Dellan waits patiently outside until he's called. He isn't feeling particularly up to beauty and music at the moment.

Amanteia continues to study the dais, as the magic it is emanating is quite strange.

"Raybin. I can't make heads or tails of this. The harp is playing on its own, so I expected the dais, or at least the harp, to be magical. But the aura I'm picking up is too strong for a simple spell such as that."

She moves on to look at the shabby drum.

"This is a goblin fire drum. If you play it competently, it makes fire effects in the area more powerful. It can also spotaneously ignite flammable things, so typical goblin carelessness."

Ray slips the drum into the party's packs when Argus isn't looking. Hopefully by the time the paladin realizes it's in their stuff, they'll be too far down the Dead Roads for him to make much of a fuss. "Dangerous indeed. But we may find a use for it."

He moves over to the dais and begins gently running his fingertips across the harp, the dais, and the stool, reaching out with his psychic senses for even the faintest strands of aether present.

Behind the screen:

Ray feels a faint but unmistakably powerful menacing lingering energy on the dais; he recognizes it immediately as Vithiz. Ray's eyes shoot upward so only the bloodshot whites are visible, and his body goes rigid.

The gaunt creature approaches the dais, where a small orchestra of instruments are autonomously playing a jaunty melody. Its grasshopper face twists in a grimace and it quickly gathers all the instruments in its bifurcated arms and places them on the wall. All the instruments, that is, except for the harp. Its eyes flash deviously as it returns to the dais and begins chanting and waving its arms. A billowy white energy rises from the dais, just as a sickly green, sinewy energy emerges from the creature's hands. It pulls the white into the green and weaves them together expertly into a swirling sphere of mingling magic. It releases the sphere and it flows back into the dais. Satisfied, the creature turns and leaves the room.

Ray comes back to himself with a start. After a moment of catching his breath, he realizes he knows what's wrong with the dais.

There was indeed a harmless spell on the dais that caused the instruments to play by themselves. Vithiz corrupted the magic with his own; if anyone stops the harp music or adds another instrument to the dais, it will summon a ill-intentioned creature. No one in the party is strong enough to undo this tampering, but Kishokish surely is and will probably be appreciative of a heads-up.

Ray wipes the thin sheen of sweat from his brow. "We should tell Kishokish about this. Vithiz put a nasty spell-trap on it. Stopping the harp will summon a nasty customer of some kind. None of us can dismantle this enchantment, I think, but Kishokish probably could."

Once he's satisfied the group has explored the entire house for danger, he goes to Kishokish to report their progress and make sure they haven't missed anywhere.

You return to Kishokish and give your report, including the summon trap that Vithiz placed on the dais in the music room. Kishokish is delighted. "Your help has been indispensable. Not only have you saved me and my manor, but you've prevented an attempt at a sahkil invasion of the Boneyards. As I mentioned before, you may keep whatever you have found by way of reward, including the ballroom key." He proceeds to explain the key's special properties (Nine-Eaves Key). He digs into a pouch on his belt and pulls out a small pearl and hands it over. "This will help the magically inclined among you on long days." (Pearl of power (2nd level))

Finally, he pulls out his stamp and uses it on each of you.

"Thank you again. The Boneyards are in your debt. Good luck on your journey."

As you turn to leave, Kishokish exclaims. "Oh! How could I forget? Congratulations on reaching level 4!"

Ray tips a nonexistent hat to the psychopomp. "I'd say it was a pleasure, but..." He shrugs. "Thanks for your help. Considering all you've done for us, I don't think you're in our debt. Let's call it a wash, yeah? Take care of yourself, Kishokish. Next time I see you, it'll probably be to get ushered off to the Great Beyond, so please don't take offense when I say I hope we don't see each other again for a long time."

Dellan stands before Kishokish for several awkward moments, fishing for the right words. His first instinct is to ask Kishokish all the questions roiling around in his head he wishes he could ask the Gray Lady Herself, but what would be the point? It isn't like Kishokish is on a first-name basis with Her. He surely wouldn't know any better than Dellan himself.

