"We'll do our best" Kolgradd promises solemnly.

Did we learn the Beckon the Stars ritual from the Necronomicon, and is tht enough to activate this Stelae?

| Strange Aeons | Prey for Death | ◆◇↻

Yall have yet to study the Necronomicon proper; only side notes and marginalia written by Lowls.

"Now might be the time to consult this dread volume and learn the ritual we need. Our ghostly friend here, er, may grow tired of our company in a few days"

He raises his eyebrow like it's not perfectly obvious to everyone he's saying she'll revert to her mindless-rage form in a few days.

"Perhaps we should have just one of use consult the book, lest we all fall victim to its contents? The rest of us can monitor the reader"

Forgive my ignorance here. I've read the massive infodump again and I'm a bit confused about the role of Xhamen-Dor and The King in Yellow. Lowls became infected by Xhamen-Dor and wanted to bring about his return, and Xhamen-Dor is trapped in Neruzivan. Why then did Lowls come to Neruzivan and leave to go to Carcosa? Is Xhamen-Dor the thing in the lake? If I'm not supposed to know the answer to these questions that's fine, but if I'm just failing at reading comprehension please take pity

Jevar weakly raises his hand, figuring his curiosities are best lent to this purpose.

I can read in it and try to stave off the madness. I can think of no other way to learn the operation of the Star Stelae. You're right, we should leave our new friend here in peace.

Are there specific rolls to find desired info and avoid side effects? Are we bringing back the sanity subsystem? :D

GM Screen:
1d20 ⇒ 4

I’m assuming y’all have some method of being able to read Necril for a long amount of time.

The former-amnesiacs hunker down while Jevar begins to study the Necronomicon. Even as he studies the tome, its knowledge is hidden behind esoteric language and mysticism.

Jevar Occultism: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (11) + 21 = 32
Hours: 1d4 ⇒ 3

After 3 hours of study, Jevar is unable to understand anything within the book—even with Lowl’s notes.

He then hands the book off to Kolgradd, who is a master in Occultism, for perusal.

Kolgradd Occultism: 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (6) + 25 = 31

Hours: 1d4 ⇒ 4

And with not much time left in the day, the group decides to go to sleep.

Kolgradd Reroll: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (4) + 23 = 27

As they rest, Boodiddly, Kolgradd, and Jevar each seem to have dreams: dreams of Neruzavin’s lake, an ultramarine blue. And something slowly stirs beneath the waves.

Kolgradd Occultism: 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (12) + 25 = 37

Hours: 1d4 ⇒ 4

And this time, as Kolgradd begins pouring over the tome, he realizes that he understands the book’s words—that this tome holds logic in its madness. And as he does, the Necronomicon seems to respond to him, trying to impart its knowledge to the dwarf faster than mortal minds are equipped to learn! If he is not careful, he could find himself down a rabbit hole of study in the tome, slowly eating away at his own mind!

Kolgradd Will: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (13) + 23 = 36

Kolgradd does not lose sight of his goal: the rituals that Lowls used. Unfortunately, this book contains knowledge that mortal men were never meant to comprehend, and even finding these rituals came at the deterioration of the dwarf’s mind.

Kolgradd, as a result of your slipping sanity from reading the Necronomicon, you permanently lose one edict or anathema of your choice. I understand that I didn’t really force people to make edicts/anathema for their characters, but this is meant to be a good representation of the PC losing access to who “they” are.

In exchange, the group now know these rituals:

Beckon the Stars:
Beckon the Stars Level 4
Unique
Cast 1 hour
Secondary Casters 3
Primary Check Arcana (expert) or Occultism (expert)
Secondary Checks Occultism or Arcana (whichever the primary caster isn’t rolling), Crafting, Society

Duration Varies; see text
Target Star Stela touched
————————————————
The primary caster uses the Star Stela to call to distant worlds and entities, attuning the stone to those energies and subjecting all creatures within 60 feet to those distant entities’ spying eyes for the ritual’s duration. Once active, a stela’s flattened face glows softly with several yellow, eldritch runes. This ritual has no other effect on its own, but it is an important preliminary step in preparing and performing Path to the Black Stars. You can also perform this ritual in reverse to unattune the target. The duration of attunement/unattunement is based on the result of the primary check

Critical Success Duration of permanent.
Success Duration of 2 weeks
Failure: The primary caster is affected by nightmare the next time they sleep (DC equal to the DC of a Secondary check).
[b]Critical Failure
As a failure, but affects all casters.

