bite 3: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
bite 4: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
#1-4 rush Dellan, the nearest warm blood they can smell. Dellan swings at #1 but isn't able to connect. #1, #3, and #4 land bites on him (3 damage).
dellan fort: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
dellan fort: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
dellan fort: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Dellan fights off the poison of the first two, but the third is too much for his system to take all at once.

Argus Coalheart |
Argus steps in and swipes at one of the spiders crawling over Ray, since he's closer.
I can't see all the numbers, so I'll attack either of the spiders that are not #11, it's easy pickings for someone to deal 1 damage to and kill lol.
Glaive: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
GM Mike |
Argus expertly slices #10 in half, even as it is crawling up Ray's leg.
One round down, half the spiders dead.
Ray needs to make a DC10 fort save.

Raybin Butcher |

Rawr!
Shaking off the worst of the poison's effects, Ray swipes the hammer down on #7.
Hammer: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
lulz
GM Mike |
Ray feels much better, and then proves it when he squashes #7 in a spray of nasty goo.
Need a DC10 fort save from Dellan too!

Dellan Karela |
Fort: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Dellan is having a very bad day.
I assume that's another 1 Str damage.
He feels the muscles in his arms begin to weaken, making it difficult to keep up his shield and mace.
Mace vs #2: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Super. That's probably a miss.
GM Mike |

bite 2: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
bite 3: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
bite 4: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Dellan is covered in spiders, and they have tasted blood. He takes three more quick bites (3 damage) and feels the poison seep into the wounds.
dellan fort: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
dellan fort: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
dellan fort: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13

Glaive vs #1: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Butts.
GM Mike |
Amanteia continues to be mostly useless, but at least she managed to drop one of the spiders.

Dellan Karela |
Fort: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Dellan finally shrugs off the venom before it can cripple him entirely. He steps back and swipes at the wounded spider.
Mace vs 2: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Of all the times! I won't even bother to confirm that.
Raybin Butcher |
"Derpderpderp," says the dumb player controlling someone significantly smarter than him, and takes his turn now.
Ray slides into position on the other side of Dellan but can't quite reach the flank. He swings once with the warhammer.
Hammer vs #3: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
GM Mike |
bite: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
One spider remains! It bites Dellan again...
Dellan fort: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
... but this time he resists the poison.

Ray (25/27 hp, 1 str damage)
Dellan (27/34 hp, 2 str damage)
Spider #4 (0 damage)
Argus (40/40 hp)