Finally the oracle's shoulders droop. "Thank you for everything, Kishokish. I am glad we could help." He shuffles off to join the others.

Okay! Two down, one to go; Salighara's Scriptorium is the last stop on the Dead Roads to get a stamp. You recall from talking with Umble and Thoot that it will take you about 8 hours on foot to get there. Do you want to leave now or spend the day at Nine-Eaves and leave after resting?

Dellan is too caught up in his own thoughts and misses the glance. He shrugs noncommittally, wandering off toward the greenhouse. He stares at the chalkboard with the numbers on them, feeling useless.

Mictena is still out there, hunting us. If she finds us--no. Our luck has not been that good. When she finds us... what can I do? I cannot fight a servant of Pharasma. It would break my oath to Her. But I have an oath to my fr... well. My allies, as well. What do I do? Run around bandaging wounds while they do all the real work? Mictena is a servant of the Gray Lady; she is not evil. Argus will have a hard time wounding her. Ray is a brilliant mind, but not exactly a sound warrior. Amanteia will likely have the best chance against Mictena--unless she has resistance to magic, of course. They will need all the weapons to bear they can get, but... I just. I cannot do it. And I am going to get them killed. Look how one sakhil ripped me apart from the inside...

He blinks rapidly to hold the tears back. Those will do him no good. They will only show how weak he really is.

Bob pecks him again, hard enough to draw blood this time.

You are pathetic." He spits on the ground in front of the occultist. "You do not care about anyone but yourself, and getting your own hide out of here. You do not care about Amanteia, or Argus, and you sure as the Hells do not care about me, so f~++ off."

For a moment, Ray stands there, babbling to himself, uttering nonsense gibberish. To Bob's deepest displeasure, it's in Celestial.

He repeats the words, louder and louder, until they reach a crescendo and he slams against the doors of the greenhouse, wanting to tear the words out of Dellan's flesh. [color=blue]"YOU FAILED MOTHER YOU FAILED MOTHER YOU FAILED MOTHER"[/color]

Suddenly the words fade, the images of the unknown Void fade, and Ray falls on his ass, breath hitching in his chest.

He turns to Bob, who looks deeply uncomfortable, and says, [color=blue]"F#%%."[/color]

Argus, hearing shouting from downstairs, hustles down from Kishokish's room to see Dellan leaning hard against the greenhouse doors, and something pounding hard to get out on the other side. A screaming voice that sounds suspiciously like Raybin suddenly cuts short.

Argus turns in shock to confront the oracle. "What have you done?!"

Now that the screaming has stopped, Dellan waits a beat, then steps away from the doors. "I judged his actions to be petty and showed him so." He shrugs. "He's fine. He'll live." He puts a finger to his nose, sees the blood on it, and scowls. "That will probably heal crooked." He sighs, touches his face, and sends positive energy into himself to heal the wound.

He touches the nose gingerly. Yes, it is definitely at a slight angle now. Ah, well.

Argus throws open the doors to see Raybin on the floor, eyes wide with shock and welling up with tears. He looks back to Dellan, whose face still holds a trickle of blood from his broken nose, then back down to Ray.

"I am n-not going to ask what happened," he says coldly, "but let me m-make one thing abundantly clear to both of you. We do not strike our allies for any reason. We do not attack their minds or bodies with spells for any reason. We are h... here to h-help each other, not drag each other down with petty squabbles." He pulls Raybin up off the floor, but doesn't let go of his arm. Instead, he roughly grabs Dellan's arm and pulls it toward him so their hands are inches apart. "Apologize, shake, and be done with this idiocy. You insult both your comrades and our host, brawling in his house like brigands."

Dellan glares incredulously at Argus and opens his mouth to argue, but something in the half-orc's glare quells the words. He stares hard at Ray for several seconds, then grabs his hand. "I am sorry," he says through gritted teeth.