Path to the Black Stars:
Path to the Black Stars Level 7

Cast 3 days
Locus The Necronomicon (see text) and three attuned Star Stelae
Secondary Casters 3
Primary Check Arcana (master) or Occultism (master)
Secondary Checks Occultism or Arcana (whichever the primary caster isn’t rolling), Crafting, Society

Target The primary and secondary casters
————————————————
The ritual can use three attuned Star Stelae to transport the casters to Carcosa. Targets become the casters.

The casters draw and stand within a ritual circle, tracing eldritch symbols within the air to attune their current location to Carcosa’s cosmic coordinates. Upon this ritual’s completion, the carved runes on each of the locus stelae glow with eldritch power and shine beams of energy toward the primary caster. These beams cast a circle of sickly yellow light in a 100-foot radius around the caster and teleport all of the targets to a random destination on the distant world that holds Carcosa. Performing this ritual in the same place always transports the targets to the same region of Carcosa. If a creature used this ritual to travel to Carcosa, performing it again always transports the target back to its original point of departure.

It is possible for this ritual to be performed without the Necronomicon, but only by substituting a trio of special components associated with the King in Yellow’s portfolio: decadence, disorder, and nihilism. For decadence, add a cost of 300 gp worth of extravagant clothing, jewelry, and other material wealth for every level of the creatures to be transported. For disorder, targets must each perform an act anathema to them (if any). For nihilism, each target must accept a permanent drained 4 condition that can be removed only by a wish or an equally powerful effect.

Critical Success The targets are transported to Carcosa or back again, otherwise acting as a 10th-rank teleport.
Success as a critical success, except the primary caster also takes a –2 status penalty on Will saving throws against the spells and special abilities of creatures whose patron deity is Hastur. This effect lasts until the primary caster fails a Will saving throw against such an effect and for 24 hours thereafter.
Failure The ritual fails and all Star Stelae used in the ritual become unattuned.
Critical Failure as a failure, except all casters also become enfeebled 3 for 1 week and drained 3.

Kolgradd feels—no, knows—that this book contains far far more in its hundreds of pages; secrets and knowledge kept from the world and beyond. Magic to access the Dimension of Time, rituals to access the Dimension of Dreams each night during rest, knowledge about entities of the Dark Tapestry. All within this book.

Gonna pause here to give Kolgradd and others a chance to roleplay this.

Jevar becomes frustrated at his lack of understanding of the book. Worse, once it becomes clear that Kolgradd is up to the task, he becomes worried for the dwarf's mental condition. In between readings, he repeatedly asks him basic questions about who he is, and why he and the group are where they are to test his grip on reality. At first the results are positive...

When Kolgradd finally emerges with the two rituals, Jevar smiles and nods at him. Good job! We could be there in three days then.

From the looks of it Kolgradd should roll occultism and Jevar can roll for Arcana when it comes time to perform Path to the Black Stars.

I haven't written down any edicts and anathemas for Kolgradd, but there are some that would be obvious, for example he takes honour and vows very seriously and would never break his word, so let's lose that!

"Three days? Has it been that long? It seemed like only a few hours."

When he catches up, Kolagradd explains that they must first attune the Stelae before attempting the Path to the Black Stars, so it maybe be a bit longer before they can leave, depending on how accessible the others are. It's not long in the conversation before he zones out.

