size category larger than your actual size.
Extremely Fashionable Whenever you are wearing clothing and/or jewelry worth at least 150 gp (and not otherwise covered in gore, sewage, or other things that mar your overall look), you gain a +1 trait bonus on Bluff, Diplomacy, and Intimidate checks. One of these skills (your choice) is a class skill for you.
Memorable When you modify a character’s attitude with the Diplomacy or Intimidate skill, the attitude change lasts 1-1/2 times longer than it otherwise would. Whenever you create a fear or mind-affecting effect that imposes a penalty or bonus with a duration of at least 2 rounds, it lasts 1 additional round after it would normally end.
Called Once per day upon rolling a natural 1 on an attack roll, you may reroll the die and take the second result instead.
Eye for Plunder You gain a +1 trait bonus on Appraise and Perception checks to find concealed or secret objects (including doors and traps). In addition, you begin the campaign with a selection of mundane trade goods worth 50 gp that you were able to scrounge together during your first day on the ship.
Attached You have a strong emotional attachment to a person or object that you’re terrified of losing. Whenever the object of your attachment is either threatened, in danger, or in someone else’s possession, you take a –1 penalty on Will saves and a –2 penalty on saves against fear effects. If the person or object to which you’re attached is ever lost, killed, or destroyed, exchange this drawback for the Doubt drawback.
Jack Harrow: Backstory:
Jack Harrow was born to Edward Tilly and an unknown elven woman on a pirate ship. He was named Jack after his uncle, Edward's brother. After his mother's demise, Jack grew up in a tumultuous household full of outlaws at Shipwreck Cove. He had spent most of his youth unsure whether Edward Tilly was really his parent, frequently referring to him as "The-Man-Who-Might-Be-Father". Despite Jack's resentment of him, he respected the fact that Tilly was always there for him when he needed him most, such as when he nearly got his hand cut off by the pirate Rusty Knickers or when Jack was almost sold into slavery by Captain Lucy Graven. Jack was determined to follow in his father's footsteps and become a captain of a ship, rather than just some ordinary pirate like the majority of his relatives (explaining his insistence on being referred to as "Captain" well into adulthood).
As a teenager, Jack served as a cabin boy on several pirate ships, including the Troubadour of Captain Tilly. As a member of Tilly's crew, he visited many countries and ports. However, he became fed up with his hectic life in a pirate family. One night, he snuck by candlelight into the study to consult the Pirata Codex and, coming upon a section on freedom and the need for pirates to make their own decisions, decided, he was completely justified in running away. He packed a bag, stole his father's compass and escaped out the window. Jack stowed away aboard a merchant ship to reach the Mwangi Expanse. His seafaring experience made it easy to join a new crew. Eventually, a rather unfortunate encounter and misunderstanding with some infamous Shackles pirates forced him to abandon the pirate life, flee and take employment in the Chelish Trading Company. After five years of faithful service, during which he sailed across all the Seas, he was given command of the Wicked Wench, a ship owned by Cutler Beckett, the CTC Director for Western Garund. As Beckett's employee, Jack searched for the mystical island of Kirma and its legendary treasure. When he found it, he decided to betray Beckett and keep the island and its inhabitants safe from Beckett and his slave traders. Later Beckett contracted him to transport a cargo of slaves to Westcrown, Jack chose to liberate them and finally steal the Wench from Beckett. However, Beckett's men managed to find him and branded him as a pirate (once again), while the Wench was set aflame and sunk. Jack retaliated and captured the Wench's sister, the Blue Maiden and renamed her the Black Pride and began the pirate life anew. Soon Jack Harrow became one of the Free Captains and a member of the Pirate Council.
Throughout his years as an infamous pirate of the Shackles, Jack Harrow embarked on many adventures, several of which involved gaining items of unique value. On the other side, he often seemed cursed and lost most treasures faster than he could find new ones. Jack was captain of the Black Pride for four years. But when he was after the treasure of Dead's Isle, Jack lost the Pride in a mutiny led by his first mate, Horice Barbooza. A few months later, with the help of some still loyal crew members, Jack retrieved the Black Pride and killed Barbooza, thereby becoming its captain once again.