Argus Coalheart |
Argus steps into a flank and tries to murder the last spider attacking his ally.
Glaive: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 7 + 2 = 15
Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
UGH
Dellan Karela |
Instead of continuing to flail around feebly, Dellan unleashes a channel, opting the spider out of it.
Excluding the spider and using Purifying Channel on it.
Channel Energy (heal): 2d6 ⇒ (5, 6) = 11 Will DC 16 Half
lulz nevermind it ded
GM Mike |
The spider dies in a very undignified manner. And everyone is back to full (y'know, other than the strength damage)!
COMBAT OVER
Here's the room description again, just because:
This large, dim room contains a dozen wooden desks topped with hinged lids, each with stacks of paper and well-used inkwells. The desks are arranged in neat rows. A lectern stands at the front, facing the desks. Spider webs stretch from desk to desk and up to the walls and ceilings. A hall leads out to the east, while wooden doors stand in the north and west walls.
Raybin Butcher |
Ray checks over Dellan's wounds.
Heal: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
He nods. "Yup. Latrodectism. Muscle weakness eventually leading to paralysis. They pumped a helluva lot into you. You're lucky to still be standing." He gives the young man an appraising look. "Afraid you'll have to sleep it off." He pauses, then adds, "Sorry, kid."
He looks like he was going to say more, but shakes his head and walks off.
Dellan Karela |
Dellan stares at Raybin with an unreadable expression for several moments before coming back to himself. "Wait. I think... Give me a moment. I feel... something."
He drops to his knees, ignoring the spiderwebs clinging to his armored coat and shield, and grasps Pharasma's holy symbol around his neck. These days, every time he casts a spell or channels positive energy, he wonders if it will actually work. He wonders when she'll finally abandon him like everyone else in his life has.
Nevertheless, he prays. He sends his whispered plea to the Lady of Graves to heal his toxin-laden muscle tissue and restore his strength.
Casting lesser restoration.
Str Dmg Healed: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Raybin Butcher |
Ray looks pointedly away from the friendly exchange and scours the room and the doors here, particularly the door the creature went through. "Should probably mention the man-spider that turned into a spider swarm and crawled under this door," he says, motioning toward the west door.
Perception vs Desks: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
Perception vs West Door: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
Perception vs North Door: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
Argus Coalheart |
Argus blinks in alarm. "Yes, you p-p-probably should." He steps up to the west door. He knows he's not terribly perceptive, so he waits for the others to do their searching and gathering up by the west door before moving onward.
Dellan Karela |
Dellan looks over the lectern before they move on.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
He finds Jimmy Hoffa. Oh--no, wait. That's just an old candy wrapper. Ew, why is it sticky...?
He then joins the others at the west door.
Raybin Butcher |
Ray waits at the north door. Seeing Dellan and Argus waiting at the west, he furrows his brow. "Uh, guys? We're not actually going that way, are we? You do realize it's probably a trap, right? Whatever the hells that thing was, it looked at me and it was smart. I'm smart. I'd lead my enemies through a bunch of deathtraps I built when they chase me after my baby spiders weakened the s@#@ out of them. You really wanna go that way?"
Argus Coalheart |
Argus shrugs. "R-relax, Raybin. There is no need to be afraid of a few traps. But we m-must clear this place of abominations for Saghira, that was the deal."
Raybin Butcher |
Ray shakes his head. "It's not fear, I'm just not stupid enough to chase an enemy that's ready for me. And I'm pretty sure the deal only involved her lackey, not every freakazoid running around this place."
Argus Coalheart |
Argus considers the occultist's words with pursed lips. "Fair point, M-master Butcher. We will go the other w-way for now. But if it ends up that w...we need to go this way, that gives the c-c-creature more time to prepare for us."
He moves to the north door. Once everyone has gathered up, he opens it.
Raybin Butcher |
Ray shrugs. "Noted.
He readies his warhammer and blasting rod, wondering if he'll get a chance to use the new psychic magic he's got rolling around in his brain before he dies horribly in this gods-forsaken wasteland of a plane.
Dellan Karela |
Dellan follows the paladin's suit without hesitation. He readies his shield but leaves his other hand free in case he needs to cast a spell.
GM Mike |
Ray doesn't find any locks or traps on the doors, but he does find something surprising inside the desks that he checks: even though it is obvious from the outside that the desks are only a few inches deep, when he opens a desk lid and peers in, the bottom appears gone, instead extending into indefinite darkness. If he checks multiple desks, they all exhibit this effect.
There's, uh, no actual information to gain here, other than I guess you realize it's an illusion?
GM Mike |
init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
Argus throws open the door. This long room has a narrow table with several comfortable-looking chairs around it. A few shelves contain pottery, serving dishes, and heavy books. Doors lead out from each direction, including several doors standing in the east wall.
Two of the chairs are occupied by wyrwoods, but there is something... wrong about them. After a moment, Argus realizes what is is: they each have two additional forearms and hands grafted onto their elbows.
They leap to their feet when the door opens. One of them speaks, and its voice has an odd, lilty quality to it that reminds you of a clarinet. "Did Salighara send you? Die!"
Amanteia init: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29
Argus init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Dellan init: 1d20 ⇒ 19