This book contains so much knowledge. It's evil of course, but isn't it also evil to throw away the higher calling of all sentient life- knowledge? We promised Yrisolma we would give it to them for destruction, but I didn't know then what I know now, and their morality seems so simplistic. Is the whole edifice of the outer planes nothing but a child's toy the gods have created to entertain the sleepi-

He reacts with a start when he realises the others are waiting for him to respond to something, though he can't remember the rest of the conversation.

"It's clear we must keep the book" he says emphatically, hoping his lapse goes unnoticed.

"For the ritual to travel and return. Yrisolma will just have to wait."

Boodiddly raises an eyebrow. "Kolgradd, the book won't help us get back once we know how to get there," he says slowly. "And it's a book that's not good for your health - look how pale you are, how you've gotten such dark rings under your eyes. It's clear we need to get rid of it." He leaves unspoken the idea that the sooner this happens, the better - his friend seems to be in a more-delicate mental state than expected if he's suggesting such things.

Shohreh grows ever more concerned for her comrades as the days pass in study of the horrid book, but she watches Kolgradd closest of all. With his behavior becoming more peculiar by the day, she places a gentle hand on the dwarf's shoulder.

"Kolgradd, please give me the book. I will keep it safe from anyone who would misuse it, but I worry for what it is doing to you."

With the ritual learned, the group goes about casting beckon the stars!

I had to do something shifting around, because the only one of those checks Shohreh can make is Occultism, and only Kolgradd and Jevar can attempt the Crafting check decently well.

The Star Stele’s runes become writhed in a yellow light, and as it does, Upianshe’s form falters briefly before returning.

downstairs to the camp

As the former-amnesiacs descend down the tower to meet back up with Kaklatath, they find that large swaths of the campsite has been overrun by various types of fungus. Even the tents seem to have veins of fungi climbing up its sides.

”They just began growing out of nowhere, and they’ve only just stopped.”

”Mortals!”

A familiar, booming voice echoes from the sky. The former-amnesiacs look to the sky to find a flying, flaming wagon wheel with eyes on each spoke: Yrisolma.

Yrisolma descends from the sky and floats in front of the group, his piercing gazes falling upon each of the former-amnesiacs expectantly.

”It has been 2 days since last we spoke. I have performed my reconnaissance of the area to no avail. I have noticed a strange surge of growth in flora in the area that began not too long ago. Tell me: have you uncovered any additional information on the blasphemous tome known as the Necronomicon?”

I will remind you that the Necronomicon is a locus “needed” to cast path to the black stars.

"We have," Boodiddly answers simply. "And to our great dismay, we have learned that its existence is required for a brief time longer to prevent a great tragedy upon this world." He continues to explain how Lowls used to book to begin the linking of worlds, how the only way to prevent this is to deactivate the stele on Carcosa, and how the unholy tome is required to get them to that distant planet. "I would invite you to accompany us until such time as we have departed, leaving the Necronomicon in your care."

Yrisolma’s eyes immediately fall upon Boodiddly as the archon gets uncomfortably close.

”It drive men to madness and chaos!”

Ding

”The tome was never meant for mortal eyes! Its knowledge must be destroyed before it is allowed to wreak havoc!”

Ding

I understand that you rolled a 43 there, Boodiddly, but this is a particularly difficult situation, to the point where I unfortunately need to invoke the line “Some requests are unsavory or impossible, and even a helpful NPC would never agree to them.”. Using Diplomacy in this circumstance essentially requires a critical success (which you didn’t get even with Shohreh’s Aid). The result of that Diplomacy roll is “he doesn’t immediately attack you for suggesting using the Necronomicon.”

When Shohreh had asked for the book, Kolgradd had rolled his eyes and blustered at suggestion it was doing something to him. He didn't want to let ignorance lead the way when such vibrant truths are so close.

He trusted her though, and he knew first-hand how much such things can warp minds. He gave her the Necronomicon, and let his mind return to the wonderful things he has already learned from it.

When Yrisolma returned, he was dismayed but ready.