Over the course of time, Captain Jack Harrow became a center of intrigue as myths and legends have been told of his exploits. Most of these tales, however, were exaggerations, or even fabrications embellished by Jack himself to bolster his reputation. Despite his dishonesty and many deceptions, Jack Harrow did embark on a number of grand and thrilling adventures, some involving the supernatural, pirate lore, magic, and journeys in discovering hidden treasures. Indeed, Jack's ultimate ambition was to have the freedom to sail the seas as a legendary pirate for eternity.
Desna's favor is not with Jack. Two years ago a Kraken attacked the Black Pride and sunk it. Jack had lost her again. While he was used to loosing and winning, this was too much for him. He indulged in the rum and the stories of Jack Harrow faded. He made ends meet as a simple, drunken seaman.
Today he finds himself relatively well off when he got his share of his last voyage’s plunder, and decided to spend a few of his hard-won coins at the Formidably Maid, a popular pirate tavern in Port Peril. Because of his constant state of grogginess, however, he never saw the miscreants who slipped something into his drink, knocking him out cold...
Development Plan and Party Role:
Gunslinger (Mysterious Stranger) 1, Unchained Rogue (Thug) 4, Slayer (Turncoat) 15
The gunslinger level is mostly for the flavor and I won't pursue gunslinging as a major occupation, but I want the character to be able to switch-hit if necessary.
Role: Secondary melee, Secondary ranged, Social, Debuffer, Trapfinder
His father's compass is secretely a wayfinder, but it takes considerable effort (read experience) and invest (read 500 gp) to unlock its potential.
about me:
I'm in Central European Time zone. I'm a space engineer working a deskjob with access to Paizo during lunch break. I commute by train and have good experience with posting from my smart phone during the train ride.
I'm applying, a) because pirates are awesome and b) because you promised a fast-paced game and this would be something new to me. You can look at my profile for my rap sheet. I'm particularly fond of Thomas Riverdancer and his campaign.
Sent my submission directly to Itzi but figured I should post here too. May I present Marisann, battle dancer brawler.
"So, let me ask me fair lass, be this ship ONLY for the ladies?" the lithe elf speaks up. "I mean, there was a time Calisro and I had to rescue some of the Pixies' crew from a Calistran church, so I had to look the part. And we elves are generally fluid with ideas of gender anyways. But if I don the bodice again, and get tossed overboard or a big wave hits, that crew will likely see right though me disguise."
The elf takes sip of wine before continuing with a large grin. "Or, well, at least they be seeing through the bodice!"
Trying out the character's voice. Need to see how the personality fits. Thanks.
Hunh. Wouldn't have grouped gunslingers as skill characters, but, hey. Inquisitor? Sure. Investigator? Sure. Even Ranger. All dependent on build, really, I guess.
It is an apparently under-represented group, though.
And now Tessa's got everyone RPing in the recruitment thread. sigh
I must do something with that girl.
Anyways ...
I only grouped gunslingers as support because they're not usually a front-liner. It could probably be debated what the categories really are, in fact. In any case, the categories aren't hard and fast. And my primary focus on choosing characters isn't party balance. I look for characters that are going to add to the story and play well with each other.
The challenge of any given encounter is the easiest part of the AP to adjust. Character chemistry - in my mind - is the most difficult.
... just an insight into what I look for.
Probably should have put that in the first post ...
Covering her mouth and feigning innocence, Tessa lets a "Whoops." go before slowly backing away.
With a heavy accent, Uganda tries to make sense of all of the names.
if you want us to stop, just say it.
Uranda wrote:
Smiling at the banter, Taicho's beak drops when he hears Uranda's response. He moves closer to the Alchemist, clearing his voice he speaks softly ”Ukuthi uyazi nje, kusho ukuthi banamabhokisa amahle”
Polyglot:
Just so you know, it means they have a nice buttocks
Dispite being around pirates for a while now Uranda tries to maintain a level of politeness similar to that with which he was raised.
"By the breath of the ancestors, Ma'am I am very sorry. I did not know you were speaking in bawdy jest. Please accept my apologies."
Uranda bows his head and avoid eye contact.
"Thank you Taicho."