Dellan gathers himself up and says, "When you have need of your healing puppet, he will be in the dining room." He storms off, a little more stompy than he intended.

Argus pinches the bridge of his nose. "Guess I should have known better. N-no more pep talks from you, Raybin." He claps the occultist on the shoulder, hoping to convey there are no hard feelings, though he feels his shoulder tense up beneath his hand. "Let's go get some r... rest."

He goes to Kishokish (unless he followed the shouting to the downstairs) and bows slightly. "Apologies for my companions' behavior in your home, Master Kishokish. W-we have all been under quite a lot of stress these past f... few days, and they are not taking it w-well."

Amanteia descends the stairs after spending an hour freshening up. She immediately senses the tension in the room.

"What'd I miss?"


Behind the screen:

Argus finds Kishokish in the kitchen, where he is busy cleaning up after the nucol that nearly destroyed the room. He is sorting through his mismatched dishes, discarding broken ones with a difficulty that suggests that each plate and bowl has sentimental significance to him.

He waves off Argus's penitence. "No apologies necessary, child. I cannot imagine the strain that you are under. And pardon me for saying so, but you say 'they' as if it is not difficult on you as well. Admitting to struggle is not weakness." He considers for a moment. "Do not forget, you overcame a potent foe and his minions to free me; you could not have done that without working together. Something tells me that you will overcome much more on your journey ahead. It will not be easy, but nothing worthwhile ever is."

Argus nods appreciatively. "You are m-most wise, Kishokish. I thank you for your counsel. I did not m... mean to imply I was unfazed. The battle with Vithiz was difficult. Though... it was other challenges along the w-way so far that concern me more. My w-w-will was tested here and found wanting. That is something on w... which I can work. But my adherence to the Code... that is something that cannot falter. Much of my power comes directly from the Et-ternal Maiden. Forsaking my vows to her, even for what seems like a good r-r-reason, could result in a fall from grace that would not only threaten my life, but the l-lives of the companions I've sworn to protect. It's... trying. I w...was not always the kindest man in my life, or the most pious. Faith and altruism came l-l-late in life, and they are mantles I am s-still getting used to. I just hope I don't bring us to ruin before I do."

He ponders for a moment, then gives a small bow. "I have some w-writing to do before I bed down. Thank you again for your w-words, Master Kishokish."

Ray blinks at Amanteia, then looks around the room. He still looks like he's on the verge of tears, but he blinks them back. "Uh. Not much. Dellan and I got into it. We worked it out. Sort of." He looks around again, as if trying to sort out why he came into this room. "I'm gonna go sleep in the ballroom. Night."

He wanders off dreamily, like a waking sleeper trying to snatch details from a fading dream.

Dellan rolls out his bedroll in a corner of the dining hall. He can hear Argus and Kishokish talking in the other room. He finds the psychopomp's voice soothing. He knows not all the psychopomps are so pleasant, but it's nice to meet one who is.

He's surprised to realize he actually feels better. He's still angry, sure, but it's better than wallowing in self-pity. Better by far. Self-pity is useless; anger he can use. He stares up at the ceiling until he eventually falls asleep.

Behind the screen:

Dellan tosses and turns for some time, unable to calm his mind enough to drift off. After a few hours, he finally feels slumber approaching.

Just before he drifts off (or is it just after?), a familiar (but recently noticeably absent) voice whispers to him. The voice is strained, as if it is difficult for it to manifest in this place. "The psychic is right. You are supremely arrogant to presume you know the will of Pharasma. You w---" The voice fades to nothing.

Dellan bolts upright, the blood drained from his face, staring into the gray, uncertain light of... not-day? What was that? Who was that? Did he dream it? He swallows hard, and lies back down, wondering if he'll be able to fall back asleep now. The words run over and over through his head. You are supremely arrogant to presume you know the will of Pharasma...

He closes his eyes and mentally scrambles frantically back toward sleep.