"This world and all the souls who live on it are threatened by Carcosa, and we need the book to have a hope of stopping it. You may join us if you wish, but if you stop us you will doom the world"

He does not address the return of the Necronomicon, for he is conflicted on its destruction and he's not sure whether the bell will ring if he promises its return.

We have taken measures that will erase not just the book itself from this world, but also our memories of what is contained within. We fully understand the threat posed by this book and our common foe, so we do not take this course out of convenience or ignorance of the cost."

She sighs and closes her eyes before continuing.

"As I said, I serve Black Butterfly. None hate the Dark Tapestry more than Her, and none know the depths of its evil more than Her. And She has chosen me to serve as the agent of Her will against this threat. I would not ask you to trust me blindly, but I do ask you to trust Her."

Like any decent lie, there's a fair bit of truth in there. Deception +22, fingers crossed!

So, for being in the area of a ring of truth, you automatically take a -2 status penalty to Deception checks. You also need to make a save against Yrisolma’s All-Knowing Eyes to avoid reducing your degree of success on Deception checks by one step (y’all have technically been making this save every round you’re in his presence, but this is the first time it’s become relevant), and I’m assuming you’re Averting Gaze. I’m also not making this a secret check, because the penalties for failure will be VERY obvious.

Shohreh Will; Averting Gaze: 1d20 + 26 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 26 + 2 = 32 Failure

Reroll: 1d20 + 26 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 26 + 2 = 40 Success --> Critical Success (Resolute Faith)

Shohreh Deception; ring of truth: 1d20 + 22 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 22 - 2 = 36 Failure --> Success (the ring of truth chimes)

Yrisolma stops and closes his eyes, then opening another, identical set of eyes on the opposite side of his body as he stares at Shohreh.

GM Screen:
4d20 ⇒ (8, 20, 8, 3) = 39

The giylea’s gazes stare into Shohreh’s soul, and for the briefest of moment, the changeling detects something she’s not seen from the archon before: uncertainty.

”Very well. I will choose to believe you.”

Ding

“You are free to do as you must to save your world.”

Ding

“But I will not accompany you.”

Ding

“Even the thought of being near that book for such a purpose disturbs me.”

Ding

“Is this what the angel Tabris felt as he chronicled the Book of the Damned? Perhaps I misjudged the Chronicler.”

Ding

”However, know this: I know the extent and weaknesses of my magic”

Ding

“And if I have discovered that you speak falsely to me, and continue to proliferate the malign influence of the Necronomicon: I will not hesitate to strike you down myself to rid the Great Beyond of this blasphemous book once and for all!”

Ding

Yrisolma pauses, seeming to be in deep thought as he closes his eyes. Suddenly, he opens his eyes on both sides of his body to stare at each of the former-amnesiacs simultaneously!

”And I will do so with the knowledge that you were truthful about the end of this world!”

Ding

With that final, almost mournful chime, Yrisolma flies off into the skies, disappearing behind the many “buildings” of Neruzavin.

So, where to now? Lowls’s notes state that the other two Star Stelae are 1) at the shores of the lake, and 2) protected by a hag coven in the northeast.

Apologies; today is really rough, so I may be out of it.

The former-amnesiacs make their way toward the banks of the lake. As they travel, they find that the entirety of Neruzavin has been overrun with patches of fungal growths—more so than previously. Nearby, though, the group hears the sound of grinding stone and something BIG moving on the next “street” over. As they look at the next “street” over, though, they find nothing making the grinding, but instead that something massive had gone through the area, seeming to flatten the fungal masses.

As they proceed toward the northwest, they find that the fallen “buildings” at the bank of the lake have created a massive pile, creating a complex cave system out of the rubble. The group easily finds an opening in the western side of the massive mound and spelunk through there.

Into the fallen “buildings

The tunnels wind and twist for dozens upon dozens of feet before the group see anything of note—or, more accurately, anyone.