Raybin init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Argus (40/40 hp)
Wallinar (0 damage)
Frellyh (0 damage)
Dellan (34/34 hp)
Ray (27/27 hp, 1 str damage)
Bold may act.
GM Mike |
will 1: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
will 2: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
The male wyrwood throws his many hands to his eyes and screams. The female does not seem to be affected.
ROUND 1
Amanteia (29/29 hp)
Argus (40/40 hp)
Wallinar (0 damage, blind [4 rounds])
Frellyh (0 damage)
Dellan (34/34 hp)
Ray (27/27 hp, 1 str damage)
Bold may act.
Argus Coalheart |
"What is with all the extra limbs on this plane?" Argus grumbles as he steps into the room and to the side, glaive drawn. He addresses the un-blinded wyrwood. "You may leave this battle with your lives, yet. Take your sightless companion and flee the Scriptorium. You do not need to suffer for your mistress's foolishness."
He doubts his words will have any effect, but they must be said. He readies himself to halt the approach of the wyrwood.
Readied action to trip with the glaive if the wyrwood tries to move toward Argus or an ally.
Trip Attempt: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
GM Mike |
W attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
damage: 1d8 ⇒ 1
concealment: 1d100 ⇒ 65
F attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
damage: 1d8 ⇒ 2
The female wyrwood laughs at Argus's little speech, grabs one of the two heavy crossbows off the table, steps away from the table, and fires it at Amanteia. The bolt sails wide.
The male wyrwood, obviously distressed by his sudden lack of vision, fumbles around the table for the other crossbow, aims it in the direction he saw Amanteia before she blinded him, and fires. If Amanteia hadn't been dodging the other bolt, he would have had no chance, but in a tremendous stroke of luck, his bolt grazes her shoulder (1 damage).
ROUND 1
Amanteia (28/29 hp)
Argus (40/40 hp)
Wallinar (0 damage, blind [4 rounds])
Frellyh (0 damage)
Dellan (34/34 hp)
Ray (27/27 hp, 1 str damage)
Bold may act.
Dellan Karela |
Dellan steps into the room, and his eyes fill with a silvery energy as he gazes at the female wyrwood. He speaks in a booming, commanding voice as he points to the male wyrwood. "Kill him."
Casting murderous command on Frellyh. Not likely it's going to work (DC 15 Will save) but man would it be great if it did.
Raybin Butcher |
Ray glances at Dellan, then steps into the room on the opposite side of the oracle. For the moment, he feels like giving the kid a wide berth.
He points his blasting rod at Wallinar and fires off a ray of flame at him.
Spending 1 point of evocation focus to cast an Energy Ray (fire) at the male wyrwood.
Ranged Touch: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 5 + 2 = 12
Fire Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 2) = 5
Ugh. I mean, I get +2 for attacking a blinded target but I still dunno if a 12 will hit touch AC.
GM Mike |
Frellyh returns Dellan's gaze and chuckles. "We are not yours to command," it says in its weird, reedy voice. Ray has better luck, as the fire bolt slams into Wallinar. He turns his head blindly around in a near panic.
ROUND 2
Amanteia (28/29 hp)
Argus (40/40 hp)
Wallinar (5 damage, blind [4 rounds])
Frellyh (0 damage)
Dellan (34/34 hp)
Ray (27/27 hp, 1 str damage)
Bold may act.
Argus Coalheart |
Argus gives Dellan an uncomfortable look. He didn't know the lad could do that...
He turns back to the female wyrwood with a hard gaze. "You were offered redemption. It will not be offered again." He steps forward and lashes out with the glaive.
Glaive: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
UGH freaking minimum damage.
GM Mike |
F SS: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
F SS: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
concealment: 1d100 ⇒ 15
Amanteia's acid sails wide of Frellyh, but it distracts her long enough that she takes Argus's glaive right in the shoulder.
Frellyh drops the crossbow and steps forward while drawing her short sword, then swings it at Argus. He brings up a gauntleted forearm and blocks it, drawing a sneer from Frellyh. She then speaks to Wallinar.
Wallinar's panic seems to lessen and he takes a step toward Raybin (not a 5' step because the chairs make it difficult terrain, but Argus won't get an AOO because the table provides cover). He swings a vicious strike directly at Ray's head. The occultist is so surprised that he barely has time to duck out of the way. Several of his hairs are now significantly shorter.
ROUND 2
Amanteia (28/29 hp)
Argus (40/40 hp)
Wallinar (5 damage, blind [3 rounds])
Frellyh (5 damage)
Dellan (34/34 hp)
Ray (27/27 hp, 1 str damage)
Bold may act.
Raybin Butcher |
Ray grunts irritably. "Ah-ah. No helping each other on the exam, that's cheating." He swings the hammer at the wyrwood's head.
Warhammer vs FF: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 6 + 2 = 18
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
WHY BABY JEEBUS
Dellan Karela |
Oh. Right. Constructs.
Feeling pretty stupid, Dellan moves up and draws his sickle as he goes, moving into a flank with Argus.
He has just enough movement to go wide and avoid an AoO from Frellyh.
MW Sickle: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 6 + 2 = 16
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Blech. My guess is that won't do it.
GM Mike |
I was about to say that's not a flank with Argus since he has a reach weapon, but then I looked at his sheet. He has a gauntlet. Carry on :)
Both Ray and Dellan land their blows, but they're gonna have to hit harder than that, or this is going to be a very long fight.
ROUND 3
Amanteia (28/29 hp)
Argus (40/40 hp)
Wallinar (8 damage, blind [3 rounds])
Frellyh (9 damage)
Dellan (34/34 hp)
Ray (27/27 hp, 1 str damage)
Bold may act.
Argus Coalheart |
Argus steps back and slashes at Frellyh again, hoping to finally put her down and end this debacle.
Glaive: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 7 + 2 = 28
Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
OOF, one away from a crit.