As the group climbs up a set of rubble, they are met at the top by…a seemingly helpful hand being offered to assist the final leg of the climb. The hand belongs to a man standing at the top of the climb: a bronze-skinned human wearing crimson and gold robes from a long-gone era. The man appears malnourished, but nevertheless carries a look of pride upon his face. His most striking feature is his bright purple eyes—a telltale sign of an Azlanti. The air around him seem to shift with calming colors, and is filled with whispers of murmuring voices that seem strangely familiar.

Whether or not the former-amnesiacs accept the man’s help, he stands straight as they reach the top of the climb. He bows deeply toward Shohreh and Jevar. ”Children of Azlant, I am Aeptolinu Character Profiles Updated. You arrive at the Snarl, the edge of oblivion upon this failed existence.”

What do you do?

Kolgradd takes the offered hand as he leads the climb, and then when the stranger appears azlanti looks confused at his arm.

"Another spirit?" He whispers to Shohreh.

To cover the whisper, he greets the Azlanti with a bow of his own.

"Aeptolinu, I am Kolgradd Thunderiron, and these are my companions, Jevar Shadowmantle, Shohreh Kassar, and Boodiddly".

With the introductions taken care of, he jumps right in.

The former-amnesiacs follow Aeptolinu further into the Snarl, where they eventually come upon a strange hallway. Chipped basalt towers form a hallway of jarring angles. Each of the dark, smoothed surfaces bears hundreds of chalky messages as if every wall, floor, and ceiling served as a blackboard.

”Failurehall. Upon these walls are the recordings of the lost glory of Azlant that I have penned. Though at times I have heard and recorded the failures of ongoing events throughout the world upon these walls.”

GM Screen:
4d20 ⇒ (17, 5, 16, 10) = 48

As the group continues traveling through Failurehall, Boodiddly and Kolgradd notice that the words upon the walls begin twisting and moving, beginning to spell out…all-too-personal sentences.

”You, like all others upon this world, have failed. And those failures are transcribed here, and reading of those failures will bring you closer to understanding the futility of all.”

Aeptolinu’s words are enough of a warning from the former-amnesiacs to cover their eyes as they traverse Failurehall, not daring to read any of the words written therein.

”We have left Failurehall; you may cease to cover your eyes.”

As they hesitantly listen to the stranger, they find themselves at a T-intersection—one path going right, one straight, and one back toward Failurehall. Aeptolinu motions toward the path to the right.

”That leads to the Saffron Throne, domain of a fiend who refers to himself as the Saffron Prince. Many of the Snarl’s inhabitants cope with the cruelties of the multiverse in many ways, but none embrace those cold realities so wholeheartedly as the Saffron Prince. He is utterly selfish and without empathy. When he first heard of Hastur, he arrogantly decided he could amass the personal wealth and power necessary to surpass the King in Yellow by feigning obedience and overthrowing his ‘master’ later. He has since been cursed by a golden crown he recovered from the cult of Hastur, which has further cursed him with delusions of grandeur, making him an unsuspecting puppet should the King in Yellow ever demand survice of this puny protégé. He now lounges upon his Saffron Throne, surveying his imaginary kingdom and devising intricate ways to torment his nonexistent minions.”

Aeptolinu turns to the group. ”You wished for the star-marked pillar. It is not toward the Saffron Throne. You may visit the pitiful prince if you wish, but you will not find your futile goal therein.” Aeptolinu then continues travelling straight, past the path toward the Saffron Throne.

Eventually, the path opens up. More than a dozen immense stone towers crisscross messily above, forming a manner of roof for this large cavern. Broken basalt scree creates a beach that slopes gently into the water to the north. A nearly cylindrical pillar stands near the shore—a Star Stele. Map Updated

”It is here that we speak to the Speaker for the Deep—an entity that claims to be a mouthpiece for the being within the lake. We of the Snarl only rarely come here to commune with the entity, so the so-called ‘Speaker’ does very little.”

As the group comes closer to the Star Stele, they catch a glimpse of the still water of the unnamed lake. It’s mirrorlike sheen reflects something…not normal. Instead of the sky above the lake, and possibly a reflection of sections of the Snarl, the lake instead reflects a haunting skyline of metal, wood, and stone structures in all directions—a vast city devoid of life.

Shohreh moves forward and sends shadowstuff to slash through the fungal piles!

Basic Reflex:
Red: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (19) + 18 = 37
Yellow; frightened 1: 1d20 + 18 - 1 ⇒ (8) + 18 - 1 = 25

Both have weakness to slashing damage.

Jevar then moves forward and sends lightning through the enemies!

Basic Reflex:
Red: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (1) + 18 = 19
Blue: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (13) + 20 = 33

Kolgradd easily slams his maul into Yellow multiple times before moving back. Three “crits”

Bunch of Fort Saves from Yellow; frightened 1:
vs. frost 1 | DC 24: 1d20 + 21 - 1 ⇒ (8) + 21 - 1 = 28
vs. crit spec 1 | DC 31: 1d20 + 21 - 1 ⇒ (3) + 21 - 1 = 23

vs. frost 2 | DC 24: 1d20 + 21 - 1 ⇒ (11) + 21 - 1 = 31
vs. crit spec 2 | DC 31: 1d20 + 21 - 1 ⇒ (14) + 21 - 1 = 34

vs. frost 3 | DC 24: 1d20 + 21 - 1 ⇒ (17) + 21 - 1 = 37
vs. crit spec 3 | DC 31: 1d20 + 21 - 1 ⇒ (9) + 21 - 1 = 29

So the second two attacks were Advantageous Assaults. Still took no cold damage.

Boodiddly:
This worm is inexorable, and cannot be slowed down by any means, and any attempt to do so is ultimately futile! Its sting carries a venom that causes creatures’ fine motor skills to slowly cease working Causes clumsy

Boodiddly begins singing then begs for applause from the creatures!

Will Saves:
Red: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (13) + 15 = 28
Blue: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (5) + 23 = 28
Yellow; frightened 1: 1d20 + 15 - 1 ⇒ (2) + 15 - 1 = 16

Don’t ask me HOW this works, but it’s what the thing says it can do: As the creature begins to be affected by Boodiddly’s magic, it Sloughs its Skin, causing its outermost layer to peel away and into the water! It is this layer of skin that disturbingly writhes as it attempts to “clap” for Boodiddly. It negates the effects roaring applause would have on it, but it can only use that once per day.

Red makes a grand applause at Boodiddly…

Yellow Stands and Strides toward the group.

Red Persistent Fire: 1d10 ⇒ 3
DC 15 flat: 1d20 ⇒ 16

Yellow Persistent Fire: 1d10 ⇒ 9
DC 15 flat: 1d20 ⇒ 5

Blue Strides onto land, and as it gets close to the group, it ◆◆ Thrashes around wildly! It Strikes each creature within its reach, MAP not increasing until afterward. It can Strike once with its jaws, once with its stinger, and any number of times with its body. It also does not distinguish friend from foe, so Red will also be hit.

Thrash:
Jaws vs Shohreh w/rallying anthem: 1d20 + 31 ⇒ (20) + 31 = 51 Thankfully, because it’s not a “Strike,” it doesn’t get to use Improved Grab afterwards.
Piercing Damage (doubled from crit): 3d12 + 16 ⇒ (4, 9, 11) + 16 = 40

Boodiddly raises an eyebrow at the twitching skin and decides to see just how freshly-peeled they can make this thing before it withers away entirely.

Cast another rank 6 roaring applause, targeting all three enemies (Will DC 33) [AA]. If Red and Yellow at least fail their saves against the second casting, he'll use his last action to Stride directly south - otherwise he'll Sustain the previous casting [A].

Not having been successfully grabbed, Shohreh jogs away to a safe distance to lessen her wounds.

Jevar wonders how the worm likes the cold. Freezing winds extend from his hands, pushing away from him with great force. Except, instead of immediately washing over those in their path, the winds gather at a point over the lake, behind their foes. It grows and grows until it envelopes the three.
